The hot/cold issue is for the 1000 DRKs of the masternode, not the coins of the transactions. These are conducted in a trustless manner (signatures instead of coin forwarding).

The limit on transactions is due to the denomination pool of 10 DRKs (similar sized inputs).

Vertcoin did it and it works ok... I think the testcoin is also traded on poloniex. It is a testbed for stealth addresses.
