Yeah I thought tourism would have contributed a lot more to Thailand's economy.

The contribution made by tourism is sometimes difficult to measure, so most of the statisticians under-estimate its contribution to the GDP. Although the official figures are 6%, I believe that in reality, it is much more. Possibly in the 10-15% range.

I think that's reasonable to assume. They almost certainly underestimate because a lot of people live here full time and might not be considered tourists by the stats but they send their money from outside the country and spend it on things like rent, food, cars ect.
2282  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Thai military seizes power in coup on: June 04, 2014, 04:26:14 PM
There is a small decline (~19%) in the arrival of tourists from China. For the other groups, there is no change.

We'll see how the coup will affect the post April numbers. I think it might have a noticeable effect. In reality it's not dangerous for tourists to come but I think a lot of foreigners falsely assume that the Army is dangerous. I've personally seen quite a few people asking and being very worried about their upcoming trips. With some even canceling altogether.

Even during the famine years of 1930s the population continued to grow.
Now, after the independence the decvline is striking.
From: http://yablor.ru/blogs/dve-ukraini/3638493

At least the population decline in Ukraine during the 1991-2014 period (~12%) was a bit milder when compared to that occurred in Baltic states such as Latvia and Lithuania (~20%).

Wow, that's quite a decline. Do you know what caused such a drastic decline in population over that timer period?

Was dank always like this or is it just an act? Cant imagine people would loan him money if he was always this way,.

Dank has always been a character but a lot of people loaned him money because he had stated that his parents are upper-middle class. So people assumed that if there were problems and push came to shove Dank would get the money to pay the people back from his parents.

I wouldn't worry at all about coming to Thailand as a tourist. The curfew was an annoyance but now that it's lifted in Pattaya, Samui, and Phuket that's going to take care of a big percentage of tourists who are going to want to be out at night.

Yes... a large majority of the tourists usually stays at Pattaya and Phuket. Those places were not much affected even during the opposition protests. So it seems that tourists are very much safe in Thailand.

Yes ofcourse the places where the tourists come, they keep them clean and clear of protestors.
So the tourist dont see what is really happening in the country, if they would see what was really happening.
Maybe they wouldnt come and throw money in the economy, So ofcourse they will keep those people as ignorant as possible.

My brother and a few friends are going to thailand soon, I hope everything will be cool then.

The thing is there isn't really anything happening. There's no violence any longer now that the Army has taken control. Even in Bangkok tourists would be safe. They might see a lot of Army personnel with guns and that might be frightening for them, but it's not dangerous.
2286  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Hunger Games style Thai protests on: June 04, 2014, 03:19:49 PM
Uh no...Tourism isn't even close to the majority of the Thai economy. You should get your facts straight.

Hmmm... seems like you are right there. Tourism contributes to around 6% of the GDP of Thailand. But still, it is a very significant figure. Most of the European nations have it at less than 1%.

It's very significant for certain provinces like Phuket where their economy is heavily based around tourism. But there are 77 provinces if you include Bangkok and there is a wide range of industry taking place across the country.
2287  Economy / Economics / Re: advantage bitcoin over other payment methods online on: June 04, 2014, 03:15:07 PM
I would add that it is also safer. Paying with a credit card or check requires handing over information about your account. Often all the information needed to access your money. With bitcoin I can pay without divulging anything that gives any access to additional money. Even if my account is hacked, the attacker can see my purchases but can't spend.

Well, that's arguable I think. If you're 100% sure computer wise then bitcoin is safe as long as you don't make any big mistakes like losing your wallet or sending to the wrong address, but these things seem to happen to a lot of people right now.

With credit cards if someone uses your card fraudulently they company will refund the money as long as you sign some papers. I had my credit card number stolen before and it wasn't an issue getting it cleared up. But of course you're paying for this safety through fees and interest.

I'm certainly not saying credit cards are better than bitcoin but at this point it's not necessarily clear that bitcoin is safer for the average person.

Thailand is a very safe country in general and with the Army in control it's even safer really. There's been minor peaceful anti coup protests but in reality the majority of Thai people support the coup and are happy to see Thailand back on track to stability.
2289  Other / Off-topic / Re: Underground group (criminals) at bitcointalk.org on: June 04, 2014, 01:16:05 PM
The thing is this forum is operated in a "free market" sort of way so scammers and other undesirables are free to attempt to do as they wish and it's up to the community to get the message out on who is and who is not a scammer.

