What 5830's are you using? I can't seem to squeeze that much out of mine. I haven't set up MSI afterburner yet....

What 5830 do you have?  I have the Sapphire 5830 that was 110 on newegg a week ago, and I am getting 306Mhash/s out of mine, but I have gotten it as high as 315Mhash/s.  Don't want to push it though so I run it only at 306Mash/s 24/7.

Stock voltage
Using Sapphire Trixx software, overclocked to 1010mhz
memory underclocked to 300mhz
Running about 56c at full load.

Yes that's helping but at 1010/300 I'm getting about 250 mhs. I'll tweak it. Thx!!

I have the Sapphires. Let me go get the Trixx and try it out.

Also fairly new to mining... I found out about Bitcoin last Friday and started mining on Saturday.  Currently mining at a rate of about 3.3 GHash over at BTC Guild, and trying out 1bitc0inplz's bitp.it pool (although I've been having some troubles).

Currently running:
  • 3x 5050's @ 360 MHash
  • 8x 5830's @ 275 MHash

284  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: TO NEW MINERS: trust your feelings... on: June 12, 2011, 09:32:13 PM
"Trusting your gut" is actually the opposite of what you're recommending. "Trust your rational thought process" would be much better advice.

Make the best prediction you can based on the data you have, calculate risks for all probable eventualities. Act accordingly.

Anything else is foolish.

The world requires foolishness.

Defying the British Empire was foolish.

Flying the first airplane was foolish.

Flying into space was foolish....

Rational thought is very limiting. Without that fire in your belly, intuition, tapping into the infinite creativity of the universe and letting go of logic (which is predicting based on past events), life is not truly lived.

Risk must be taken to evolve. Otherwise you just live in fear and miss out on the birth of spontaneity.

edit: from an American perspective.

I wish I had been mining for a lot longer than I have, that's for sure!

I know what you mean. I first heard about BTC over a year ago and summarily dismissed it. And how here I am again. Oh well.....at least I'm here.
286  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How many newbies are mining? on: June 12, 2011, 08:11:24 PM
I started mining yesterday, the same day I discovered Bitcoin. Not sure how profitable it will be, but I thought it would be fun to try. Personally, I think the heyday of mining is long gone, but there still is money to be made from it. The people who really profited were those who mined in the early days and kept their Bitcoins.

No way. Imo, we are still near the beginning. What if BTC goes to $500 and you saved your BTC. What if you saved 1200 in a year?

If you had $600K in BTC would you feel the same way?
287  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How many newbies are mining? on: June 12, 2011, 08:06:06 PM
Been mining since Wednesday.  Grin

I love it. I've learned so much in so short a time. Decided to get in when it was at $8.50 so running to $30 was exciting. The fall means nothing to me really.

Being involved in this in what I feel is still near the very beginning is fascinating. It's like wildcatting for oil and gold!!!
288  Economy / Economics / Re: The price of BTC needs to come down on: June 12, 2011, 07:45:53 PM
You didn't address my points at all, it seems that you are assuming changes within a bitcoin-centric economy.  In order for people to get into bitcoins they need to actually buy bitcoins with dollars (or whatever).  People are not willing to pay $100 for "$1", even if it is a super magical internet dollar that is worth $100.  People are willing to pay $10 for 100 internet dollars.  This is what I mean by human psychology.  We need for people to be able to put $20 in and get 87 bitcoins to spend, rather than getting 0.87 bitcoins.  It makes a huge difference.

As for math, people really cannot compare 0.00006 and 0.0001.  Most people would tell you that the first number is bigger.  If you did a poll you would get maybe 10% saying that he second is bigger, 20% saying that the first is bigger, and 70% telling you that they don't know and that they HATE math.

Why are people willing to pay $40 for a $1 face value Silver Eagle? It's simply perception. BTC needs to be recognized as scarce and therein is the value. I don't percieve it as a 1:1 ratio. I see it as a 1:x value, where x=capital cost x time involved to mine, desirability, functionality, etc.
289  Economy / Economics / Re: R-R-R-REBOUND! (19.5USD/BTC) on: June 12, 2011, 07:39:19 PM
My post is a negative warning, with a positive message for Bitcoin Health.

Why can't the market be more "sane", going up so fast is not a good sign since a strong pull-back is more likely. Slow and steady is better for investors and Bitcoin. At this rate it could be back to $10.25 today's low in < 60 minutes.

Bitcoin is a young project and a small market. Volatility is spected, it should not be a surprise. Only with time and more acceptance will volatility go away.

Correct. Volatility will be with us for a looooooooooong time. I think all the coins will need to be mined and then maybe 5+ years after that will need to pass. It's all quite fascinating really.

I'm running a 9800M GTS, only getting about 14.8Mh/s with AGGRESSION=3 and WORKSIZE=64. Anyone have any suggestions for upping this?
Unfortunately, there is only one suggestion — buy a decent amd card, and preferably not a mobile one. https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison
Kinda locked into a solution with it being a laptop and all.. are there any effective ways to overclock?

