381  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the downsides to 8MB blocks? on: September 03, 2015, 03:48:12 AM
A good argument against the bitcoiners that demand 1MB blocksize because "Miners have to be rewarded" is the electricity that goes away with that. I recently read an article about a study saying that currently 1! bitcoin transaction costs so much electricity like 1.75 normal US households use in a day.

We can't let all these miners survive artificially by raising the fees. The amount of miners need to be trimmed down and the bitcoin security be more power efficient. That was always happening and it should and can't be held up artificially. The bitcoin network would be still very very secure with less miners.

Unfortunately miners are the mighty ones in the game. We only can hope that the sane one are the biggest ones. And that they see the need of bitcoin adoption for getting future profits.

That is a sick amount of power... So mining one block consumes the power of a full city? That is insane and not sustainable, especially if it keeps rising...

I do agree that's a lot to secure this level of Bitcoin transactions as of today. But I also read that current amount of hashing power is enough to secure even a 100 fold increase in the transaction number and user number. So to say, if we would have 100 million users, the network would be secured with today's hash rate.

That's why I don't understand the opponents of the block size increase. Bitcoin has to scale in order to be sustainable in the long run! For that we need bigger blocks!

but WHO will ever be able to download 8MB

8 FUCKING MASSIVE MEGA BYTES

this will surely make minning WAY more centralized

8 Megabytes per 10 Minutes and you think we will get in problems with that? What kind of internet connection do you have in order to fear that?

On top... you know that the current blocks are not even filled full. They only are full when these spammers act. And there is no reason to assume that suddenly, with 8 Megabyte Blocks, these blocks will be full. Where should all these transactions come from?
382  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the downsides to 8MB blocks? on: September 03, 2015, 03:43:10 AM
it will take a lot of time until the bitcoin network will have enough adoption to fill 8 MB Blocks.

It won't take a lot of time until DoS 'stress tests' fill up 8 MB blocks.

Sure. And will you pay that? You realize the cost of the recent spam attacks? And those were only some KB. You speak about filling up a lot MB with spam. I wonder if you will find someone who will do the spamming.

And of course i referred to the natural adoption of bitcoin that will fill the blocks. Spamming won't happen since it does not make sense then anymore in any way for the spammer.

for now this is a non existing problem.

 Roll Eyes

I guess you only misinterpreted. Read above.

Quote
Miners are struggling with blocks far smaller than 750KB blocks and resorting to SPV mining
http://lists.linuxfoundation.org/pipermail/bitcoin-dev/2015-August/010283.html

The existing problem is that you don't know WTF you're talking about.

Or... maybe... you don't have a clue what i'm talking about.

Your link, by the way, is all fine and so but there is already a walkaround since ages: http://bitcoinrelaynetwork.org/

I would SPV-Mine too when i would own a big farm. Though i would validate the previous block once i received all data. Then act accordingly. Simply because it would be a little bit faster. That doesn't mean that the advantage is so big that it really makes a big difference.
383  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: NSA KNOWS on: September 03, 2015, 03:31:40 AM
i doubt the government is spending the money and resources just to spy on regular people and watching what they do with bitcoin.

Why not? It's pretty interesting and easy for them. I mean they don't have it that easy with fiat. They can't follow it around so easy but they can follow bitcoins.

An i think they know bitcoins potential. They would be stupid not to take care. In fact i know they are not stupid since, i believe gavin did that, some years ago he held a meeting with the CIA that wanted to get informed about that new currency. Surely they will track.

And you say they don't care about the normal user. Why not? It is so easy and so few data... and if it is easy then they will observe it. Just in case.

If they will use that data to blame you against IRS, that is doubtable.

Most of these agencies work isn't to spy ordinary citizens, they try to spy other agencies and governments so the USA can have the upper hand.

That's right for sure but since edward snowden's revelations we know that the nsa is collecting data from everyone in a really big scale. And it is not that they have to spend much work or time on it. They have computer and software and practically everything goes automatically.

So yes, they spy other agencies and governments but on the way... without much manual effort, they collect data about us all.
384  Other / Politics & Society / Re: CEO who raised workers’ minimum pay to $70K hits predictable problems on: September 03, 2015, 03:28:22 AM
Interesting. Are prices for cosmetic surgery very cheap too?

What i wonder is why should someone go through the trouble to get a doctor only to earn nothing at the end. Do you mean it only comes from a minority that was NOT discriminated there?

Surgeries in the former Soviet-bloc nations only cost around one-tenth of doing the same in the United States. Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus.etc offer quality medical care, at affordable costs. Russia is a little bit expensive, but the quality is good.

