361  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: A way to get the word out in meatspace on: May 23, 2011, 10:15:52 AM
It depends on what you mean by "worthwhile".
If thousands of potential Bitcoiners feel good for leaving their browser pointing at a page, that is very worthwhile.
362  Economy / Economics / Re: Why is the spread so large? on: May 23, 2011, 12:56:22 AM
Would it be likely that there would be unintended consequences from a lower fee?  Increased profitability of market manipulation, for instance.
363  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's wrong with Bitcoin? on: May 22, 2011, 11:03:11 PM
It would be nice if weusecoins or whoever had an ubuntu-style nice forum.

I like it here, but I understand that hostility and extremist views (even if consistent and morally admirable) may not be everyone's cup of tea.
364  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Nodes on 3D Globe on: May 22, 2011, 02:16:57 PM
Loads almost instantly for me.  Chrome 11.0.696.68, Ubuntu 11.04.  Scroll wheels work.  Really cool project.
365  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's wrong with Bitcoin? on: May 22, 2011, 12:18:16 PM
All very good points.  I just hope the general public become aware of the unstoppable dissemination of "banned data" before it's used to hit miners over the head.
366  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's wrong with Bitcoin? on: May 21, 2011, 07:18:15 PM
I don't think Problem 6 is going to bring down Bitcoin or anything, but it's a very real threat.

The FBI logo or whatever can go through a function with another data input and output CP.  That additional data is effectively the CP.

Someone is going to develop an app that turns the block chain into write-expensive read-free Usenet.  With an innocent, completely legal app.  And some jackass is going to write CP to the BC.
At that point, any police officer who wants to can arrest a miner, confiscate their harddrives and find use the same innocent app to find CP on them.  If the miners knew that this existed and did nothing to remove those transactions, I think things might not go well for them.

This isn't something I want to happen, but it will, so I wonder whether we have a good way to voluntarily remove malicious transactions, and whether the ahving ability to do that is a good idea.

368  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Could the fees really support the Bitcoin network? on: May 21, 2011, 04:22:37 PM
I believe that it is likely that, were Bitcoin to become a socially accepted tool, corporations like Google, Microsoft et al. would be delighted to throw some of their processors at mining and publicly donate the profits to charity.

An act that benefits everyone and appears altruistically motivated is excellent PR, and these companies can do it cheaper than anyone.
369  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What's wrong with Bitcoin? on: May 21, 2011, 04:18:11 PM
I find point 6 to be extremely relevant.  There will be some groups for whom it would be advantageous for Bitcoin to fail.  Many of these groups are capable of influencing the police and public.
If child porn is spammed onto the blockchain.  I can well believe that the protection of minors is plenty of excuse to target miners.
370  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What is the Best way to Link to your Bitcoin Wallet to receive a Payment on: May 21, 2011, 01:31:27 PM
That works if you don't mind everyone knowing how much BTC is going to your address.  Otherwise, you have to generate a new address for each transfer and pass it privately.
371  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Prerecorded Bitcoin national radio ad starts today! on: May 20, 2011, 10:34:42 PM
Love that second one.

I really want to stay away from promoting BTC as a means of getting more fiat currency.  I like the emphasis on how it is a better tool than USD.
372  Other / Obsolete (buying) / Re: Paying creative writer for drug prohibition parody on: May 20, 2011, 03:22:37 PM
I like it! People selling tiny cartoons on glass and holding them up to the sun or bright lights to see them.  Money being burned when it's found to have had cartoons drawn on it.  Ancient cave paintings being destroyed, but some religions getting an exemption.  Parents being taught to look for signs that their children might start drawing cartoons and how best to punish them.  Cartoon pushers introducing readers to more and more cartoons.  Cartoon smugglers bribing customs.  People trying to swallow handfulls of cartoons.  Condoms bursting in people GI tracts.

There's a lot of fun to be had with this idea.
373  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: Psychoactive, yet another drugs site on: May 19, 2011, 10:57:03 PM
Sorry for all your losses.
374  Economy / Economics / Re: Governments worldwide embraces Bitcoin's economic fluidity and transaction tax. on: May 19, 2011, 02:26:03 PM
Maybe.
Governments could simply require that all one's salary be paid in GovCoins, with x% tax on initial pay and y% tax on transfers.  Simply ban laundering (as it's fairly detectable).  Since Government has the private keys, it could "bank" any amount over 999 GovCoins, to be used for investment by the state and require that more be withdrawn with reason.

Bitcoin has enormous potential to advance human freedom, but authoritarians can use tools too.
375  Other / Archival / Re: Silk Road: anonymous marketplace. Feedback requested :) on: May 19, 2011, 10:49:13 AM
The easiest thing to do is to download the Tor Browser Bundle.
376  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Please test: Bitcoin v0.3.22 release candidate on: May 19, 2011, 10:21:45 AM
Works beautifully in Unity under Natty!

Thanks!
377  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Anyone know what happened to knightmb and his 371,000 BTC? on: May 19, 2011, 09:50:36 AM
That's something I've been wondering, too.

Obviously, I wouldn't presume to advise the elder Bitcoiners.  They're rich and I'm not.
But it might be worth a thread for people to discuss how they might maximise the overall value of their Bitcoins by spending a small percentage appropriately, and how best to go about profiting personally from their assets without crashing the market.

Collusion by those who hold more than 10,000BTC would be valuable.
378  Economy / Economics / Re: How to discourage hoarding - brainstorm on: May 18, 2011, 02:45:55 PM
I've been thinking about this. If Bitcoin becomes a dominant currency, hoarders could represent future "stimulous packages".

The only obvious potential downside is if one of them dumps too quickly.  I imagine that there will be a market for accountants managing Bitcoin Billionaires.
379  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: POLL: How many bitcoins do you CURRENTLY have? on: May 17, 2011, 05:03:14 PM
Sorry, no.  That'd be cool, but once you sell a Bitcoin, it's gone.
380  Other / Off-topic / Re: Choose your faith on: May 17, 2011, 01:16:29 PM
Studies seem to indicate that religious behaviour has tangible benefits, so I've rolled my own.

I'd encourage anyone to become the One True Messiah.  It's very satisfying.

For extra fun, write in a coming apocalypse in which you will rally the forces of $GOOD against $EVIL over the fate of $AFTERLIFE!
If you you feel like looking up to $IDOL, I use a few; primarily Batman.  Which is ironic, since he's honestly sometimes a bit of a fascist.
