2762  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: EFF donations and the Bitcoin Faucet on: August 15, 2011, 02:53:04 AM
Give the money out to companies that are trading which accept Bitcoin as encouragement and reward for their efforts.
And some to set up new businesses.

+1 this is the only way Bitcoin survives
2763  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How Bitcoin will change the voting systems on: August 15, 2011, 01:40:14 AM
The distributed database that is Bitcoin will not only revolutionize money, but many other things with it.

There's already Namecoin, the distributed decentralized DNS alternative (which should probably be built on top of the current blockchain - more on that later).

I think one of the biggest opportunity the blockchain offers is to be able to witness a vote, live, and be able to independently check the results.
That's right:
  • no more trusting someone to count the votes;
  • no need for millions of dollars of logistic to prepare for "the big event";
  • no need to go physically to a little booth (no need to even be on the same continent);
  • faster results;
  • no need to have an ID;
  • possibility of a fallback vote (depending on bitcoin's contracts development);
  • Protected by the blockchain.

Here's a little example:
I am a chairman in Acme.
We have an important decision to make in the next 10 days that will influence the future of the company, say option A and option B.
The message is sent to all shareholders, asking them to choose one of them.
  • To select A, send 1 BTC to address 1thisisthefirstchoice,
  • to select B, send 1 BTC to adress 1thisisthesecondchoice.

By now you should see where this is going.
Everyone can check what is send to which address, count the total of BTC (sent from authorized addresses1) and yet still remain anonymous from every other shareholders.
The most transparent voting system - ever -.

This isn't perfect of course: there is still abuse possibilities for the vote organizer2. However, if we assume the organizer to be honest, everything else is secured by the network. This is really important: the same blockchain proof of work that protects our Bitcoins can simultaneously guaranty the voting process. Which is why, as told before, I think Namecoins (or an alternative) should be built on top of the Bitcoins blockchain: to obtain the same protection for almost no cost!

1. You don't necessary want a limited number of votes: the voting itself can be used to finance something. However, in the case of a company, you probably want to limit the possible voters to the shareholders. To do that, the company either ask for a public key for every action bought, or, if the actions are bought using bitcoins, the buying address is in itself the proof of ownership and can be used in any subsequent vote (with some mechanism to be able to sell the action).

2. In case of an unlimited number of vote, even the organizer can't trick the system.

Now this is a really good idea Smiley

I've used them (along with MtGox, Tradehill & ExchB), and have had a good experience with them so far.  The interface is nice, everything works as expected, API works great, support is responsive.

thanks this is very re-assuring!  I'll post my experience when done!
2771  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Camp BX ? on: August 10, 2011, 09:11:31 PM
Very reliable and easy to use, I like their graphs and their customer service is really responsive the only issue is low volume i think. Nice 2-auth feature for security Smiley

Thanks for letting me know!  Grin  I'm going with two exchanges just was trying to figure out which ones ... on my list was Mt. Gox & Tradehill now it looks like CampBx and Mt.Gox !

2775  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Here we go again ...now its Instawallet.org ? on: August 06, 2011, 04:37:34 AM
Never had any problems with Instawallet. Sometimes it shows more deposited than is real, but that gets corrected fairly quickly.

It did correct itself from 10 to 5 bitcoins pretty quickly Wink   I'm pretty sure I have the wrong wallet ( I hope ) for the 1 bitcoin that is missing. Its a quick service I do like just got panicked!
2776  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Here we go again ...now its Instawallet.org ? on: August 06, 2011, 04:13:05 AM
Retards why cant you just keep your own wallet. Is it really so hard?  All i see around here is a bunch of people crying about how someone stole my bitcoins.  well you deserve it. IMO

Hopefully no one is keeping thousands (or even hundreds) of bitcoins with them. Hopefully.

But browser-based wallets do let you access funds on the go. I don't feel that it's their existance that's the problem, but rather the usage (although I have my fingers crossed that there won't be the massive losses to an online service yet AGAIN.)

I couldn't agree more these are the last place you would want to put a lot of coins in . For small amounts and on the go they work fine. I'm sure I'll be able to go to my work computer on Monday and make sure I got the right wallet and stuff.
2777  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Here we go again ...now its Instawallet.org ? on: August 06, 2011, 04:05:05 AM
No problems on my end.

I keep multiple wallets with a few coins total in them. The account balances are accurate, and things went very smoothly with it today as I was moving funds around.

I also periodically empty, then later reload the wallets (just to make sure there are SOME bitcoins behind the screen!) Haven't had any problems with that.

The only issue I've had was when I had two browser screens open at once to two different wallets. The balances began fluctuating oddly. Problem went away after shutting down the browser and re-opening only one wallet at a time.

So, no problems here. Still worth keeping an eye on though.

(Btw... it might have made sense to check with the other possible person who could have accessed the wallets before posting.)

Yes, I was doing that at the time so that might be why.

The 2nd wallet was more concerning thats all ....  thanks for the feedback though I'm sure its a reliable service and I just messed up or something ....
2778  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Here we go again ...now its Instawallet.org ? on: August 06, 2011, 03:50:44 AM
anyone else experiencing problems with Instawallet ? I'm scared something very "MyBitcoin" is going on...

Today, I deposited 5 bitcoins to it and 10 showed up!  refreshed then 5 then tonight its down to 4 bitcoins (now I do have one person that might have taken that out I'll check with them). That was one wallet.

Then I deposited 1 bitcoin to another wallet today and its gone this evening ? this I know I'm the only that knows of it.

Anyone else?

edit: also, very slow to pull up .....

to the people saying its my fault I admit it I know.
2779  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Bitcoin Channel? on: August 06, 2011, 03:45:07 AM
No new vids from this channel http://www.youtube.com/user/BitcoinChannel in nearly a month yet prior to that he was posting up to 3 vids a day with very positive references to the future of Bitcoin price?

I notice he's been on the forums here recently however. He's also made no comments on his channel or replied to a PM I sent him a while ago. Odd  Huh

I was wondering about that also. Noticed alot of things just went silent around ( even atlas show? ) here maybe things will pick back up ! Smiley

2780  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mybitcoin.com Press Release #2 on: August 06, 2011, 03:44:03 AM
If the guy's story is true, I would vote that Bruce be a trusted third party (in spite of a gigantic potential for conflict of interest.)  Maybe I am particularly gullible, but I would bet several BTC that Bruce would err on the side of caution and even against his own personal interests to see that things were wrapped up as fairly as possible.

...but then I had no account at mybitcoin.com.

Bruce is affected as well
