2481  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Oct 2023] Fees are low, use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs on: November 10, 2023, 01:58:32 PM
the sender sent $6205 worth Bitcoins and paid $1906 worth Bitcoins in fees. 1/3 of transaction was paid in fees
The sender didn't even sent $6k in Bitcoin, he created 100 dust inputs and the rest was change. It's just Ordinal spam, and considering someone paid $1900 for it, that can only mean they expect someone else to pay much more.

this is ridiculous.
Agreed.
2482  Economy / Reputation / Re: Should Ratimov be in DT1? on: November 10, 2023, 01:45:45 PM
This topic will not be one about Ratimov's plagiarism, although this subject will be touched
This is too ironic to not touch this subject: here, Ratimov is complaining about incorrect quotes of his "original data":
If I deleted this topic, this does not mean that anyone can now freely copy it and pass it off as their own work. You didn’t even ask me about running my own topic with my original data instead of me, you thought that you could freely dispose of this format and pass it off as your own, hiding behind some fucking link.

If I had done this and opened a similar topic, then the assholes would have been squealing on the forum, saying what a copy-pastor and thief Ratimov is, but when others do this, then there is nothing wrong with it, if he wanted to, he did it.

You present this information as if you are the author of this design and you collected this information and presented it in this way. Although in fact you didn’t do anything here, you just copied it without asking.

Here you are all playing inspectors and teaching people how to correctly format someone else’s text, although you yourself still need to be taught. If you took someone else’s finished material without permission, then it must be formatted like this:

Quote from: Ratimov's deleted thread
~

Or another option, if you wrote in the topic that all the previously collected material belongs to Ratimov, as well as the design style and presentation form, and you just decided to revive the deleted topic and continued to lead it, then I would pass by and not say anything as a reproach to you.

To verify Ratimov's plagiarism claim, I checked the unedited post, and unlike someone who would post a small link at the end of his long copied topic, NotATether started his topic by giving credit.
2483  Other / Meta / Re: Issues Bitcoin Talk members meet using the website without Java Script on: November 10, 2023, 01:00:24 PM
Seems like the easiest fix is to just remove people from your ignore list if you want to see their posts.  Wink
Or: right mouse > Open link in private window. Unless you use a private window by default, in that case it will still show your ignored users.
2484  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Question about Bitcoin network spammer on: November 10, 2023, 12:17:37 PM
And at time of writing this post, statoshi.info report there's about 128.3 million UTXO. Although i have no idea how much UTXO growth impact RAM and I/O usage.
Isn't the size of chainstate caused by all those UTXOs? It's currently 7.8 GB. Ideally, that should all fit in RAM, but my Bitcoin Core uses much less. Except for the IBD, looking up about 2000 transactions on disk every 10 minutes isn't much of a problem.

Quote
NFT already possible on LN and various Bitcoin sidechain, it's just almost nobody use it.
Ordinal spammers (or should I say scammers?) need to use Bitcoin's name to get people's money. "LN" isn't familiar enough, I guess. It would be so much better if they promote LN while spamming LN. Unlike Bitcoin, LN has no problem with millions of dust transactions.
2485  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk was down on: November 10, 2023, 12:09:04 PM
Somehow there seems to be a pattern in the downtimes as they have mostly taken place at the same time recently.
There are now 2 topics about forum downtime. See this post of mine for patterns.

I try to get bitcoin address by hand.

I set the private key like
Don't do this! There are 2 likely scenarios:
1. You lose access to your funds.
2. Someone else takes your funds.

Will I not able to sign the trans?
Try to sign a message from that address.
2487  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Question about Bitcoin network spammer on: November 10, 2023, 09:40:46 AM
You think NFTs will gain popularity again?
I hope not! That would mean more people lose their money. I've clarified my post, "blows up" could indeed be interpreted as a pump, while I meant it as a complete failure.

