26401  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: 1000 BTC Giveaway - what might be happening. on: August 03, 2016, 06:34:51 PM
We can't really know whether anyone is going to actually get 1000 BTC and whether that user isn't an alt of OP (unless it is someone that is already known/trusted).
True. But for much smaller amounts, people usually ask for escrow. Considering this guy easily throws away $16k in Bitcoin, I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt here.

I agree. We'll know in a week.
26404  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: 1000 BTC Giveaway - what might be happening. on: August 03, 2016, 05:16:54 PM
1) The coins come from a 2013 address, not linked at all with Bitfinex. SOURCE
Couldn't this address be related to Bitfinex since 2013? Maybe I'm wrong here...

Fact is, he did give some people 1 BTC (or more), and he did throw away 10 BTC with a 1.9887 BTC free. That shows to me he doesn't care about money worth a mid-range family car.

I am very curious what his motives are. I hope he'll talk more, it feels like watching a bank robbery live but totally anonymous. I'd love to talk to him personally, but I won't PM him (I guess he has about 10k messages now asking for money).

I also like the dead man's switch, the whole topic reads like pure popcorn Cheesy Maybe he just wants attention and a pat on the back for his hack. And by throwing around loads of money he sure got attention!

Username : dsffdssdf

I'll limit myself to the things that - in my opinion - could be improved. No need to tell you guys what's good already, this is shorter. Part of it I've shared in the main PD-topic already, but I'll keep it complete here.

1. When I click ANIMATIONS: OFF, it still animates. The bet-slider keeps jumping around, and the BALANCE keeps having an overlay that moves downward on every bet. Clicking "FAIRNESS" for example also animates, and disabling/enabling chat too.
2. The low contrast with colors is bad to read (on my not-so-expensive laptop screen). Chat-colors are okay (they weren't in PD3), but MY BETS for instance is hard to read. I can read it when I'm straight in front of my screen, but on the bottom of my screen I can barely read MY BETS. Blue text on a light blue background is a lot harder to read than black on white.
3. I want to be able to change my user name! Why? I picked dsffdssdf, just hitting the keyboard a few times with my left hand. I don't want to start over, but I would like to be able to change it to something that I can at least remember.
4. When I click BET AMOUNT, the whole 0.000000000 is selected. This may be easy for high rollers, but the rest of us just want to edit the 4th or further decimal. It would be nice if it doesn't select it on the first click. I prefer this: double-click to select, single click to start typing at that position.
5. AUTOMATED BETTING stops when I click ACCOUNT, but when I go back there, I still have to click STOP ROLLING. It would be nice if it keeps rolling when I navigate away from that view.
6. Instead of setting a Number of Rolls,  a stop-loss and a take-profit option would also be nice for AUTOMATED BETTING.
7. STATISTICS is too far away, hiding under  ACCOUNT > STATISTICS. This was easier to access on PD3. The same with TRANSACTIONS, that shouldn't be hiding in a sub-tab under ACCOUNT. I prefer it directly on the main page.
8. LOYALTY ACHIEVEMENTS are wrong. For example: Account 7+ days old: 43% Established. My account is more than a year old, so I should be 100% Veteran (now it says 2%).
9. SETTINGS shows CHANGE LANGUAGE, but the only option is English.
10. When I'm using AUTOMATED BETTING and click ALL BETS or HIGH ROLLERS, it jumps back to MY BETS on the next bet.
11. MY BETS only shows the last 30 bets. It would be nice to be able to see all bets ("click to go to the next page") or even search through bets (search on amount and prediction).

26408  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Monetizing VPN traffic? on: August 03, 2016, 08:11:55 AM
Bitcointalk uses "units of evil" when someone registers from a VPN/TOR-address. It then asks for a payment in Bitcoin to be able to register.
You could do this too: instead of blocking the traffic, throw up a financial barrier to allow the user to access the site anyway.

No, if half of all addresses have been used there will very likely (just shy of 100%) a collision.
Nice "if", but of course this won't happen. Using half the addresses will never happen, using 0.0000000001% of the addresses will also never happen.

Well for one you didnt check for all possible two symbol prefixes (missed capital letters)
I did "-i": case insensitive.

Quote
but the actual reason why there are only 2160 different possible address is different. There are 2256 private keys. The public key to each private key gets hashed with RIPEMD160 among another algorithm (SHA256) which has a 160 bit output. Thus the can never be more than 2160 addresses. It is assumed that each address has 296 private keys that allow spending coins from them. This might not be true for all keys as its unclear whether the distribution is uniform. Its possible that some addresses have 296+X keys while others have 296-X keys, where X is not zero.
This doesn't explain why I don't find 1 public key for every private key. This is the other way around: 1 public key has a lot of (unknown!) private keys, but each private key should have 1 public key, right?
If I run vanitygen for 1 second searching for all possible prefixes at 127 kkeys/s, why don't I get 127,000 keys?

