They contacted me to advertise under their affiliate program and they said they would send me a unit to try. I said I would buy some units and they said they would give me a discount. Once I saw they had no reputation of deliveries I said I would order one on my credit card to see what I got. I never heard back so I took their ads down.

Also whenever I run a lite client such as on my mobile... I point it exclusively at my own trusted node!
That is an interesting topic, the concept of a trusted node. Not sure where it will go in the future but I registered TrustedNodes.com last year for some kind of possible service in the future.

a trademark is associated with goods or services so a company name is not necessarily a trademark unless it is used for branding. Trademarks are often associated with products so companies may own hundreds of trademarks. The Paypal sucks thing is allowed because he is talking about paypal, like the media, and is not selling a product/service that capitalizes upon the trademark. So the people who are starting a payment service that are called something like "bitpal" or an auction site called something like "bitbay" should probably expect a call from a lawyer at some point.

Still haven't seen a decent response to this problem...
The problem is not stated completely correctly since mining pools do not have as much control as he states. They depend on the pool members who can switch instantly so I think that part of the problem is overstated. Beyond that he makes some good points but the system is still experimental and it is unclear to me how it will pan out. Several people have claimed the current system is unsustainable over the long term. The problem is that the solutions proposed are mostly centralized models and that eliminates the main point of Bitcoin. Right now we are in the gold rush era since the block rewards are so large. In just over 100,000 blocks the reward will be halved again and there is pressure to keep the transaction fees low so I think that will create a big upheaval in the mining ecosystem. I don't think the current rate of increase can be sustained past the next halving. Note that Dan Kamisky went through this same thing before and claimed POW would be over by the end of last year. His issue was that Avalon asics had a huge percentage of the hashing power because they designed the first working chips. Of course they had no incentive to disrupt the Bitcoin ecosystem so they sold the miners instead of taking over the system. The bottom line is that it is experimental and people who claim to know what will happen or claim something "dead" is hyperbole.

I saw Coinbase does have an option to sign a message with one of your addresses private keys but I don't think you can get the key.

I thought trademark has to be in logo form? Can someone register common words in text form?
There are different kinds of trademarks, some are just text and other are a design. Some places get both and others just get the design logo because the plain text may not fit the requirements for a trademark. So if you have some specific design for "Bitcoin Wallet" you might be able to get a trademark on that specific design but not the words themselves. I would think this situation would be very rare. I really can't imagine that a picture with words it could be unique enough to qualify for a trademark. Logos get trademarks all the time. Logos get trademarked but the associated brand name generally gets trademarked along side it. For example "ford" is likely a trademark of Ford Motor company as is the ford logo. Do you know of any logos that are trademarked, that contain the name of the brand, but the brand name is not trademarked? I don't know how often it happens but I have seen it with common words/phrases that could not get a trademark unless it was part of some kind of logo. Some companies try to use that to get domain names because they have some logo registered with a word in it and they try to dispute a domain name.

Daniel Larimer is a nobody. He does not know what he is talking about. Big "conglomerates" doing the bitcoin mining does NOT effect the security of the block chain. Lets pretend only ONE person in the world is mining bitcoins. Big deal. Who cares? There is nothing that one person can do to hurt bitcoin. Everyone else using bitcoin has the block chain. Easily over 1000 people have the block chain downloaded. No I didn't bother to look that up, it is a safe guess. This one remaining miner cannot change the record, or the records of future transactions.
Perhaps I am missing something, but why does anyone care if everyone STOPS mining bitcoin? The Bitcoin QT software will still behave as a wallet and peer to peer transaction data will still be shared among everyone elses wallet, correct?
Or are miners acting as a control node, in addition to mining?
No, Bitcoin completely depends on mining to operate. A miner in control could completely destroy Bitcoin if they wanted to. if they had a chain that took more work they could release it any time and wipe out all the transactions and miner rewards during the period they mining in secret. Please consider that the only miners who could generate a longer chain than the rest of the network would themselves need to invest nearly 3 quarters of 1 billion dollars just to have enough hardware to 'overstep consensus' that is provided from the current pools (currently - this figure will grow larger as more entrants turn on their mining hardware for the first time in efforts to mine for bitcoin). Saying that miners could destroy it if they had a longer chain is not true - they would simply have their own blocks confirmed and would receive a larger portion of block rewards (rightfully so I might add - for they too are contributing mining power to the network) If an ill-willed miner with a half billion dollars and a chip on his shoulder thinks its better to hijack and effectively freeze Bitcoin transactions - he'll be noticed quick and blacklisted by the legitimate mining traffic even quicker. I didn't say they would destroy Bitcoin, I said they could. How much they would have to spend would depend on a number of circumstances. Most of the calculations you see are bogus because they assume the entity would buy miners from vendors. At this point a 51% attacker would develop their own chips and produce their own hardware. They could mine in secret and release the chain after a long period of time with a bunch of empty blocks and wipe out all the transactions and block rewards over that period.

I remember when some companies refused to have web sites because they didn't want to be associated to porn sites, places that stole credit card number, and web sites with dancing bear gifs.

Wow it is actually surprising I didn't know it either so if someone has bought it for commercial purposes, couldn't we use it today?
Mt Gox will almost certainly sell the trademark, but it's highly unlikely anyone will ever be able to enforce it. Bitcoin as a term is too widely used, almost generic. You can really only prevent others from using your trademark for commercial or other business purposes. Private citizens are able to write and talk about works that are trademarked however they wish. I would also think that the fact that Gox has publicly stated that they approve of anyone using it for any reason would likely make it more difficult to enforce this trademark even if they wanted to. I may be mistaken on this part but I don't think trademarks are actually able to be sold. Trademarks can be bought and sold and you can prevent others from using your TM by suing in court. Writing and talking about TM's is not infringement, it is using the term in commerce for the same "class" that they use it for. You can talk about "Apples" or talk about Apple Computer all you want but you can't sell computers under the name of Apple.

So if you use Coinbase and use their vault? Is it really that bad?
I believe Coinbase uses a script to send coins and sometimes it is delayed and that could cause an invoice to time out. Also, since you don't have the private key you might not be able to prove you made a payment. Usually those things are not a problem and for small amounts it is OK. I would keep a small amount in another service like blockchain.info in case you run into some issue when you are paying for something. I use Armory because of the cold wallet features, paper backups, and "coin control" to control which addresses are used in a transaction. I use other services like blockchain.info for small amounts, when I am on the road, and to have a backup in case I am in a hurry.

If you search on "Bitcoin" using the trademark search (TESS) you get all kinds of interesting things. the ones with 2 numbers means it was approved and they have a TM. "Live" or "dead" means the application is still active or has been terminated.
To challenge any of these you have to file that during the time it gets published wich is after the examiner gets done determining if it is eligible.

Bitcoin Armory is a deterministic wallets so one key determines all the addresses a wallet will use, including all the "change" addresses.
You can copy the key without identifying it as being associated with Bitcoin. You can also print it using a "secure printing" feature. I haven't looked at it too closely but it says it protects transmission from interception over the network. In any case it is best to just use a computer never connected to any network.
