2941  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 31, 2011, 07:33:21 PM
I agree with dree12.

Can anyone explain how merged mining would NOT drop the price down to 0?

The price won't drop to 0 if the coins are useful
So yes you're right, the proce will drop to 0
Bitcoin are also not "useful". If we added 10M bitcoin to the economy today, price WILL drop to zero.
2942  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 31, 2011, 06:44:49 PM
I'll be looking at ways to solve [51% attack] going forward, even though I think the current situation will resolve itself soon.

1. Merged mining.
2. Merged mining.
3. Alert user if nethash drops by c. 50%... oops! this happened already.  See #1.
4. Merged mining.
5. Tighten timestamp accuracy requirement.  Make miners run ntpd.
6. Design a new getwork/pool protocol that gives clients/members control of policy.
7. Alert user if a reorg with many hidden or old blocks occurs.

Pardon me if SC already does any of these.

All merged mining would do is skyrocket solidcoin difficulty above bitcoin difficulty, except taking a long, long time to do so. An increase of supply of that size will also drop sc price below ixcoin or even i0coin price! I do not support merged mining for any cryptocurrency - it simply doubles the chance of disaster.

Tweetcoin - Each Coin is worth Nothing.
People will pay for that just cause it's the first commodity without value Smiley.
2944  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Why would you mine with anything BUT a PPS pool? on: August 31, 2011, 01:39:25 AM
He means because bad luck will make the pool owners run out of money and shut down.
I personally think that smaller PPS pools are very dangerous to run and mine on, especially if they have a low or zero fee. A malicious individual with access to a competing proportional or the like pool can pull off a bankrupt-to-kill scheme by focusing all shares submitted onto a target PPS pool, but discarding all blocks submitted (this pool would itself by acting as a worker for the PPS pool, but passing the work onto its workers). The losses could be covered up by increasing share stales and marking all blocks as stales, and they would be limited at approximately the PPS pool's fees. The miners would simply feel a long block since the submitted blocks are being marked as stales, but the PPS pool would be paying almost twice as much they earn if the attacker had similar hashrate! Then the attacker withdraws at once all the funds of the PPS pool and resumes normal business, having managed to bankrupt a competing pool.
2945  Other / Meta / Re: Rename "Alternate cryptocurrencies" to "Official Solidcoin Forum" on: August 31, 2011, 01:16:49 AM
This will not be changed. You guys are lucky that we even have that forum, since it was that or we start deleting the posts.

Seriously, just move your discussions over to the SolidCoin forum.
I do think this thread was a joke, although your post might be sarcastic. Ah well, can't ever tell on these forums Roll Eyes.
2946  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: New Ixcoin fork -> I0coin on: August 31, 2011, 01:12:08 AM
Wouldn't merge mining push the exchange rate for that blockchain down to near zero? If I'm in a pool that is mining BTC and I0, I will keep my usual BTC then exchange any I0 to btc/usd.
IMO, merged mining is not a good idea. It would drive the I0Coin difficulty above the BTC difficulty if it weren't for shorter block times (the shorter block times do help, but have the same effect). If BTC difficulty were higher than I0Coin difficulty, then miners would profit by submitting pure-i0 blocks as well as i0-btc double-blocks. This will make solidcoin algo useless (except for slow rises, which is disputable since the rapid increase in hashing power would provide 0-security blocks and chains).
2947  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 31, 2011, 01:00:10 AM
CoinHunter, with all due respect, I think this post is perhaps a little overstated. Bitcoin has itself been very vulernable to security (see: trojans, theft, etc.), but the changes made in solidcoin I feel have not remedied this. The GUI settings are still in wallet.dat in solidcoin, aren't they? And solidcoin also does not yet have accessible wallet backup.

That is correct. Firstly I didn't expect quite the amount of success SolidCoin has had to this point, I thought I would have more time to fix such things. However it was also important to start testing my network protocol changes in a "Live environment". As can be seen with the data available, SolidCoin is the fastest and most reliable cryptocurrency network out there.

I am working on fixing this issue with the wallet.dat storing unneeded junk, and also automatically backing up wallets, along with multiwallet support for businesses and users.

