401  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The cost of bitcoin transfers on: April 06, 2022, 09:07:23 AM
I agree with the above posters (the fact that the OP is most likely confused between the actual transaction fee, and the mislabeled profit "fee" payed to a custodial service, or that he uses a wallet that grossly miscalculates the fee).

This being said, i do wanted to point out two things, just in case the OP is using a proper wallet and still thinks the fee is to high:
  • fees are payed to the miner to give them incentive to add your transaction to a block. This is why fees fluctuate heavily over time. If the fee is to high right now, you can always consider waiting a while before moving funds/buying something with BTC. You can also opt-in RBF, so you can pay a lower fee, and bump it when you see your tx isn't getting confirmed
  • It might also be a good idear to read up on the lightning network. Fees for a transaction are very, very low...

In the good old days, i would have agreed 100%. Nowadays (well, the last several years), however, we do see an influx of so-called "bounty-hunters". People that spam twitter, facebook,... with promo for scam tokens just so the creator of said tokens gives them some of the total supply (if they're lucky).

Those people have 0 interest in participating and learning, they just need a space to spam their "bounty reports" so they can get 100 SHITTOKEN in the hope SHITTOKEN ever rises above 0.001 sat/SHITTOKEN.

If you open the patrol page, you can see for yourself that they represent a really big part of what is getting posted... Certainly more than 50% of all posts are made for the sole purpose of bounty hunting... On the other hand, it is very, very, rare to see a bounty hunter come over to the "good side". It is extremely rare that a bounty hunter ever participates in normal discussion, let alone learn something... It happens once in a blue moon, but those cases are really rare.

Just a quick post to see what the fuss is all about...  Grin

EDIT: yay.. 110... i'm average
404  Other / Off-topic / Re: Best present for a crypto trader's Birthday on: March 31, 2022, 12:27:49 PM
A decent hardware wallet in case he/she doesn't already have one? You would be supprised how many traders hold their complete stash right on the exchange (even for longer periods of time).
405  Other / Archival / Re: To clarify the previous post regarding the campaign on: March 31, 2022, 12:23:51 PM
Some context might be needed here... I haven't got the slightest clue what you are talking about.

Your post history shows you pitched an idear about accepting donations, and people just told you you lack the trust of this community. Nobody gave you a red tag, no flags were opened, nobody said they were going to put you on ignore or put you in their trustlist (as a negative trusted person).

Basically, if you were honest, you should grow a thicker skin and continue as if nothing happened. If you were trying to pocket donations for yourself (scam), you were just told (relatively politely) that scammers don't belong on this forum.

By the way: this topic belongs in reputation, not in beginners and help... It also needs a lot of context... And pictures from sites that are not conclusive linked to you are worthless as proof.
406  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Found private keys and weird thing in mail 2013 on: March 30, 2022, 08:46:56 AM
It makes me think of an old blockchain.com wallet identifier... Not sure if the format is 100% correct tough, but those groupings with dashes in between bring back those memorys...
407  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Migrating OS; Bitcoin Core from Win to Linux on: March 29, 2022, 08:08:47 AM
  • Could you share your personal take on running Bitcoin node on Linux?

All other answers were answered, but this one is rather personal... So i tought i'd chip in.
I'm a unix sysadmin (it's my daytime job), so i might not be the best reference, but i find running a full node on *nix much easyer to setup than running one on windows.

If you're stuck, i helped n0nce gathering all info he needed to write this nice topic: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5366854.0
It was losely based on this topic written by me (a long time ago): https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5217198.0

Both topics are much wider than your usecase, but they do describe (amongst other things) how to setup a full node on openSuse and Centos...
Installing a full node on ubuntu (which seems to be more or less the most popular "newbie" distro) is even easyer: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/doc/build-unix.md#ubuntu--debian (these are the complete build instructions)

I usually compile the reference client myself, but you can also just opt to download the pre-built binary version aswell (it does require some trust regarding to the person building the binary version).

408  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "Russia May Accept Bitcoin for Gas Exports, Lawmaker Says" on: March 25, 2022, 08:41:11 AM
I'm not 100% convinced that such statements will do us much good. Especially from an EU/western point of view.

