281  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: DeFi - Lending Collateral on: January 23, 2023, 05:01:18 AM
Can anyone have a good explanation here of borrowing using collateral versus not borrowing and using the collateral instead for the exchange of other assets?
People borrow from DeFi lending pools because they don't want to sell their assets. There are several reasons why someone might choose to do this. Some examples:

  • Someone might need liquidity but doesn't want to sell their assets because they believe the value of the asset will increase in the future and they want to maintain their exposure to that asset.
  • Someone might want to create a leveraged position using margin. For example, if they believe that the price of ETH will increase, they can borrow USDC using their ETH as collateral and use that borrowed USDC to purchase more ETH, creating a leveraged long position on ETH.
  • This can also work in the opposite way, where someone uses USDC as collateral to borrow ETH and then sells the borrowed ETH, creating a leveraged short position on ETH.

This way they can create net short or long position on the asset with some leverage. Worth noting that this is a high-risk activity and should be done with caution, as leveraged positions can lead to significant losses if the market moves against you.
282  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Huge problem finding hardware wallet - do I only need it for 24 seedphrase? on: January 22, 2023, 03:13:20 PM
Hello!

Actually, I'm only interested in investing about 500 euros in Bitcoin every month and keeping it safe. That's why such a "receive-only" wallet would be enough for me, I don't really want to send anything at all - just the Bitcoin from the Binance savings plan to the cold wallet. Would like to keep the Bitcoin for many years and therefore have no need to send anything.

My question then goes to whether it is worthwhile to buy a hardware wallet at all and not just click on "Generate 24 words" at https://iancoleman.io/bip39/ and tadaaaa
From your use case (receive only) I think it makes more sense to generate it with iancoleman's tool. It would be a more cost-effective option than purchasing a hardware wallet and could be safer too as long as you keep your offline device secure.

PS: In my case (saving for old age), is it generally better to use a decentralized exchange like https://bisq.network instead of Binance?
It depends on your preference. If you're already using Binance and are comfortable with its KYC, then it would be more beneficial to stick with Binance as it typically has better exchange rates, liquidity, and lower spread compared to decentralized exchanges. However, if you value anonymity and privacy, then a decentralized exchange like Bisq might be a better fit for you.
283  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: usdt non custodial wallet on laptop similar to electrum suggestions pls on: January 22, 2023, 02:56:03 PM
Understand I think Binance is TRC right so is there any TRC USDT non custodial wallets like Electrum which can be run on the laptop?

Yes, Binance does support USDT on the TRON blockchain, as well as many other EVM-compatible chains. In this case, I would recommend using Metamask as your wallet. It is a non-custodial wallet.  It can add any EVM-compatible chains (Ethereum, TRON, Binance Smart Chain, etc.) and it is widely used, which makes it easy to find help in case of any problems. Note that Metamask's default chain is Ethereum, so if you want to use other blockchains such as TRON, you will have to manually change the chain in the wallet settings.
284  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: usdt non custodial wallet on laptop similar to electrum suggestions pls on: January 22, 2023, 02:22:14 PM
I'm not entirely sure if I understood your question correctly, but AFAIK, Binance does not accept USDT on the Omni Layer. This means that it doesn't matter which wallet you're using, you will not be able to deposit USDT on the Omni Layer to Binance.

Note that USDT is available on multiple blockchains, which include Bitcoin (Omni Layer), Ethereum, TRON, and Solana, to name a few. The USDT on one blockchain cannot be transferred to another blockchain. So, for example, if you have USDT on the Omni Layer, you will not be able to send it to an Ethereum wallet, such as Metamask. This is due to the multichain nature of USDT. Pay attention to which blockchain your USDT is on before trying to transfer it to a different wallet or exchange.
285  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Good news for APT? on: January 22, 2023, 09:59:31 AM
I couldn't find any significant news or announcements that could have caused the recent 70% pump. The only news I could find is that Binance added a few Aptos pairs to its Liquid Swap pools, which, while it is positive news, it's not something that would typically cause such a significant price increase. https://www.binance.com/en/support/announcement/binance-liquid-swap-adds-apt-btc-apt-usdt-hft-btc-hft-usdt-liquidity-pools-c322dd20aa1e4c82b7992ce2cc01cb3b

