401  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Question on investing in bitcoin - purchase/mining on: July 13, 2017, 09:36:23 PM
Purchasing or investing bitcoin is still very profitable, earning bitcoin is still very valuable for the future, so it is not too late for you to start investing in bitcoin, but for mining it is a bit too late unless you planned to buy very expensive hardware to start

I second this. Purchasing is the way to go with BTC at this point in time, unless you have a lot of initial capital.

How much bitcoin has spread in the world? And how much total bitcoin is there?

403  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Crime & Fraud: Cryptocurrencies = Unregulated Stock Market? on: July 13, 2017, 08:37:46 PM
Key: CC = Cryptocurrency

What are people's thoughts on the potential criminal use of cryptocurrency?

(I am not talking about the anonymous spending of cryptocurrency, like buying stuff off the dark web, but more so the utilisation of the currency and market, to perform fraud.)

Technically, it isn't even a crime (Yet.)

It has come to light recently that certain CC YouTubers have been shilling CCs for a fee. E.G. they could be paid a hefty sum, to promote a worthless or shifty CC. A currency they would not promote if it wasn't in their best financial interest. This could cause in an increase in potential CC price by unsuspecting victims to invest in the promoted CC, for the big players to sell-off when at a high, for all other victims to lose a significant amount.

In stock trading, this is Fraud. The scheme is actually called a 'Pump-and-dump' scheme. This is where you promote a stock through deceit and exaggeration, the stock rises exponentially. Then the original investor in the stock, sells off their large portion of shares and all other investors take a hit.

Now, you may be thinking "If an investor doesn't do the research themselves beforehand, it is their own fault." I understand what you are saying. However, it is not just YouTubers...

The biggest people to gain from Fraud are people or even organisations with very large amounts of money to invest in already. What is stopping an equity firm from hiring a tech team to develop a cryptocurrency, giving a portion of the coins to the equity firm and then the equity firm paying for advertisers of the currency? Then to eventually sell off after the ICO? Hell, i have even seen Facebook Ads for the new amazing 'Cryptocurrency' E.G. "You seen how fast Ethereum went from $40 to $160 in just one day, invest in 'X' now and it could be the same!"

Furthermore, this is all just 1 scheme. I'm not a Stock Broker, but i do have a police-related Degree and i'm well aware of different criminal methods that could be performed with CCs. Let me tell you, there is tons of different financial strategies which could be going on, especially by big players and i imagine IS going on.

My main concern though is, WHO is doing it? Just think about it; if it's not illegal, why wouldn't the already millionaires, equity firms and banks (etc), take advantage of CCs and the volatile market. Which defeats the purpose of decentralisation.

-

Please note, this is not to discourage CC. I am a recent miner and investor of CC myself. This is just to get people's thoughts on the 'criminal' use of CC.

It is definitely the Wild West. Lots of scams and insider trades. Have to find a way to sift through the BS and decide which projects are real. To me, if a dev team is willing to put themselves out their publically, its always a good sign. People who want to stay anon (and there are understanble reasons for wanting to do so) always make me cautious from an investment standpoint.
404  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining with a Macbook Pro on: July 13, 2017, 08:31:52 PM
Hey!

I'm a complete rookie and new to mining in general so I'm sorry for the questions.

Would it be worthy mining Altcoins with my Macbook?

If not, any suggestions on what I should be looking at?

Thank you!

You could CPU mine with your Macbook. Make sure you are never using more than 50% of the threads though, or you could brick it lol.

GPU mining in most cases is better than CPU mining. To GPU mine, you need an existing PC or to buy a motherboard to add Graphics cards too.

For coins to mine, looks for coins with a CPU based algorithm. Algo example- argon2d

Thank you, I'll definitely look into this!

Do you think it'd be more profitable on my case to rent one PC online for the purpose of mining?

If you really want to get into mining, I suggest saving up a bit of money. Only way renting equipment would be profitable is if the rental fee was less than your cost of electricity. Most cloud mining options are complete scams. The contracts they sell you, you have little to no chance of ever getting a ROI on your investment.

You can start out with the bare bones of a rig : mobo, psu, Hard Drive, processor, and a signle GPU. As time goes on, you can continue to add GPU's to the rig. Then you can go from one rig to two, two to three, and so on

Don't risk your ETC there guys

Thank you for the info. I usually use Bittrex for all my trading needs, unless a coin isn't listed there. So many bad stories about exchanges left and right.. never keep my money on them unless I am about to trade it.

408  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Complete noob - please help on: July 13, 2017, 07:48:25 PM
Hi everyone,

I'm a complete noob who has just started reading up on Cryptocurrencies such as BTC, ETH, LTC, etc.  I didn't know anything about these until a week ago - yes I'm REALLY that new to this.   I've been reading for a week now (and am still reading) and I believe that I now understand how blockchains work and the role of Cryptos in the process.  I'm also aware of what is required in terms of exchanges, wallets, etc in order to be able to invest / trade in these cryptocurrencies.

I'm looking to invest in Cryptos - specifically various different altcoins.  I have some questions which I would be very thankful if you would provide help on:

1.  Is there an exchange that deals in ALL of the altcoins/cryptos ?  Or do I have to open different accounts at different exchanges if I want to invest (or trade ) in, say, 20 or 30 different coins?  For example if I wanted to trade in Bitcoins or Ether I could open an account at Coinbase - but they don't trade in many alt coins.  Bittrex seem to deal with about 190 cryptos but since there are almost 1,000 cryptos out there, how / where can I trade in the rest?