On the one hand, it proofs that bitcoin is censorship (or sanction) resistant, and that no governement can 100% control it (sure, they can force exchanges/services not to accept certain deposits, or they can ban/control mining/trading on their soil, but that's about it)

But on the other hand, there's a lot of anti-russian sentiment (with good reason i might add), so seeing Russia switching their position from "bitcoin bad" to "bitcoin good" might not be in our best intrests here... We don't want our newspapers to start spreading a new round of FUD around crypto's, and you can rest assured that if Russia would actually start accepting bitcoin, the papers over here will be filled with all kinds of negative sentiments against crypto in general.
409  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Great Bitcoin Secret Revealed on: March 23, 2022, 01:17:06 PM
I didn't plan on re-visiting this thread... don't feed the troll and all... But it keeps popping up in my "Show new replies to your posts" menu, eventough i had the OP on ignore.
After seeing he was able to draw this debate on for 10 pages, i un-ignored him and read his posts, just to see why people kept biting the bait.

Now, i'm trying to imagine what is going on in OP's mind, and based on many of his posts, i wonder if his mistake is thinking bitcoin relies on a relational database, and satoshi owns said database... Think of it as an anonymous paypal where users pay money to satoshi so he edits a user's record in his database to change the "content" of an "address" (which is a record in the relational database) from (for example) 0 to 1.
This might explain why he keeps telling us that bitcoin is just a number, and that it doesn't exist... If, in his mind, the bitcoin ledger is a mere centralized relational database that can be edited by the owner (and downloaded by the community), many of the things he says make sense....

@OP: if this is the case, the only thing i can say is that the bitcoin ledger is immutable (so nobody can change the ledger), decentralised (so nobody owns is, there is no "master data" either.. It lives on thousands of nodes at the same time, without a central authority interfering) and trustless (you don't need to trust anybody to tell you how much BTC you own). Going into the technical aspects for you seems inprobable, since you don't seem to grasp basic technology, so there's no point in discussing cryptography, network setup, the merits of open source,... but it's not because you don't understand these things that they're not real...

I'm out again... back on ignore Smiley
410  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Electrum freaked me out for the first time ever.... on: March 21, 2022, 02:34:23 PM
This is a very difficult one... Those guys are the maintainers of the repository (i assume), so they can edit the code any way they want to... If you don't agree, you have the option of forking their code, removing the message and providing the community with a "message free" electrum version.

Wether or not this message is in bad taste is debatable... I, for one, don't agree with the russian invasion, and i wouldn't mind such a message. It's a slipperly slope to say the least: it's a discussion of what an open source dev is allowed to show on a piece of software he/she maintains for free: would a button to donate to the WWF be acceptable? Or maybe a change in the colour scheme (in this case, maybe yellow and blue?). But yeah, i personally don't think i'd add such a message on a piece of software i was maintaining... Eventough i hope i'm not going to be in a situation where this choice is a matter of life or death for me.

In the end, it might boil down to wether or not the licence in which this electrum fork was distributed allows such messages... If it does allow such a message, you can always fork the project yourself if it really bothers you.

Now, don't get me wrong... I agree with you that showing such a message can freak you out... It makes it rather obvious that dev's are always able to put whatever (political) message they want into the tool they're maintaining. That being said, electrum nodes have always had the option of showing a message in the console and adding a donation address. Electrum used to have an option to send messages, and devs have always had the opportunity to add whatever they felt like to the code... I guess what freaks you out is the fact that this time it was a political message... I doubt anybody would care if the message was "save the rainforest" or "donate to greenpiece"?
411  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I Really need someone help with Electrum NOOB ALERT on: March 21, 2022, 09:53:37 AM
ok im gonna upload my screenshots il cover any private keys    how do i upload images on these message bits? i found an image button far to the left but comes up

You can only use an external image hotlink provider like imgur.
Upload your screenshots to them, then post a link.

Don't worry to much, in normal circumstances, we don't get to see your seed or (master)private key(s). In order to expose those, you need to take extra steps.
412  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: I Really need someone help with Electrum NOOB ALERT on: March 21, 2022, 09:29:39 AM
it says no bitcoin in bottom left corner but its sitting in one of the addresses in the addresses tab can u post screen shots to show you?>

Some screenshots might indeed be helpfull... Maybe you're not properly connected to an electrum node, maybe you're confused by unconfirmed transactions.

Do realise that posting screenshots might hurt your privacy... As long as you don't post seeds or private keys, your funds are not at risk.
413  Economy / Economics / Re: Is there a place in the world you could live like a king via sig campaigns? on: March 17, 2022, 09:36:53 AM
I'm a senior unix system engineer with 2 masters in a developed west european country and i make about $3500/month.
My wife is a teacher with 2 bachelors and she makes about $2000/month.