Calling the bitcoin devs "trolls" is not appropriate. I suggest you renege on this post, and return to the attitude you had when you first released solidcoin: saying things like "Solidcoin will by next to Bitcoin as silver is to gold" instead of "Bitcoin is programmed by 12-year-old idiots and I am laughing at them".

Well I am laughing at the code more than "them", as a serious programmer that is the joy I get in life. Wink But if people want to actually DEFEND the code, especially when they are ignorant, then of course I will show them examples of the poorly written and designed code they seem to be supporting. At least I am trying to do something about it, whereas people like artforz just "agree" with me, do nothing to the code because they'd rather spend their time fleecing BTC from people supporting new coin chains.
Okay then, sorry for any misunderstanding. I do believe that solidcoin is an improvement over bitcoin most definitely, but that is the same thing with namecoin, yet people have not "fleeced" there from bitcoin.
2948  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANNOUNCE] SolidCoin - new and improved block chain. Secure from pools on: August 31, 2011, 12:14:59 AM
Yeah, unit tests, test suites, ... who needs that shit for a network handling $M of transactions daily? Just focus on adding features to the GUI! *facepalm*

If you had ever looked at the ugly state the Bitcoin code is in (and the inherent issues in it) you wouldn't be thinking it's fit enough to run millions of dollars worth of transactions a day. It's like someone turned in a highschool assignment and everyone else went "well that works" and off they went. I mean, which "designer" decided to start dumping GUI and other settings in wallet.dat ? Do they know there is a .conf file for this? Where is at least some attempt at backing up wallet.dat's which are worth tens of thousands? Is it really the mantra that if the power goes off and your wallet.dat was being written to that it's your fault for not running some sort of sophisticated backup system for it? Is it that hard to always have a backup file there (a single copy command) ? These type of things are standard for bulletproof applications that customers have to use, anyone with experience in the industry would see it in a second. This is only the tip of the iceberg.

I have to laugh at the trolls who can't program and don't understand how awful the situation is for BTC at the moment. Satoshi had some great ideas, but he wasn't a good programmer, and since he left barely anything has been done with the code. The client has stagnated, badly and nearly no one wants to touch it. So keep the false worship up and let's see how deep people like you can keep digging the Bitcoin hole.

2950  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: SolidCoins - Low Stales pool here! on: August 27, 2011, 01:27:54 AM
Hey there,
I've seen many people here complaining about ridiculous stale share rates. That is why I set up some quick solidcoin pool.

We Offer:
  • Regular Stale rate < 1.5%(mostly it will be even below 0.5 due to our WORKING Long Polling!)
  • Proportional Payout system. You can withdraw your cash after the block has matured(after 120 Confirms, you can do the payout yourself from the dashboard)
  • We operate at 5% fees. If you think that is high, just look at your stale share count, which is probably above 20% right now. With us you'll still earn more than with those stale shares!

Note: You can set your pool donation. minimum is 5% which is the fees. You can set this when registering or after registration in the settings page.

Note2: Please provide some valid mail address. We wont send you spam or something, but we'll send out some confirmation mail with a validation link. If you don't want to give us your email, that's just fine. Use an anonymous service like mailinator.com to register

What are you waiting for? Get rid of your stale shares!

2951  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Make some easy bitcoin at forbitcoin.com with this job on: August 27, 2011, 12:09:57 AM
What do you think is a good price for a forum signature. I'm not 100 yet either but would like to see more and higher quality gigs over at forbitcoin. I actually found this post from doing a forum search for forbitcoin.
I don't think this offer still applies.
2952  Economy / Speculation / Demand, fundamentals, or speculation on: August 26, 2011, 08:34:56 PM
I personally think there are more than three, but these three seem to be major. I'll list them and their effects, tending downwards or upwards here. Please make some corrections to this (I am not economically capable at all, so do not take these notes as anything serious).

