Price of Chilean farmland has just jumped 20%.
282  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 27, 2017, 10:36:46 AM
Monero hasn't taken off like ETH and Dash because traders are waiting to confirm Coinbase accepting monero.
At least that's what I'm thinking.....

Is Coinbase that big?

Yes, I live under a rock.

Hi, not sure ofc, but have been informed by a few people it's not going to happen. Fluffy helped her out with her blog post about Monero. Disclaimer at the bottom. Google is your friend. USA Is tough on regs - btc is hard enough, don't see XMR at all myself living here, just my opinion though. Thanks, good luck to all - Let's hope next Gui update is soon! Cheesy
A number of people - Coinbase engineers - helped her write/research that report. All of them were listed at the bottom of the report as helping her. FP wasn't listed. Either she forgot to thank him or he was assisting her in other matters - namely integration.

If Coinbase is going to offer Monero I suspect it will now be after the coming hard fork.
283  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 23, 2017, 05:17:48 PM
XMR/USD been hovering around the same price for a couple of days. ($21-$22). Not sure what is going to happen next, but news of people getting arrested for bitcoin blockchain investigations definitely would help XMR price, and it did last time. Zcash also doesn't seem to be any upgrades soon.

I'm betting on Coinbase adding Monero in the next couple of weeks.
284  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: March 18, 2017, 03:08:05 PM
What is the point of having Monero on coinbase?

Coinbase has some six million accounts - people who are happy having online wallets and trust them to be secure. Coinbase - much like they did/do with Ethereum - would actively market Monero to its existing customers. They would, in effect, do the marketing job for us. That could be huge.

 - Coinbase have publicly stated that they would add new currencies this year.
 - Fluffy was invited to give a presentation there earlier this year. By all accounts it was well received.
 - The Coinbase product manager recently published a beginner's guide to Monero, just as she did for Ethereum a few weeks ago. This was written in conjunction with Coinbase engineers. Coincidence? Possibly, but unlikely.
 - The Director of Engineering - Charlie Lee - at Coinbase has publicly stated he thinks Dash is a scam.

So if Coinbase are gong to add a new currency and if it's not Dash, what's left? Given the (admittedly few) pointers, I would suggest Monero is a good bet.

It is neither illegal to own, buy or sell Monero. If Coinbase have a couple more hurdles to jump selling Monero than they would otherwise have selling another currency, then so be it. It's not a big deal for them. My money is on Coinbase offering Monero in the not-too-distant future.

Edit: Just noticed that Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, tweeted the Guide to Monero referenced above. If that isn't a recommendation, what is?

Hey anyone know if/when we should expect the GUI to have added language support done, particularly CHINESE??

Aminorex posted a comment in a ZeroHedge article yesterday (plugging Monero to the folks over there) and made a good point: unless and until the GUI has chinese support I don't think we'll see any big pile-in to XMR from China.

Especially now with the PBOC looking to crack down on bitcoin, same as in the USA with the IRS sniffing around coinbase, it is looking more and more lately like actual real normal people are gonna NEED to start using Monero instead of -- or at least in addition to -- bitcoin.

IMHO this more than anything else will drive usage and price appreciation.

So, there's gonna be some time yet to accumulate "cheap moneroj" at least up to when the chinese version of the GUI is available... but is there any time frame, ETA, for *when* we can expect to see that?

P.S. If someone can do the work for this, I'd personally contribute to a FFS to get it done ASAP.  It's important.

As far as I can tell, support for other languages (including chinese) already exists in github. I suspect the reason that they have not been released yet is because they want to sort out all the existing bugs - large and small - in the GUI. Once the bugs are fixed then support for other languages will likely be released. It's hard enough trying to answer question/issues/queries regarding the beta GUI in English. Can you imagine trying to answer them in another language(s)?

On a late model Win7 machine took just over 24 hours. ...

Thanks for info... this MacBook Pro has a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 processor and 16 GB of 1600 MHz DDR3 memory: not sure how comparable that is to your 'late model' Win7 machine but with my blockchain download being only at about 25% done in similar 24 hours to yours being complete in same time... is that still "about right" OR maybe I have something still wrong that's slowing things down more than it's supposed to?

My PARTITIONING on this Mac *is* very "weird" however... could THAT have something to do with it?  Would a non-standard partition scheme seriously affect disk-write speed for a task like this, for some reason?

I can't think of anything else that may be "wrong" here... anyone have any other ideas?

Have you considered connecting to a remote node? That's what I did and it less than an hour to sync. You lose a little privacy - not much - but it's still secure.
287  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 22, 2016, 11:49:33 AM
looking at the boards again I notice ZEC is up 12% bucking the trend...bloody zcash, die I say.

Yeah, I simply don't get that. Just when I think I'm beginning to understand something about the markets, along comes Zcash. Why would anyone buy an asset that has done nothing except collapse in price since it appeared?

Another big bunch of merges on the official GUI. Only three outstanding currently:

289  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 05, 2016, 08:37:36 PM
Buying monero in december is a suicide. It just protracts the GUI mess to perpetuity which is a sign that a dumping whale waits for BTC to chill out.

Once bitcoin is curbed everythings back on track. Whale tells devs to hurry up their asses and pumps the hell outta it on the agreed bumping time. U better wait.

Better:

Buy Now - Sell with the whale (GUI release) - and buy cheeper later...

Priced in already. How many time should I repeat myself?

Six should do it.
290  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: December 04, 2016, 03:14:36 PM
Could you go on in PM pls... your very off-topic back and forth is tiring anyone else

You could have PM'd that request... instead of moaning about it in public (and presuming to speak for anyone else).

If you're tired... try taking a nap.