$1500/week is ~$215/day. That's ~$78k/year.
My wife and i combined make about ~$66k/year for doing specialised jobs with a lots of responsability, a bachelor/master degree, many years of ancienity in a developed country... I'm pretty sure you can live like a king in several other countrys with a much lower income.

We're a family of 3, but adding an extra 2 people won't increase the expenditure by 40%. You don't need 5 cars, 5 TV set's, 5 gaming consoles, you don't need to spend 5x as much for heating or for ISP connectivity.

In my country, which is one of the more expensive ones in the world, i'm pretty sure you can rent a house big enough to accommodate 5 people without compromising comfort, you can have 2 cars, you can have food and entertainment... You probably have enough left over to take a big overseas vacation once or twice a year. Sure, it won't be living like kings, but you'd have a warm house, a private bedroom, a bathroom you only need to share with 1 or 2 people, a car you have to share with 1 or 2 people, hot food, medical attention, entertainment,...
414  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Great Bitcoin Secret Revealed on: March 16, 2022, 02:18:20 PM
So... You're trolling right? And it seems we, as a community, have poor impulse controll. Instead of ignoring, we just have to continue to explain everything to you because we don't want newbies to fall for fake info... sigh...

I don't mind explaining a thing or two to somebody that has genuine intrest in our ecosystem, the technology, the practical implication,... but this thread seems like a waste of time (i'm going to ignore this thread in a minute anyways, so you don't have to respond, odds are i won't read the reply anyways).

I guess you'll have to revert to only accepting payment in things you can eat, burn, use as shelter, or you can wear... Everything else is either useless or is only usefull to obtain something to eat, burn; wear or use as shelter.
415  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Why doesn't c-lightning connect you to a list of peers by default? on: March 11, 2022, 12:22:00 PM
Here are some nodes to start with: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5266907.msg54940969#msg54940969

It might be a good idear to add your node to the list to, that way others can open channels to you aswell (if they want to)
416  Economy / Economics / Re: Natural Gas, Electricity, Oil / Gas & Inflation- Nightmare Scenario on: March 11, 2022, 07:22:43 AM
Last time i went to the pump for diesel (wich i need to drive to work, i use about 6 ltrs/day just for driving to/from work), i payed > 2€/ltr. That's 12€/day just in diesel, just for going to work.

Gas and electricity are also booming, every couple of weeks it looks like the prices go up by x%.
417  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Electrum wallet -> Trust wallet on: March 09, 2022, 10:23:13 AM
Hello, thanks

Please advise whether it is possible to export BIP39 mnemonics from Electrum

Denis

No, you cannot create a wallet with an electrum seed, and afterwards export a bip39 seed.

419  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoin Core Inbound connection on: March 08, 2022, 06:35:05 AM
I wonder, do you think the Bitcoin network will survive if all the network nodes are non-listening (outbound connections)?

Well, you need at least a couple that do listen, otherwise there would be no nodes to connect to from all the other nodes (with only outbound connections). But if there were only a few of such listening nodes, it would mean we (as a network) had a huge attack vector and it wouldn't be good for decentralization either.
420  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Attacks and Criticism on: March 07, 2022, 09:21:16 AM
Don't be upset from the feedbacks but learn from it , it may help you what you need to improve and how you need to improve.
Some people takes feedback very seriously, someone tried to take his own life on Facebook in 2019 and people started asking him that what is he waiting for? Calling him names on Facebook and the guy died few minutes later, instead of trying to talk him out of it they pour more gasoline into the fire, since this day I've learnt to be careful with my replies or comments online.

I"ve been on this forum for a while now, and i must say that in general, i don't think people that who threaten to commit suicide would be a targeted by us. There might be individual cases, but this is a very big forum with thousands of active users, so it's unavoidable that stuff like this might happen once in a blue moon tough.

I've even seen those scammers beggars using sob stories involving suicide, death of family members, depression getting pointed towards more proper channels to get help. Even if we all know somebody is using a fake sob story to lure us into giving them free money, we usually don't react in a way that would drive somebody to commit suicide (we don't give them the money either).

I would say that what you describe would be an anomaly. It's not impossible, but i haven't witnessed somebody expressing suicidal toughts being made a laughing stock (even if we were all 99,99% sure it was a fake sob story).

What we do is correct people if they make mistakes. Some people are more direct than others, and people's feelings might get hurt... But like it's been said numerous times in this very thread: it's up to you to grow a thicker skin... If you are wrong, you are wrong... Sure it might be nice if somebody told you politely, but that's not always what happens, and you have to learn to live with that, or search a different forum i'm afraid.
