Include a particular hash in a transaction that gets mined in a block. This constitutes proof that the data which produced the hash existed at the time the block was mined. The proof is as strong as the blockchain is difficult to retroactively rewrite. |

no, my bet is on gvt agents who were trying to destroy Bitcoin. this board was covered with obvious trolls even back then and mtgox had just captured the public's attention for the first time with the run to 32. since then, we have found out an astounding number of facts about NSA's unabashed unconstitutional actions to invade privacy and perform sabotage such as Stuxnet, Gemalto, Prism, Merkel's cellphone, etc, etc. The SR agents were methodical, ruthless, and matter of fact about stealing SR coins with impunity. doesn't seem to far a stretch that gvt agents would steal from mtgox while taking it down at the same time. it would explain the radio silence on the whole issue as well as an attempt to bury the truth forever.
Would explain the persistent narrative about how the failure of Mt Gox still impacts the credibility of Bitcoin. It's just part of the psyop. |

I keep talking to regulators at conferences who believe bitcoin simply must change to bring it in line with other payment systems; unfortunately this means adding identity information to bitcoin transactions and making it possible to blacklist funds.
I'll continue to maintain that the best defense to this is to make bitcoin as widely used worldwide directly by people as end-users with their own wallets. If everyone just holds coins or uses bitpay and coinbase, it will be much easier to push regulation into the system. If usage grows globally to be a complicated mess of direct person-to-person usages and numerous small services spread around the world, it will be very hard for a single gov to push regulation in (even for the USSA). We should do the opposite and add more privacy features to clients. Adding finishing touches to an improved stealth address proposal that includes useful features like being usable on mobile wallets without requiring the help of a trusted third party server to identify your incoming payments. |

if their algos keep a continually falling lid on prices and price perceptions such that the market never "turns up" materially, funded by unlimited supplies of fiat only, then it is an effective social/economic attack that will inevitably sideline bitcoin as a useful currency. The exchanges that facilitate manipulative pricing algorithms on their platforms are accomplices in this attack on bitcoin and imho should be treated as such. The only thing to worry about is the spread of exchanges that do not allow users to withdraw real bitcoins on the blockchain. I haven't yet seen any of those. A the monument, I don't care how low they manipulate the price since the lower it goes the more bitcoins I can buy and transfer to cold storage each month. |

So it comes back to my original point. Everything is enabled, supported and depends on the central banks. They enable credit bubbles in the first place. Once they are either unwilling or unable to continue artificial support, credit will deleverage which will cause the market will go down. Their only alternative is to hit Cntl+P hard. The central banks only have two options: - They can utterly destroy their respective currencies
- They can force the governments of the world into operating a balanced budget with a real surplus.
Both of those options are politically impossible, and likely to cause a spontaneous existence failure of both governments and central banks. |

I won't buy a hardware wallet until I'm satisfied the hardware designers have earned their pay.
That means using custom circuits that minimize the need for turing-complete components and formal proofs of correctness.
Until then, I don't see them as being appreciably better than my air gaped Armory offline laptop.

People look at things the wrong way. Let's use a real-world example to show it:
Gold was a form of money. Silver was its lesser counterpart.
Fiat was created, based on gold. Now fiat is the main currency, while gold/silver are investment vehicles.
All of these have value. They are all convertible between one another. Just because fiat took over doesn't mean the others were destroyed/worthless.
I think BTC is the same way. I have very little doubts that it will be taken over by other currencies. But I think it will remain a main investment vehicle and therefore still have its use/value. It just won't be what we use for day-to-day transacting. Let's take a bunch of loosely-correlated facts, without any examination of context or cause-and-effect relationships, and hope the process of extrapolating conclusions from all this returns results more accurate than a random number generator. |
