I have slightly changed the requirements for this giveaway.

We're at page 159 now in this topic, with 3171 posts in total. I'm building a bot to scrape this topic, so I spend less time copy/pasting names.
When posting your username, please use this format: Username: Bob
Nothing else on that line. Example:
Username: Alice
Most people use this format already, 12 out of 20 on page 158 are in this format. No need to edit old posts, just change the format from now on.
Some people post just a name, that may fail in the future. And some people post long stories: no need for that, but if you do, don't do it on the same line as your username.

Thank you for your cooperation!
26263  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator/miner [v0.22] on: September 04, 2016, 04:25:36 PM
No they don't. Mycelium needs masterseed. And Electrum needs walletpassphrase.
When you first start Electrum, it gives you the option: you can use either walletpassphrase or import your own private keys. Unfortunately, you can't use both.
My guess it they try to protect people against stupidity user error. This way, a user can't think the walletpassphrase is enough to backup the imported private keys.
It's also the main reason I don't use Electrum, I want a wallet that imports keys and handles new addresses by itself too.

If the wallet doesn't allow the WIF private key to be imported, no other format is going to do it.
26264  Economy / Invites & Accounts / Re: Deep web bitcoin accounts on: September 04, 2016, 01:57:48 PM
Eg. 12.872btc selling for 6btc

The reason they are willing to lose money is probably because the bitcoins are stolen.
That would be the most expensive mixer service ever! Or, more likely, a scam: you lose your 6 BTC, and never get the 12.872 BTC.
Even if it would be true, and the seller is trying to make a tracker lose the scent of his 12.872 BTC, the seller can't know if the 6 BTC he gets aren't stolen as well. One way or another, it makes no sense selling it at this price.
26265  Economy / Auctions / Re: Bitcointalk account :) uid is under 35 on: September 04, 2016, 11:23:11 AM
Three UID sub 35 accessed in a two day period after an absence of five years?  Quite likely hacked...
Hacking (aka guessing the password?) 3 accounts from the same age is not very likely. It could also be they're all from the same owner, although I see no reason why someone would have created 3 accounts to a brand-new forum back then. It could also be the first sales-tread reminded other old-account-owners to sell them.
Even if they're hacked, the original owner clearly doesn't use them anymore, although that should be "frowned upon" no matter what.
26266  Economy / Auctions / Re: Bitcointalk account :) uid is under 35 on: September 04, 2016, 09:30:26 AM
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=11
yes selling account is allowed but very frowned upon so disclosing the account, you can get tagged red and the account will be no more value
Account #11 is very likely too, indeed. A very old account that was recently active.
The "frowning upon sales" has to do with buying accounts for trust, Activity or post history for signature campaigns. A 6 years old Newbie account has neither trust nor activity, it mainly has nostalgic value.
If someone is willing to pay for that, I'd say is a great way to show he likes the forum, and I see no reason to frown.
26267  Economy / Auctions / Re: Bitcointalk account :) uid is under 35 on: September 04, 2016, 08:40:09 AM
yes. I'm selling an account that was one of the first 35 on this forum.
1. admin
2. doesn't exist
3. satoshi
4. sirius (last active Aug 6, 2015)
5. doesn't exist
6. nandnor (12 posts, last active yesterday: Bitcointalk account. UID = 6.

I put my money on nandnor. Is that the account? The oldest newbie on Bitcointalk!
26268  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Megaupload + Bitcoins on: September 04, 2016, 07:29:28 AM
This way even if people would upload illegal, copyrighted materials it wouldn't be possible to blame the service for it.
I now remember I used his service once, many years ago. I uploaded 1 video, just as a test, and after a few seconds it was done! In other words, it noticed it's a video that's already on the network, and didn't need to upload the rest of it.
If he's going to create the same service using data encryption, and the server doesn't know what content you upload, he can't do this anymore. If 1000 people upload the same movie, it will have to be on his servers 1000 times.
If he's going to be competing with torrents, and every movie is on his servers many times, he'll need a lot of diskspace. Let's go crazy, upload the full blockchain as a backup!

With the start date 4.5 months away, he has to keep the hype up or it'll be forgotten before he starts it.
26269  Other / Meta / Automate downloading a thread on: September 02, 2016, 02:19:25 PM
I've been running a giveaway in Games and Rounds for a few months, and I would like to build a script to download all entries once a day. I know some threads are processed that way, so it must be possible.

I can download the source per page, but it has a lot of unnecessary data in there. Is there a way to view topics without all extra data?
What I need is the user's name, level ("Member") and the post.

The source looks like this:

26272  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator/miner [v0.22] on: September 01, 2016, 08:27:12 AM
Or just running the code at an old 386DX computer for a few seconds and will find the key? Perhaps? It is. The chance is 1:2^160 but it is theoretically possible.
For some reason this always pops up. Fact is: it hasn't happened in the 7 years Bitcoin exists, and it won't happen. Ever.
The chance is small. Very small. Smaller than you can imagine.

There is no case of human death by a meteorite. How have you calculate the chance?
I have never read the books such cases have been recorded.
Any proofs?  Wink
Not reading about it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. In 2013 a meteor in Russia was caught on camera. The 20 metre wide rock entered at 12 miles per second and exploded with the energy of 500 kilotonnes of TNT. It indured 1210 people.
Most people know the most famous story: Tunguska event in 1908.

The problem with statistics is: people tend to think the unlikely thing will happen if it benefits them. For example: winning the lottery with a 1 in 50 million chance. "Hey, that could be me!"
Getting killed in traffic (30,000 people per year in the USA alone): "Nah, that won't be me!".

This links gives some examples of real events with a 1 in a million chance. And that's just 1 in a million, which is millions upon millions times more likely than finding a private key that belongs to an existing address.

26276  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Exchanges , a "Free" alternative to mixers ? on: August 31, 2016, 06:04:50 AM
Short answer: yes Smiley

Long answer: mixers (say they) don't log transactions. Exchanges log everything. If you've provided your real identity to the exchange, you make it easier to find you instead of making it harder.
I guess it depends on who you're trying to hide from. If it's law enforcement, they're likely to get information anyway (assuming they can find which address belongs to which exchange). Then again, if you go through several exchanges in several countries, and add a few online casinos to your chain, it takes a lot of effort to track you.

Can you explain why this is wrong? http://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/a/23045
The attack described there requires you to be a miner. That is irrelevant in this scenario, but it is the reason why the original white paper from Satoshi recommends 6 confirmations.

Quote
Im interested to allow like <$10 transactions to be 0 confirmations
You can do that, just add the cost of a possible double spend to your price. It will happen eventually.

A transaction with 0 confirmations is like someone showing you the money, but you don't have it in your hands yet. If you give him your part of the deal, he can run off and keep the money.

If the transaction has a low fee, or even no fee at all, a scammer has much more time before the transaction gets confirmed, which make a successful double spend more likely.