Its sad that you accept BTC as a new form of wealth but that you can't accept the value of a new art form
There's a reason the NFT market crashed so hard. It's not art, and it's not rare. It's a scam created to convince gullible people to hand over their money hoping to get rich quick.

Ordinals are just a scam to convince people to pay much more money for Bitcoin dust.

Quote
you likely think the art below is worthless.
It's not art, it's a can of expired chicken soup. Whoever pays $68,750 for it only does so hoping someone else is going to pay more. To most people who aren't part of that, it is indeed worthless.

Quote
Learn from me as I could have purchased  the item below for under $500 when I was young
I can sell you a can of expired Unox chicken soup for $500 right now Tongue That doesn't make it art.
2488  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk: Error 504: Gateway time-out AGAIN on: November 10, 2023, 09:00:17 AM
It's happening at 6:00 AM UTC every time. So maybe Theymos can get up at midnight once and check all webhosting scripts and/or cronjobs which are talking to the DB to find the culprit.
Theymos wrote this:
It seems to always happen at around the same time, so I suppose it's probably some automated maintenance process messing something up, but I don't have anything running at this time, so I wonder if it's something in the web-host's networking infrastructure, or something like that. It's difficult to diagnose, since it happens rarely, and usually when I'm sleeping.
I'll use my deleted posts archive to see gaps between posts, starting at post 63 million (October 17). I'll only show gaps larger than 3 minutes between posts (which could mean the server was inaccessible, but it could also mean there simply were no new posts for 3 minutes).

it's easier to hide smartphone or put it in a safe pocket quickly if you notice any threat.
Phones are also easier to get stolen from the same pocket. Nobody can steal my laptop from the laptop backpack on my back without me noticing.

Quote
aren't laptops more likely to get victim of cyber attacks?
I'm assuming you don't run your Bitcoin Core on Windows, and don't install malware on your laptop.
2490  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Raspi 4 for Bitcoin Node: Still Compatible? on: November 09, 2023, 02:35:47 PM
The 8 inch by 8 inch by 1.5 inch tinys use under 30 watts daily if they have an intel i5 6500t cpu.

that is 1 kwatt a month. who cares about power costs at that level
30W is 21 kWh/month, or 263 kWh/year. That's €100 per year (at €0.38/kWh). Assuming I create a setup for 5 years, that's €500. If a Raspi could bring it down to 6W including disk, that saves €400.

Also, with laptops if you do have to change the fan out it is *usually* more of a project then a desktop.
I'm on my third fan Tongue The first one broke, the second fan had less blades than the original and didn't work as well. Most of the time it's just 8-12 screws.

Quote
On the flip side if the AC adapter dies on a laptop it's not a big deal vs. taking apart a PC to and getting a new power supply.
Don't get me started on adapters....... I've seen original adapters blow up the mainboard (twice). Most of the time the cable breaks internally, but that doesn't happen if you use it as a server.

Laptop (assuming used): ~ Bad: For the most part NOT designed for 24/7/365 operations
It may not be designed for it, but after years af running laptops for 24/7/365, I can tell you it works just fine in most cases Smiley Just keep the fan clean, and stay away from the ones with power hungry CPUs.
2492  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Question about Bitcoin network spammer on: November 09, 2023, 02:18:22 PM
2. Ordinals users have paid over 1385BTC in transaction fees for inscribing this stuff. That means miners have earned literally 1385BTC from this time period or over 50 million dollars altogether.
I can only assume gullible people paid a lot more in their attempt to get rich quick. And some indeed got rich, while the majority lost their money. The NFT market is very quiet nowadays, and this seems to be the next thing. Until Ordinals blow up fail too, after which someone will create another money maker for themselves.
2493  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Raspi 4 for Bitcoin Node: Still Compatible? on: November 09, 2023, 02:08:19 PM
and you spend under 100 usd.
Including a free i7 laptop isn't really a fair comparison Wink Availability of cheap older hardware will depend on where you live. I can't just order hardware in New York without high shipping cost and import taxes.

