Fictional Book -Imperium: A Novel of Ancient Rome by Robert Harris -I can say I know more about Cicero than I did when I started the book, but more important, the book transported me a different time and place. When I had to put the book down for the night, I always had a little jolt that I was actually sitting in Montgomery, Alabama. The descriptions of the political and legal manuevering by Cicero et al. were fascinating and not too terribly far afield from what occurs in those professions today. Now that I've finished the book, I find myself missing my new friends - and enemies - in Rome. Getting so immersed in a book is becoming increasingly rare in my experience.

I just had a quick look at the reviews of this on Amazon and it looks like it is pretty good. I like reading about ancient Rome but I don't think I've read a historical fiction novel based on that era. Looks like other books by this author are highly regarded as well.

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond was awesome and definitely worth checking out.
I genuinely enjoyed reading Guns, Germs and Steel. I enjoyed not because of the readability but the concepts and facts that I learned while reading. I would recommend this book to everyone who wants to further their knowledge in human prehistory with a link to the present day. Diamond used extensive examples to back up his argument throughout the novel and did well to acknowledge his shortcomings in the epilogue. Well written!

It's been a while since I read it, but I remember thinking that while it might be true that genetic differences aren't a actor in "Eurasian" success, cultural differences might have had a lot more to do with it than he theorises. That's not to say that the environmental/geographical factors like he outlines in the book weren't a huge factor.

Has anyone played The Forest?

No, is it any good?

If anyone has played both Rust and The Forest I'd be interested to know which one they think is better.
2224  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Thoughts on the security of this method? on: June 05, 2014, 11:04:13 AM
Sounds pretty secure, I just store mine in encrypted files and keep them in a few places. There's always a chance you make loose the USB drive and don't forget its not reccomended to use flash drives for long term storage. Pen drives degrade over time.... Apparently  Shocked

With this thought nothing would be stored on the USB drive. If it works the way I think it does all of the information I need to access the wallet is stored in the twelve word seed provided by Electrum. This way the only way I could lose the bitcoins here are through some sort of Linux vulnerability, an issue with Electrum, or something physically stealing my written down seed in real life.

Or maybe my ISP could do a man in the middle attack? Not that it's likely, but is that an issue as well? Since I'm downloading Electrum from a live internet connection. I guess thinking about it that way means that it could be my ISP, or Electrum's web server or anything inbetween...
2225  Other / Off-topic / Re: What video games do you play? on: June 05, 2014, 10:59:23 AM
I'm playing The Witcher at the moment.

It's an older game but I want to play through some older games and work my way to some newer ones.

So far I'm about halfway through the game and it's starting to pick up a bit. There are some lulls in the story, but overall it seems alright so far.

Anyone played this game? How about The Witcher 2?

Both games are pretty good. Not the best in the genre, but still fun.

Which games do you consider the best in the genre?

If you like RPGs, take a look at the Mass Effect trilogy (one of my favorites), Dragon Age Origins, and Fallout.

Yeah, Mass Effect trilogy and Dragon Age are both on my to do list.

Is it worth playing the old Fallouts or should I just skip to the more recent ones? What are they, Fallout 3 and New Vegas?

I remember I got Fallout 1, 2 and 3 from gog.com for free a while ago but I can't find them there to download on the site anymore. I probably missed my window to download them or something.
2226  Economy / Economics / Re: So whatever happened with Mt. Gox? on: June 05, 2014, 10:35:04 AM
According to willy report and other sources......it is highly likely that mt.gox either 1) suffered a greater setback through hack attempts than they let on, 2) willingly manipulated their own markets and orders with bots to steal customer funds 3) both.

I have been doing extensive research on these matters and reading up on several well investigated articles. Karpales, or whatever the fatass's name, is truly fucked.

When you say that Karpeles is fucked, what do you mean by that? Like do you think he's legally fucked? Like he'll be actually charged with something by law enforcement(Japanese?). Or do you mean he's fucked like he's just fucked up in the head?
2227  Economy / Economics / Re: Why the fuck do we still use cash? on: June 05, 2014, 10:27:04 AM
for daily transaction and small use, cash is still more simple and faster than bitcoin!

And cheaper.

Bitcoin usefulness lied on cross border trade where you can send to the merchant/seller fast without having to pay high currency conversion fee and higher than needed transaction fee.

yes that is true. Thanks for adding  Wink

Yeah, I use localbitcoins quite a bit and I'm getting hit on both ends with buying and selling coins at a markup.

