3061  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Slashdot: Google Engineer Releases Open Source Bitcoin Client on: March 23, 2011, 09:52:00 PM
couldn't google technically buy all the coins, usurp the marketplace, declare it whatever value they want and basically turn it into a paypal clone? noo

Even if they did, they wouldn't get control over the network, just the price temporarily. You have to remember as of now there's almost 3/4 more of BitCoins still to be issued.
3062  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Pay a few BitCoins, get access to my main email folder on: March 23, 2011, 09:40:10 PM
Here’s a use case: The client creates a special kind of transaction that you could attach to the email. This transaction transfers a certain amount of Bitcoin from your public key to the recipients public key. This transaction is not published and therefore not yet final. Furthermore, it has a time to live, say 48 hours.

At the receiver the software checks the validity of the transaction. If it is valid and the money is there in Bitcoin it presents the email to you. If you like the email you do nothing and the transaction expires. No funds transfer. After the transaction expires the sending wallet deletes its copy of the transaction and credits the sender with the coin.

If you don’t like the email you click the button and the coin is collected. (The transaction is published and bundled into the next Bitcoin block.) The sending wallet sees the transaction and makes the deduction of funds from the wallet permanent.

This is like a check in the mail. It’s safe because only the recipient public key can collect it and it can’t be lost because of the expiration date.

Nice! Perfect logic for my idea. I like it.
3063  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Pay a few BitCoins, get access to my main email folder on: March 23, 2011, 09:38:30 PM
I can't help but think if you're going to go to all this trouble, you may as well just require all incoming e-mail to be PGP-signed and only accept mail from people whose keys you know. Any mail signed with a key you don't know would go into a sorting folder you would periodically check for legit mails, adding the associated keys to your list of known keys.

Both methods have the problem that you have to convince people who send you mail to go to the trouble of using them.

The difference is that I financially benefit if someone decides to spend money on my prime email reading time. Remember it's my choice to refund and I don't have to do it if I think I want my reading time back. That's the main difference between using BitCoins and any other filter method.
3064  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Pay a few BitCoins, get access to my main email folder and my prime reading time on: March 23, 2011, 07:40:57 PM
I know there have been a few topics on using BitCoins to avoid spam and other meaningless and useless emails already but I just couldn't resists but make a new one just for my idea.

And it goes like this:

I want to be able to have a folder for receiving email that will charge a few BitCoins, maybe as few as 0.02BTC or eventually even less, to gain access to it. If you send me an email you get the option of either attaching those few BitCoins to it and your mail will receive special access and treatment by me or you can choose to not attach anything and your mail will get placed with the rest of the emails I usually receive but don't really pay attention to.

Also if I decide that the content was worth my time I spent reading I can just click a button and I refund you the price of my special attention. If I reply to you this happens automatically as I also want for my returning mail to land in your special folder.

Now I have no clue how to implement this service but I sure would use it. What do you think?

EDIT: Feasible implementation posted by ffe

3066  Economy / Economics / Re: How much is one bitcoin worth? on: March 23, 2011, 03:07:07 PM
Simply put it's worth exactly as much as anyone at any given moment is willing to give you for.

I think your best bet to find that out is to first visit: http://bitcoincharts.com/markets/
3067  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Satoshi really Steve Gibson from qrc.com? [dispute this gossip] on: March 23, 2011, 01:18:28 PM
you should link it from that other board.

I'd like to get a few more responses disputing it first and then if that guy persists I'll definitely link it there.

I know I know I just though I should make a post so if someone who sees his comments over there does a search on this forum can find it and also read the opinions of people of this community.

Please dispute this gossip that someone is eagerly spreading on dailypaul.com where I made a post about BitCoins:

My heart almost jumped out of my chest.

LISTEN

Steve Gibson of grc.com is a snake oil salesmen.

Gibson is an IT guru and exceptional programmer who got into spyware when the getting was good.

After having a fallout with real networks he teamed up with lavasoft and zonelabs to do what he's really good at:

Marketing.

This guy is familiar to many of us who hung out in certain internet circles 10 years ago.

He is the front man for an operation that both created spyware long before it became a household term, whilst making money by providing tools that could remove it. His coherts created an extremely successful firewall that spied on the consumer, and spent a great deal of energy harassing anyone who took notice.

I can tell with 100% certainty that this guy is the fox looking over the hen house type who's agenda has only been to spy on consumers and making money doing it.

The fact that he's still in the game and now marketing this
bitcoin thing speaks VOLUMES.

If anyone here has a strong computer background, I'd be happy to talk to you about his involvement with spyware and raw socket zombie bots, to name a few.

The reason he is so extremely knowledgeable on the subject is not just because he is obviously getting paid to market it. it's because he probably help program it in the first place.

The fact that google has signed on to this is even more bizarre.

Listen people. This is a real problem. This guy has some friends in some high places.

You can expect Ziff Davis Publishing magazines (such as PC World, et al) to ALL ENDORSE THIS PRODUCT in their magazines if they haven't already. That is because it's the same inner circle of people that helped push his snake oil a decade ago.

This BitCoins needs to be investigated.

Because if you knew what I knew about Gibson, then it would seriously redefine your hairline.

Of course there's nothing wrong with your logic except that it's irrelevant since we're almost past it and doesn't contribute to the topic discussed at all.

What does Quantum Computing mean for Bitcoin?

Nothing, at least until Quantum Computing transcends from realm of myth to reality.

Did you read my post??

Quantum computing device hints at powerful future

One of the most complex efforts toward a quantum computer has been shown off at the American Physical Society meeting in Dallas in the US.

I disagree. I think the speed is perfect for such a basic promo which should only serve as an inspiration for people to read more about it and research more on their own.

I am a fluent english speaker, and i had to watch it like 3 times to catch everything, even though i am a programmer and I understand the concept of bitcoin.

So believe me, when I am saying that it is much too fast.

And if it is too fast for me, imagine how fast will it be for "slower" people.

ShadowOfHarbringer you are missing the point of my post entirely. The promo is not suppose to answer all the question and have the viewer grasp all the concepts. It's suppose to present BitCoins in a concise manner and lure them in to research more on their own. And for that purpose it's perfect.

This is for the mybitcoin account. Feel free to donate even more bitcoin into it.

Also, do not donate to the address listed at the beginning of the thread as a precaution. The address I listed in this post definitely belong to the mybitcoin escrow account.

Wouldn't it be smart to make a new thread about this specific video and website?

Awesome promo. I've already shared in on Facebook, and on 4 other forums that I know have people who will be very interested.

Sorry for not coming on the forums right after the meetup - I came back to a pile of work waiting for me. The reception of the movie at the meetup was very positive. We had one last minute change to the credits, but the video should go up today.

Can't wait.

As long as I have to live in this capitalist system, which I dislike, I want Bitcoin to be my primary currency! Smiley

You mean corporatist fascists system, right? I mean we haven't had capitalism for at least the last 100years anywhere in the entire world.

Nope, you pretty much need to give out the whole PIN and trust the ESCROW not to screw you.

BTW if some of you are wondering why someone would want to sell their BTC for a paysafecard, here are a few examples where you can use one as money:

Prepaid mastercard Yuna: https://www.yunacard.com/at/home/
Secure electronic financial transactions service ECash Direct: http://www.ecashdirect.net/about.html
Most popular online poker platform: http://www.pokerstars.com/

to name just a few of the really handy ones.