Demand
Bitcoin advertises itself as a "supply and demand" currency. To obtain bitcoin, there are three major methods (ignoring gambling):
  • Provide a marketable good or service priced in bitcoin
  • Mine bitcoin
  • Purchace bitcoin with other currency
I would argue that purchacing bitcoin with other currency has only a positive influence on the price, providing goods or services tends it up somewhat, and mining them tends it up slightly. The last one might be most difficult to understand, as many people blame miners for causing the recent 20% decreases in a single week. However, my justification for that is somewhat psychological and somewhat logical: an additional miner can only bring difficulty up, causing mining profits to go down on average for everyone. These profits decreasing will stop some people from shorting bitcoin, and instead placing higher asks. Similar to the advice you might recieve for auctioning: "Set the minimum price higher, and you will get a higher offer".

Fundamentals
Bitcoin is a rapidly inflating currency if money supply is used to measure inflation. As of 2011-08-26, the annualized money supply growth rate is 44.5%! This meets a certain definition of hyperinflation if money supply is used to measure it. Unfortunately, CPI is not available for Bitcoin as there does not exist enough commodities priced in bitcoin. So, instead of meauring inflation, we are forced to measure supply. In contrast, this year the US money supply will increase by approximately 4%. So, fundamentals are a heavy negative weight onto bitcoins price, but until recently have not seemed to surpass the combination of demand and speculation.

Speculation
There is no doubt that bitcoin was previously, and likely still is, traded as a stock or higher-risk investment. The market is very shallow, and small trades can affect the price signifigantly. A large rally to 30 USD and above occured not too long ago, promptly crashing as investors tried not to risk their entire investment. This seems to affect price both upwards and downwards.

So, what do you all think?
2953  Economy / Speculation / Of course we are in a long slow slide! on: August 26, 2011, 07:31:56 PM

Long slow slide? Of course! That's what these charts say!

$8 just fell, and wasn't fake. Looks like thousands of BTC were thrown at it.

I like what you're doing but shall not jump to solidcoin. Only reason is that its currency sign is very similar to dollar sign.
I like the development of mexico but shall not jump to pesos. Only reason is that its currency sign looks the same as dollar sign.

(note: please do not take this post as more than a joke)
2956  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: What is your opinion on Solidcoin's block generation rate? on: August 26, 2011, 07:05:18 PM
Computing power is wasted every time a fork appears.
And what's the alleged advantage? Faster transactions?
Well, yes, but not as secure as 10 minutes blocks. With the same computing power, a 10min block will be twice as secure as a 5min block. You're not more protected against double spending with 2 5mins blocks than with one 10 min block.
Also, we don't want faster transactions, we want real time transactions, and that cannot happen within the block chain. Other means are needed, for example, the green addresses technique.
I don't think 5min blocks are a good idea.

There is absolutely no reason that longer block times would increase security though. If that was true, than you could argue that one 60 minute block is just as secure as 6 10 minute blocks. This is not the reason shorter block times are bad, as consider this example:

I have so much of the network hashing power that on a ten-minute block system, say Ten-coin, I have a 1% chance of producing a block in one minute. Therefore the amount of produced blocks in ten minutes on average is 0.1, and the rest of the network produces 0.9.

I switch over to a five-minute block system with equal hashing power. I now have approx. 2% chance of producing a block in one minute. Therefore the amount of produced blocks in five minutes on average is 0.1, and the rest of the network produces 0.9.

Since double-spends require more than one block in a row, and you have the same share of blocks in a five-minute system, the chance of more than one block in a row is the same or marginally increased.
2957  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoins can now only buy 100 solidcoins, how far will BTC fall against SC on: August 25, 2011, 09:33:22 PM
Doubled? Almost tripled! High: 0.01749900. Or should I say Low: 57.14612264. This is the biggest RALLYCRASH ever!

Edit: And as I said that, the price is going to crash to 0.013. Solidcoin has successfully completed the past 6 monthes of bitcoin in 3-4 days.

Volume: 167620.87080450 Shocked
This is 26% of all solidcoins mined so far, right? Wow. That's some kind of volume.

Edit: http://solidcoin.kicks-ass.org/graphs/graphs.html
This exchange rate rally has the bitcoin bubble speed of growth beaten. Doubled, nay tripled price in a day.