It's more likely that this price increase is a result of the overall market sentiment being bullish, and traders looking to speculate on the next promising coins.
286  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Looking for new exchange token to add to my wallet on: January 22, 2023, 04:12:05 AM
Between Chainge and Woo network which new exchange token is worth investing on right now? If you have other better options you can add, I know of LCX which is better and I've already invested in the project, what other good ones you have in mind

I've never heard of Chainge before. After checking out their website, I noticed that their daily trading volume is quite small, often not even reaching $500,000. Not interested in buying until they start generating more volume. However, I do think CHNG has a better tokenomics compared to WOO, with regular quarterly token burns. Also, WOO has stopped all burning mechanisms currently as they're revamping their tokenomics.

If you're looking for CEX token, I would recommend going with Binance Coin (BNB). Binance has been dominating the CEX space with notable growth. According to CoinDesk, its market share went up to 67% in December 2022 from 49% in January 2022.

For DEX token, I would definitely go for Mango ($MNGO). Yes, they were exploited in October, but all users were already made whole. They still have $27 million worth of USDC sitting in their treasury, which is more than MNGO's current market cap ($20 million). Additionally, the new v4 is already in alpha and they're also building a mobile Solana wallet, which is also in closed alpha. From my point of view, it seems like a no-brainer buy considering the $27 million USDC treasury they have.
287  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What happened with the UNI/USDT trading pair on Uniswap? on: January 21, 2023, 12:23:22 PM
Not 100% sure but it looks like an MEV bot (0x00..8987) doing a sandwich attack. The victim is transaction #2, that trx paid $63k/UNI and lost about $50 USDT. Here's how it works:

  • The attacker (0x00..8987) frontran trx#2 by buying nearly all UNI available in the UNI/USDT V2 pool (578.919). Now the pool has very little UNI and lots of USDT, essentially inflating the UNI price.
  • The victim (0x52..22c1) make a swap of 51 USDT for only 0.0312 UNI
  • The attacker backrun the transaction, i.e., selling all of their UNI bought from trx#1 in the same pool for 373,252 USDT

From this sandwich attack, the attacker gained 28 USDT and paid around $25 in ETH for gas, making only $3 net profit. Yeah these MEV bots are crazy.
288  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: 🕹️ Esports 🎮 Prediction & Discussion Thread on: January 21, 2023, 08:38:58 AM
The first match will be NaVi vs NiP, which should be a win for NaVi in my mind. On paper NaVi is the much stronger team even though they lost to NiP in the BLAST Premier Fall 2022. I think NaVi is motivated for 2023 and will show a strong performance after mixed results last year.

Both teams have different lineups compared to the last time they played each other eight weeks ago. NIP has -es3tag +headtr1ck, while NaVi has -sdy +npl. With these changes in mind, I think this match has the potential for an upset. Even though I would personally rooting for NaVi, the odds of 2.3 for NIP make it tempting to place a bet on them.

This will also be the first full BO3 match for npl with NaVi. I've been eagerly waiting for the continuation of the NaVi era since 2021, and I hope they can achieve that in 2023 with the addition of npl to their roster. It will be interesting to see how the game will turn out.

Evil Geniuses managed to beat Heroic in the first match which was very unexpected and also a close match between them, winning two maps 16-14. There is no chance for them to pull it of again against Vitality. Vitality is a strong team with ZywOo and should be taking that match easily.

I agree Vitality should have an easy win against EG in that game. Too bad the odd is so low, I'll skip that.
289  Local / Altcoins (Bahasa Indonesia) / Re: Genesis Secara Resmi Mengajukan Kebangkrutan on: January 21, 2023, 05:02:31 AM

Edit: Thanks @MAAManda udah dicek. Kedepannya tolong jangan copy-paste tulisan orang lain ya gan @puloweh555.
290  Other / Meta / Re: Binance pays Google Ads with the word "bitcointalk" on: January 20, 2023, 11:32:35 AM
Wouldn't be so sure that they are directly focussing on Bitcointalk users.