Who are you addressing?
The original poster. I completely agree with your post, and I love the volatility! If you want something less crazy go buy CDs!

Ha! Right, Certificates of Depreciation.....!!

"God favors the bold"!!
292  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: capitulation. on: June 12, 2011, 05:28:11 PM
Jesus, no need to be so dramatic. The price fluctuates, it's a thinly traded market, calm down.

Who are you addressing?
293  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: TO NEW MINERS: trust your feelings... on: June 12, 2011, 05:26:17 PM
Good topic.  Trust your gut is important.  Don't stomach more than you can take.

The golden rule still applies.

"If the stock is making you losing sleep at night, sell it!"

I say give more to your stomach than it can take and use your head to compensate. This requires the use of many sticky notes!!!!   Tongue
294  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: capitulation. on: June 12, 2011, 04:35:20 PM
When someone with 150k can move the entire market to 1.5x or 2/3 the price if they wanted, I wouldn't take it so seriously... it could swing in any direction.

These swings happen like they do because the liquidity is so thin. As more bitcoins enter the market and other types of trade (options, etc) enter the fray the volatility should simmer down.

Professional traders will love this volatility in the meantime. Wait for the tactics these guys start using: disinformation, pump-n-dump, email campaigns.....

I'm still going to order an ATI Radeon HD5870 for mining, if the plan to win the money back in xx days/weeks/months fails I'll simply use it for BOINC or F@H or gaming basically.
If it does win the money back I think it would be fair to get another one, but I know my limits. Mining would probably cease to exist for most people if extreme elites competing amongst themselves were to come.

Given how long the possibilities of mining will last, if I were an extreme elite (assuming you meant "rich") I would just buy the bitcoin. I couldn't be bothered with hiring some IT people and overseeing the building of a rig network. Why bother?
296  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: capitulation. on: June 12, 2011, 05:21:22 AM
Bitcoin will go back up. If you look at the trade volume in dollars it is remarkably high even with the lower price. I do not think the trade volume will go down. Once the volatility simmers down a bit, I think the base price of bitcoins will increase. So just wait. This is my prediction... take it or leave it.

All that means is that miners are dumping bitcoins as soon as they mine them. Trade volume should be low if miners mined and then held which would indicate bullish sentiment. The question is whether or not miners are the smart money or merely mercenaries.

I think miners want their ROI first before they hold for the long term....

Take it! I agree. What goes straigth up. Reminescent of the '99 tech boom. Not the attitude on the way up, that was too fast. But all the sadness now that we've lost, oh, $20 in a couple days!! Understandable.

Dead cat bounce loometh!!!
298  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: capitulation. on: June 12, 2011, 04:31:02 AM
I am resolved to lose it all. You may destroy my net worth in nominal terms. Take it negative, even- but you won't get my bitcoins. You will not get my fucking bitcoins. I am going to will them to my daughter, even if they are only worth nine cents.  I may be an idiot, but I am not a pussy.  I don't know the ending, but I have a story to tell. I paid for it. I've aged ten years this weekend, and it's not even over. I will tell this story. Fuck it. I rolled the dice and took my chances. At least I took a shot.

I kinda feel the same way right now. But you have to expect this selling. NO ONE has seen it this high and the payout has to be hard to resist.

edit: looking back at the charts I guess it did hit over $30 way back when, and then it took a might crash there as well. One could deduce it wants to be at $30. Makes sense that it would hit the old high and correct.
299  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Slowness of micropayments (from Slush) on: June 12, 2011, 04:15:57 AM
Where would I see if I've downloaded all the old transactions?

I'm using the Mac Client, and at the bottom it says 0 Connections, 130070 Blocks, 0 Transactions

I'm not waiting on any transactions to go through, just want to be ready for when they do

*edit* In the unlikely event someone sees this, at some point between when I posted this, and about 30 minutes ago, I've lost the ability to post, make threads, and private message people... have no clue what happened, if I've been banned, or what, I'd assume if one were banned the forum would tell them so, but I've never actually been banned from a forum ever, so not sure how that works...

Go here.....

http://bitcoincharts.com/charts/

It should tell you how many blocks there are. That's what your total blocks should display. It's right next to the About tab to the right.
300  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Slowness of micropayments (from Slush) on: June 12, 2011, 02:32:24 AM
It can.. I've spent 2 days waiting.

If you are using the older bitcoin client, add a small transaction fee so the network will be more inclined to process the payment.

Is 26+ hours an acceptable time? Waiting on my first payment (5+) BTC. Not too concerned but not entirely UNconcerned....   Wink

It took me a minute to realize no blocks were being downloaded. I checked another machine and they didn't add up.....

Downloaded 3.22, deleted .dat files and all good now.
