3641  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Stuck transaction since June on: November 05, 2022, 10:47:58 AM
I may be totally wrong here, but do exchanges maybe sometimes use this type of workflow?
Code:
Trading account <---> Wallet 'account' <---> Actual Bitcoin wallets
The wording might be different, but yes, something like that. When you deposit funds to the exchange, they get deposited to a main/primary wallet. Let's say you deposited BTC. If you open any trading pair with BTC, the exchange will show you that you have no funds in your account even though you made a deposit. But to be able to trade, you need to go into your exchange wallet and move the coins from your primary account to your trading/swaps account. The usual password/PIN/2FA might be required. Only after you do that, the correct balance will show up when you want to exchange BTC for some other coin.

It's similar to when you want to withdraw from the exchange to your personal wallet. If the coins are still in the trading/swaps account, and there is nothing in the primary wallet, the exchange will show you a 0 withdrawable balance. The funds have to be transferred to the main account so you can withdraw them from there.
3642  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is there anyway to crossref a Bitcoin Wallet ID to a user? on: November 05, 2022, 09:48:10 AM
It depends on what you consider a "Bitcoin Wallet ID". Maybe you are talking about a transaction ID and the hash of the outgoing transaction from your wallet. You can track where the coins went yourself using the above mentioned walletexplorer.com or some other services, like https://www.breadcrumbs.app/, for example.

Aside from that, there isn't much you can do yourself. Even if the coins went to a centralized exchange, that site isn't going to freeze the money or return it to you. You need to get law enforcement involved and prove the crypto was stolen from you. The exchange can help you by telling you what documentation you need to provide them. That's not an overnight thing. But if you are lucky, you might be able to prove the fraud and have the exchange cooperate with law enforcement and reveal the name of the person behind the address. If they have the correct name, that is, and if stolen identities weren't used. There is a lot of 'ifs' and 'maybe's' in the whole process, but if it's a lot of money, it's worth a try.
3643  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Where is my BTC from 2010? Help on: November 05, 2022, 09:29:33 AM
You might want to bring this to someone that knows where to look and how to check every corner of that hard drive.
That should be OP's last resort, and not the first thing to do. Proper recovery instructions have already been provided. If OP gave us the correct information and the computer with its hard drive are still running smoothly, they should be able to access the coins. Let's just hope there isn't a password used for encryption that monTTana has forgotten about.
3644  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: 12 vs 24 seed word trade-offs? on: November 05, 2022, 09:15:34 AM
I will add that I do use a password on top of these words as well.
You are using an extension to your seed, also called a passphrase. The passphrase should be stored separately from your 12-word seed. In case a thief successfully finds the hiding spot of the recovery phrase, they shouldn't get the second essential element to recover your coins (your passphrase).

The passphrase losses its purpose if its written down on the same piece of paper, for example. It's like having a safe where you store all your valuables, but the combination is glued to the door.

As far as I have experienced, all multicurrency wallets I have seen use 24 words seed. Ledger and Coinomi are examples.

Bitcoin only wallets usually have only 12 words seed.
Unless I am wrong, the Trezor T generates 12-word seeds by default. Since it supports altcoins, you can consider it a multicurrency wallet as well. You can also make it generate 24-word seeds, but you need a separate software for that. I had to google it because I forgot its name. It's a command line client called trezorctl.
3645  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: 3 questions about wallets and DEXs on: November 05, 2022, 08:54:54 AM
However, it's always good to upgrade RAM and if you are running older laptop with DDR3 or DDR4, than used RAM is very cheap.
In comparison to DDR5 or if you are comparing DDR3 vs DDR4? My little cousins laptop was running slow a few weeks ago, and since I had some old DDR3s scattered around from old laptops I used many years ago, I gave him some more firepower. Well, I wanted to, but none of the ones I had were compatible. I had to take the laptop to my local IT guy who needed a particular type of L version of the DDR3 to get it up and running. Freaking DDR3s. Anyways, turns out that despite all that trouble and compatibility issues, DDR3 is more expensive then the better DDR4. It's still in demand but the supplies are running low which keeps the prices up.
3646  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: AirGap wallet- Self custody made simple and secure - Protect your crypto offline on: November 05, 2022, 08:36:37 AM
As already mentioned above, our scheme is not compatible with any other implementation, eg. Trezor or Keystone. The main reason is that our implementation is older than the finalised SLIP-39 standard, which is used by Trezor and Keystone.
So if I set up a social recovery option, and then AirGap wallet with all its services ceases to exist 5-10 years from now, how can I regain access to my funds if the scheme doesn't work with other hardware/software wallets? If you adopt the SSKR standard at one point in the future, does it affect all previously configured social recovery setups? Those created before your adoption of SSKR or whatever other model you decide to go for?
3647  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Do Hardware wallet Manufacturers Ship to PO Boxes or Not? on: November 05, 2022, 08:00:30 AM
At least in the US Keystone does allow shipping to PO Boxes.
The data in the OP is based on what info I got from the customer support of all those companies. Does their online shop allow you to complete the purchase after selecting a PO box or is there an error or other type of notification that hinders it? Do you know what carrier they work with in the US? The information I got off the Ledger support team was that their packages in the USA are shipped via DHL, and they don't deliver to PO boxes. So it's a restriction set by the carrier company and not the device manufacturer.