There is a good demand for medical seats in Georgian and Belorussian universities, as being a doctor carries a lot of prestige in the society.

And regarding discrimination, whatever the Soviets would like to claim, the former USSR was a deeply xenophobic society. People with Asiatic facial features (such as Azeris and Uzbeks, composing one-sixth of the population) were discriminated in education, military.etc. According to researchers, the only reason why Armenia could beat Azerbaijan during the 1993 Nagorno-Karabakh war was due to the fact that the Azeris (an Asiatic Muslim people) were not allowed in to the combat battalions of the Soviet Army. Even now, the Russian Army has fixed maximum intake quotas for the Muslim groups. Around 10% of the young people in Russia are Muslim. But only around 2% of the soldiers are Muslims.

Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus... i will keep that names in my mind. Though i think ukraine is not the safest place nowadays. Might be there are safe places but generally i would fear that safe places turn to unsafe places suddenly when iam there. Tongue

Well, in communist countries education tends to be very cheap or free and can be of excellent quality, the problem is that there is no place for this people to work.

[b]Don't steal my quotes! Tongue[/b]

And yes, i know. Education should be free everywhere ideally. But even if it is. You have to invest a lot of work and time and mostly you don't have much money on the way. Maybe you even have to work while studying.

So it is quite troublesome. I guess only idealistic persons would go through all that only to earn practically nothing at the end.

I don't think that character cares. That's class 101 on forum etiquette...

I'm not sure what you wanted to say but i referred to my quote coming out like it was you who wrote it. Smiley

It was a joke, just in case you didn't notice. Smiley

Edit: Ah ok, you referred to the one who made the error.
386  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: NYDFS Receives 22 BitLicense Applications! Is this helpful BTC in near future? on: September 03, 2015, 03:23:32 AM
It will not be helpful for bitcoin as a whole. But there is a reason why those companies apply for it. And it is not because the new york market is so big that it would make sense to do that. It is simply cutthroat competition. They think they can dominate the market and push all other players out. That's probably why some of these companies pushed for that.

I'm not so sure their plan will work out.
387  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Local bitcoins is a toxic environment on: September 03, 2015, 02:21:18 AM
Oh okay, I wasn't aware that selling to victims of ransomware was illegal. I do hate ransomware with a burning passion though, and I feel incredibly sorry for anyone that's affected by it.
Coin.mx was a HUGE exchange here in America. Prosecuters had absolutely no dirt on them besides 1 incident where a lady bought bitcoin for ransomware from their site, not even a large order. They used that single ransomware incident to spin the entire case into "coinmx is providing bitcoin for illegal activity". They literally had nothing else on them as far as supplying illegal activity. It's absurd... they took all their assets too so what should be an easy case to win is probably not winnable.

The united states law system is so fucked up. Unbelieveable. So when the little girl of a friend of yours gets kidnapped and you provide the fiat money to help him then you will go to jail because you tried to help your friend.

I will never live in the US... it is way too strange there.

But i think the coin.mx guys should be able to win this case. I mean a good lawyer could convince a jury easily i think.
388  Economy / Services / Re: Coinoindex.com signature campaign! on: September 03, 2015, 02:05:49 AM
Today should be payment day, right? I sent a pm to the owner since i had switched to member before i started posting for this week. Or before the timeframe started i wore the new signature.

And since i was a jr. member before the form didn't work. Now it shows no new applicants but i was enrolled before manually counted.

Payment is usually made at night for Europe timezone, afternoon for America timezone.
Don't worry about enrollment, they can manually add you in bot system.
That's absolutely right Smiley Thank you

Linuld, yes, I remember about you. You have been added  Wink

Thank you. It works. The form recognizes me now. And i received the payment. Smiley

390  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Hearn's Worst Case Scenario: Checkpoints in XT to "ignore the longest chain" on: September 01, 2015, 02:58:54 PM

"The worst case scenario is the majority ... the economic majority ... is in favor but the hash power, the mining majority is not. That would be a very messy situation for bitcoin."

