3141  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Premier League Prediction Thread 2020/2021 on: May 18, 2021, 09:08:30 PM
With the goal scored by Kelechi Iheanacho (who has been phenomenal in recent times by the way) Manchester city's stopper Ederson Monero has won the season's golden glove for the second year running with 18 clean, Mendy is behind by one and has has a great debut season.

The odds are stacked up against Leicester, but I'm backing them to make it into this year's champions league tournament.

I've had someone tell me that isn't as much of a concern if you are just "hodling" and that if I can move my currency around, I AM in control...
A centralized platform holds your private keys and approves all your transactions, this means they can restrict you from spending your funds should they wish to, that is not really control.

I was concerned about it being open source, but I researched that an open source code platform could actually be safer than a closed source one...
Users of Bitcoin (and other cryptocurrencies are attracted to freedom and decentralization, this makes open source platforms the preferred alternative.
3143  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: buying goods on: May 18, 2021, 05:45:37 PM
This forum has a dedicated section for buying and selling goods with Bitcoin - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=51.0, also check out the child boards. (Disclaimer - Scams are not moderated, use a trusted escrow)

To buy goods, you would need some bitcoins first, you can buy on exchanges or peer to peer platforms, and then visit a reputable website where Bitcoin is accepted for payments
3144  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why crypto (bitcoin) is better than traditional money? on: May 18, 2021, 05:39:09 PM
Bitcoin is technologically beneficial, however, in terms of security when losing both of them where fiat is more reliable. We can consult the bank.
Majority of scams happen through fiat and the banks do nothing to prevent them or restore the amounts stolen. Centralization is a quality that favours the authorities at the detriment of the public.

On serving different purposes, Fiat has a far reaching adoption rate and is readily available and easily spent through arious means; cash, digital, cards, tokens, mobile transfers, etc. This makes it more efficient than Bitcoin for daily expenses. I expect Bitcoin to grow in scalability in the coming years, but probably not to the level of fiat.

Show me the proof that the governement (which one btw ?) want to do something wrong to someone innocent ? prove me it.
I find it difficult to see this as a serious question. With a simple search you can find out lots of information about governments abusing power and control, blocking internet connection to its people so the world does not know what's happening.
There are so many recorded cases of governments doing something wrong to someone innocent, but I'll direct you to one related to my country, look up the case of Ken Saro Wiwa.

The bottom line is we do not live a utopian society, and everyone is liable to err, with this, no one should be giving full power or control as it can be abused.
3146  Economy / Economics / Re: MicroStrategy Buys $250M in Bitcoin, Calling the Crypto ‘Superior to Cash’ on: May 18, 2021, 12:31:01 PM
*Updating for the OP

Microstrategy buys tranche number 13 which takes their total holdings to over 92k bitcoins;
"MicroStrategy has purchased an additional 229 bitcoins for $10.0 million in cash at an average price of ~$43,663 per #bitcoin.
As of 5/18/2021, we #hodl ~92,079 bitcoins acquired for ~$2.251 billion at an average price of ~24,450 per bitcoin."

3147  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbies beware of such tricks on: May 18, 2021, 10:45:54 AM
This is the most typical scam playbook; promise of huge returns by simply dropping a small deposit without doing any work whatsoever. The main cause of this is greed and not newbie inexperience, otherwise no one would expect to get back money in a few hours after giving it to a complete stranger you met on telegram.

This is a scam on telegram and not directly related to Bitcoin.
3148  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: KYC - IDENTITY VERIFICATION or IDENTITY THEFT on: May 17, 2021, 02:14:51 PM
there are some danger and we need to improve the internet security and surveillance.
Who decides who has the duty of protecting the public by having personal information? If the government and security protects us from scammers, who protects us from the government?
This narrative of keeping the internet peace should be dropped as it's only an excuse that is used by the authorities to maintain control.

(it's not that hard to steal people ID cards and documents without internet, it's very easy... no need to hack a database,  it's more easier to break your door or pockets than most servers over internet)
If it's not that hard to steal personal details, how efficient is the KYC process, it doesn't stop crime or scams?
3149  Economy / Speculation / Re: Sweet sweet cry baby tears! Bitcoins long overdue bear market has begun! on: May 17, 2021, 05:47:21 AM
What if the tides were turned around and BTC reached $10k - $20k by the end of the year? Then what?
Then nothing, it's ironic that after 12 years of Bitcoin's existence and the quite explosive increase in price and adoption, people still come to focus in when the price dips or slips into a bear market. At the beginning of the 4th quarter of last year Bitcoin was less than $10k and it is currently above $40k, if you hold some you can use this opportunity to buy some more at a discount, if you do not hold some, you shouldn't take interest in the market movements as the holders understand its risk and potential (except of course you wish to buy).

If you want some good giggle... go check out the people crying on Twatter and Reddit.
There is always panic anytime the price dips, especially by more than 10-20%, this does not indicate a bear market, and if it does a lot of holders are not bothered.
3150  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: How can I find a project to join, Designer here on: May 16, 2021, 07:29:11 PM
Try posting an announcement thread in the SERVICE section, you can equally search around there for projects which are in need of a designer.

