Hi there, another of my basic MN security questions to the enlightened crowd:

Is there any real danger in someone getting their hands on the remote config file with these values?

rpcuser=reallylongusername
rpcpassword=veryveryverylongpw
masternodeprivkey=7..._Masternode_Private_Key

the 1,000 DRKs should be still safe in the local wallet, right? Just want to be sure Smiley

It's always a scam guys, ALWAYS. No one shares info which is worth a lot of money to tons of people, the markets are too thin and illiquid for many people to be able to profit from it.

Aaaah.. wanted to have a bit of fun  Wink

You guys should take a look at joining Fortress Crypto Investments. Lots of upcoming opportunities are known by us first. No pump & dumps, just solid picks to point your BTC towards. It's a nice change from the regular groups you see. The amount of support I get from them is fantastic too. You can use code "Zurg" when you join aswell.

Not impressed.. lot of generic shutterstock images and some claims that I would really like to see substantiated. Could you throw us a proof of your early DRK investments? Otherwise the claims of your past 10000% RoI look fairly weak.

Just another point, when are we going to get away from the "anonymous" angle? ElTito said that the PR wording was going to go more in the direction of "privacy", which I completely support.

I submit that the wording on that site should be changed from "anonymous" currency to "private" currency...I am tweeting that angle every chance I get, it resonates with more people:

CURRENT WORDING:

What is Darkcoin? Darkcoin (DRK) is an anonymous digital currency based on the Bitcoin software. It allows you to stay anonymous while you make transactions. It is like using cash, but digitally.

PROPOSED:

What is Darkcoin?  Darkcoin (DRK) is a digital private currency that is completely open-sourced. It allows your finances to stay private as you make transactions. It is like using cash, but digitally.

I also eliminate references to BTC, we should stand on our own.

IMHO

Much better. I would smuggle in the sentence that it is the only coin that offers anonymity (or highest level of privacy if needs to be) and passed an independent review by an industry expert. This is the selling stuff.

Yeah, I know, someone told me shorter is better...The WHOLE Darkcoin system will be COMPLETELY open-sourced tomorrow, but this is more attention grabbing.

Yep, also prefer the shorter simpler message Smiley

It is hard to please everybody... Tongue  Tongue  Tongue

True however the content is far from being a decent sales pitch for the coin - we can agree on that one Smiley
307  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] Darkcoin | First Anonymous Coin | Inventor of X11, DGW and Darksend | Instant TX on: September 28, 2014, 08:03:06 AM
Sorry guys - but new site doesn’t look like like promo site of «first and only already working, easy and ready to use anonymous coin» for ordinary people.
It looks like techno-blog for crypto-geeks testing prototype who already know everything about Darkcoin.

So this new site is great for active adepts of Darkcoin - OK. But to attract new people - IMO we need smth like https://bitcoin.org site.

May be we need to have bouth 2 sites:
1. Promosite to attract users-investors with professional design, usability, promo articles, video, ... with simple interface (strong selling site). Click to understand -> Click to download -> Click to buy. No distracting info.
2. Techno-blog with all the information for adepts that already use Darkcoin and intrested in RS, mining pools, updates and all such stuff ...

+1
Like the "First and only fully-functional and easy-to-use anonymous coin."

The first thing newbies see now is some Mandatory update that sounds like the coin was broken & needed an urgent fix. Not the best key selling message.

Also - the first line of definition people may still read is soooo boring: Darkcoin (DRK) is an anonymous digital currency based on the Bitcoin software. - To me it sounds very much like just another BTC clone.

Strong competition for DRK these days...

?? What are you talking about? CLK? MNR? BC? XC? BTC? USD?

Don't see any other decent anon alt out there
309  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Vote for the best POD/CoinSource evaluted coin! on: September 28, 2014, 05:59:49 AM
So let me get this straight.

Darkcoin's developer:

* Invented X11, which is used by countless coins now.
* Invented DWG, difficulty re-targeting which is used by countless coins now
* Re-built CoinJoin so it works
* Had his code audited by Kristov Atlas and has passed the review, so now the anon layer is being open sourced on Monday.
* Created an anoncoin coin which has a higher market cap than all the other anon coins
* Figured out a way to make transaction confirmation instant (which will make keeping coins on exchanges a thing of the past)

Yet, Darkcoin doesn't make the list?

I'll just inform the Darkcoin developer that there is no proof of his existence and Darkcoin must have just magically appeared from eBay or somewhere.

Yep, the list is ridiculous, missing on the clear no.1 anon

The intro video should explain advantage of DRK compared to BTC (stop comparing against $ - our target market knows BTC)
BUMP Agree, there are many FIAT not only $, what we want is to attrack BTC people to use DRK

I disagree. If you have a rifle, you hunt big game, not cockroaches.

Still think we should focus at convincing BTC adopters to get into DRK rather than aiming at average Joes - that way we do not have to focus on explaining crypto basics that bore everyone to death.

In the longterm you are obviously right

It is a good idea to list the exchanges on darkcoin.io, HOWEVER:

http://www.darkcoin.io/using-darkcoin/buy-darkcoin/exchanges/

It is nonsense sorting the exchanges alphabetically. Top 2 places have to be reserved for
Mintpal and Cryptsy as this is where 80% of the coin is traded. Possibly Bitfinex or some other exchange based on total value of the latest trade - http://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/darkcoin/#markets

There is no reason to list exchanges that have 0 trade in weeks - it just upsets the prospective investors. On the other hand, if one goes to let's say Mintpal and sees that DRK is no. 1 or 2 and the market is liquid, they are much more likely to invest!