Also, they use opennode.com for BTC payments and Coinbase Commerce for altcoins and also BTC.
I got redirected to Coinbase Commerce when I imitated a fake purchase just to see where it would take me. It's the first time I hear payments are also processed by opennode.com. Are those Lightning payments maybe or is it a geographical thing that determines which payment processor a customer is redirected to?
3648  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: 15% discount on Trezor hardware wallets on: November 05, 2022, 07:46:26 AM
Still, I am holding onto the hope their model T could decrease in retail price once their new generation of cold wallets gets released to the market, perhaps it is a bit foolish of me to think that way though.
It's not foolish. I am thinking the same thing. It's to be expected in all niches (not just hardware wallets) that whenever a new model of a brand comes out, the price decreases for the older models. Since Trezor T is a good wallet (but overpriced), many could jump at the chance to get it once the prices drop after the release of the new-generation of their hardware wallets. But there are no signs that this could happen soon, therefore, patience is required.
3649  Other / Meta / Re: [POLL] Should there be a 🍀 BTC AIRDROP 🍀 to Bitcointalk Merit Sources on: November 05, 2022, 07:36:42 AM
I'm sorry 'bout my misinterpretations; yes, I accept the fact that I misunderstood you. I can assure you that - that wasn't intentional.
Don't worry about it. It was funny to see you freak out for a moment though.

They are already given the sort of unlimited amount of smerits to distribute (which other normal users may dream of
All merit sources have a precise number of source merits they get every month. So the numbers are precisely defined, even though they are substantial for some. But there are also those who think they should have more, like The Pharmacist who has publicly stated a request to get more many times. No idea how much he gets, but one could speculate by looking at the data posted in The most generous users giving merits.

Why not give rewards to those who receive a lot of merits? Those are also the real persons who are really helpful to the community who help the community with their informative and knowledgeable posts.
Very often those are the same people. Many belong to the group of the biggest senders and receivers, most trusted, part of DT, staff, etc. That's why on the surface it looks like the game is rigged, but those making the accusations don't see the contributions and effort those "game riggers" and "fraudsters" made and still make to get where they are.
3650  Other / Archival / Re: I don't want to buy cheap bitcoins, I want to buy expensive ones on: November 04, 2022, 10:04:44 AM
The herd mentality is a weird one. Because history has a tendency to repeat itself, we are going to see the same all over again. Most people don't want to bother with an investment like bitcoin in times where it doesn't look good. In the last months, it looks really bad. As soon as it recovers, and it will, public opinion will change. The media is a driving force whether we like it or not. When bitcoin gets some publicity in mass media with news reports talking about how the prices have gone up 40-50 percent in the last month or two, that's when the public begins investing expecting even better returns.
3651  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: investment in bitcoin should be short term or long term. on: November 04, 2022, 09:32:27 AM
if investing in bitcoin is it better short term or long term??? but in my opinion, long-term investment is better, but what do you think?
Since you are considering investing, I assume you have an exit strategy. There is surely a goal or a magic number in terms of profit you have in your head. Depending on how fast the market moves to that zone determines the end of your investment plan.

If you are considering putting in $10.000 with the aim to profit another $10k and take home $20k, just wait until the market gets there. Maybe in a year, maybe in 5. So, long-term or short term doesn't really matter. But if you are considering speculating just to see what will happen in 3 or 5 years from now, just invest an amount you are comfortable with losing and leave it alone.

Life circumstances can change rapidly. When you are in dire need of money, selling at a loss doesn't seem like a bad idea.

Evo da ja pokušam.

Praviš se glup. Bitcoin ne postoji. To je atribucija brojeva. Nema stavarnog i opipljivog resursa.

I understand that you'd like the idea for some personal gain, yunno but again, 750btcs could get exhausted if there's not an immediate means to rejuvenate cash for that minimal expenses. I'm not against you or any merit source getting paid ( who knows if I'd become one someday?)? but this is a community that we all would wish -- EARNESTLY -- for her well being; pulling out SATs unnecessarily isn't an actual factor to guarantee the later process,(even if I were a Merit-source, I won't actually support that.......it wouldn't mean that I don't need those few bucks but, ......we need to grow)
I am surprised by you to be honest. How did you manage to interpret my reply as a sign that I want to get paid for being a merit source when the post you quoted begins with:

As a merit source, I voted no.

