3281  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - Lightweight Bitcoin Client on: July 27, 2015, 05:17:42 PM
I want to add... i observed the log of advor a little bit more, when im logged on to a server and im doing nothing, why are there connection requests to other servers? Is electrum asking for a serverlist or something?

The log shows this:
Code:
[19:12:12] [proxy] Connection request for blockchain.info:443 .
[19:12:46] [proxy] Connection request for sync.bysh.me:8080 .
[19:12:47] [notice] [electrum-2.1-portable.exe PID: 13280, ID: 210] Downloading from http://sync.bysh.me:8080/label
[19:14:44] [proxy] Connection request for blockchain.info:443 .

Im connected to a different server though. The label sync is normal though, its enabled.
3282  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - Lightweight Bitcoin Client on: July 27, 2015, 04:59:27 PM
Its strange that i only now get the idea to ask but can it be that certain servers are overloaded some time? Its not seldom that i cant connect to a server. Normally i dont use autoconnect because i think its way too risky spreading my addresses to every server that asks me to know my addresses. You never know who runs them. (Or do i miss that all electrum servers does now all wallet addresses anyway?)

Anyway... i use one server and another when this server doesnt work. And sometimes i cant reach them. It doesnt matter then when i restart electrum or let me give a new ip at AdvOr (thats an advanced TOR software).

So i wonder if server, 10k ones, are overloaded occassionally.

While trying to connect again i found that advor claims i should use socks4a instead socks5, because its safer. At least the log states:
Quote
[18:50:24] [warn] Your application (using socks5 to port 8444) is giving Tor only an IP address. Applications that do DNS resolves themselves may leak information. Consider using Socks4A (e.g. via privoxy or socat) instead. For more information, please see http://wiki.torproject.org/noreply/TheOnionRouter/TorFAQ#SOCKSAndDNS.

Im not sure if socks4a is better but i changed it in electrum, then tried to connect again. But it didnt work. I checked the advor log and it still claims i used socks5... repeating log entries. So i wonder if that setting wasnt changed correctly in electrum. Since when i restarted electrum again then it used socks4. And i could connect.

Socks5 should work too since i know i could connect with it before.

So does someone know what my connection problems could be? Getting a new ip from tor doesnt help and i see the logfile showing many connection attemps.

By saying that... another thing i wonder... when i want to connect to a server without autoconnect then the log of advor shows connection requests to many different ips. What i wonder is what that is.
3283  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Stolen Bitcoin on: July 27, 2015, 01:13:38 PM
blockchain.info most certiantly DOES NOT need to know your private key...

They use normal 1... bitcoin addresses right? Then how can it be possible that its impossible for them to know the private keys? The wallets are on their servers, which means one way or another they, or at least an employee has to be able to get the keys.

Maybe i did not think it through how it could be done otherwise.

Your browser on your computer encrypts/decrypts your blockchain.info wallet.
Blockchain.info only holds and stores your encrypted wallet and sends it to you.
In theory, they do not know your private keys.

Here is their explanation: https://blockchain.info/wallet/how-it-works

Thats interesting and i hear that the first time.

So the only thing that could compromise that would be when blockchain info somehow could achieve the passwords. Maybe by fetching them from the start or getting them with a compromised script, delivered by a corrupt employee, to the customer.

I couldnt check the image on my current internet so maybe they used an encryption that someone negates that chance. Though it have a hard time imagining how.
3284  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Coin.mx shutdown by federal government, top executives arrested on: July 27, 2015, 01:01:51 PM
basically shut down and under investigation. The coins will probably be confiscated by the authorities and users will never get to use them again (like Silk Road).

I believe with silk road there was the chance to claim your coins. They did not belong to silk road. The thing is... most probably no one did this since he would be connectable to his account. And what did he do there? Selling drugs? Or buying them?

I wonder if there was a legit thing to buy at all, i mean so that a customer only has bought legit items. There is always a reason to use such website so even when someone bought legit things, maybe he wanted to hide the origin of his coins then.

But when the coin.mx coins are in possession of the state then most probably legit users will have the chance to claim them.
3285  Local / Deutsch (German) / Re: lieferservice.de akzeptiert keine Bitcoins mehr on: July 27, 2015, 12:58:50 PM
Den Aluhut darfst du also absetzen Wink

Tongue

By the way... i now took the suggestions on this thread and opened a thread to check out interest in such a potential activity counting bot. We would need someone saying what he would charge for creating it and would need to know if traders are interested into funding it.

