Video removed?

In the meantime, mayor of Slavjansk, Nelja Shtepa, fled the city, after the leader for the group advocating federalisation of Ukraine asked her to come to a meeting:
http://www.novayagazeta.ru/news/1680780.html

Before that she reached an agreement with the representatives of Right Sector to push the protesters out of the government buildings:

A little over 1000 citizens of Crimea decline Russian citizenship so far:
http://www.gazeta.ru/politics/news/2014/04/13/n_6079889.shtml
The authorities stated that they don't see an inflow of declines, ant that they will do everything for these people to still feel included.

1000 (+ 2000 Tatars, who moved to Kiev) out of a population of 2.2 million. Not bad.

Kiev risks ruining four-party talks if force used in Ukraine’s east – Lavrov to Kerry
http://rt.com/news/lavrov-kerry-ukraine-talks-200/

because

Ukraine's Slavyansk under siege as Kiev orders crackdown on protests
http://rt.com/news/eastern-ukraine-violence-slavyansk-240/

and it seems to have resulted in first blood. One Ukrainian army trooper and one protester in Slavjansk killed. Many wounded on both sides of this budding civil war.

Kiev coup government is hell-bent of destroying Ukraine.

Quote
Lavrov has warned John Kerry that “if Kiev’s threats to use force against people driven to despair in the southeast are carried out, prospects for further cooperation on the Ukrainian issue, including a planned four-party meeting in Geneva, will be foiled,” according to Russia’s foreign ministry’s statement.

“The leadership in Kiev is demonstrating its inability to bear responsibility for the fate of the country and to effectively engage all political forces and regions in an inclusive process of drafting a new constitution,” the ministry said.

Quote
The US Secretary of State in the meantime expressed his concerns over the mass protests in the south-eastern regions of Ukraine, claiming that was the “result of ‘instigation’ and nearly direct intervention of the Russian side,” the ministry said.

However, Kerry has stopped short of providing any concrete facts whatsoever, instead repeating that “Russia must remove its people from the South-East.”

"Nearly direct intervention" - what the hell does this formulation supposed to mean?  Roll Eyes

Head of CIA John Brennan visited Kiev and conducted a number of secret meetings with the representatives of the Ukrainian power block (special forces?). This whistleblowing comes from a source in Ukrainian Supreme Rada (parliament)

3504  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Ukraine rejects Russia Gazprom gas price hike on: April 13, 2014, 10:55:59 AM
Kiev does not see any reasons to pay for Russian gas at the new prices so they are stopping all payments for the duration of negotiations.
So, what's new? They didn't pay before, and they are still not paying... Smiley

OK... here is a compromise. Ukraine should clear its debts to Gazprom within the next 7 days. If it is not doing so, then Russia should seize Eastern and Southern Ukraine, and write-off the Ukrainian debts.

I take this as a joke... if not I will cry Smiley

Well, every joke has a grain of truth in it, doesn't it?
If you don't pay for your mortgage, the bank takes your house...

That said, the only acceptable way for Russia to annex South-Eastern regions would be after a referendum in those regions. I also think that for such an important question, the number of votes for joining Russia must be over 70-80% (and not the customary 50% as during "normal" voting).

The other option would be buying that land (Alaska precedent). Given that Ukraine has a large debt, the value of that debt should be subtracted from the purchase price. I remember that recently Germany actually offered to buy some islands from Greece and write off their debt, so it seems to be an EU-approved venue. Wink

Read somewhere that some 2,000 Crimean Muslims have arrived in Kiev as refugees. ROFL... Good riddance I say!

It's always the more radical ones that move. Normal Tatars continue to live and function in the society as before. Oh, well, the West will be happy to have them just as they did with Chechen refugees, about 70-80% of which were of a radical extremist ilk. Remember... cough... Boston..?

Oh, the US is scandalised by Israeli neutrality with the regard to Crimea:

Harkov - 51%
Lugansk - 71%
Donetsk - 70%
Zaporozhje - 58%
Herson - 61%
Odessa - 56%
Nikolaev - 57%
Dnepropetrovsk - 53%

The results from Kherson are a bit suspicious. For long, that province has been regarded as the sole pro-EU bastion in the Eastern Ukraine.