Agree, it doesn't seem like Binance is trying to specifically target Bitcointalk users with a Search campaign. If that were the case, the ad copy would likely mention Bitcointalk specifically. Also, I think advertising directly on the forum or through a signature campaign would be more effective Cheesy

Google Ads generally suggests using the broad match option for keywords matching, which is also the default setting. If the keyword "Bitcoin" is set to broad match, it will likely show the ads to users who search for "Bitcointalk".
291  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone know why FTT price started to rise just now? on: January 20, 2023, 04:47:26 AM
The bright side with FTX is that the reason it failed was an individual, so if that guy and his roommates are removed from any kind of decision-making job the exchange itself has no reason to not be economically viable.

Agree, I believe the exchange itself should've been massively profitable. It was the commingling of assets between FTX and Alameda, i.e., Alameda borrowing billions of FTX customers' funds that brought down the exchange.

FTX was one of the best exchanges in terms of trader experience. I like the ability to cross-margin between various assets and positions and the free instant withdrawal. I don't think restarting the exchange with new, legitimate management is a bad idea, especially if it could help the creditors/customers to get more of their money back.
292  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to keep account secure, is there 2-step verification for forum accounts? on: January 20, 2023, 02:10:43 AM
Yeah unfortunately the forum still does not have 2FA despite numerous requests. Implementing this feature in the current forum software (SMF) is apparently difficult and resource-intensive.

So, for now you can follow the basic security practice to protect your account from getting compromised, e.g., using a strong password, being cautious of phishing attempts, and ensuring the security of your device. Also, stake your Bitcoin address to prove ownership in the event that your account is hacked.

Are the exchanges more reputable than FTX was? Can they stop withdrawals, quotation, rig price etc.?

These exchanges are within the top 5 in terms of daily derivative volume and have operated longer than FTX did. Being a centralized exchange means they have full control of your coins and have the ability to stop withdrawals. Saying these exchanges would manipulate the order book is a bit of a stretch, highly unlikely but it's something a centralized exchange could do.

298  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How to profit from altcoins collapses? on: January 16, 2023, 02:37:33 PM
Yes, you can do so by creating a short position. Depending on the market availability of the altcoin, you can create a short position via perpetual contract, futures contract, or selling spot using margin, available in many centralized exchanges and DeFi platforms.

Could you give an example of a way to profit from $BNB collapse (assuming it follows $FTT fate), perhaps?

The easiest way would be to create a short position on BNB/USD perpetual market, which is available in many reputable exchanges like Bybit and OKX (just avoid Binance if you're expecting it to collapse). To get started, create an account on the exchange, complete the KYC, and deposit some collateral, usually in the form of USDC or USDT.

Once your account is set up, go to the BNB perps market and start trading. Determine your desired selling price and position size, and then click on the short/sell button. Shorting is essentially borrowing the token, selling it, and later buying it back at a lower price. The profit will come from the difference between the selling and buying price. For example, shorting 1 BNB at $300 and closing it at $290 will give you a $10 profit, minus trading fees.

It's worth noting that trading derivative contracts and margins can be complicated, so I would encourage you to familiarize yourself with the concept and risks before jumping in with real money. I think Binance actually has some of the best learning materials for this https://www.binance.com/en/support/faq/a-beginner-s-guide-to-futures-trading-website-360039304272

Yeah it's so irrational. I'm also confused about the fact that FTT still has any value and is actively traded. It's probably just a scam pump and people are so desperate to speculate on anything.

The $5 billion probably won't even be enough to cover all customers/creditors deposits, let alone FTX investors and FTT holders. Additionally, I don't believe FTT holders are entitled to anything from the bankruptcy process since it doesn't represent FTX equity.
