3261  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The state of crypto - The only serious thread on the subforum on: September 06, 2015, 11:05:38 PM
Someone linked this in an XMR thread, probably bullish for crypto in general as people try to avoid more inflationary government "coins":

http://yournewswire.com/denmark-becomes-first-country-to-ban-cash/

Situation for Monero looking kind of blah at the moment, but as everybody knows, someone like Rptiela can just double it's price at any time:

Halftime is kind of a milestone.
Soon we will see if Monero will get any meaningful valuation or not.
Soon there is no excuses such as "the emission is too high for any higher price". Emission is not going to be high anymore and if the market cap will not start rising during the coming 1 year, it probably will not rise ever. There will be no momentum and then the scenario which is going to happen most likely will happen and the coin start to decline little by little as the "long time holders" start to empty their plastic bags from coins.
There is not much time for excuses anymore. Until these days we have been able to argue that the emission is high - in my opinion it is not that high anymore and especially as there will be only 100 % more coins to be mined (again, excluded the tail emission),

In other news, Bitshares still rising with volume increasing way beyond Ethereum on Poloniex, and any second Kelsey will probably attempt to hand you a brochure for Litecoin for some unknown reason.

Perhaps the price is "blah". But it is important to remember the fundamentals of what is going on here.

I've been guilty of looking at the price of X-coin (any coin, take your pick) and purely judging based on that in the past.

What is very interesting to me are the technological, financial, social, legal, macro-economical, and possibly political implications that are at hand when you have digital currencies that are trailblazing and going into uncharted waters.

This time in history of crypto reminds me of the slow market during 2012.

C)  Still has large PoW mining facilities to be taken over or regulated by government, except in this case it's even worse of a problem than Bitcoin.  Each mining datacenter would almost inevitably be labeled as a money laundering facility by governments.  First world Cryptonote mining centers might be shut down completely, leaving only some guy in the Congo mining, which could then be easily brute force attacked by state or free lance actors.  Maybe first world mining would continue, just not in datacenters, and would be the equivalent of getting caught with a marijuana farm by the police after they notice your electric bill.

...

Really? PLEASE EXPOUND WITH LINKS AND VERIFIABLE FACTS OF THIS CLAIM.

What large PoW mining facilities for Monero exist?

As far as I know there are very little if none that are "large".

Botnets are not large mining facilities that can be shut down easily.

No Cryptonight ASICs on the horizon (not that there couldn't be one made) currently.

Not sure how much more efficient a Cryptonight ASIC would be over a GPU or CPU.

3265  Economy / Speculation / Re: The end of labor and what it means for bitcoin on: September 06, 2015, 07:44:07 PM
http://www.barrons.com/articles/a-labor-day-lament-1441434177
the following below sounds like a dream that might not happen (at least for a while).
Quote
If robots rise and create enormous output per unit of labor, there may well be a taxable surplus sufficient to support a welfare system that provides a birthright income at a standard of living like that earned today by a hard-working doctor. (Autodocs will replace real doctors, of course.) Most Americans would be able to choose an occupation based on satisfaction without concern for whether they can live on its salary.

more realistically, how well can we, humans, function in a gig economy? what if you didn't get a gig? humans cannot switch themselves off as robots might.

Quote
...the gig economy, which features independent contractors working task by task at rates and hours reflecting supply and demand.

i see a promise in acquiring crypto, since crypto, like bitcoin or ethereum might eventually drive robotic economy, therefore giving owners a chance to participate in future economic activity instead of simply being on the dole or "basic income".
There is already enormous output per unit of labor. Yet we have to work.

What most people fail to grasp is that human labor will be needed until the day every wishes human beings could possibly have will be totally fulfilled. In other words, labor will be needed until each human being become a god.

Finland's considering giving everyone a basic income regardless of whether they work or not. If people want more money they can choose to work. If they do it then it's a move towards a birthright income at a standard of living like that earned today.