Agreed. The exchanges should be sorted based on volume (that means a script should read out the APIs of all mentioned exchanges regularly, e.g. once per day).
Like coinmarketcap does on their darkcoin overwiew site.... (hm, coinmarketcap is down for me ATM)

Yes - dynamic sorting would be ideal and we should go for it. However if that is too time consuming for the moment, we should just manually move mintpal & cryptsy above  and separate these from the rest of the exchanges as these have been top 2 exchanges for months now.

That would literally take 5 minutes of work for everyone who has an FTP access to the website  Smiley

Doesn't take much longer to make the API calls with PHP, then process the data and use it to sort the table.

Mintpal:
https://api.mintpal.com/v1/market/stats/DRK/BTC
gives back a JSON object and you simply have to read out the 24hvol variable. It gives you back the volume in BTC.

Cryptsy:
http://pubapi.cryptsy.com/api.php?method=singlemarketdata&marketid=155
DRK Market is nr.155
Read the variable "volume". It's in amount of DRK, so you have to multiply it with the variable "lasttradeprice" to get the volume in BTC.

etc for the rest of the exchanges.

Fair point.
Would still do the lazy instant static interim solution and then hope someone will work on the sorted list with market volumes  Grin

lol and the german accent video is on the front page ...
why  Huh

a) Its vertoe
b) highest respect for the man
c) community work, not payed
d) definitely need a multi-language, "pro", version, without "weird and creepy" linux stuff for the masses

How do we make that happen ?
What do you need ?

Fully agree - the Vertoe's video was great for testers and it is not aimed at general audience.
With the Open Source and media campaign there will be lot of newbies coming to the website and the tech stuff will discourage them.

The intro video should explain advantage of DRK compared to BTC (stop comparing against $ - our target market knows BTC so no more explanation of 24/7 low-cost decentralised payments), mention the fact that DRK is the only audited anonymous crypto and how to buy it on mintpal / cryptsy.

It is investment we need so the material has to reflect it.
315  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][DRK] Darkcoin | First Anonymous Coin | Inventor of X11, DGW and Darksend | Instant TX on: September 27, 2014, 11:09:37 AM

The press release will take care of saying what darkcoin is and what it does. Mainstream media will create distortions or someone else will. It's not something that we should fear. We can't control every outlet and who brings what news. If someone wants to know what darkcoin really is, they will do the research and make up their own minds.

What is needed is a clear message:
1) Darkcoin is the only crypto that succesfully implemented anonymous transactions, which was confirmed by the recent update
2) The code is going to be open sourced. This provides the coin with the element it was missing - transparency and opens the doors for its adoption

Also we should mention that the coin is mostly traded on mintpal and cryptsy, where it can be bought for both BTC and USD.

1) Not true, Cryptonote coins already do that at blockchain level
2) Cryptonote coins are already open-source

you need better arguments, there is a lot of competition, drk is not on a vacuum anymore

good luck senpai

1) Have they passed scrutiny of independent audit? Cloak tried and failed and that would be replicated by CN
2) I was talking about removal of drawback rather than extra feature

I'm a sys/net admin with 15+ years of experience and I can tell you that the biggest threat is YOURSELF! Just make a typo as root and kiss your system goodbye! Happened to me twice, I have learned the hard way... You don't have to  Wink

Some examples (do not try this on your masternode):
rm -rf .*
mv / /dev/null
find -type f -mtime +30 -exec mv {} /dev/null \;
whatever > /dev/sda

Play it safe, log in as a regular user and use sudo!  Smiley

Smiley will google these for some easy good night read, thanks, appreciated Smiley

Another of my stupid questions:
All manuals on masternodes are saying how ports should be closed and how root account should not be used.. Personally I use root login with 15 chars long password and cold wallet set-up and did not bother closing the ports - can ANYTHING really happen to me?
My guess is 99.9% not but still would like to get a second opinion. Everyone is saying how root should not be used but I do not see the danger with the cold wallet & decent pw.

My dear drobek, we were all once newbies at everything, and will always be newbies at somethings. Once you understand something, you can often profit by going against the stream, but in an area where you are a newbie, statements like this are dangerous if not foolhardy: "Everyone is saying how root should not be used but I do not see the danger with the cold wallet & decent pw. "

Your cold wallet may be safe, but if your machine is compromised you may be subject to all sorts of future grief... not to mention the possible eventual loss of any funds/information that pass through or are produced by it. IMHO.

Thank you for your reply strix. While the statement indeed sounds naive I still wonder how anyone can guess/force a decent password. Have talked to a few people who were hacked and almost all of them had either simple pw or pw they reused on multiple occasions. At this point I think that a combo of decent PW and frequent apt-get update/upgrade may be adequate for cold wallet set up but still preferred to get a second opinion to running everything as a root.

Just out of curiosity, why did you opt to use root? It would have taken maybe 10 seconds to add a new user and give it a password, log out of root, log in to your new non-root user, and install. Also, not sure who you are using for a VPS, but there are iptables that you can literally copy and paste for both AWS and Vultr.

Lazyiness and convenience Smiley I keep forgetting using sudo prefix commands and when I do the long password takes forever to type Smiley
Don't forget - we loosers take hours to get the MN working so every extra step hurts.
