261  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: 4 Antminer S1's on 1 PSU ? on: February 04, 2014, 10:06:01 AM
I have 3 overclocked running on a 1500W Silverstone using 4 PCIE power cables and 2 x dual molex to PCIE adapters (the ones you get with graphics cards). All cables are cool to touch.

Ye that psu is bad boy quality.

why only 4 pcie cables it offers upto 8, Is it to offload from the 12v rail?

most comfortable option is at  least 750 for 1, 1200 for 2, overclocked. they dont use all that power but its more the cable size, they tend too get warm with the lesser psu. the 1500 watts have good thick cables you dont feel anything.

i measures 490 watts overclocked at the wall per unit.
i have 2 ants oc-running on a 1kW bequiet powerzone 1000 with cool cables and 810W at wall

are  they overclocked also?

i just had a powercool 750watt psu go pop after a day on 1 s1, exchanged it and the second went after 30 mins!! whats am i doing wrong?

You might want a dummy plug for the ATX plug. I thinks someone mentioned this happening when the jumper wire shorted.

It sounds like the power supply is not high enough rated you might want to concider using gold rated or platinum.  I have a 750w corsair and unit overclocked and shorting the 24pin with a strong enough wire and each ant is running perfectly fine so far.

If you are using a basics none branded or generic and not modeler power supply or anything under gold rated you will get problems. Also make sure your using 1 pci-e cable per 6pin connector and not using 1 with the splatter on it to connect to both modules. I use 1 for each module so total use is 2 pci-e cables connected up.

yep absolutely right. Cheap Psu it was fine in my bitburner fury es for a few month But they don't consume as much. I'm using silverstone strider 1500watt and some corsair 650watt.

 Smiley all good then.

ok i see i felt as much , otherwise everyone would have done it. shut off at 70 thats high compared to some other machine avalons were at 60 i think.also could 400mhz over clock burn the board out?

Temperatures are all relative. Gen 1 Avalons had on heatsink temps which are lower than die which are lower than core. Gen 2 had on die and so temps allowed went down.

On top of that, chips aren't all built for the same heat. You'll have to look into the spec sheets if there are any around.

i thought those limits mentioned by ineedit were from some kind of specsheet?

I just tried a 3 pin fan on the second board on the miner.when you attach it to 3 pins from the top going g down the fan works at normal speed. When you connect it starting with the second pin from the top the new fan doesn't work but the stock fan ramps up in speed a lot in the ui it's at 3020 at the temps are down to mid 3os. Is it Ok to keep it like that? It would be great for overclocked miners.

It has same effect and as much use as you just driving your car in first gear so you can see the RPM counter near the red.  It would be a great way to help burn out you fan faster.

Ant's are happy at 50c and below, the fan is set to work hardest at 60c and the unit shuts down at 70c.

No 400Mhz will not burn out the board unless the components are out of spec but greater than that starts to push the VRM's and that could cause one to occur.

I run ant's at 400Mhz @ 50c in 23c ambient @2200-2500 rpm on a single fan. As spring turns to summer I will drop to 375Mhz or add cheap 130CFM fans, by the summer and assuming that the difficulty has not increased to make them unprofitable I will drop to 350MHz or below and add cheap 130CFM fans.

i see, sounds reasonable enought. And the cooling obviously is a great help for the overclocking process. it must get quite hot where you then. u.k is mostly cold even summer isnt too bad for minng.

when i check with a killawatt at stock it pulls 420watt at the wall at 400mhz getting 202ghs it pulls 490watts, round up to 500. at the moment its on 375mhz and getting 191ghs, temps are 46 - 47 and pulling 460 at the wall. but the pcie cables on the cheapy power supply are slightly warm, will be swapping over to the 650 corsair model. the size of the cable is an issue.

dogie, 1.5mm should be ideal fro 22a@12v. they would stay nice and cool. My zeus 1500watt, 3 ants on its at 375mhz, has thicker size diameter and they are cool, even when you loop, i.e one cable that continues on to the 2nd board its only slightly warm.

Perfect. I'd recommend getting a 750W as it will be able to power 2 miners (Ants or otherwise), or one large miner. 650W is a bit of a weird number.

do you mean 750 for 2 antminer boards( i.e 1 unit) or 2 whole units?

Anyone had any units blowing up when you over clock to 400mhz or what's the worst that could happen?

What hash rate does 400mhz correspond to?

200-204ghs

i used a powercool 750watt psu for antminer unit and after a day or so it popped the psu, i exchanged it and the second one went in 30 mins also it says 24 amps per 12v shouldnt that be enough whats the problem?
No PSU expert here, but I tend to stick with the high end brands. Corsiar is my first choice.

I am using a Corsair GS 600 without issues. I am not famluar with the brand you have.
Yep, go for a name brand. It'll pay itself off in reliability, generic PSUs tend to be rated very precariously.

yep from my info and advice from others theses machines need it, gone with silverstone strider 1500watt.

need a good fan to put on the other end for extraction to connect to the second board if poss, any ideas?

with a killawatt check, my s1 uses 420@stock and 490@200ghs 400mhz. put 3 on a 1350watt psu, which claims 1500 watt peak, was running fine on one batch but on another on of the s1 switches on and off, i assumed it was not getting enough power, underclocked it was fine.

was told that running the psu at peak reduces its life by 40% and may even damage it.

The 16 asics were showing without overclocking but it was still hitting 176 ghs.

im getting 16 asics showing up on chain 1 what does that mean?  also it made a beeping noise a few times first the began to hash?? ive overclocked it also and its hitting 203 so whats the issue??

temp is 47 and 48