Its on here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1136181
3287  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING AN ACCOUNT on: July 27, 2015, 12:53:44 PM
You should be careful the account is not hacked or else the owner may get it banned/claim it later. signing a message by an old BTC address in a previous post can confirm this is the real owner I think.

They might be able to get it banned later, but my understanding is there's no way to reclaim an account once it's been sold and the information is changed.

There is a way to get it back supposedly by contacting the admin "Theymos" and signing a message from an address posted in an old topic/private message, That wasn't working recently though.

Ahh, interesting... I think that's a catch-22. If they allow it, people who buy accounts can reclaim them. If they don't, people with their accounts hacked are screwed.

IMO, people shouldn't be able to sell accounts regardless. It's basically selling reputation, and is one of the big contributors to all the scams around here.

The risk of sellers reclaiming an account can be negated by the seller demanding a signature from the seller. This signature should be signed with an old bitcoin address that was posted by the account to be sold, in the past. The older the better. Ideally quoted by other persons so that it cant be edited. The signature contains the date of selling and the new owners forum name.

The buyer then can proove that he bought the account since only the real owner can sign a message with such an old address.

So i suggest posting an address, that you can sign a message with, on here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=996318

Regarding selling reputation... thats correct and thats something not ok. But it happens. The more reason to not trust someone simply because he has trust. Its not avoidable that such accounts are sold. Im not aware of an account that was misused that way yet though.

Mostly accounts are bought for taking part on signature campaigns. Its a good income for many people in the world.
3288  Economy / Marketplace / Is there interest to crowdfund an open source potential activity counter? on: July 27, 2015, 12:47:06 PM
I ask this on here because account sellers will be around here. If the thread is better placed elsewhere then let me know.

The topic is about counting activity of forum accounts. With an account that has a couple hundred of posts, or even thousands, its work to count the potential activity. But its an important thing for sellers and buyers.

So subSTRATA suggested a bot: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1112707.msg11952386#msg11952386 Such a bot would make account trading very much easier. Sellers have an easy task to count, buyers can verify when they bought and escrows can verify fast when the buyer wants the escrow to check the potential activity.

What i would want to ask in this thread is if there is someone offering a price for creating such a bot and secondly if there are enough sellers interested to crowdfund such a bot. I dont have a clue how easy such task would be though there should be certain scripting languages for browsers.

So i would like to post offers for creating such a bot and i would like to post if someone would tip for such a cause.
3289  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING AN ACCOUNT on: July 27, 2015, 12:37:51 PM
When i would knew the seller told the account to others then i would not buy anymore. So i would ask him. When he tells me then im out.

Why? There are some people on the forum that give sold accounts negative. If one of these asks the seller, they dont have to be interested in fact, then the account is at risk. Why should i buy such account then?

Its simply not worth then. So i think its not smart to reveal the accoun to anyone other than the escrow. He can check everything and the account is safe until its really sold.

I still search a fast way to check for potential activity. Anyone knows one? Accounts with high post counts are no fun to count the 2 week periods.

nice to see a different perspective on the matter, as you run an escrow service; maybe ive just gotten lucky so far with the accounts. as for counting activity, it would likely be possible to create a script that could do that; bit-x's signature campaign bot can read through posts and get a rought character count, section the post was in, and other info that is used in calculating posts for a sig campaign. im sure there's a way to get the dates of the posts in order to calculate the activity. im sure bitcoin boy could implement something like that in a day with the existing code from the sig campaign bot.

Yeah, i even think it could become a service. Either selling such bot for cheap, since its usefulness is limited, or having a website you enter the profile id and it counts the potential activity.

Guess someone needs to work on that idea and he could charge some pennies for a count. I think there are many professional account traders. They might use that service, and get a screenshot. Or, when it is a website, then the website owner could create a service thread an post a signature signed with a bitcoin address he posted. Then, on the website, automatically a signature is created that states the potential activity. The text can be copied and the escrow can verify that the account, named in the signature message, really has the mentioned activity.