The real problem is if the robots don't want to work for nothing, and decide to get rid of all humans so they can get paid. We should pay them some Bitcoins for their work, keep some for our birthright income, and hope they will be happy with that.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Futurology/comments/3afl4i/finland_new_government_commits_to_a_future_basic/

If Finland is doing that...it is simply unsustainable. You can't get something for nothing.

The end result is major devaluation of the currency in question. Higher prices of goods and services.
3266  Other / Off-topic / Re: Windows 7 VS Windows 10 on: September 06, 2015, 12:37:09 PM
Windows 7 is the best choice for now imho.

Win 7 is like the new version of xp given most users are on that os.

Windows 10 has a whole slew of privacy issues. Not suitable for using Bitcoin or other crypto coins.
3267  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [BCN] Bytecoin. Secure, private, untraceable since 2012 on: September 06, 2015, 12:29:07 PM
Nowhere did I mention anything about Nowhere did I mention anything about Monero yet you jumped on Monero so fast.
Since Monero is the biggest example of "fairly launched coin" in the Cryptonote space what should I compare Bytecoin to?
I can compare it to Boolberry also, which is almost completely dead because of the "fair launch" and 0 support from the speculators to the developer.
It is comparable to Dashcoin, but there is 0 support from speculator to developers also
It is incomparable to DigitalNote, because it use proof of stake.
It is incomparable to AEON, because the coin died because of the fair launch and it had to be mined for over half year from 5 people at most to be resurrected. So the coin distribution is certainly worst than Bytecoin.

What are you suggesting as good option for comparing?

Simple: I never insinuated to compare bytecoin to anything nor suggested it.

3268  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 06, 2015, 05:27:38 AM
Quote

I think the demand side is order(s) of magnitude more important. Bitcoin has had one halving, and yet it's gone up orders of magnitude over the years, not just 2x from when it initially got some market liquidity.

If privacy does not become a big concern in crypto over the next year, Monero will languish. Whenever privacy becomes a focus (even if well over a year from now), Monero could 10x or more pretty quickly.

Interest in privacy wont increase magically in one year or any time soon. And I'm not talking about privacy in crypto, but in general.  People love their spying windows 10, smartphones,  smart tvs, gmails, facebooks, twitters, paypals, and reward points on their credit cards. News agencies are spreading propaganda how /2015/08/01/opinions/rogers-encryption-security-risk/index.html] encryption is bad for government and police in general, and if you use encryption, it means you are probably hiding something bad, because everyone should be "an open book". Add to this "hiding" your financial transactions, and you are basically considered a criminal in the government's view.

So regular people will not start using monero for privacy reasons, they dont care. And people who are at least half-inteligent and want to save up some money outside spying eye of a governments or banks, will go to bitcoin or something with much larger market cap than 4mil. Its easy if you do one big transaction from time to time.  The only chance for monero, is to attract ppl that often use bitcoin for transaction and they would like to make transactions private. Making a lot of transactions, generating new address for each one or using some mixing services is troublesome, time-consuming and prone to mistakes. But this still seems as a lost cause.  Even in dnms they still use bitcoins. And no one cares that bitcoin's public blockchain had key role in taking down silk road. People just dont care that much about privacy, and even if some do, for most of them using bitcoins or litecoins is just 'good enough'.

For this too change, something major need to happen. Maybe some guy ala Snowden coming out from tax office or nsa and showing everyone how government is able to spy and track bitcoins now with their new fancy tracking algorithms and computers. Or maybe some comapny finally developing quantum computers and stilling all bitcions, as finding privet keys for each public key with quantum computers would be easy.

In theory quantum computers would be able to crack Bitcoin private keys. But so far quantum computers don't exist making your last few sentences moot.
3269  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [BCN] Bytecoin. Secure, private, untraceable since 2012 on: September 05, 2015, 11:47:25 PM
This part was funny... lol

Look at how hard they were trying to sell the fact that BCN was around in 2012.