2.  Similarly, is there any one wallet (soft or hard or online) where I can store my investments?  Something hard like trezor or ledger or most of the soft wallets don't seem to accept all cryptos so if I buy many different alt coins, ho / where do I store them that is very secure (2FA at least or multisig)?

3.  Which charting software (freely available) is recommended?  I know some exchanges provide very basic charts but I'd like to download something better that those.

I'd appreciate any help you can give.

1. No, each exchange has their own criteria for adding coins.. some are more exclusive than others Example- Poloniex.

2. Best practice is to always store your coin in an encrypted official wallet for a coin, and to make a backup of the wallet.dat file. Storing your coins on exchanges, or on 3rd party wallets can lead to issues. I have a ledger nano S, love it. For coins I can't put on there, or that are PoS based, I keep them in their official wallet.

3. Cryptrader is a great place to start.  Grin
409  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Nvidia and AMD on single motherboard on: July 13, 2017, 07:42:28 PM
I am brand new when it comes to mining so I need some guidance here to mine ETH.

So can we use gpu of nvidia and amd on single mother board, say for eg, 3 1070 and 3 rx580/480/470 etc on single rig? Will there be any compatibility issue?

How many gpu can we attach on a single motherboard before the problem arise?

There is actually a 12 GPU mobo that just came out recently.. You would have to run Linux to use all 12 slots though. As they said above, max for Windows is 8 GPU's.

410  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: DeepOnion - Unmoderated thread on: July 13, 2017, 07:09:38 PM
I think questions about algo (X13) and pre-mine (90%) have already been answered in the main thread by now.

The distribution scheme is ridiculous though and screams Ponzi IMO. Need to change my avatar and signature for as long as 40 weeks (9 months!) in order to get the full airdrop? No way!  Grin And you can't even sell your funds until then (like Mr. Ponzi did it). But the dev has 30% and can sell it immediately.

Such a "slow airdrop" is ridiculous in general because the dev can throw all the remaining funds he has on the market whenever he wants, i.e. when the price is high enough, and run away with it. The only way this can not happen is when the airdrop is immediately, within a few days, and only afterwards the coin gains value because it is not centrally controlled any more.

The same could have been accomplished by having very high POS rewards within those 40 weeks, but without the funds being controlled by one person in the meanwhile. Therefore owning the majority of all coins must be part of his plan...
I think this is the best observation, this is also what I am thinking, but you know what people thinks, if its an airdrop, then they have nothing to lose. which isn't good at all.

Starting to sound like TorCoin. Anonymity and scams seem to go hand in hand. Which sucks, because I am a huge privacy advocate. I think people lure groups into coins under the guise of anonymity and ultimately it ends up being a scam. Not saying this is the case with DeepOnion, but I am cautious at this point.
411  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN]Tomahawkcoin (TOM) on: July 13, 2017, 06:36:58 PM
We decided to add another Bounty prize for those that have new and original ideas we can use to better the project as well as increase the community.

The bounty will be set at 50 Tomahawkcoin, as i stated we would have to be able to use that idea.

Maybe we could add a bounty for promoting TOM with an avatar or signature on BCT?  Smiley

Great idea, ..and there it goes...

250 TOM Bounty for promoting TOM with an avatar or signature on BCT.

We are working on an Avatar as we speak, if you can make one that everyone can agree on, it would pay another 300 TOM

By the way, I'll send you 50 TOM for your idea.

412  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: ZCash backdoor? on: July 13, 2017, 05:42:12 PM

You know, and I know that a backdoor would have been sealed long ago, if it had even a chance of existing.

Wrong. Why is it so difficult to understand that the main people behind Zcash (Zooko, Green) openly confirm a backdoor in Zcash without even hiding their plans?

So no, they wont seal it but open the backdoor it by themself. Also a backdoor does not need to be lot of code but simply a vulnerability. This makes Zcash worthless.

Im hoping coins like XSPEC can step up and deliver where other privacy based coins have been failing.
413  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Sexbots. Will you be indulging? on: July 13, 2017, 05:23:20 PM
Lots of people seem to moaning with increasing intensity about the rise of sexbots. Some are claiming there'll be moral dilemmas as I assume a proper one will need some type of sentience.

Personally I can't ever see myself going for it. If I'm not imagining some bored Foxconn slave testing out the muff I'm slobbering all over, I'll be trying to catch it out like early text only adventure games by throwing out surreal suggestions.

Are you already saving up or will you stick to donkeys and greased holes in the ground?

Seems like an electrocution hazard IMO.  Grin
414  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: waves or stratis on: July 13, 2017, 05:17:29 PM
hi
i am newbie and want to buy waves or stratis, can any one guide ,which coin i have to buy for long term waves or stratis.

WAVES ftw. Their wallet via google app, and phone is super user friendly. Building tokens on the WAVES platform is easy as can be. We need more projects like this to draw more people into this space.

The only coin I feel strongly about in the near future is Nexus. Very long term.

What do you buy?

Do you pick up anything related to mining?

They have good, cheap tools. That's about all I grab from there.  Grin

Hi guys,

Any widgets to recommend?

I know we can also check on browser or fire up the apps but I like the fact that I can slide into the widgets section to check price change. Currently I am using coinbase but it only has ether and bitcoin.

Try Blockfolio  Cool

Sorry.. Misread. Not sure on widgets