That is the perfect idea to count the potential activity for each account Smiley
Every account seller may contribute to this for a bot like this on.
It would help us and would save us time.

That is actually an even better suggestion. A project that is open source and can scrape the posts. It is even better because the accounts only are known to the one checking it, you dont have to trust another party.

I wonder if such a crowdfunding will work...
3290  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN][CLAM] CLAMs, Proof-Of-Chain, Proof-Of-Working-Stake on: July 27, 2015, 12:29:22 PM
Oh, is bitaddress.org yours too or did you rip their design only? Tongue I used bitaddress quite some time already.

No, bitaddress.org isn't mine. It's open-source, so I forked it and made a CLAM version. I also used a small bit from https://bitcoinpaperwallet.com/bitcoinpaperwallet/generate-wallet.html (which itself is based on bitaddress.org) to allow skipping of the entropy collection.

Could this be the first CLAM paper wallet in the world?

He used photoshop to replace the low-resolution image produced by clamaddress.org with a higher resolution version. I wonder how best to allow clamaddress.org to produce print-ready images itself, while still fitting on the screen. Any ideas?

If its written in php then there are certain libraries that can create images out of text and such things. Its widely used with typo3, the cms, and it creates nice images. Im not sure what you will use it for but these things exist. Though they are rather big and they have a learning curve. At the end it will be easy.
3291  Other / Off-topic / Re: Worst mistake you did with Bitcoin? on: July 27, 2015, 12:17:54 PM
Mine was acting on emotions. Roll Eyes Let me tell you that emotions are the worst when it comes to investments. If you ever feel that you have to invest now in order to not lose a chance... then DONT invest. Let it be. There is no chance big enough to act on emotions. And for the most part these emotions are a bad advice anyway.
3292  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: ===►Maidak scammed me 400$ BTC,this time is for sure===► on: July 27, 2015, 12:07:08 PM
I'm rather uncomfortably on the fence on this whole thing after reviewing this all. So Maidak as it would seem is most definitely having liquidity issues. Even then, with liquidity issues, why wouldn't you just give the BTC back? The BTC was simply nicked and sold. I can't see a plausible reason a sane person would do this if their business was struggling.

When you offer to buy $5k worth of BTC saying you will send funds "over in a few minutes" then disappear for months then you are a scammer, no excuses or bullshit.

He knew he did not have the funds to pay for the goods before initiating the deal.

I have to admit I sorta hate this binary mindset that some people on here exhibit where someone is a scammer and someone else is a non-scammer and as if that describes accurately the world we live in.  In point of fact, there are all kinds of shades of grey and degrees of negative behavior.  Satements like "that guy is a scammer, no excuses or bullshit" seem to ignore the fact that if he pays back eventually, that is clearly better behavior than never paying back at all.  And to talk this way, as if the world is a collection of scammers and non-scammers is in fact a misleading dichotomy which only adds confusion and rankor.  If someone makes a mistake and then tries to clear it up, it's clearly better than not trying to clear it up.  I just have become quite sick and tired of this binary scammer/non-scammer thing, I just don't think it's helpful.

I agree with you. Paying back is definitely better than a scammer.

Saying that... claiming that he scammed is still valid since accepting money while knowing that you can't fulfill the contract is scamming. It only would not be if it would be the agreed thing to do.

I don't know why he decided to do this.

Anyway... when he really pays back then i suggest a slow and steady repayment plan. Then he could show he is still behind and working on it and hickups could be seen fast.

Calling around scammer might be true but for the sake of repayment it is better to set focus on repayment. Debtors dont want to put him into a state of mind where he gives up hope totally. That would be a business decision on the side of the debtors.

Tongue Klingt plausibel.
3294  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: International shipping forwarder list on: July 27, 2015, 10:31:55 AM
I'd have no problem doing this whatsoever, provided the goods are 100% legal.

Legality of the goods is maybe the biggest problem but there are other problems I can think of and that need to be addressed before this thread can take off.

Problem: Legality of the goods.

Possible solutions: Receive only from trusted stores or trusted members. Full description of the contents and if possible photos.

Problem: Goods are legal in one country but not in the destination country. Legal grey areas.

Possible solutions: Importer must be responsible to know what's legal in destination country.

Problem: The goods never arrived to the forwarder.

