25442  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Will ETH overtake BTC in market cap? on: May 01, 2017, 09:25:02 PM
There are literally HUNDREDS of apps now being written for it.
That doesn't justify tens of millions of dollars in market capitalization per app, especially if none of these apps has any real use.
25443  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How can we expect "average Joe" to remember passphrases to his Bitcoin? on: May 01, 2017, 10:24:35 AM
How is this a 'problem' exclusive to bitcoin? If they forget their passwords or pins then they'll likely forget them from every other thing including cards and websites.
The difference is of course that passwords or pins from websites and cards can be recovered. Almost every website has a standard "forgot password"-link to click on, and a new creditcard just takes a few days to arrive.

That doesn't make the problem exclusive to Bitcoin. Maybe digital photos or files in general are a better comparison: many people lose them because of failing drives, cryptolockers or other viruses. That didn't stop the "average Joe" to use a computer. "Average Joe" just doesn't think about it, until it's too late.
25444  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is happening currently with cryptocurrencies on: April 30, 2017, 06:54:23 PM
It will be interesting to see when the alt bubble pops and if that money flows into BTC or not.
That is my expectation indeed, if Bitcoin ever solves the scaling problem. If that happens, I expect Bitcoin to quickly double (or more), draining the market share of altcoins.
In the end, who wants to have NEM, Golem, Augur or PIVX? Of course they're only used to get rich quickly, created by someone who felt he joined Bitcoin too late and started his own. And getting rich means getting more Bitcoins, that's the goal of all alt-trading.

25451  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: 10 LTCs reward for your help on: April 27, 2017, 04:54:22 PM
Edit: I just found in my backup folder a file named litecoin-wallet-keys-2017-04-09-011837.dat
Could this be of any help?
Try it?
I'm not sure what the Windows-option is, here I would use this:
./litecoin-qt -wallet=litecoin-wallet-keys-2017-04-09-011837.dat
To start it from command-line with the right wallet.
25452  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: 10 LTCs reward for your help on: April 27, 2017, 03:02:36 PM
In Bitcoin Core, setting up a password replaces all unused change addresses. In other words: after you make a transaction, your old backup becomes worthless. I assume that is the same for Litecoin. I have Litecoin Core running, but never had these problems by myself.

When I search for "error reading wallet.dat! All keys read correctly, but transaction data or address book entries might be missing or incorrect" (AKA your error), Google brings me to this page, with a similar problem in Bitcoin Core.
His surprising solution:
Quote
I had to fire up the OS on the old HD and run an older version of Bitcoin code - lo and behold, no problems with the wallet at all. Transferred balance to another address, installed new Bitcoin core and generated a new wallet.dat.

Did you - by any chance - switch to a different client version in between?

Nobtcoin: any update on staking?
Staking is not working. The last stake reward for me was yesterday.

I've seen the pool hashing power on http://pool.sye.host/getting_started change a lot, earlier today it dropped about 99% compared to a few days ago, making even CPU-mining possible again. Now it's up 10-fold again.
What causes this? Just someone with a hardware miner that miners some Nobtcoin for a while and moves to another coin again?
25454  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: April 27, 2017, 11:40:54 AM
Now what about a dev fund? I don't think that the 1% is apart of a dev fund and I don't think it should be, if Tony builds this up he deserves that 1% as his reward for building this system.
Tony distributes 98%, keeps 1%, and that leaves 1% remaining. I assume that is for future developments.
  • 98% of all bytes and blackbytes (the private untraceable currency) will be distributed among bitcoin holders who link their bitcoin and byteball addresses before any of the distribution rounds.  No investment required, you keep your bitcoins, plus receive the bytes and blackbytes.  See below how to receive the coins.
  • 1% I reserve for myself

What strikes me as a bit weird is that some rich Bitcoin-holders get more than Tony himself, just for linking an address. For example: http://transition.byteball.org/ shows an address with 9992.30838103 Bitcoin balance, it gets 7.3304 % of all bytes. More than 7 times more than the developer gets for doing all the work.
This doesn't really fit Tony's idea:
Quote
I want Byteball to be in the hands of as many people as possible
Unfortunately, I can't think of any way to prevent this. Limiting the maximum balance doesn't help, the Bitcoins could just as easily be spread out over multiple addresses.

Quote
I vote that an extra 1% or even 2% of the currency is withheld for the sole purposes of development outside of Tony's contributions.

This would be for other developers/bounties/etc. that Tony leads.
Basically that turns Tony into an employer/CEO. Would that be something he wants?

Quote
The fund would allow Tony to eventually start getting more people on board.
You do have a point here. If I search on Google: "who pays Bitcoin developers", the first hit I get says "Funding Bitcoin development seems to have always been problematic".
If Byteball can prevent this by reducing the community's share from 98 to 97%, I'd say go for it!
25455  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: April 26, 2017, 07:22:52 PM
This leaves me with the same question I've had since I first read about smart contracts: how is the smart contract going to know what happened in real life?
From your link:
Quote
We have an oracle that monitors flight delays.
How does this oracle know? I can believe the smart contract structure can work, so you don't need to trust any third party insurance company on this, but you now move the uncertain factor elsewhere.

Quote
I have the same question here: what if these sites are wrong? If you rely entirely on a third party website, you're copying all possible flaws they have. How is this better than using an actual insurance company?

Don't get me wrong, I like your projects, just curious if the flaws I can think of can be prevented.

From this calculation, could the statement below be made
Risking $10 for $100 with a chance of 21%?
No.
It doesn't matter how you play, or what you calculate. Without a house edge, your chance of increasing 10-fold is only 10%. With a house edge, the chance gets slightly smaller (depending on how you play).

You can't use previous or simulated results to predict the next result.
25458  Economy / Services / Re: I'm giving away 0.00289* BTC per Bitcoin you own by signing a message on: April 25, 2017, 01:22:56 PM
GBYTE just crossed $200. That means about 0.005 BTC per BTC signed now.

Is there any deadline here for sharing bitcoins?
Deadline is May 10, 2017 at 21:42 UTC (at full moon).
And I need some time to read your post before that.
25459  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: BYTEBALL: Totally new consensus algorithm + private untraceable payments on: April 25, 2017, 12:02:41 PM
Also, I'm wondering what would happen if I link different BTC address from single BTC wallet (like Ledger nano) to different Byteball addresses?
Will the previously linked BTC address automatically become invalid??
Yes!

Quote
I want to relink my BTC address to different byteball address  Undecided
You can still do this, but move your Bitcoins to a different Bitcoin address, and link that new address to your new Byteball address.
