41  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Metal Printer on: January 08, 2014, 04:28:20 PM
Back to the physical coins issue again.

Can anyone point out a metal printer for less than 2k USD? I saw the Indiegogo gig, but it's ended and I'm not sure how fine the edges would turn out. I've dealt with metal clay and would rather just deal with a metal printer that doesn't shrink or require secondary hardening. I'm also looking for good tolerances to avoid those mm "bitmap" looking edges. This would also help avoid the breaking and design of dies.

..
The hurdle that I just can NOT overcome, mostly from markm's comments in other sections, is how to give the buyer the confidence that the wallet and private key are secure. I just don't see a way to guarantee that to the buyer. If I were a scammer, I could potentially just keep all the details and cash it in at any time. Maybe it would have to be a partial key, but then that requires the user to do some work on their end and I want to keep it simple. The value of the metal itself would of course be attractive...silver or gold would have their own value built in, but I'd love to tackle the cold storage plus coin concept. It's very attractive to me in promoting a coin. It wouldn't be Casascius, of course.

That is the tough one. Is there any way to instead make a machine that would print out the parts of a physical coin? Or maybe a just a kit with a blank coin and a security strip.

Fuzzy and I discovered we wanted to do similar things with a physical coin. It seems like silver or aluminum have lower melting points, but unless the demand is there, the cost of getting the equipment and dies are extremely prohibitive. IMO, it seems like a test run with an independent professional mint would be a better use of resources.

But yes, a press and dies are possible and quite easy to come by, relatively speaking. It would need professional engraving anyway and then if they die breaks, well, then there's that repeated expense.

If a project like this could prove itself, I think Fuzzy would be a willing participant.

I think various methods were worked out whereby people could somehow double-blindedly create a coin. None of the people would have the whole private key, or something like that. Such thigns were much discussed over the years.

Due to the nature of your posts, I have a great deal of respect for your comments.

I'm not asking for a treatise, but could you expand on that comment a little?
44  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Custom Coin on: January 03, 2014, 09:18:30 PM
That is a very interesting concept, would love to see a mock up.  I would definitely be interested.

Part of the expense is design. I would have to ask the engraver to submit drafts and then submit them to the Devcoin community for comment.

I checked with 3M and a few others for security, but my initial quantity is so low, that I would have to settle with the coin cover with a security strip.

The hurdle that I just can NOT overcome, mostly from markm's comments in other sections, is how to give the buyer the confidence that the wallet and private key are secure. 45  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Custom Coin on: January 03, 2014, 09:08:59 PM
Just curious...

Is there any interest in a physical Devcoin?

I had considered this before but don't want to get stuck with an enormous inventory.

Once concept that is attractive to me: Two pieces, screw together, with cold storage inside in the amount of 10K. Comes in a transparent coin case with a protective security tape on the case.

Not committing to it yet, just gauging interest.

Hmm... What about coinpayments? lol

I don't know. Public vote maybe? I haven't seen one put out yet.

I was just really trying to get Jude to answer a question about a bounty. I really didn't expect a firestorm. I kind of doubt CP will pick it up, but hey, DVC made it.

EDIT: CP (maybe even yourself) said do it online through the request form. Not like I have any sort of clout with any exchanges anyway. Like I said, didn't expect Jude to go all crazy.

Well vote will be coming soon, so just watch out for that. As far as what coin will and wont be added, all depends on what the community votes on.

Awesome, brotha! I love your service. Very nice to have such a variety! Truly cool.

Are you in favor of me registering devto.me as a domain and trying to rework what I created before? If I can find a willing participant, I would be happy to hand of most if not all of the rights for the benefit of creating a forum that fits your guidelines.

EDIT: It's in my shopping cart right now and I'm ready to hit enter to so I can grab it.

Whoa, waitasec, are you suggesting you make a closed soruce forum?

Surely the bounty is for open source?

Also I think Unthinkinbit already secured the doman he wants the forum to be run on?

-MarkM-

I guess I'm way out of my league. I thought the domain purchase would have to be on someone's nickle anyway and I'm willing to do it. I though devto.me was fitting. Perhaps not.

I'm basically of the opinion to go for it. The source is open. It's all SMF. And I would think that those here would have access enough to fiddle around with whatever they wanted anyway. But again, I may be way off target and need some readjustment.

Again, it's just me getting excited and wanting to get something going. All the talk is great, but I want to see some results.

Thanks for the note. If I get up the courage to reactive the site (which I killed in a fit of pity), then I will happily give you the full goods to the site to do as you will. I just want it to work. Yeah, the bounties are great and make me a little jealous, but hey, I'm mostly a writer. So if you want me to pull a resurrection of the material, I would be happy to hand it over.
Good to see the collaboration, but jealous? You earned 120 shares from writing last round, way more than anyone else I believe. You worked for it so that's not me having a dig at you as I've explained before - I'd say that to the fabled queen of sheba - but the incentive structure is generally quite reversed so I don't think pity is in order here.

Novacadian: For some background, there was a forum created in the past that I linked to, but it also tripped at the same problem. However I'm not sure if everybody's been aware of those requirements so should have been clearer if they weren't. I also just want it to work as there's growing interest in devcoin and this thread is hard to navigate so if you guys can make it happen that would be great.

No, not at all. It was a knee jerk reaction. Another dev at an exchange we are all familiar with backed out on a deal with me at the same time, so I killed everything. Childish. But at least I'm admitting it.

And I am very appreciative of what Devtome allows me to do. I have two more projects in the works, one of which is my first foray into sci-fi, which I really think is simply awesome.

It's all good. I'm feeling sorry for myself. Not your problem.