Possible solutions: Only registered mail can be used. Any party not using registered mail has to assume responsability for lost goods.

Problem: Online tracking shows "delivered" but the forwarder claims he never received it

Possible solutions: Huh I don't know but anyone used to deal with escrow might know how to solve this.

If we can establish some ground rules here I believe many members can start offering this service.

I believe the better positioned candidates are escrow providers. They are already trusted to hold our money so they will also be trusted to send and receive our stuff.

*edit

Possible providers:

I found these threads from the same member but he's not active since Jan 15:

I will buy anything you want from California and ship anywhere

I'll buy anything you want from Costco and ship it anywhere [150 photo walkthru]

Not active since Dec 13: Anonymous Mail Drop/Forwarding

Old thread with some info: why are mail forwarding/mail drop services so expensive?

You have some very good thoughts and the solutions are fine.

Another possibility would be that the forwarder is ordering himself. It would be another service but he could be 100% sure that the goods are legal and he could act when problems arise.
3295  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Which is the best Investment Option for Bitcoins? on: July 27, 2015, 10:24:47 AM
I think the best investment is gambling the btc for several months

more like the worst.
gambling away your btc without knowing when to stop is a sure way to lose all of your balance because you will lose eventually.

I have to agree. Gambling is the worst advice. Its not even an investment. Mathematics say you will lose over time with certainty. And you cant change the odds on dice sites for example.

And there is NO working strategy.

I would strongly advice against gambling.

Additionally... NEVER invest on emotions. If you feel you will lose a chance and you feel the urge to invest fast then DONT invest. There is simply no chance you have to take on emotions. Thats a costly lesson i learned and i hope i can safe some of you with that advice. Tongue

3297  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would you use Bitcoin hashpower to attack altcoins? on: July 27, 2015, 10:14:32 AM
I don't see a point of doing this. We are all the same family, aren't we? I hate when different cryptos are seen as competitors. We are all fighting for better financial tomorrow so this question is useless for me.

i don't see it like that, some user can do this not because they hate altcoin, but because they can perform a 51% easily and double spend like no tomorrow, thus earning more bitcoin

I think when it could be done riskless then it would have been done a lot already. Firstly it might be hard to cash out the illegitime cash since exchanges will monitor the blockchains closely i guess.

Second, these altcoins mostly dont have a market depth that makes that worthwhile. So cashing out is hard.

And lastly... you will do something illegal since lawyers, most probably, will have an easy time to explain that you faked data and did some kind of hack. At least in the past all sort of such things in other areas could be claimed as a form of computer sabotage and so on.

Its risky in so many ways so i doubt something like that will happen.
3298  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: [ANNOUNCE] Electrum - Lightweight Bitcoin Client on: July 27, 2015, 10:06:53 AM
Is there any updated documentation on the label sync plugin? I found instructions here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=154144.0 but that seems to be for an older version of the plugin. The help icon references this page https://github.com/maran/electrum-sync-server but doesn't talk about usage of the client. Do I just click "force upload" on the computer that has my labels and then "force download" on my watching only wallets, without signing up for any account or entering an API key?

As far as i used it yes. The only thing needed is the key and your wallet is recognized and the labels attached to the addresses and transactions are stored and recovered.

Though its of course that your labels are stored at a server, so centralized risk. I would prefer having the possibility to specify a file on my computer, i would store it in a cloud directory, and let my labels sync there. I would at least avoid that additional risk. I mean server owners has to give out the details when asked, especially in the US.

Saying that... the feature saved my labels often since the electrum database not seldom loses labels.

Dooglus, can you tell how much bandwith just-dice is taking per hour when you are in the chat tab? I assume its not so much but it might pile up.

Occassionally i have to use my smartphone internet and i didnt find a way yet to measure the bandwith usage per tab in firefox.

So can you give an estimate number for hourly bandwith usage?
3300  Other / Archival / Re: Updated Overview of Bitcointalk Signature-Ad Campaigns on: July 27, 2015, 09:51:47 AM
Bit-x Signature campaign have limited the number of posts. @OP , Plz update the main post and the number of posts limit in the table.

Why did they change that again? Was the amount of spam too much to handle? As far as i know it was the only signature campaign that had no cap and was paying rather much. Too bad that didnt work out. :/