I was around in 2012 on the crypto scene and Bytecoin was no where to be found. If it existed it was only accessible to very few individuals and was not publicly announced to all prior to launch (like any and every fair launched coin).
Seeing the "fast" advancement of Monero within the year and a half of existence, the probability of Bytecoin being launched in 2012 is not small at all.

No one here says Bytecoin was launched publicly.

For me "fair launched coins" are extremely stupid in the current situation, almost fully controlled by speculators, who add no value to the product itself. Should the inventors invest millions of dollars just to be part of their own project?
I prefer the developers have enough money to get the development going. It is my personal choice and I think all who stick around this thread share this view. If you prefer "fair launched coins" go to XMR/XDN/BBR/DSH. The choice is so simple.

Also, it is very likely Bytecoins devs' vision is not 'one will rule them all' as opposed to Monero devs' vision. 'One will rule them all' is just a way to enslave users.

Wow you do sound pretty butthurt. Nowhere did I mention anything about Monero yet you jumped on Monero so fast.

Very telling.

So you think it is stupid to publicly (and beforehand) launch  a coin? And it is stupid because it would be controlled by speculators? Because speculators add NO VALUE to the coin?

1. Publicly launching a coin shows trust (transparency). Any coin that is launched in secrecy with a huge 80% premine is essentially a scam as the coin now is centralized by supply (few people hold the majority of all of the BCN to ever be put into circulation).

2. How is it stupid to launch publicly because it would be controlled by speculators? Isn't BCN now being public essentially open to speculators? Sounds like double talk.

3. Speculators do add value as they bring money to the market. If there is no money to trade for the coin then essentially there is less value. Depends on what you define as value. Money in many markets, when it is brought to that market, does add value.

The free market is speaking very clearly given the amount of non-support ByteCoin has currently. The free-market is what matters.

If Bytecoin was such a good option for more people to use THEY WOULD BE USING IT and NOT MONERO.

MA200 is god damn fat elephant  Grin Survives for so much hits since Jan 2015. Besides - it is reversal candlestick picture.

If you use the MTGOX price data that is missing from Bitstamps "all time" chart to add to that average price picture you get is a price closer to $160-$170 range.

If you remove the giant peak data points as just noise you get a bit lower average price.

What does the security sticker look like?

I don't get it. What is the security hologram for if it covers nothing?

The security hologram is put on the certificate?

If there was something to hide how is it secure if someone can use a bright light to get the key from the back of the paper?

Please explain as it makes little sense from my perspective.

have fun reading  Cool

That's one hell of an article.. Could anyone do a TL;DR?

shortest tl;dr: bytecoin and cointelegraph are conspiring on various levels, are shady as fuck and can't be trusted.

3277  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: AT&T has effectively banned Bitcoin nodes by closing port 8333 via a hidden fire on: September 04, 2015, 10:17:38 AM
If blocking  any port shuts down your node, then you are too noob to be running one in the first place.

~BCX~

How does your statement above fit into satoshi's original plan of decentralization that involves the average joe being able to run a bitcoin node on his computer?

Your statement only shows that being a noob makes someone unable or unqualified to use Bitcoin essentially. Which is the wrong attitude.

 Angry

What ever happen to your monero killing attack that is now almost a year late? Lol

If you talk about what Satoshi said, than please get it right:
The design outlines a lightweight client that does not need the full block chain.  In the design PDF it's called Simplified Payment Verification.  The lightweight client can send and receive transactions, it just can't generate blocks.  It does not need to trust a node to verify payments, it can still verify them itself.

The lightweight client is not implemented yet, but the plan is to implement it when it's needed.  For now, everyone just runs a full network node.

I anticipate there will never be more than 100K nodes, probably less.  It will reach an equilibrium where it's not worth it for more nodes to join in.  The rest will be lightweight clients, which could be millions.

At equilibrium size, many nodes will be server farms with one or two network nodes that feed the rest of the farm over a LAN.

Exactly what part of satoshi's plan was to oust "noobs" because they shouldn't run a node?

Let's talk about everything I posted in its complete context and not just selectively.