Not at all, eeh. It seems to me that you have a very valid point. The incentives for programming, to my way of thinking, are vastly outweighed compared to the incentives to add to the DevTomes for example. There is no risk like the one you had taken.

If you are not doing it for the joy of programming then one would be constantly looking over their shoulder for someone, like me, coming up behind you.

If my email wrapper finally meets the criteria of the bounty (working at the moment yet not very pretty) then perhaps we can collaborate on the other aspects of the bounty as well as some sharing in the admin responsibilities. Open Source to me is cooperation not competition and it would not make me feel very good should the rug be pulled out from under you by me.

Let's see if my rug is not pulled out first; then if not we can talk more in PM how to finish things up at that time in a cooperative manner.

I would also like to add that the bounty regarding the SMF forum was completed with steps two and three. I was not able to create an internal email system other than PM. But I did create black lists and the ability to create and administer forum admin and mods. Just sayin'.

I felt rather put off after working the issues, adding the appropriate tweeks and then being told that the bounty was not able to be applied because I had skipped over the email system. It seems like with all that work that someone with more experience could come in and adjust the email option.
I think the point was that the email step was the difficult coding part from the onset. Anyway, I'd like to say that although I appreciate there are different perspectives on a forum, Fuzzy did create one http://devcointalk.org/ and it gets interest and posts. A few of us try to field and answer queries but it would be great if more people could help out. I hope there's a conclusion to the issue - whoever and however - but in the interim it seems stupid to be largely ignoring people who come along with interest in devcoin. It exists and surely we can worry about migrating the userbase when there's something to migrate them to.

It's all good. I'm feeling sorry for myself. Not your problem.

I've created an online ticker-type website for devcoin against the dollar for the chart bounty.
Quote from: Devtome
18 shares for a chart which shows the price of devcoins in USD. The chart should show prices from at least 3 months in the past.
http://dvcticker.bugs3.com/

I am wondering how I can automatically create a javascript chart or excel file to record the prices hourly or daily. (e.g. the chart automatically updates each hour based on site data)  I will give 5 shares from the bounty if you can assist me!  (maybe more, too!)  Smiley

Funny timing...I've been playing with Excel and importing various exchange information into them so I can determine a good arb.

One solution:

1. In Excel (I use the most recent Office) click on Data on the toolbar.
2. On the left, click "From Web" and enter the URL of an exchange. I've not been able to import some sites, like Coinex (no DVC, but a good example) and mcxNOW (now dead to DVC). Every other DVC exchange that I know of works fine (cryptsy, crypto-trade, cryptocoincharts, vircurex). Cycle through the prompts you're given.
3. To organize, choose an empty cell and use the following formulas:
 a. To retrieve the ticker symbol "=LEFT(Cryptsy!A15,3)" [LEFT tells Excel to start from the left of the cell in tab "Cryptsy" starting in cell A15 and responds with the first 3 characters.]
 b. To retrieve text from the middle "=MID('BTC-e'!A24,5,3)" [Here I'm reading a mid character, from sheet BTC-e, cell A24, starting with the 5th digit, returning 3 characters. BTC-e data pulls differently than Cryptsy and Coinex.]
 c. To retrieve the last price "=RIGHT(Cryptsy!A15,10)" [Returns the leftmost 10 characters.]

After adding the formulas, cut and paste them into a different tab. I just created tabs for the exchanges and then BTC, LTC, DVC, etc. The reason is that when you refresh your data, anything else on that sheet will be purged. So that's why you see my examples above with tab names instead of just cell names.

After doing the above steps, you can see all the prices in a convenient location representing the different exchanges at a glance. You can set refresh to auto or manual. You *can* save it as an html or pdf output, but it won't keep your formulas.

Let me know if I need to clarify anything.

Just a reminder that I have been working on creating user level works arounds for creating their own tracking mechanisms.

Do we all need to upgrade to this new client?

I see Round 30 has begun but no payouts yet.

You dont need to it should be compatible with old clients.

Thanks.

I reported it as spam/troll. Ridiculous.

EDIT: The Mod has deleted that enormous picture of CatCoin. Thank you, admin folks.
57  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Earning Referral Credit from Exchanges on: December 27, 2013, 03:56:42 AM
Think of referrals as a way to permanently tip another user that has helped you. You can earn a minute percentage of fees/points for folks you refer, but they must use your referral code when they sign up.

1. Cryptsy.

If anyone would like to trade DVC at Cryptsy and hasn't signed up yet, please consider using my referral code https://www.cryptsy.com/users/register?refid=46 to sign up.

You can also enter my referral ID ceb9475ab6f51ade79b2fbee2dcbc059fe0b9159 if you don't have anyone filled in to that field yet.

Disclosure: I would ideally receive a Cryptsy Points for trading activity that you perform. I'm not sure how much or even if they can be used for anything yet.

2. Vircurex.

My referral URL is https://vircurex.com/welcome/index?referral_id=991-14430. Please consider signing up for Vircurex if you have not done so thus far. In my opinion, it is the best place to buy and sell DVC.

3. Crypto-Trade.

My personal referral link is https://crypto-trade.com/ref/eeharris.

I would encourage everyone to share their information or perhaps unthinkingbit would allow us to post our referral links on our Devtome pages under the Tips section.

EDIT: I apologize if this is considered panhandling or hoboing. I think all the Devtomers should be supporting each other with this feature.

WINNER! Congrats to cyke64. Your DVC is on its way. Congrats for participating. If anyone would like to see more of these hunts, please tell me. My theory is that it is a way to get participants to dig into existing DVC related files and sites. Familiarity breeds DVC!