And a few sentences later I said:
It can't really be considered "work" that deserves monetary reward.

I thought you were better than that Sandra, and then you go and say something like that. Smiley

3655  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why Bitcoin is the most Preferred Choice on: November 03, 2022, 02:48:31 PM
2. No KYC required for investment
This is debatable and depends on how you acquire your coins. Decentralized exchanged don't require KYC. Face-to-face meetings also. Mining also has no KYC. But if we switch our focus to centralized exchanges, OTC trading, or certain investment platforms, it becomes harder to avoid KYC.

3. Digital and sucured form of asset and currency
Depends on each person and the way they handle the keys that secures their coins. On a protocol-level, it can be highly secure. In reality, it depends on the knowledge of skillset of the bitcoin owner.

4. High profitability with less risk
Bitcoin, just like the whole crypto market is very volatile. Investing in bitcoin has proven to be a profitable investment long-term. But in the short-term that is not always the case. And there is risk involved in all investments, especially the volatile ones.

5. No inflation tolerance or price manipulation
Bitcoin is susceptible to market manipulation and big whales and bag holders can steer the price in their favored direction. If you add media influence and policy changes to the mix, you get a pretty dangerous combination. No inflation tolerance, really? Should we look at the charts for the last 3 months? The one for the last 6 months isn't better either.
3656  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is this not shilling but information sharing? on: November 03, 2022, 02:26:15 PM
Quote
The following behaviour shall, inter alia, be considered as market manipulation:

taking advantage of occasional or regular access to the traditional or electronic media by voicing an opinion about a crypto-asset, while having previously taken positions on that crypto-asset, and profiting subsequently from the impact of the opinions voiced on the price of that crypto-asset, without having simultaneously disclosed that conflict of interest to the public in a proper and effective way.
It is attempted market manipulation. The obvious question would be, do the same rules apply to other financial markets? Let's say I am a big-time influencer heavily invested in Nvidia, and it's in my interest to see it's stock price increase. If I make a review video of my most recent Nvidia card and how great it is, which causes the price of the shares to increase by 5% overnight, and 10% in total over the course of a week, is that also attempted market manipulation? It should be, but I guess it depends on who does it.

Maybe I will go to prison if I do it with Nvidia. But promoting Pfizer and how good their products are would make me a socially responsible hero in the eyes of many.
3657  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Trezor, Ledger, and Passport: The TOS and Privacy Policy Battles on: November 03, 2022, 02:01:44 PM
Then how about those who can't afford to rent an old/used property just for receiving address purposes and those who cannot use PO address?
Very few people do that. It would make sense if you are ordering a lot of goods to make it worth it. If you are in fact renting and paying for the property. Alternatively, if there is an old and abandoned house somewhere, you could have the package shipped to its location. In both cases, the courier probably needs a signature from you, so someone would have to be there at the time of delivery. In some countries, the courier delivers the package to a neighbor or nearby business owner and informs you where you can pick it up.

Some other things you could do is have the package ordered and delivered to a cafe or a restaurant, for example. That's easy if you know the people who work there and you arrange it with them to pick up your stuff if you don't mind them seeing what you have ordered. I think someone recommended ordering to the reception desk of a big hotel or local company as well.
3658  Other / Off-topic / Re: Is this not shilling but information sharing? on: November 03, 2022, 10:01:42 AM
The essence of the idea is that the influencers will need to declare if they were paid for the promotion. If they were but they don't mention it in their video campaigns/shills, that could get them fined.

This won't change much, and it opens new opportunities to play with the viewers. If I was an influencer, I would say: this is a sponsored video. I was hired by *insert name* to post this content because I believe in its long term future. I see it reaching the stars, bla, bla, bla. DYOR, etc., etc. I think I have done enough not to get myself in trouble with regulators and I can now continue with my shilling campaign.
3659  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Would this Lead to the Mass Adoption of Bitcoin? on: November 03, 2022, 09:38:28 AM
I don't think so. I would personally never pay a dime to have the option to use a social media profile the way I want to. They benefit from their users more than the users earn from them. It's free which means you are the customer. If he made such a decision, it could backfire on him and people could start leaving Twitter in protest for not wanting to further fill his greedy pockets.

And besides, Twitter is not exclusive for crypto enthusiasts. You can't introduce bitcoin or crypto as the only payment method if in the future it becomes mandatory to pay for the verified badge. I am sure there are more of those that have nothing and don't want anything to do with crypto than those that do. And that bigger group will need traditional payment methods.

So it might be news-worthy, but it's not going to be something that will cause mass adoption or have a significant impact on the price.