In this regard bitcoin still has long way to go.

Maybe in the future when there's a lot more volume these spreads will come down and sellers margins will thin out. But I think we're still a long way away from that happening.
2228  Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2014-06-04] NASDAQ: Bitcoin ETF Inching Closer To Reality on: June 05, 2014, 10:21:48 AM
True. I would like to see this thing launch either right before the next big rally (which is unlikely) or right after the capitulation from that rally (likely). Just think if this thing launches right near the tail end of a mega rally pumping prices upwards of 10k only to crash shortly after. It could be catastrophic to a large number of people's finances and public perception of bitcoin, and I assume that the Winklevii and the SEC would take action to avoid such.

Unfortunately, not much can be done to prevent any such thing from occurring. Let's just hope that the correction will be a bit milder, and in the long term the investors will be in the green.  Grin

How would a large number of people's finances be affected if the price of a bitcoin goes up?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but all of the "crashes" have not been to below where the price was before the rally...

To my knowledge, no one has sold any bitcoins for less than $50 for over a year now...

The crashes seem to be more like corrections. On average bitcoin has definitely gained a lot. People just get carried away and buy at the same time and then freak out and sell most of what they bought off altogether at once.
2229  Economy / Gambling / Re: New french community website talking about HYIP on: June 05, 2014, 10:19:03 AM

Let's make profit now! Scam time is over!

Aren't HYIPs all inherently scams? Like all ponzi schemes? I don't care if people gamble their money in them.

I guess maybe if everyone knows what they're getting into it's not really a scam. But for the most part people running them are misleading people and attempting to scam them.

Non fiction: 1984. It accurately describes the world we will soon be living in.

Definitely one of the best books of all time. Such a good read. I've read it twice and I think I'll go and read it again soon.

2233  Other / Off-topic / Re: which dish you like to cook for yourself ? on: June 05, 2014, 07:41:52 AM
I like doing stir-fry because it's quick and healthy. I do know how to cook other stuff but I'm very lazy.
Yea, I think there are 2 reasons ppl don't cook for themselves.

1. They can't. I know someone who even do badly at cooking instant noodle. Can you imagine that? Yea, I can, I taste it, and its hardly edible. I dunno how she make it, but it seriously, waste of food to let her cook.

2. They lazy. As u said, even if we can cook, at least properly (instant noodle, rice, egg, you name it), we won't do it if we don't feel like doing it, and have someone do it instead.

Just beware with a girl/woman who says they can't cook. You MUST believe them. (experience is the best teacher after all...)

Haha, how is it possible to mess up instant noodles? It's just pouring powered in to the hot water.
2234  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What stops a Federal Reserve crypto scheme of their own? on: June 05, 2014, 07:34:13 AM
What features would this Fed coin have that would have people rushing to use it? If it is going to be centralized why even have a crypto coin?

It doesn't make any sense whatsoever for them to have a satoshi-style system. Being a centralized third-party issuer that controls access, they experience none of the inherent problems that a cryptocurrency was conceived to solve in the first place. A "Fedcoin" wouldn't be a cryptocurrency, it would be a database.

They could create a coin to 'hedge their bets' so to speak with the dollar. The advantages that 'Fedcoin' would have is being backed by the government, meaning the core developers would be paid by the government, instead of what we have with the bitcoin foundation. They could have hundreds of paid developers constantly iterating a superior software product. With the type of programmers they could attract they could take every advantage of altcoins like faster confirms and cpu mining. As well as have decentralised exchanges with the free flow of fiat to fedcoin(I don't know exactly how they would do this, but obviously the government controls fiat, so if they wanted to open this up they could).

There's lots of options for them if they chose to do something like this. I think if they wanted to establish a coin with clear advantages over bitcoin, they could. They have the resources.

Of course for a lot of people it would all be meaningless since their primary motivation for using bitcoin is to detach themselves from government control, but the majority of people aren't necessarily interested in that.

I don't think the Fed or the government would actually do a project like this. But they probably should. Even just as a reference type of thing to help propel the technology forward.

As I learn more about Sunlot Holdings, the certainty grows that they will get Gox. Coinlab put in a motion/objection against SunGox, but I'm not sure who else did.

