If the emission curve for xpm is the worst, then isn't the opposite emission curve the best, or near best?

XPM destroys its own inertia by making it harder to hit a block as the mining power is turned-up and easier to hit a block as the mining power is turned-down. Wouldn't reversing this allow a coin keep its inertia going until the last coin is mined? Why fight it with an arbitrary block reward setting? If BTC had used a non-arbitrary system for block reward, they wouldn't hit adoption walls caused by exponential shifting in prices. The thought is that more people are drawn to BTC as the price increases, but let's at least consider for the sake of argument, that people are driven away from BTC as the price increases, for fear of losing their initial investment and being tagged a bag-holder.

Just a thought.

Monero was worth roughly $2.25 not so long ago. We are now below $1 per coin.
Worst part is it Bitcoin itself has lost a ton of value and not even in a crash; but just a steady decline.

Yes, but that was in response to multiple attacks on Monero which I would say it has weathered fairly well.

In reality it likely has more to do with a general bear market in cryptos. The attacks and threats have some effect, but I would rate them as secondary at this point.

Agreed, I think some weak hands were looking for a reason to sell out, and the Russia ban provided an impetus. It reminds me of the reaction to the incessant China bans from a few months back.

Having a tough time figuring out what you're saying.  Fear or greed can be good or bad (if that's how you want to look at it).  Fear kept people from making fortunes with bitcoin.  Greed made people lose fortunes.  Depending on timing and a lot of other stuff.

I was just replying to the person who was implying fear was chasing away noobs.   Of course greed and fear are two NATURAL sides of the coin (no pun intended)

My point I guess was just that greed and fear are two opposite emotions in the investment/gambling arena.

I agree with your other stuff about generosity vs greed & fear of missing life experiences vs fear of dying.  Just not sure those are as applicable as investing/gambling

Not sure if we're on the same page, but can give some clear examples of fear being flipped in the gambling/investing world:

I'm afraid of making a bad investment, so I research and track every investment I make/ I'm afraid of making a bad investment, so I make no investments at all or trust second party's as infallible (ahem--Madoff).

I'm afraid of making a bad bet, so I research odds and hone my instincts with practice/ I'm afraid of making a bad bet, so I never bet.

I'm afraid of not making my money back, so I spend more time researching and making calculated risks so as to ensure my results are better with each coming move/ I'm afraid that I won't make back the money I lost, so I frantically invest in long shots that promise to pay off big.
4024  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [XMR] Moderated Monero General Discussion Thread on: October 02, 2014, 05:38:23 AM
(crypto does not deserve to be classified as "investing")

If you are going to make a statement like that than you need to qualify it. Many if not most people on this forum would disagree. If you are going to make an assertion that almost everyone would disagree with than it needs to be accompanied by an argument, else it looks a lot like trolling.

The gambling/investing assertion wasn't necessary for my primary point.  Fear & greed are the two emotional sides of eithe gambling or investing.  I could write a long post explaining my perception of the two but I'm on my phone right now o.0

That's imposing the argument that negative energies must create "negative" energies. But isn't Love and Hate a more apt to any ying/yang model. I would say the opposite of Greed is Giving and the opposite of Cowardice is Bravery--I changed fear to cowardice because fear is a primary energy that can be viewed as good or bad. I'm afraid of being arrested, so I follow laws: I'm afraid of not getting rich, so I break the law; I'm afraid of not living my life completely, so I grab a hold as many experiences as possible; I'm afraid of the unknown, so I don't try new things....

From the quiescence of this thread, in contrast to the rapid growth of the free-for-all thread, I feel forced to conclude that people are idiots.

Wait, you're what, 45 to 55?  And you're just concluding that?

I don't believe you.

Many people are motivated by fear--and I believe the motivating fear acting here is: if you let trolls rule the unmoderated thread, that new users will be influenced by FUD and the adoption rate won't increase. At least that's why some days, and depending on my anxiety level,  I go to the wasteland instead of relaxing on a nice soft comfy chair.

BCX did great on manipulating people. He may also did great with buying/selling to affect the XMR/BTC chart in his favour.

Just take a look at max zoom-out at the last five days:

https://hitbtc.com/terminal/XMRBTC

Small miners and small bagholders are lured to sell now (better loose some than everything) - and they do sell, many small trades @ the orderbook.
However diff is not lower than the average, so network is doing good.

The timing of all this fud-n-fear scenario could not be better: Just some weeks before the official GUI wallet hits the download page. The GUI wallet gets XMR to the public, to the 90% of humans out there not being able to open a DOS/terminal box and execute bitmonerod and simplewallet.

So letīs see if I am terribly mistaken about all this...

Watching this post.  Smiley

This was a no-lose scenario for BCX, just different sorts of wins.

For the most part I would agree with this.  But if I were BCX I would find the hit to my reputation a bit hard to reconcile.  In the end he just was a lying manipulator.  And perhaps this is enough for him to have fun.

In the end his credibility was badly damaged by this.