You do realised that even by this utopic view, the logic behind this is very flawed. It's completely ignoring miners, refusing to acknowledge that they are a significant chunk of 'the economic majority'. And aside of that, Mike Hearn has numerous times proven that he simply doesn't care about the neutrality of bitcoin as a developer. He's implied that getting rid of the Chinese miners is a reasonable plan to enforce if they disagree with him.
He did not say that he would get rid of the Chinese miners if they disagreed with him. He was instead referring to a situation where the majority of users and financial powers mainly in the west came to a disagreement about a fundamental issue with the miners in the east. Remember this is a hypothetical worst case scenario. What if the majority of the miners decided to increase the block limit? However the majority of the users and financial powers are against the change, that might be a situation where us Bitcoiners would go against the majority of the mining power and cause a fork. Under this worst case scenario what Mike Hearn is suggesting is actually reasonable. I do not believe this could ever happen as described since miners would never be incentivized to do such a thing. Keep in mind that Hearn even said that this would wreck Bitcoin so it is not like he takes this lightly. He would also require the consent of the economic majority anyway in order to even do such a thing. It is however a very controversial thing to say, I will not deny that.

Thank you for explaining. That sounds in fact way more reasonable than the Checkpoints accusation. I can follow him here though i guess it is a very theoretical thing only. I mean it already starts with "who is the majority of users"? He can't determine that i think.
391  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Purse.io - Bitcoin Amazon Marketplace - Save ~10-25% on Amazon Wishlist on: September 01, 2015, 02:52:44 PM
I just purchased some things with purse, using 15% discount, it didn't take too long for my order to be accepted by someone, just 1 day. So far the only disadvantage that i see is that sometimes the buyers of the items take too long to provide tracking information on the items.

I think some buyers are concerned about re-routing scams so they do not provide the tracking until its delivered to show proof of delivery.

I ended up losing a few BTC on Purse (buying BTC) since I have had a handful of users say they haven't received package, although tracking shows delivered, or no tracking (some 3rd party sellers don't post) but no return.. Purse tends to side with the receipients and Amazon is strict about that, make the claim more than a few times and they will hold/close your account.. I'm tired of the bullshit Purse threw at me over a number of transactions and the apparent assumption the buyer is telling the truth, over 200 TX without a single negative feedback but I am staying away for now.

I'll add to that, some of the gift cards I purchased on Purse a couple of months (purchased dozens) ago have been flagged as invalid, downside is Amazon rarely tells you which ones,'still fighting that problem now, lost a few more BTC that way.. Purse made a good move in disallowing purchases of them now, but it sure provides some insight into a set of users on the site..

Sounds bad. Often enough items don't reach without tracking. And purse then refunds the buyer. But with tracking? That doesn't sound right. I mean the amazon seller has no reason to not sell the actual product. And when there is proof that the package reached then purse should definitely not refund.
392  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] Purse.io - Bitcoin Amazon Marketplace - Save ~10-25% on Amazon Wishlist on: September 01, 2015, 02:50:47 PM
Please check this reddit post when a guy had trouble with police since he bought in amazon through purse.io
https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/2po40d/since_my_house_is_being_searched_right_now_small/

In reading the thread, it seems that was a pretty unique situation and in Europe as well. I have not heard any issues since and none in the USA.

I believe that was the case where the buyer had his hous searched and purse.io acted fast providing lawyers and so on.

A day after that they revealed that incident and claimed they made a fund of 10k USD to provide services for future cases of that kind.

394  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Should we kick more people off welfare? on: September 01, 2015, 02:01:22 PM
Kicking people off welfare isn't enough. All welfare programs should be terminated. They were invented by Bismarck and later promoted by Mussolini. Both fascists looking for supporters. Welfare programs are the greatest inequalities in the world. Nigerians or Ethiopians do not have access to any kind of welfare, and yet they manage to survive. Better than that, their population is growing fast. Sorry to point it out but this proves that the average African is much smarter than the average first world guy on welfare.

Welfare programs are also a strong reason for Africans to immigrate to rich countries, which close their borders very precisely not to let foreigners gain access to welfare. Welfare and borders are the same thing: restrictions to freedom.

Then be prepared to a huge social unrest that will kill the country for sure. You definitely can't take that away.

And every party trying that will be dead instantly.

And yes... Ehtiopians are the big example right? I guess you don't care about all the people that die there because of hunger and missing medicine. I doubt you really want that for your country.
395  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Should we kick more people off welfare? on: September 01, 2015, 01:57:42 PM
There's a lot of research that shows that people on welfare will not look for or engage in work if the pay for that work doesn't exceed the welfare. We need to match the two...welfare should be paired back to not provide more than minimum wages or minimum wages should increase. The problem with minimum wages increasing is that it motivates prices (and the cost of living) to increase as well.

If welfare isn't linked specifically to the objective of getting people that can work back to work, it will never be successful.

Of course disabilities and addictions need to be handled differently but there should be much more surveillance over the appropriate use of government money...some rights should go away when one welfare.