Why do you think it's so certain that they will get Gox? Anything specific?
2236  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Runoff Poll: "ubit" vs "centoshi". Which should be the rival to "bit"? on: June 05, 2014, 07:06:16 AM
Anything other than microbitcoin is seriously misguided. Microbitcoin is the logical choice.

Centoshi is ridiculous and doesn't even make sense at all.

Bits is bad too. Should have simply been ubits.
2237  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: To improve Bitcoin on: June 05, 2014, 06:54:11 AM
Bitcoin unfortunately It is not the best means of exchange. I still find it easier to pay something using a credit card. You just swipe your credit/debit card into a machine and type a few digits (password). Bitcoin should be easier than that to be more widespread. Not everybody is tech-savvy.

What about creating a hardware wallet as small (preferably smaller than) a credit card without the need for a smartphone or computer? How difficult could it be?

To receive money you just need a QR code (could be printed on a card like versocards.com).
Unfortunately for PAYING is not the same. You can't go around putting your wallet private keys on other people's QR code scanners.

Is there any solution I'm not aware of?

If a bitcoin private key was encoded on to a smart card chip on a credit card style plastic card, what would happen if you lost the card? I guess that would mean anyone could go around signing transactions with your private key. People lose their (physical)wallets or have them stolen often enough that this would be a real concern.

I guess one solution would be to load only very small amounts you could afford to lose on the wallet that has the private key attached to the smart card. The pin system is interesting too, would you simply be able to set your own pin on the smart card after loading it with money? Is that possible. I'm guessing the way it works now is that your pin is verified by your credit card company. That obviously wouldn't work for bitcoin unless you were using a centralised service like circle or something similar.

It's good to see some positive talk from them regarding setting up a welcoming environment for innovative bitcoin companies. But I'm always skeptical that things like this will work out as well as some people intend them too. There's definitely going to be some resistance. And since like it says in the article "FCA has not yet made its official position on cryptocurrency clear" we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Well, it's not too surprising that the price is going up now that the shock of the Gox failure has worn off a bit. Sentiment is generally positive and there seem to be a good amount of new projects on the horizon. And I can't remember any major negative news stories to come out in the last little while. Slowly but surely bitcoin is seeping in the the public mind share.
2240  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Co-Owner of Bitcoin-Linked Sites Settles SEC Case on: June 05, 2014, 06:39:21 AM
http://abcnews.go.com/Business/wireStory/owner-bitcoin-linked-sites-settles-sec-case-23975428
By MARCY GORDON AP Business Writer

The co-owner of two bitcoin-related Websites is paying almost $51,000 to settle federal civil charges that he sold shares in the businesses without registering them as securities offerings.

The Securities and Exchange Commission on Tuesday announced the settlement with Erik Voorhees in connection with soliciting investors to buy shares in the two sites, SatoshiDICE and FeedZeBirds. The SEC said investors paid for the shares they bought with bitcoin, the online currency that allows people to buy goods and services, and exchange money across borders without involving banks or other third parties.

Voorhees, a prominent bitcoin proponent who co-founded a separate bitcoin company, made $15,843.98 in profit from the unregistered offerings, according to the SEC.

He neither acknowledged nor denied wrongdoing but agreed to refrain from future violations of securities laws.

Under the settlement, Voorhees is repaying the $15,843.98 in profits and paying a $35,000 penalty.

In a message to "fellow Bitcoiners" posted on the website Reddit, Voorhees said "With this matter resolved, I look forward to helping to build the bitcoin industry and the future of finance."

SatoshiDICE is a gambling site that takes bets and pays out winnings in bitcoins. The Satoshi name comes from Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious figure or group that created bitcoin in 2009. Voorhees and the other co-owners sold the site in July 2013, according to the SEC. FeedZeBirds pays Twitter users a fee in bitcoins in exchange for forwarding sponsored text messages.

Separately, the SEC issued an "investor alert" last month warning of the potential risks of investing in bitcoin and other virtual currencies. Investments involving bitcoin may have an increased risk of fraud, and the people behind fraudulent schemes may lure investors by touting bitcoin investment "opportunities" promising unrealistically high returns, the SEC said.

The agency said consumers should be wary of potential warning signs, such as guaranteed high returns, unsolicited offers and pressure to buy immediately.

How is it possible under any calculation to come up with a penalty of only $50,000 when we're talking about a site that was sold for millions. If not tens of millions...

It's pretty odd that the SEC would let him off so light. Does anyone have any idea why the SEC might fine such a low amount? Did they not do their research before proceeding with this?