Even if this so called underground group did exist I doubt it would be possible to shut it down even if they forum wanted to or had a policy of actively banning or going after scammers.
2290  Other / Off-topic / Re: IF YOU HAD 1,000,000 DOLLARS WHAT WOULD YOU BUY??? on: June 04, 2014, 01:13:06 PM
I would do absolutely nothing with it, other than stick it into a secured bank. FDIC only insures up to $250k, so maybe 4 banks.

Really, in reality, I'd look at CDs / other ways to earn a bit more interest off the money stably. My living expenses are about $20k a year, so if I could generate even 2% annually, I'd be able to live off the interest alone, for now.

In the long run it would still be much better to doing something to earn the money to pay your living expenses since it's much better to have that interest compounding and making your more money in the long run. If you just take it all out you end up costing yourself more money in the long run which you'll need eventually at some point in your life anyway since inflation is going to eat away at you year after year.
2291  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Can the receiver send back to your address? on: June 04, 2014, 01:10:31 PM
you may not see the address in your address list anymore,
because when you sent money it sent the remainder
of what was left in your address (change) back to
another address in the wallet.

So the sending address has 0 balance now and that's
why its not showing... but its still part of your wallet.

but like others said, its setting bad precedent to
have people assume they can just send back to
you, even though it works with electrum.

Yeah, personally I don't support people doing that at all. I just wanted to make sure I knew what I was doing with Electrum, because like you said the address it's self doesn't show up in any obvious way on the Electrum client. At least I couldn't find it...

Thanks for the answers everyone.

If westerners stopped going on holiday in Thailand (not very likely) until there are democratic elections, it would send a much more powerful message to the military regime.
Thailand is undoubtedly growing in popularity as a tourist destination and is advertised in multiple tourism brochures and travel guidebooks.
No doubt Thailand needs the tourists .... without all these tourists Thailand would be a poor 3rd world country....

Uh no...Tourism isn't even close to the majority of the Thai economy. You should get your facts straight.

Also, the Army is straightening the country out. It needs straightening out in the political sector badly, first and foremost.

Most people assume automatically that the Army must be bad guys taking power for themselves, but in reality that's not the case at all.
2293  Economy / Economics / Re: Mark Cuban pinpoints the one thing Silicon Valley has that other US tech hubs... on: June 04, 2014, 01:05:04 PM
A lot of VC's like Y combinator invest in hundreds of start ups and hope that a few of them work out for the big pay off. So far it's worked out well for them, with companies like AirBnB and Dropbox just to name a couple.

The idea of playing the long shots and hoping to get all your money back seems to be a popular method of investing in Silicon Valley. You can't miss out if you invest a little in every reasonable idea would be their reasoning I would guess.
2294  Economy / Economics / Re: Why would sales in Bitcoins decline on Overstock? on: June 04, 2014, 01:00:53 PM
Everyone have been looking for big retail companies to come on board, with digital currency.

Thing is, the Bitcoin community is not supporting this.

It was reported that on the 9th January 2014, when Overstock became the first major retailer in the world to start accepting Bitcoin, they made sales worth US$126,000 in Bitcoin.

As of 13 March 2014, Overstock Bitcoin income had shrunk to under 1% of their normal daily cash intake.

Source "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overstock.com"

My question is this. Why not support these ground breaking companies?, to proof to the rest of the retailers, that bitcoin has huge potential income.

Or are we hoarding coins for potential investment returns?

Usually companies are going to see a surge in bitcoin sales when they start to offer it as a payment option. In order for that number to keep growing bitcoin is going to have to be adopted as an alternative payment system by more and more average people who would otherwise use PayPal or their credit cards to purchase things online.

Maybe bitcoin is growing in that regard but the price isn't a great indicator of consumer adoption. I would like to see some good evidence showing that more and more people are starting to choose bitcoin over other alternative payment systems. I guess keeping an eye on bitpay is one good way to watch that.
2295  Economy / Economics / Re: advantage bitcoin over other payment methods online on: June 04, 2014, 12:57:17 PM
Hi all,

doing an assignment for school and I would like to find information on if and if so why it is cheaper to pay with bitcoin instead of a debitcard or a creditcard when purchasing something online or with a debitcard even in a physical location. I would like to find numbers on the costs involved in these payments?

