401  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Bank pays interest ? O.o on: June 23, 2011, 07:16:46 PM
I'm going to vote total scam. They have nothing to invest the bitcoins into to get you interest. Selling them for another currency (in an attempt to create interest) would be too risky. I don't see how they can do what they say. I could be wrong.
402  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitoption Status Thread on: June 23, 2011, 06:48:40 PM
THe expired option are now correctly gone from the "my contracts" section, but my funds are still in escrow. I have an extra 4 BTC and $10 being held in escrow compared to what I should, all from freshly expired options.
403  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Default encryption for wallet.dat on: June 23, 2011, 12:46:47 PM
The developers are already working on this, of course, and it is a priority for the next release.

You can follow their progress here:

Your pool might be rounding to two decimals. I know deepbit does this.
405  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Potential proof that Mt. Gox still has all our bitcoins. on: June 23, 2011, 10:06:18 AM
Wow. I'd be VERY afraid of sending 424k BTC, simply because there are so many things that could go wrong. Pasting the wrong receiving address, backing up the receiving wallet in a stupid way, etc. etc. I guess someone had to send then sooner or later, so MtGox can open up their webseite..

But I'm definitely happy MtGox is still in control of those coins. Cheesy

You can't paste the wrong receiving address, each address has a checksum to verify it's correct. You would have to get extremely unlucky to get a different address.

My sources tell me aliens are using our hashing power for nefarious purposes. Make of it what you will. Take it of leave it.
407  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I just had 300 million sperm stolen on: June 23, 2011, 01:05:43 AM
LOL, I was really tempted to post something similar.

My cellphone was just hacked and someone stole a whole case of FUD. I've been saving that FUD, now I'm screwed. This is the end of everything, what am I going to do. If I don't have the FUD, Satan himself is going to kick my ass.
408  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitoption Status Thread on: June 23, 2011, 12:54:29 AM
The expired options aren't gone again.
409  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: my linux box was hacked today and almost 400 BTC were stolen! on: June 23, 2011, 12:46:45 AM
Sounds fishy.

Bumpy bump. I'd really like to see some data.
411  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Are you going to sell your Bitcoins before the difficulty reaches max? on: June 22, 2011, 08:40:29 PM
The maximum difficulty with SHA-256 is 2^224.

If we continue to double every month, as we have been, (which is very unlikely), we would reach it in about 200 months from now or 18 years. At that point the hashing power of the network would be gigantic. The network would use magnitudes more electricity then the entire world uses now.

This is where I got the original information that this could happen in 18 years. Do you think this would be reflected in the price already, or is it a good time to sell before then? A transfer to SHA-512 could cause commotion and a price drop.

The 18 years number requires the network power to _double_ every month. That simply cannot continue without technological advances to match. We will reach a point were the growth of the network stays even with Moore's law, matching technological developments. Which will give us closer to 400 years.

Switching to SHA-512 would be completely painless.

Are you asking if it would be a good time to sell sometime in the next _18_YEARS_? I'm sure there are many more pressing concerns involving the right time to trade bitcoins then reaching "maximum difficulty" which is really a non-issue.

And no, I don't think something 18 to 400 years from now is reflected in the price. How would it be? What would it even matter? At that point there wouldn't even be a reward to block creation it would just be to store transactions.

I would prefer if you didn't use quotes from me to troll.

If we just continue at Moore's law (double every two years), it'll be about 400 years before we reach the maximum difficulty.

And, if that happens, we just switch to SHA-512 which will give us another 400 of exponential growth. This modification would be simple.

And by the way, the "weaknesses" in SHA1 just make it so that someone can hash a little faster with certain algorithms. It would still work for bitcoins, the difficulty would just be a little higher.
413  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Curious - Bitcoin is still beta - why should I invest? on: June 22, 2011, 07:17:53 PM
Hi, I've been reading up on Bitcoin and I think it's a fantastic concept, and would love to invest a bit of money in it, but isn't it still early beta?  Why are people putting money into an early beta version of the coin network?
90% of people here are for speculation. They even do not really need to install the bitcoin client. All they need is mtgox exchange and charts.
There is close to no economy behind bitcoin. Maybe 2% of owners of btc are actually buying anything for their bitcoins.

I am not here for the speculation, and many others, much more than the 10% you give aren't either.

Trolls, trolls, trolls. Run. Hide your children, trolls.
415  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Camp BX Platform in Beta: Margin Trading, Short Selling, and Advanced Orders on: June 22, 2011, 05:02:05 PM
I registered and received my email in plain text!

Please, change that immediately. This is completely insane. Is there any of the exchanges here with at least someone understanding basic security?

Done!  Initial email with passwords was a testnet-only thing, because people tend to choose disposable, forgettable passwords for trials.  We were going to disable it at livenet launch, but have gone ahead and done that now.

"Forgot Password" email will be replaced with a reset-password link later this week.

Thank you,
      Keyur

Isn't the bigger problem that this means your passwords are stored in plain text in the DB?  How else could you email a password?

Indeed, could you please confirm that password will not be stored in plaintext. If you could detail how they are stored that would be best. It is a topical concern considering mt gox.
416  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Curious - Bitcoin is still beta - why should I invest? on: June 22, 2011, 04:01:29 PM
Security in a transaction is different than security in the currency itself. Two different ideas completely. Investing in bitcoin is a speculative investment. You should never invest more in a speculative investment than you can afford to lose completely. There is a good chance bitcoins will never really get off the ground. Some people believe that there is also a good chance that it takes off in a very huge way and investment could make thousand-fold return.

You decide what you believe. No one (sane) on the forum has any interest in convincing you one way or another.
417  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Next difficulty in approx 3 days?? 1,240,416 on: June 22, 2011, 02:07:44 PM
When the reward goes down to 25 it is just like a 100% difficulty increase. It isn't that big a deal. We've had > 85% difficulty increases and it didn't cause people to quit.
418  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: trades over the weekend at Mt Gox were -1.3% not -0.65% on: June 22, 2011, 01:52:40 PM
even if I suck at calculator.

it was happening.

I was being charged 1.3% each trade.

Yeah, I really believe you now. Especially since you've such a great grasp of mathematics and how mt gox takes commission.

when I noticed it I typed "25 minus 0.65%" into google.

the result was different than my logbook, it didn't make sense.

so i typed "25 minus 1.3%" and it matched.

I don't care if you believe me or not.

If Mt. Gox still has the CSV associated with my account I'll show you.

"25 minus 1.3%" gives you the wrong value, you need to type "25 minus 1.3% of 25". So if your story is true, it does not mean that mt gox was charging 1.3%. You just got your numbers wrong.

Honestly, the google thing looks like a bug. It should be able to calculate "25 minus 1.3%" correctly. So it isn't completely your fault.

Did your trades happen to be for 2 btc, because if so then your story checks out, the numbers are just wrong because of google.
419  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: FIX ERROR: "The password for this account is invalid, or this acc.." on: June 22, 2011, 01:46:50 PM
My 10 char password was accepted. It used lower and upper, numbers and symbols.
420  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 500 Ghash/s cracked bitcoin miner responsible for huge increase of Thash/s ? on: June 22, 2011, 01:41:08 PM
If anyone actually installed this, let me be the first to say, you are a moron.

For god's sake, if your wallet is on that computer move your bitcoins ASAP.