In the Netherlands one gets around $ 1000 welfare if you are single and $ 1500 welfare if you have kids. As a plus you get around $ 90 for healthcare and a large chunk of your rent paid by the state. That does not mean one can sit on his or hers lazy arse. You have to proof that you look for a job and you have to do something back like cleaning the streets or help out at a school or retirement home.

In NED, what are the income qualifications or unemployment qualifications to receive the welfare? I'm curious where the country sets that bar.

You can't simply lower the welfare in order to make bad jobs more attractive. The welfare should be a minimum that is needed to life and take part on life. At least in my country that is the case. Though when you take into account that your rent for the flat is paid and your medicals then it is easily more than the average job.

Most people still want to work because they want to feel useful. They want to do something with their life. Maybe we need a change there that these parasites does not look like the heroes anymore but instead like parasites. The problem is, politicians already tried that. And it can't be done without blaming legit persons that can't work.

It really is one of the big problems of mankind that has no easy solution i think.
396  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Should we kick more people off welfare? on: September 01, 2015, 01:51:17 PM
Here where I live in Texas it has become a source of great income for some, you'll hear talk of people aspiring to "get a crazy check" meaning disability which then gives them a monthly check, free healthcare, and food stamps. After receiving disability, the person is then able to visit one of the many shady psychiatrists operating here providing this service as it has become big business - the "patient" will receive suboxone (@ 90) which they can sell for up to $20 apiece, adderall (@60-90) which will go for @ $10 apiece, and valium or xanax (@ 30-60) - the prescriptions are free to fill with Medicaid/Medicare so that alone is an extra $2500 (or about that amount) combined with their monthly government check. Commercials run constantly on television here for disability lawyers as it has become a big business, it is amazing how people have manipulated the system and are profiting from it yet some in actual need suffer.

Wow, sounds crazy. And the government isn't acting against? I mean at least the police could follow the selling of medicine. And the normal people should push to stop that things.

I doubt that all politicians are that corrupt in your country that nothing can be done.
397  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Should we kick more people off welfare? on: September 01, 2015, 01:48:25 PM
Long-term welfare payments should be limited to the disabled and the elderly. Able-bodied adults under the age of 60 should be banned from receiving welfare checks for more than 3 months continuously. Canada is facing a severe shortage of manpower in some sectors (esp. masons, woodcutters.etc). The government should give them job training and compel them to join the workforce.

Then people without food would do what? Starting to steal like in old times?

The goverments plans to solve these things are so poor, it's not funny. They train people in stupid things on jobs that pay so low that it is pocket money. Since they can't simply create jobs that aren't needed.

If it would be so easy to create jobs then every country would do so. If you say these people have to do it somehow then you will create big unrest only.

There is no such easy solution.
398  Other / Politics & Society / Re: What is WWF's position on trophy hunting on: September 01, 2015, 01:44:55 PM
And guess where the former Spanish King Juan Carlos went hunting? In Africa and he is still member of WWF. Our king at least hunts boar and other game (which are tame and fed by humans) but Juan Carlos did not mind shooting Elephants.

In some of the African nations, the elephant population has gone out of control. This is damaging the vegetation, thereby making things difficult for a number of the endangered species. Countries such as South Africa are planning to cull a part of the wild elephant population. So there is nothing wrong in hunting one or two elephants.

Though it's hard to decide if you really shoot the elephants since, at least in india, the humans are guilty for a big part. They take away land from the elephants constantly so that they have less and less space. It leads to elephants going wild and there was even a case described where an elephant started to eat humans.

I think they are somewhat alike to humans emotionally. And humans start to get crazy too sometimes.

I'm not sure if the population was growing so much too or if it only was the take-away of elephant land.
399  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [NXT] Nxt - Official Thread on: September 01, 2015, 01:38:57 PM
Regarding the hacking of brainwallets at DEFCON 23 and the death of brainwallet.io, how safe are nxt-addresses when they had their first output?

When brainwallets are hacked that easily then it sounds risky. Though those nxt addresses only can hold something of value once their security was updated with an incoming transaction, right?

So is the brainwallet a risk or not?
400  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "Why I'm releasing a brainwallet cracker at DEFCON 23" on: September 01, 2015, 01:36:44 PM
I think a good way to beat this bad behaviour of some bitcoiners would be that a hacker (not cracker) would check out all possible combinations, create a huge wallet with it and everytime he finds someone is using such a stupid brainwallet then he might withdraw, let's say 0.00001337 Bitcoins. The user would be warned and can push his coins.

Of course there is the risk that a cracker finds the same coins and withdraws them. But there is no way for the hacker to withdraw all and give it back to the real owner of the address.
