2742  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is a "Bitcoin Supernode"? on: May 17, 2013, 02:15:36 PM
Some speculate that in the future, it will take a beefy server with a fast internet connection to run a well-connected bitcoin node. Rather than running their own nodes, most users will push their transactions to these "supernodes" as well as poll the blockchain from them. Thus, users won't have to store the blockchain or maintain a node. One could say Blockchain.info is a supernode in practice.

This sounds interesting.

Is there anywhere to read up on these predictions?
2743  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Whatever happened to the Bitcoin Police? on: May 17, 2013, 02:14:15 PM
I remember hearing a lot about these "Bitcoin Police" a year or two ago. But now it seems they have disappeared?

What happened?

Bitcoin is still full of rogues, scoundrels, and swindlers. Why aren't they doing their job?
2744  Other / Meta / Re: Annoying "reputation" threads in off topic.... on: May 17, 2013, 02:10:30 PM
Yes, the off-topic forum has been ruined.

Please do something about this.

Thank you.
2745  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has the Bitcoin Foundations' lawyer made any statements about recent events? on: May 17, 2013, 02:05:15 PM
It is interesting to note that half of the board is now involved in legal disputes. I don't think there is anything wrong with them pursuing legal action against each other. However, maybe they should consider expanding the board. Maybe add some more diversity. Bitcoin has grown and is still growing a lot.

Bitcoin Foundation issued their official statement on Coinlab vs. MtGox: https://bitcoinfoundation.org/blog/?p=180

Thanks for the link.

I was hoping to hear some legal opinion regarding the matters at hand from Mr. Murck. But I understand why we will not now.

Maybe come to a compromise:

Buy as many Casascius Coins as you feel comfortable with. An amount that you would not lose sleep over if it disappeared forever. Put these away in a safe place and just completely cut yourself off from bitcoin for an arbitrary time period. Maybe 2, 3, or 5 years. And when the time comes you can reevaluate your investment. But until then, just try to completely forget about bitcoin. Don't read the forums, don't check the price.
2749  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Has the Bitcoin Foundations' lawyer made any statements about recent events? on: May 17, 2013, 01:29:46 PM
I believe Patrick Murck works both for the Bitcoin Foundation and for CoinLab.

Oh! Well that explains it.

Obviously a major conflict of interest there...

Thanks!

I still feel bad for you. But your attitude is really making it hard for people to sympathise.

You did not follow best practices regarding storing and securing your bitcoins. At the very least you should have had your wallet encrypted. And since you were inactive anyway, you should have been storing them in cold storage, completely offline, and this would not have happened.

Sorry.
2751  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Has the Bitcoin Foundations' lawyer made any statements about recent events? on: May 17, 2013, 01:15:47 PM
Such as Coinlab vs Gox, and the Gox seizure?

I checked his twitter but didn't see anything.

Don't you think it would be interesting to hear his thoughts on these issues?

I am planning on learning vim in the near future. I think the more people see this post the better.

2756  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is a "Bitcoin Supernode"? on: May 16, 2013, 06:48:02 PM
I think I understand individuals running the software and being a node on the network relaying transactions and such.

But google seems to fail me when searching for specifics on what exactly a "Bitcoin Supernode" is.

It's when you believe yourself to be an extremely important person, then completely fuck up a simple get-together screaming bloody murder, fleeing from a luxury hotel because you believe they are out to kill you when they turn off your water after you've made a complete mess of the place and deny paying your bills, then keep mumbling about how you and your friends are armed and trained as soldiers and eventually get checked into a mental instituation. That's when you're a bitcoin supernode.

I'm not even joking. I wish I was, but I'm not.

I have recently been following that little saga as well. Which made me curious as to whether there was some substance behind this whole "Supernode" thing. Like maybe there's a technical reason behind it like someone who runs a server which provides the equivilent of x number of normal nodes running on the network. Or if it was just some imagined title like you seem to be suggesting.

If it's not a technical thing, what is the intended point of the title? What would a "Supernode" do?

It a very confusing. Because many users of bitcoin are nodes on the network. And throwing around this "Supernode" word seems to imply something related to that.

Also, 20 BTC is actually a pretty cheap lesson.

Just stop now. Seriously. There's no way you will look back and be happy if you bet another bitcent.
2760  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1 BTC if you ask me the RIGHT question. on: May 16, 2013, 06:17:38 PM
Hell, I might as well get myself one.

I'll be finished before the first confirmation and by the time she finds out it's a double spend I'll be gone!

Isn't bitcoin marvelous?
