25621  Economy / Economics / Re: A 'Base' Price of Bitcoin at US$18,000 on: March 09, 2017, 05:31:25 PM
- Assume there are 30 ounces of gold for every bitcoin in existence.
Let me poke at this assumption: Bitcoin is clearly capped at 21 million, while up to the year 2011 171,300 tonnes of gold (6 billion ounces) had been mined. That would mean 10 times more gold per Bitcoin than your assumption.
25622  Other / Meta / Re: My Legendary account was hacked on: March 09, 2017, 02:47:55 PM
From that addy I found account mellon, which has posted 2 other addresses:
1Je4efdRaZxqNtL2ZXu3xG7VjkMRRZbLZK (archived) and 1QJfHUwoSgPgLmCot4pSNhqxEqBVfgndxD (archived). Can you sign a message from either one of these addresses?
25623  Other / Meta / Re: Self-moderated topics on: March 09, 2017, 02:09:14 PM
When searching to make a new thread about self-moderation, I stumbled on this 4 year old thread. Allow me to mega-kick it with a feature request:

Feature request
Would it be possible to block users on my Ignore list from posting in my self-moderated threads?

Reason
I've now converted 3 of my threads to self-moderated, to end spam. My biggest (giveaway) thread collected an estimated 2000 non-qualifying spam-posts in 8.5 months. I add all of them to my personal blacklist, and click "Ignore" on Bitcointalk so they're easy to spot in the future. Every day I delete several posts from Ignored users.
If they simply can't post in my thread, Ignoring them once is enough to get rid of them forever, instead of deleting their posts every day over and over again.

Credits
It's not my own idea, someone else mentioned it somewhere. Unfortunately, I can't find it back to give credits.
25624  Economy / Web Wallets / How to "tag" an address on blockchain.info? on: March 09, 2017, 10:40:26 AM
It used to be possible to tag an address on Blockchain.info:

Bonus
Tag this address on blockchain.info, so it shows up on blockchain.info with only the prefix instead of the full address. I have done this for 1foreverDArUNEX2gVD26vautcx3b8zTZ.

However, since Blockchain.info got updated, it gives a blank page, and I can't find the new location.
How can I do this now?
25625  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Imported private key into bitcoin-qt, after scanning it just retunred null on: March 09, 2017, 10:19:26 AM
Nothing was on it.
If you "found" it, it could be someone else has the private key, waiting for some innocent finder to fund it!
After importing in Bitcoin Core, you can't delete it from your wallet (unless you imported it into a new wallet or restore a backup). If you keep it in your daily wallet, make sure to label it ("DO NOT USE EVER AGAIN").

Something changed since Blockchain.info got updated. I'm still looking for the new location.

Update: the link works again Smiley

25629  Economy / Exchanges / Re: BitStamp KYC out of control on: March 08, 2017, 01:11:05 PM
This is Bitcoin for christs sake, freedom, privacy, and all that.
Your privacy and freedom ends the moment you try to connect Bitcoin to fiat. If you stick to Bitcoin, and nobody can request anything.
I wouldn't be surprised if this is caused by regulation, meant to discourage people from using Bitcoin. But this is of course pure speculation from my part.
25630  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How safe is your UTXO? on: March 08, 2017, 06:56:31 AM
Because (1) is not effective.  It would need perfect collusion of ALL miners.  If your transaction is waiting in the mem pool, sooner or later, a miner that didn't blacklist your transaction will include it in a successful block.  And as long as it isn't included in a block, it stays on the mem pool.  So the only thing that blacklisting by a FRACTION of the miners implies, is a very long delay for your transaction.
However, (2) is an effective soft fork.  If a majority of miners applies it, your transaction will never be included, because those miners that include it, will get orphaned blocks because of it.  So it is sufficient that 51% of the miners applies this effective soft fork, and you're censored.  When the minority of miners not censoring you learn about this, they have no choice: they have to censor you now too, or they will regularly lose blocks that get orphaned.  The majority always imposes a soft fork on the minority.
(1) Won't happen as long as Bitcoin isn't completely centralized. Some miners already give priority to certain transactions, it would be possible to do the opposite too.
(2) Say this would happen exactly like this: 51% orphans blocks with transactions from X. And X makes sure he tries to be in every block, while the 49% mine that block. That would mean 49% build on those blocks many times a day, and orphans up to 6 blocks deep are a daily occurring problem. 6 Confirmations wouldn't mean anything anymore!

25636  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: about high priority transaction on: March 06, 2017, 09:36:08 AM
There used to be some room for high priorities transactions, which even don't pay fees and will be confimed in the blocks with other paying transactions. In the mean time miners seems to only include the higher fee one in the blocks and ingore the high priority ones. What do you think about it? After the block is increased, will this function be activated again?
This function is still active! But why would a miner pick someone who's sending a million dollars without a fee, if he can pick someone who's sending 5 bucks with 1 dollar fee? Of course the miner picks the transaction that earns him a dollar over the one that earns him nothing.
For the future when blocks might get bigger: Bitcoin Core 0.14 will deactivate this priority mechanism. (I only read this recently, I can't find back the source, so don't hang me on it)
25637  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Egad. 81,000 + Transactions Unconfirmed. Again. Ugh! on: March 05, 2017, 09:32:52 PM
If that person is willing to pay for it, the network should just be able to handle it. Email spam makes up 97% of the 200 billion emails sent each day. The email system was adjusted in such a way that it can handle it, instead of making people wait longer to send an email.
That statement is complete nonsense. In no way will Bitcoin be able to sustain the amount of spam that it can be thrown at it.
If a spammer is willing to pay $1000+ per hour on fees, that should be enough to create a network that can withstand it. I don't see any other way to stop the spam.

No-one will be able to trust the validity of on-chain transactions, as BU can fork or reorg itself unexpectedly at any time. The ability to alter the consensus rules on the fly turns forks and re-orgs into a feature, when they're highly undesirable for a stable uniform blockchain.
This makes sense. It's the first time I read about this as a reason not to go for BU.

Hi, I find viabtc transaction accelerator in the forum, I entered my txid in the first minute. Should be the top 100 input in the hour, but after 45 minutes, my transaction is still not accelerated. Do you use it and is it really working?
ViaBTC still needs to find a block for your transaction to be included. That can take several hours.
I've used it and it works.
25640  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Egad. 81,000 + Transactions Unconfirmed. Again. Ugh! on: March 05, 2017, 01:27:52 PM
The Bitcoin network is being attacked by spam again.
https://blockchain.info/address/3QQB6AWxaga6wTs6Xwq8FYppgrGinGu15f
31981 transactions.  Roll Eyes
Couldn't this be a failing piece of software stuck in a loop?

2) Some entity is heavily spamming the Bitcoin network for some malicious reason.
If that person is willing to pay for it, the network should just be able to handle it. Email spam makes up 97% of the 200 billion emails sent each day. The email system was adjusted in such a way that it can handle it, instead of making people wait longer to send an email.

Quote
The reason for such spam could be:
1) To promote BU (politically motivated).
2) To raise fees (miners which are motivated by greed).
3) Other.
No matter what the reason is, spam won't go away, which means the network should be able to handle it without interrupting normal usage.

Side-effect: You can mine absurdly large blocks and DOS everyone. Absurdly high orphan rates are just the cherry on top of the cake.
If a miner is willing to risk 12.5 BTC by making an absurdly large block, that's an expensive gamble.