Thx a lot

One big advantage compared to payment companies like PayPal is the fact that you cannot have your account arbitrarily locked and your funds frozen/stolen from you by the company. PayPal is notorious for locking peoples accounts and not being receptive to customers who attempt to cooperate.
2296  Economy / Economics / Re: Do you think China will completely BAN bitcoin? on: June 04, 2014, 12:53:41 PM
Bitcoin is p2p, but everyone knows that a ban in a few important countries, with their exchanges being closed, would be a major step back for bitcoin.

That would spook major investors. The price of bitcoin would drop like a stone. Perhaps, that wouldn't kill it, but it would take years to recover.

Luckily most countries have a political system that would prohibit an outright ban. In the US for example the courts would likely overturn any such attempt on constitutional grounds.

How do you figure it's unconstitutional?

2298  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Should Goat stop scamming? on: June 04, 2014, 07:46:02 AM

He was banned.  Not sure why they let him back...

Basically the short version of the story is this.  Goat made up several businesses to raise a ton of BTC from duped investors.  Some of those businesses include a nonexistent arbitrage bot, a mining company that had no mining equipment, and a rice patty field in a 3rd world country (I missed a few but these were the most outrageous)...  He then took all the raised BTC and dumped it into a ponzi scheme.  He made a small fortune from this, and then when the ponzi collapsed, all of his businesses suddenly stopped and investors ate the loss.  He then tried to stir up as much trouble as he could, to try and make it look like the exchange did something wrong.  He is still trying to pin this blame on the exchange even after others were able to migrate with no issues whatsoever.  No matter that he was selling investments that did not exist...  Falsely issuing securities of nonexistent companies to divert investor funds into a ponzi scheme for his own gain while leaving them all the risk.  That is Goat.

TL;DR

1. Raise Bitcoin from investors pretending to offer multiple safe investments.
2. Invest everything in the riskiest thing possible.
3. Keep all the dividends from risky investment.
4. When investment goes bad, say businesses fail and blame the exchange.
5. Buy a Bugatti  Huh

I'm just a bystander in all of this but I find it very suspicious that you would post such an obviously inaccurate post. Anyone who has been reading bct.org for a while can plainly see that the way you presented that is false.

One thing I'm not clear on, I'm assuming by the exchange you mean GLBSE right? Obviously if you're talking about GLBSE I think it's safe to say closing and down and taking everyones money is "doing something wrong".

And as far as him creating "fake business" he had posted pics of a room full of computers full of gpus so obviously there was some mining equipment.

The sharecropping idea if I remember correctly was after pirate's ponzi had imploded so you're claim of him taking all this money from other businesses and putting it in to pirate doesn't add up. And I don't specifically remember him taking any money for that yet anyway. And there's no reason to think it's necessarily a bad idea to invest in something like that. It's different that's for sure, and I'm not saying I'd be lining up to invest on that one, but nothing wrong with new ideas for btc investment.

He operated a pass through fund for the known ponzi. So yes people bought shares through him to participate in in Pirate's giant ponzi. Everyone who had any idea of what was going on knew it was a ponzi. At that point half the forum was gambling their money in the thing anyway, he had what, like 550,000 btc at one point?

So it really comes down to a moral question of whether or not you think it's right to allow people to gamble their own money in ponzi schemes. Theymos and goat obviously think people should be free to gamble their own money. I've never seen any evidence of goat actually scamming anyone but there have been constant accusations over the years. I don't have all the information though, so if someone come up with some real evidence I'd like to see it, but no one ever has as far as I can tell. Just more of the same vague, incorrect accusations.

It's probably a case of no one is paid enough to care and no one wants to be the one who cooperates with the police.
2300  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: This guy accidentally sent 800 coins to an old Mt.Gox address - he needs help on: June 03, 2014, 06:17:57 PM
Thanks for the input everybody.  I've retained a lawyer in Tokyo, and am trying to get a hold of anybody at Mt. Gox simultaneously.

Good luck. I hope it works out.

Please keep us updated. I really think there is a good chance you can get the coins back.

Also if they do have the private key and are able to access that wallet it's a good sign for people who have money at gox. So I'm sure people will be interested to hear what happens there.
