When I went back in to my wallet to see my receive keys, the problem just took care of itself! I guess there was just some lag with multibit and the blockchain or some sort of glitch. I reset the blockchain several times over the last few days and it never worked so I dont know why things are working now, but they are. What a relief! I have some big lessons learned from this scare and I have since exported my key to a couple of different offline locations.
When opening my key file in notepad, are all of the displayed characters the actual key? If was to print out my key file from notepad would that be my "paper wallet/key"? Or do i have to open the key file with another program to visually see what the key is? Thanks for the help, even though this problem just sorted itself Ill still make a little donation to you.
I guess it's due to Multibit's glitch. I would recommend you to send some long term coins to paper wallets ( www.bitaddress.org), and back those up at multiple off site places like fireproof safes etc. If the key file is not exported via the encrypted method, then yes, the actual keys are included (not a single key as there's change addresses etc). I would still use the paper wallet method though for the peace of the mind. PS: My signature address will work nicely, thanks again! ![Grin](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/grin.gif)

Hi John,
Yes I have an active connection when this happens and as far I know all of my firewalls are ok with multibit. I am running version 0.4.23, just downloaded on april 2. I made a post yesterday titled "Multibit Lost BTC" that explains the situation a little further. I have made newb mistakes that i have been learning from. It is possible that I lost my original wallet file and my BTC for good because I never did export my priv key anywhere, but I think I am opening the correct and original wallet file (because I think Multibit automatically saves wallet files, unless the real original was automatically overwritten somehow), and that my 0 balance must be due to the message that is showing up. What do you think?
Please check the BTC addresses in the Multibit client on blockchain.info - see if the coins are there first.

There's no way to reverse the transaction. If the person's indeed hacking you, why won't he move all coins out?

What does the following message mean in the multibit client?: Unable to load "https://multibit.org/version.txt". The error was "java.net.UnknownHostException multibit.org"Does this explain why my multibit wallet shows me with 0 BTC? I think that it must, but I dont know what it means or what to do about it. Please help I will make a nice reward donation to one that can help me. Thanks! Do you have a working connection to the net, and all firewalls are okay with Multibit? Can you reach https://multibit.org/version.txt via an internet browser? (Note that it states 0.4.23)

The coins, that's a no brainer question.

I'm new to this type of currency, but I've spent a few hours reading about it and it seems incredibly awesome to me. I love the idea and workings behind it. I'm still not sure whether I should actually try my hand at mining myself. I have some questions, which may seem redundant- however if I am going to put the effort in I like to ask at least a few questions myself to be sure before starting. List: - All I have in this world is an okay gaming rig, I use it constantly. Should I be using my only computer (my baby!) for this? Is it viable to only mine at certain times? I'm not sure I really understand fully. Does leaving it on overnight really use that much electricity? If it matters I have an GTX 560ti.
- How long does it take to actually get bitcoins? I've seen a lot of answers to this, and it looks like the best idea is to join a pool. How much is up to chance? Would it take all of eternity to make just one coin?
- Litecoins vs Bitcoins?
I have so many questions I really just jumbled a bunch of them into a deceivingly small list. Sorry. Thanks for taking your time if you can answer any of my questions. Peace. ![Grin](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/grin.gif) No, not viable even if you have ATI cards (vastly better at mining as compared to any nVidia cards).

Whoa, thanks again for going out of the line to help us here. I was starting to think my first uncollaterized loan in ages had went wrong again....

Nah, this is bitcointalk, not altcointalk/cryptocointalk. We'll have to add all kinds of subforums that might just die off one day.

I'd suggeyou to buy the remaining sum directly.

So everyone's asking me how I store escrow funds - I store them in Offline Armory with the seed backed up in encrypted paper wallets in multiple places including but not limited to a bank vault and lawyer's safe.

Yes, you can. Your private key is actually on client-side, so you can export the keys to other clients like QT or even blockchain.info.

I'm preparing to release JohnCoins when I have time. It'll be even more fair than Bytecoin or Bitcoin as it's released later than both, thus allowing more people that were cryptocoin aware come on the boat.

Can I move this thread to Politics & Society now? I don't think the past few pages had anything to do with the forum itself...

Thank you. That balance for sure can be withdrawn with the private key? Yes. And only with the private key.

I have a question: I can see the PP issue, but what is your opinion on this particular situation?
An Ebay seller has up for bid his early 60gh BFL Single order. Very early supposedly. He specified that PP or any other pmt than BTC would require prior permission AND that he would be willing to accept a good offer to take down the auction. I contacted him and offered a bank-wire of $8500 (about midway between the various comparable closings that day). This wire wouldn't require that he provide me his banking info, just a Cell# or email to give my bank, which then sends him withdrawal instructions.
He turned this down and said only BTC. So I asked "How many BTC?" Naturally I am expecting a number commensurate with at least 8500 USD in BTC but he sends back a request for 40 (or ~5500 USD as of that time).
Now I feel like this is a scam. Why would a bank wire not be acceptable for an item that he won't even possess until long after the funds have appeared in his acct? And am I not on the completely scammable and helpless end of the transaction now if I send BTC as that is completely irreversible? Do I sound paranoid or reasonably suspicious?
Reasonably suspicious. Don't do it, it's probably a scam.

You know Allah is gonna be mighty pissed at you if you don't repay?
i'm not trying to buy your trust, but i place a very high value on reputation online and offline. anyone will be pissed at a debtor. The only problem here is that nothing's stopping you from abandoning this account once the loan is done, and getting another account again.