Okay, okay.  I'll delete my share of the shitposts resulting from volyova's "38% of Americans can't find England" trolling so smooth doesn't have to.

What's that?  You never complained about volyova going off-topic when he was bashing Americans?

Hmm, try the Ignore button if you find my pushing back against thinly disguised Trumpreich butthurt so wearisome.  Or go back to your Cloakcoin thread.  Wink

When you stray away from financial speculation and analysis you're like Trump's younger brother, only more boastful and brattish.
291  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 30, 2016, 11:59:20 PM
Price increase is due to being listed on Bitfinex?
Just got home from work to a 15% increase on Poloniex.

looks like it. imagine the weight of this news if bfx hadn't been hacked....

Which makes me wonder why Bitfinex is still around. Why would anyone continue trading on an exchange that has lost their members millions of dollars either through incompetence or fraud?

As much as I'd like to believe this is fantastic news for Monero, I'm somewhat skeptical about it.
292  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 23, 2016, 11:00:24 PM

Good to hear! =)
The short Payment ID has been around for a while, but the older is still supported. Unfortunately polo don't support the short one yet. But you could still use the integrated address generated by the GUI if you need to assign the transaction from polo to a payment ID in your wallet. More info: https://getmonero.org/knowledge-base/moneropedia/paymentid

Note: Apple has ended their support for os x 10.9. Even though my build works for you I can't promise you that the official build will.

Jaquee - Just a quick note to thank you for all the work you've done on the GUI. If you're ever around Boston I'll buy you a beer or three.
293  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 17, 2016, 04:26:41 PM
All this talk about the necessity and convenience for mass adoption is nonsense at this point in time.

Mass adoption in the literal sense is a long way out. The only group that matters at the moment are people who are already into crypto or curious enough to venture into it. They are few, and their hearts and conviction will have to be conquered.

It is them who will be the ambassadors for when larger adoption actually becomes a possibility. It is their choices which will be the choices of the masses. It is their competence which will help the rest of the world to ease into it.

The GUI is important, of course. However it is not important for the masses, but to help in carving out a sufficiently large group from this mess that makes up
crypto: Idealists, techies, economists, thieves, liars... and all the "normal" people stumbling into this space thinking WOW wtf is going on in here this looks cool!

Just as I did a few years ago.

A group (or market share for the cynics) large enough to gain the necessary inertia to rocket past the cesspool of failed money grabbing shiny shit projects that make up 95% 99% of this habitat.

FTFY.
294  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: November 13, 2016, 12:45:04 AM
Yes. This kind of hedging strategy in order to minimize risk actually makes a lot of sense.

Yes, there is a reason why I'm still in the game, despite losing 700,000+ XMR in hacks, probably the biggest loss ever.

Can you explain? I'm sure we'd all be very interested.

296  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [PRE-ANN] Monero Qt GUI, cross platform full XMR node. on: September 22, 2016, 09:13:33 PM
Look, if you are honestly what you say you are, then the best thing for you might be to take this whole conversation offline. You're not going to get anywhere attempting to browbeat FluffyPony and the rest of the Monero community in public.

Start over .Contact FP privately. Ask for his help. Release the source code to one of the devs and then get permission to raise money through the funding system. Be reasonable in your demands. Your first demand - 10000 xmr - was just bloody stupid and offensive. For reference, another developer a few days ago, proposed a GUI for 200 XMR. And he made all the right moves in terms of the way he approached the community.

Best of luck.

Fortunately, no one has reported any loss of funds, and it would require some special effort for most people to actually expose themselves to such exploitation.

https://getmonero.org/2016/09/21/a-statement-on-the-mwr-labs-disclosure.html

sigh, the shit that gets thrown around here these days...

This is actually also what crossed my mind when I read about the vulnerability: this can only happen when you have opened your wallet on the same computer you're at the same moment looking at, say, some porn.  That said, the activation of the RPC function should not be default while I think it is atm.

Simply not true - please check your facts:

"More importantly, since monero-wallet-cli does not enable RPC mode by default, there is nothing that is vulnerable in it unless the user actively enables a setting that allows for someone to remotely control the wallet."

https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/53ip1h/making_xmr_gui_i_want_to_start_fund_raising_guide/
Hello, I want to start Monero XMR GUI, i can do it in about 2-4 weeks based on https://github.com/cryptonotefoundation/cryptonotewallet. I want to receive 9700 XMR for it to buy monero.org domain and move my pool pool.monero.org there. Please tell me how can i start fund raising campaign here https://forum.getmonero.org/8/funding-required My goal is 9700XMR, but after fund raising will reach first 1000 XMR i will immediately start GUI development and after that moment i claim i can do it for 2-4 weeks.
P.S. I can`t start funding here https://forum.getmonero.org/8/funding-required by myself

You want, at current rates, around $100,000 for two to four weeks work? That's a bit steep, don't you think?

My dashing foreign friends who brave the English fora might benefit from some linguistic tips.

Those that believed in Monero at those most darkest times profited. They sold their houses eat only bread and water since they send all their salaries they got from 3 jobs where they worked so hard to Poloniex to buy Monero.  But with soem bad luck all might be fro nothing.

Some prefer to spell the word thus: "some".  This is a very vivid tale.  I somewhat resemble that remark.  Teacher gives you an "A" for bringing a tear to his eye.

You must be stupid not to have at least hundreds of thousands coins or more stored.

This would be a perfect use of the second-person plural, mostly unknown to the yankees, but beloved in some areas of the American Southeast:  "Y'all must be stupid not to have at least...."

Any deviations from the optimum can be corrected, by improving one's choices.

It's like attending school and getting investing tips! No wonder I spend too much time here.
