I have tried it, but with a pruned chain. I can confirm it was faster to download the full blockchain compared to doing the same thing (also pruned) on my SSD. Test results: at the start, it was limited by my Wifi speed (2-3 MB/s), later on it was limited by my CPU (i3).
Obviously I don't have enough ram to do this without pruning, so I can't test a rescan. My HDD takes about 40 minutes to do a full rescan (for instance when I import a private key).
If you're now using a slow HDD, I'd say switching to a SSD is enough for a big improvement. If it reads 500 MB/s, it can read the entire blockchain in 3 minutes.
Personally I only use ram-drives for temporary files. I don't want to have to backup data, although you could argue you can always download it again.

I often read about banks wanting to use blockchain, but once again it isn't clear what exactly they want to use it for. The statement from SBI (quote from the link in the OP): "The Consortium will promote discussion, from both technical and operational perspectives, on activities required in domestic and foreign exchange services to utilize blockchain and other new technologies, consolidate domestic and foreign exchange services, and build 24-hour and real-time remittance infrastructure, and will try to finish PoC by next March to move forward commercial base." I can't see how this can utilize a blockchain in any way that provides an advantage over current methods. |

Does anyone know how to change the search option so that it searches for a pattern ANYWHERE in the address, not just the Prefix?
That's very easy: Options:
-r Use regular expression match instead of prefix
(Feasibility of expression is not checked) ./vanitygen -r BTC Pattern: BTC Address: 1DQCGcFRXJGRCFTjMar49ySJ5iE9h BTCzp Privkey: 5Kk28XxGb5mpDpfEnmahtC8H5QjU8V8WyK6icZxRFiwJvzGZRP4 But: it searches 3 times slower than a normal search, and it only works on CPU, which is 25 times slower than using my GeForce. So it's fine for short prefixes like "BTC", it's a lot slower for the full "Bitcoin". Note that you don't need to do 1Bitcoin, unless you want the 1 in the middle of the Address too: ./vanitygen -r 1BTC Pattern: 1BTC Address: 1JqA7etDfXTxW44d8q5q 1BTC97qUS1FMYe Privkey: 5K4ugngtPmYdiS4CXeDw4HMV9Au8cYyV5fkrQdf1w4eRgtB4PZy Why would you want this? Thank you Joel for not being mean like the others I was in tears because of some of the comments because I didn't ask for charity I asked for a loan. If you want to borrow $1380 for 30 days and pay back $1725 (or more as Bitcoin is rising) after 30 days, you - being a business minded person - must have a solid plan on how to that kind of money. Or wait, you don't. And like all the other sad stories you're just hoping to get free money. The sad story seems to work though, anyone else would have gotten a big Red Trust by now. Even if you have the best intentions, you won't be able to pay it back. |

Several of London’s largest banks are looking to stockpile bitcoins in order to pay off cyber criminals who threaten to bring down their critical IT systems. Why would they need to "stockpile" Bitcoins? They're banks, they can just buy them at an exchange the moment they need them. Unless they just want some "criminal press" for Bitcoin. some banks were coming round to the view that it was cheaper to pay off the criminals than risk an attack. It's like negotiating with terrorists: the moment you do it, you're getting more attacks. Do we have any confirmed information that some bank actually paid the ransom already?
That's like having a big sign: Extort me! Much easier to hire technicians who know a thing or two about security and have them full time than hoarding Bitcoin
It's not just "some" technicians, banks have hundreds of IT-people on the payroll. I recently read (and can't find the link back) that Dutch bank ING is going to invest 800 million euro in its IT infrastructure. On a budget like that, keeping a few Bitcoin to stop a script kiddie with his DDOS could be a cheap short-term fix. |