The region has the lowest statistical base of the all, so I wouldn't be surprised by skewed results.
3508  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Donetsk, Kharkov, Lugansk - way to Russia. on: April 13, 2014, 10:17:37 AM

Here's my take on this video. (I talked to a friend who served in the army, and he told me that when they did field exercises with blank rounds, that the large amount of fire coming of nozzles was very characteristic):

Quote
This video (or at least the events) might be staged. Here is what talks for it: 1. From another angle  the older men who try to stop the camouflaged people present themselves as former Afghan soldier, and say that everything is under control, yet the guys with weapons press on. The real protesters would not have done so. 2. Journalists are already in place as if they were warned. 3. Journalists and the majority of the present act completely cool when shooting starts. 4. Shooting is most probably is done with BLANK ROUNDS - there is too much fire coming out of nozzles - someone who was in the military told me that blanks tend to do that. 5. The squad strikes several heroic press-ready poses, shoot a lot, but do not move into the building.

Again, this seems to be staged by Kiev coup government to sell to the Western press. This will soon make rounds on BBC, CNN and Faux-News near you, mark my word.
3509  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Donetsk, Kharkov, Lugansk - way to Russia. on: April 12, 2014, 10:18:32 PM

Might be staged. Journalists already in place. A lot of shooting into the air and shooting in general, yet everyone present is utterly calm. Masked men striking a lot of heroic poses. I am no expert on firearms (the Americans on this forum would be better experts there), but the shots almost looked like blank ones.
3510  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Crimea on: April 12, 2014, 10:08:09 PM

All's well that ends well. With that number of firearms, not a single shot was fired to kill or wound.

By the way, at the very end, when they show Right Sector neutralisation, there's one banner that made me shudder at 7:40: "Crimea will be either Ukrainian or devoid of people"
3511  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Donetsk, Kharkov, Lugansk - way to Russia. on: April 12, 2014, 09:38:59 PM

Very symbolic and emotional sequence from 1:18

Наше дело правое! Победа будет за Нами!

This is the slogan under which our grandfather went to fight fascists in 1941-1945.

Our cause is right! Victory will be ours!

And a comment:

http://itar-tass.com/mezhdunarodnaya-panorama/1117052?utm_medium=rss20

While their friends in US State Department blame Russia for the unrest in the South-East (as if StateDep's installing of Nazis of Right Sector at the helm is not the primary reason for unrest):

One of the comments to the first news (translated from Russian):

Quote
Yarosh hasn't understood that the miners and all the people of Donbass are not the same as unarmed Berkut, who were under orders not to touch anybody. And said people are furious, and that is a terrible force in itself. His suckers are nothing against such force.

And one of the comments to the latter (in the original language and grammar):

Quote
Americans go home!!! dirty bloody hands so from Ukraine!!!

And (translated):

Quote
Next complaint will be that Russia exists at all and by that enrages Washington and Kiev.

In today's world... I wonder if Obama cries at nights for not being able to do anything differently, even if he would have wanted to? Whatever one might think of Putin, it feels like he is in complete control, while thinking about Obama, the word that springs to mind is "scapegoat". In Gorbachev's days, those roles might well have been reversed.
3518  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Donetsk, Kharkov, Lugansk - way to Russia. on: April 12, 2014, 06:36:42 PM

Interesting to see that Hrakov region has the lowest "For joining RF" rating - "only" 50% (EDIT: that's better, already 51%)

The question for each region are:
- Remain in centrally-goverened Ukraine
- Join RF
- Independent republic
- Remain in Ukraine as a Federative subject
(The first and the last question can potentially be summed to see how many favour Ukraine)

The regions are:
- Harkov
- Lugansk
- Donetsk
- Zaporozhje
- Herson
- Odessa
- Nikolaev
- Dnepropetrovsk

Only people living in a particular region can vote for their region, and each can only vote once, the rest of the world can see the results.

This gives an indication of people's preferences, should an official referendum be conducted.

Other commentators think that this was the Euro-Ukrainian plane, sent by Kiev to scare people or do a recon flight, but as Ukraine and Russia use the same hardware, people took it for Russian airplane and actually rallied in jubilee. Cheesy