Note that scams are unmoderated by the forum. If you are unsure of how to deal with a customer or partner, be as public as possible so the community can call out any red flags
3151  Other / Meta / Re: Should all scam busting techniques be made public? on: May 16, 2021, 06:00:58 AM
such account should be kicked off from the forum after gone through some queries and discovered the user is guilty of the acts.
Scams are unmoderated and would not get anyone kicked off the forum whether or not they are guilt, consequences of scams could be a red trust or a flag.
The op was referring to users who expose how they caught out a scam attempt and if it should be public; For one, it is necessary to detail how you arrived at that conclusion to convince others as well. Even though it could be counter productive by making scammers more aware, it is a necessary system.
3152  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Road to Hero! A challenge to self, and challenge to yours! on: May 14, 2021, 07:27:47 PM
If someone is posting just to get bragging rights they have the most merits for the day, month or year whatever it is, I don't think its an issue. It just means we are getting more quality posts on the forum, which is always welcoming.
I believe it could actually become an issue depending on how the user approaches the situation; There are short cuts some forum members try to take inorder to earn merits. I remember the case of a certain user some months ago, who would make a thread on his alt and drop a prewritten reply with his main account inorder to get merits. The trend could also lead to spam as users try to post in threads or boards they think have more potential to get merits, whether or not they are knowledgeable of the topic.

Aiming for merits would only benefit the forum if the users are knowledgeable and not more concerned about selfish interest.
3153  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why crypto (bitcoin) is better than traditional money? on: May 14, 2021, 03:39:33 AM
Money is used to buy goods and services and there are very less businesses accepting crypto and still the prices are rocket High.
Bitcoin works quite differently from traditional payment means like fiat and as such its value is also determined differently. True, much less businesses are accepting Bitcoin (although the number is increasing) but its value is determined by the algorithm it is built on and the block chain technology, some of these qualities are listed in the above quote.

Moreover all government have there own currency, goverment cannot let that sink and can ban these.
Again, Bitcoin isn't competing with fiat currencies, both can easily co exist in a system to serve different purposes.

3155  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to transfer bitcoins anonymously? on: May 12, 2021, 07:22:04 PM
You can pass the coins through a mixer or use a wallet that supports  coinjoining services, this way the transaction would be untraceable to the exchange transaction.
Also, you can avoid exchanges which request KYC to further protect your privacy
3156  Economy / Speculation / Re: BTC in the $xxx, xxx price zone on: May 12, 2021, 07:00:36 PM
If you take a deep look then almost more than 3 years have taken Bitcoin to touch a new ATH after 2017.
...
But the question will it take 3 years like before that happened in 2017?
The $20k mark in 2017 was the end of that bull run and heralded the bear market which lasted for majority of the next few years, past the next halving which occurred last year. Expecting the time between now and 6 figures to have a similar duration sort of suggests that we have gotten to the peak of this cycle and are entering a bear market, which I do not think is the case.

$100k is possible within this cycle, but there are of course no guarantees.
3157  Economy / Speculation / Re: Looks like BTC about to make its next leg up on: May 12, 2021, 06:55:08 PM
I'm really not much bothered about (immediate) future price movements and rarely cheek price actions as I plan to hodl for much longer that the immediate future. If you're a long term holder, sharp spikes and dips are not really that important as you do not intend to take profit or cut losses anytime soon

As to the link I hope this forum doesn't allow malware.  Does it?
Posting malwares are against forum rules and would get a user banned, but they can be posted and stay up for a while before mods notice and delete them, so, it helps to be careful.
3158  Other / Meta / Re: Why are "Likes" turned off in this forum? on: May 12, 2021, 03:41:24 PM
But that's why a like button would be helpful. It's common courtesy to thank someone for help and a like button would at least curb people just littering threads with pleasantries.
It is an option, but I have my reservations about it.
What real purpose would a 'like feature' serve, to show how many people appreciated your contribution who may not have any smerits to give at the time?

If there's no means to earn the likes would it not turn out to be an unnecessary metric that would be giving at the slightest whim without careful consideration? Users earn merits and by extension smerits, so they would try to be very careful in giving them out, likes on the other hand would be easily overused.
Creating a system where likes are earned (sort of like the bump system) is an alternative, but not sure if it's worth the stress for the admin.

<snip>
@Charles-Tim you talk well.
But shouldn't Bitcoin payment be an option? I understand the high fees and how it would be expensive to withdraw out for the organizer but not everyone uses USDT and those who don't use it need a way to still stay anonymous. Wetin una think?
3160  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: BIP39 word list languages importance on: May 12, 2021, 03:49:07 AM
If people want to join crypto, they should know English, at basic level.
This is quite restrictive and I do not think one needs basic knowledge of English to join crypto, white papers have been translated to multiple languages, there are informative videos and articles also in multiple languages and on the topic of seed phrases, one does not need to have knowledge of the meaning of the words to use a see phrase, they are sometimes called mnemonics but are definitely not meant to be memorized, ony written down, anyone can copy down a bunch of grouped letters.

Is there anything I am missing?
I assume there is a security risk to using different languages to make up the seed phrase reason why it has not been widely adopted.
