281  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Failed Transaction - how do I resend/fix? on: February 26, 2013, 11:47:55 AM
Please dump your private keys (in qt, go to the debug console and type dumpprivkeys [address]) and then import them to an alternate wallet like Blockchain.info My Wallet.

284  Economy / Securities / Re: ASICMINER: Entering the Future of ASIC Mining by Inventing It on: February 26, 2013, 11:35:45 AM
It'd be interesting to see if ASICMINER is able to get a special deal like half fees in exchange for pool exclusivity.

If we have 80% of the network that is not a good idea:)

Also that being said, to avoid centralization of the mining hardware could be set up in different locations to avoid a raid/51% attack.

Again that talk when we have 10%?

We are the only ASIC company with anything really going. BFL looks like 4 to 6 weeks (maybe) and avalon is not going to be much. bASIC is dead so yeah, I see 45% of the network pretty realistic and we should deal with that.

Deployment of Asicminer is currently under 2TH per week.... so will be 25 weeks before the full 50TH is deployed.... so 45% not really realistic imo
That's under the assumption that ASIC deployment is linear. I'm pretty sure that there will be significant additions in batches, and it'll be far less than 25 weeks for full deployment.

Very exciting to see how today plays out. I've got my coins on longing BTC.
286  Economy / Speculation / Re: Will the companies accepting bitcoin continue to pour in? on: February 26, 2013, 11:31:27 AM
For more merchants to accept bitcoin, the userbase must increase. There's really two things that can happen from now:

1) More and more vendors accept bitcoin, causing more users, and this is where bitcoin takes off.
2) Vendors realize that they are getting few sales through bitcoin, and after a while remove bitcoin.

2 is kinda like how OWS faded out.

If the value of Bitcoin goes up fewer will be spend. The Dollar value of the spend coins per month might increase but the number of Bitcoins circulated in commerce will go down!

On the other hand, a drop or levelling in price will increase spending.
Spending 1 BTC or 100 satoshi is irrelevant if they have the same buying power. For example, a GDP of 500 trillion doesn't mean anything if milk costs $50 a bottle.

Meanwhile on ASIC:

"There has been a delay on processing claims due to the huge number of claims ASIC has received following our unclaimed money campaign. We apologise for the delay and ask for your patience. We are working hard to clear the backlog."

288  Economy / Speculation / Re: Why does the price appear to be so stable lately? on: February 26, 2013, 11:16:57 AM
At a minimum I figured people whose investment in BTC is now valued proportionally greater than they are comfortable it being would have been selling here to rebalance their investment portfolio  (e.g., move some of the gains from bitcoins into cash or perhaps other assets,)

For years there's been a question of how long it would be until custom chips (ASICs) would be manufactured for Bitcoin mining. Over the past several months it's looked like it would finally happen but nobody was sure if we'd really see it. Now that it's finally come and the network hash rate has begun increasing, I think this additional math power securing the blockchain is materially reducing the risk in holding bitcoins.

Yes, it may have risen recently a bit too quickly but I figure it was KimDotCom on a big buying spree before his "huge" Bitcoin tweet but when hoarders now try to figure out how much to rebalance their portfolios, I'm sure ASICs and the rising stream of positive announcements are causing them to increase the allocation that they're comfortable with.

If you think about startups, employees have NO opportunity to rebalance their portfolios before they are vested or hit their lock date. I don't know how that works on average but in the high profile pops that's been a very good thing for those who would have sold cheap.

No, ASICs are not helping secure the market any more than all the current CPU and GPU miners are. The only thing it secures against is an attacker with a lot of money and computational resources, but the NSA is not going to redirect their systems to attack bitcoin when they'd be losing out on SIGINT.

Right now, we're seeing more vendors accepting bitcoin. Namecheap is in the implementation stages, and there's quite a few sites to come.
290  Economy / Gambling / Re: SatoshiDICE.com - The World's Most Popular Bitcoin Game on: February 26, 2013, 11:13:42 AM
The cool thing here is that hey! There exists a venture in Bitcoinland which can afford to lose a bet at such odds and it barely registers in the bottom line.

Boy we've grown.

It did temporary impact share prices through, but that's a good thing since I managed to pick some up at cheap prices :)
291  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Any trusted exchanges I can use? on: February 26, 2013, 10:06:10 AM
I am in the States, thanks for that post. Coinbase looks like a perfect match for me.

I think you have to link a bank account with Coinbase and allow them to transfer money from your bank account.

If you prefer to get your bitcoin with cash, I think BitFloor allows you to make cash deposits at any Bank of America branch.

If you are anywhere near Chicago, I can probably meet up with you and exchange cash for bitcoin as well.

It will be great when someone hacks coinbase and withdraws maximum dollars from everyones linked bank account.
Yes, it would totally be great. Do you have an agenda against coinbase?
292  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Kalyhost.com on: February 26, 2013, 10:04:11 AM
Yes, KalyHost is owned by Mt Gox. Try contacting support again. You'd probably get a response after posting it publicly through.
293  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need for a new way to give out bitcoin codes on: February 26, 2013, 10:02:41 AM
The thing is they hardly happen anyways, and the best way would be just asking users to post their addresses.

This tends to be the way it happens. Something like:

Quote
Bitcoin Giveaway: 0.01 BTC for posting your address and your Modest Mouse song title (limited to first five valid posts)

Works wonders and tends to filter out spam.

The quoted offer will be honored as a demonstration of the technique.
Positive Negative and 1AGsq8WcbC4NsES8AwTxkR8JGvNUUFBoUs

Thank you :)
294  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Need for a new way to give out bitcoin codes on: February 26, 2013, 09:02:03 AM
That is easy, build a system that displays them as an image, and only one at a time, so after it is redeemed move on to the next one. Also make it so you can't see the codes, so maybe have them encrypted server side.
What did you mean about "encrypted server side"? You cannot encrypt something and then have someone have access to it without the decryption key. You could obfuscate it with visual distortions through.

Just because you have solid colors doesn't mean it's like Windows 8 :)
297  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Margin trading platforms for bitcoin that are still operating? on: February 26, 2013, 08:17:28 AM
Thank you! Looks like there's quite a few potions here, I'd definitely give them a go.
298  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: some free MTGOX codes on: February 26, 2013, 08:16:15 AM
Looks like someone already scripted the redemption of these.  I tried a few random ones and they were all redeemed.
Yep, it looks like you haven't read the other replies in this post..

Someone probably made a simple script that redeems gox codes in bulk. Not hard and can be done straight from the console.
299  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Paper Wallet Design by me on: February 26, 2013, 08:12:48 AM
My thoughts:

Try not to use the bitcoin icon in this design - it doesn't fit. Remove the shine, and make it metro style. There's also quite a lot of empty space here.
300  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Multiple Addresses on Blockchain on: February 26, 2013, 08:10:42 AM
Hi,

Does blockchain has a "move" command? I need to send bitcoin to others from a specific "account" which may contain several bitcoin address.
You can use the Custom send function and specify the from address and to address. Blockchain.info also automatically recognizes it and tells you it's funds moved between wallets.