Quote
so add 100 bucks and you destroy any rasp pi
For continuous operation, I'd look at energy costs too. A Raspi is designed to use very little power. Since you're into mining, I assume you have very cheap electricity. Here, the Optiplex will cost more to run a few years than it's initial price.

That being said: I like cheap laptops too. They're much more versatile.

btw. Speaking of this, based on personal experience, what is the recommended minimum hardware CPU/RAM? Does it make sense to start a node on a laptop with 1 core?
I just checked: bitcoind currently uses 6-9% of one Xeon core, and 3% of the system's 32GB RAM. Except for the IBD, it really doesn't take much resources.
It's been a long time since laptops with only 1 core were sold, so it depends on which CPU you have. And if it's 15 years old, chances are it lacks RAM too.
2494  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: As a Bitcoin Core only user, how im supposed to pay someone in person? on: November 09, 2023, 11:19:07 AM
Very easy to do with GPG, you don't need any system software to do this except for a PGP client.

First, zip the folder into a .tar.gz or a .zip or something, Then encrypt and delete the folder.
Am I the only one who doesn't find any of this easy to do on a phone?

My approach is much simpler: my phone itself is worth more than any crypto in my mobile wallet. I'm careful with it anyway.
2495  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Linux: is wine a potential threat for our BTCs? on: November 09, 2023, 10:04:25 AM
Do you think wine represents a potential risk for his funds?
Safe assumption: of course! Any software adds a risk. Depending on the risk level, I'd run it in a VM, on a different system, or as a different user. After all, you're using a multi-user system, and there's no need to risk it. Use permissions to keep things apart.

Example:
To run wine as a different user, create a new user "wine". Give user "wine" access to your display:
Code:
xhost +SI:localuser:wine; su - wine
Then, as user "wine":
Code:
export DISPLAY=:0.0

Note that I haven't used this for wine, but I did for other programs. If I have to use wine, I run it inside a VM with VPN, because I don't trust the programs I use with it. Or on a spare laptop which is setup to wipe and overwrite in minutes.

I would perhaps submit a few posts since I'm almost always out of sMerits - well, I'm not a merit source either. Tongue
But first I wanted to ask for "green light" from you - I don't want to seem rude, since the idea was originally intended for "newer" accounts with less merit.
Go!

Are you only interested in posts (or are only posts eligble) that are unmerited or can you also submit posts that have received merit but are/were still very helpful?
Go!

Even better if you add good posts from others too Tongue I'm going to use vapourminer's Merit history to clone-dump sMerit. He seems to read a lot of posts, including old posts.
2497  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: As a Bitcoin Core only user, how im supposed to pay someone in person? on: November 09, 2023, 09:31:56 AM
There have been various methods to bypass the lock screen, such as this one: https://www.androidpolice.com/one-minute-hack-allowed-lock-screen-bypass-on-android-current-pixels-are-safe/.
That's like: "you've replaced my bicycle lock, now you can take my car".
Android always feels like a dumbed-down version of Linux. On a slow old tablet, after switching users, the lock screen takes many seconds to load. During that time you can view the entire screen, and even starts apps (including Authenticator).

So setting the phone to perform auto reboot every few hours would help a lot in this case.
That removes basic functionality from your phone: you'll need to unlock it every few hours to be able to receive phone calls again.

The reason I haven't Merited your posts is because I have doubts if you wrote it yourself. It doesn't match your other posts, in which you make many mistakes from writing words wrong to incorrect capitalisation.

I've been slacking (and ill), and my source sMerits keep building up. I'm planning to do this:
If you have 150 source merit and you only see 3 merit-worthy posts in a month, then I'd rather you over-give each of them 50 merit than let the merit expire. That way there are more people capable of sending merit, and the "merit economy" is less top-down.
I don't think I'll drop 50 sMerits on a random Newbie, higher ranks are welcome too.
