Didn't read the whole OP, just musing on the title.
This is a joke, right?

There is also http://bitcoincommodities.com/Of the several businesses like this that I know of, only Amagi Metals (see my signature line) was in business before bitcoin. It is not a "bitcoin business", but an actual business that adopted bitcoin as a payment option.

Forgive me if this is a stupid post, but is vanitygen safe?
That is to say, are the keys that it generates always 100% working keys that can be imported into a Bitcoin client? Is there a chance of creating a "bad private key" from vanitygen, such that one cannot, for some reason, import said key into a wallet?
Are the keys that are generated with vanitygen random enough, or at least as random as addresses generated with the standard Bitcoin client?
Also, I am assuming that smarter folks than I have made sure that this little program doesn't create keys and then send them all back to the vanitygen creator or something else likewise nefarious, right?

I think the big difference between the "bitcoin elites" and the existing financial system elites is the "bitcoin elites" are working really hard to distribute our power.
We're getting there, but it will take time. I really hope in a year or two there will be at least three or four different bitcoin implementations all producing blocks, validating transactions, etc. And in ten years there will be a dozen or more.
That is a natural progression; I was around when NCSA Mosaic was the one web browser and the NCSA server was the only web server, and there have been a couple cycles of certain browsers / web servers becoming dominant and then fading. I expect to see a similar evolution for Bitcoin infrastructure software.
do you mean alt chains? no, he means like BitcoinJ and maybe Armory. No he means full nodes like bitproof What is bitproof?

I think the author is a tool. I just felt everyone should know the FUD being spread.
This is the only reason I posted it.
I met Gavin in NYC bitcoin conference . At the time I owned flexcoin. I believe he's a good guy.
The author is not a tool. He's a smart writer who made decent arguments. Stop calling anything negative written about Bitcoin "FUD". For Bitcoin to succeed, it needs to be criticized so that legitimate weaknesses can be improved upon. Gavin may be a good guy, but Bitcoin needs to be able to survive even if Gavin was a bad guy. That's the whole point of Bitcoin. Hear, hear!

Blockchain.info stopped reporting new blocks. We've had 15 blocks since.
Aha, that explains it. It is a blockchain.info issue and not a block/blockchain issue.
|
|
|
Granted, I don't spend days on end staring at blockchain.info, but the current 2 hours 6 minutes is the longest I personally have seen between instances of something that is supposed to happen, on average, every 10 minutes.
|
|
|
I noticed on blockchain.info, the last block is showing as being 1 hour 33 minutes ago (block #230145), which got me wondering:
What has been the longest time in between blocks?

Are you willing to break it up. In about a week I'll need $80-100
Without meaning to hijack his thread, if he can't do it, I can. I'm looking to help someone I know here locally buy some BTC. I suggested amazon gift cards (which could be physically purchased today in-store). I had looked into BitInstant, but I have also read some reports about them having some issues from time to time. So if anyone else is looking to convert BTC-->Amazon gift cards, then let me know. They're wanting to get about 3 bitcoins for the equivalent in gift cards.

Bitcoin is gold for the internets.

I am trying to help a friend buy some BTC (because I didn't want to sell 'em any of mine ). Rather than wait around for bank wires and all that, we could get some Amazon gift cards from the store and sell the code/card to a trusted member for BTC.

I have a related noob question. If you have the public and private key printed out, maybe just as QR codes, (like what you can make at http://www.bitaddress.org) and you want to spend them, is there any online wallet or exchange that lets you just input those two keys and access the coins, or do you have to do it by importing keys though a wallet client application on your computer, then transfer it to on online exchange? You can redeem with blockchain.info

Phew, I had 24BTC in Instawallet last year when it was $5.
Feel the same having coins in BTC-e while playing with a bit of trading now.
I know the feeling!

I travel internationally a lot. I know that if I cross a border with $10k or more that I must declare it. But what about my bitcoins? I have a smartphone account that allows me to spend my coins, and some might say that I possess those coins on my phone. I know this is technically incorrect. However, what would customs say? The fact is I could march right out of the airport and buy a Land Rover with my coins. Does this mean that I brought a store of wealth into the country? If you think yes or no, please provide a legal basis for your thinking.
The bitcoins are stored in the blockchain. Only the keys are in your wallet. People cross borders all the time with their passwords to online banking sites in their heads. Do they declare their balance and username/password just because they could theoretically access their traditional banking site from foreign countries? I wouldn't confuse officials with bitcoins... I'd keep my mouth shut.

I like to watch my offline paper wallets on blockchain.info by importing as watch only. I can't seem to do this with my Casascius coins what's the problem?
Look up the full address from the firstbits on the coin, and add the full address into the "watch only" part of the blockchain.info wallet. It hasn't been a problem for me.

I plan to hold until Bitcoin is fully adopted as online currency or dead. It's kinda lottery ticket stuff that way, losing never hurts Agreed. Though unlike lottery tickets it's a classical black swan bet, as you can't know the odds, the downside is limited and and the upside is unlimited. Exactly! Hell, one is gambling by *not* holding bitcoins!

Forgive me, I am new to Armory.
I have bitcoin-qt running and Armory is still saying "disconnected".
I have restarted both and bitcoin-qt is updated with a green check, but Armory is still disconnected.
Any ideas?