Somehow, I thought the odds of a collision should be on the order of something like 10^-1000. But even that I wouldn't consider as quite impossible on a long enough timeline...

And don't forget about pure luck
This is the reason I said it's hard to comprehend very small chances (and very large numbers). If you're that lucky, why don't you guess the winning lotto numbers every time?

One more example to try to put it into perspective: even though there are billions of stars in billions of galaxies, each weighing billions of tonnes, each containing billions and billions of atoms, the visible universe is estimated to contain between 1078 and 1080 atoms.
Only 1080 tiny particles, such a small number.
26413  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Vanitygen: Vanity bitcoin address generator/miner [v0.22] on: August 02, 2016, 10:31:25 AM
How unlikely is this? I mean if it is today considered highly unlikely, what will happen tomorrow when, say, some system could create not just 60M keys per second but 60MM keys per second (and check in real-time against existing addresses at that)? Wouldn't this render Bitcoin useless and worthless immediately? To me, it is always fishy when something is considered impossible, since impossible things have a tendency to actually happen one day...
It's hard to comprehend the full impact of statistics: it's not something you can "feel" being right. Rough estimate: it's less likely than a plane crashing on your head the moment you crash your car the day you won the lottery. And yet, people say: "but it is possible". "Very unlikely" just doesn't cut it Cheesy
This image is often used to illustrate how unlikely it is:

Without checking the math, I'll quote this user:
Given your example of 1 billion users at 10 addresses each:

There are 2^160 or about 1,460,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 possible addresses
In your scenario, 1,000,000,000 people are using 10 addresses each for a total of 10,000,000,000 possible addresses
10,000,000,000 / 2^160 should yield the probability of a collision occurring
10,000,000,000 / 2^160 = 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000684

So the chances of a collision occurring in your scenario are approximately 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000684%

See why we don't consider collisions an issue?

Quote
2^160 possible addresses
Do I understand correctly that not all private keys have a valid public key?
I ran this:
Code:
./vanitygen -i 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 1a 1b 1c 1d 1e 1f 1g 1h 1i 1j 1k 1l 1m 1n 1o 1p 1q 1r 1s 1t 1u 1v 1w 1x 1y 1z -o tempfile.txt -q -k
for 11.345 seconds. It checks about 127 kkey/s, and found 5366 keys. That results in 473 keys/s being found, while 270 times more keys have been checked.

So what I mean is my public key is '04AC6402...' can I use that to create multiple addresses, all at the same time?
I've been wondering about this for a while now. My understanding of the encryption isn't enough to know whether or not this is secure. If you do this, and one key would get compromised, I can imagine the other keys are no longer secure too. But I'm not sure. To be safe, I wouldn't use the same partial private key twice.

Quote
Basically I'm trying to save some time rather than generating 100 addresses on an Ubuntu Live USB then going to Vanitygen and 1 by 1 find the part private key.
Can't you figure out how to install vanitygen on the Ubuntu LIVE distribution? It shouldn't be that hard. Once you've figured it out, you can save it as a script for next time.
Using OCL on a LIVE distribution could be a lot harder, but for 5 digit searches you should be fine without it.

But it should be possible, just remove the random part and insert a specific starting point and remove the rekey intervall, or am I wrong?
This is insecure. If you would do this, someone could find your private key if he knows where you started your search.
Just create (secure) backups of your private key in case your drive crashes.

Code:
vanitygen -r ^[1-9]{7}
This gets me only about 90 kkey/s.

You cant use the graphics card while using regex so CPU is your only option.
Correct. As an alternative, you can work around this by creating an input-file that contains all possible numbers you want to search. I've tested it, and it gives me 3.4 Mkey/s using oclvanitygen.
But with a 40 MB inputfile (8 digit numbers from 11111111 to 19999999, excluding the ones with a 0 in it) oclvanitygen already consumes 2 GB memory, and it tells me WARNING: better match throughput is possible using vanitygen on the CPUvanitygen might be faster for low difficulty.
I tried to upload my input-file to pastebin, but my laptop ran out of memory copy/pasting it.

To summarize, using an input-file might much faster if you want addresses with 9-10 (or more) digits at the beginning of the address, but your system needs to have a lot of memory.