BCX!  Crusher of Solidcoin!  Destroyer of Auroracoin.

Played peek-a-boo with Monero.

Doesn't really continue the legacy does it?

Agree, the Bit Corn moniker is something no prophet wants, especially when they claim to have the the keys to the collapse. You can spin it however you want, but this stinks of failure.

him being afraid that monero could really get litecoins position, but why wouldn't he simply buy or mine xmr when they are cheap.

Ahhh - litecoin.  That is the only rational explanation that I've said from the beginning makes sense.

I believe he got litecoin for around 0.20 each.  XMR isn't a sure thing with BBR plus dealing with a new codebase that still isn't fully understood.

Hubris could also be a factor. Like a North Korean dictator's perfect game, BCX might buy into the notion of infallibility.

No offense but I don't think BCX is trying to trade his reputation for a 15% discount on Monero.

His 500BTC bet offer seems to back up my assumption.

I assumed the 500 btc bet was to encourage a collusion of interested parties. If a consortium could guarantee a 500 BTC return for their efforts, they would expend more resources to gain a favorable result.

But then I always assume there's a rational plan, but that's not always the case.

"All aboard the Bitcoin Express! We're leaving in 72--errrr...wait, wait...4 day--wait..errr...2 weeks! Yeah, get on board! Next stop Fudville!"

What are you laughing for? BCX had reached his goal. He had planned to bring the XMR price down with his exploit bullshit to buy in as cheaply as possible and got what he wanted.

Hype gets more results than actual attacks sometimes. I'm thinking of the show Borgias. The French butchered a town when they entered Borgias territory to make future towns unlikely to show resistance. The Borgias son  returned the favor when he had plaster cannons made and moved to the turrets of Rome. The French withdrew for fear of having their army decimated by the imagined threat.

For me, I view FUD attacks as buying opportunities. The best revenge is showing your enemies how much they've helped you. Can't thank BCX enough. If he got discounted XMR, he should make a donation to the developers of his new investment. If he sells to make a quick buck, then he'll understand--one day soon, I hope--Monero is a global cash system and you always want to have cash on hand.

Looks like Monero set to take the altcoin throne now.

Monero suffers from a fatal flaw, blockchain bloat. Meaning slower transaction times, and a lot of unnecessary waste of hard drive space.  If your looking for a sold alternative with all the benefits of Monero, but a coin that avoids the downfalls, consider Boolberry. Boolberry blockchain has a feature where when the blockchain starts to get too big it can pruning its self, cutting as much as 70% of the bloat. The code is a lot more solid. Monero is basically a cut and paste job of the Cryptonote source code. Boolberry is rewritten with a faster more efficient algorithm, the code is neat and tight, and is basically a meaner cleaner rewrite of the orginal Cryptonote source code. Its Monero's superior in every way.

Monero has better liquidity. I don't need faster transaction times. I need to know that I can buy large amounts of the coin at a stable price. If I tried to buy $100,000 in BBR the price would skyrocket, and no matter how quickly it got there, they would lose value by the time they left my wallet--not cool. The Monero market has shown it can absorb bigger buys without tanking or skyrocketing the price. That's not an issue for buying a video game, but it's a big issue if you're trying to send $10,000+ to an international account.

An exploit has been found in the pool code, which means that some miners are submitting duplicate shares to the pools. Pool owners should update to latest code, pools that have been patched include minexmr.com, hashinvest.net and monero.crypto-pool.fr. Other pools are currently being exploited, including moneropool.com, which means if you are mining there you will recieve ~40% xmr less than you should.

PS this is not related to the recent BCX stuff

thanks.

xmr is truly btc circa 2011

I love the people who say they wish they would have bought BTC in 2011, because you know if you presented them with XMR, they'd dismiss it as too risky. They're the same people in the mid-nineties who said that they wish they would have bought Microsoft in the eighties, but didn't want to invest (circa 95') because the stock wouldn't rise that much more. They should change they're their investment statement to, "I wish money would land on my lap."

~TKT~

Meme on meme violence.  Cheesy

Can you post a "it's happening" upside down and infinite within the Monero mascot? When I was four, I saw a t-shirt with a girl doing a handstand, with t-shirt of a girl doing a handstand, with a girl doing a handstand with t-shirt of a girl doing a handstand with a..."Holy Infinity! Mind blown!"

For the immediate funding needs, can an early GUI be offered to donors for a test-run?

For long-term funding, can the mix-in include a percentage fee to the devs?

And thank you for creating a Troll free zone. If I ever see the name Surplus Bob on here, I'll, I'll...thank him for helping me get discounted Monero  Grin

For immediate funding, donation and MEW membership are useful mechanisms, and encouraging others for this would help also.

Picture is of a Tucker 48. A car that was more advanced than anything being produced in Detroit at the time. The Big Three automakers made sure to use every means possible to make sure there wasn't a Tucker 49. There wasn't.  Embarrassed Great movie on the subject: Tucker, a Man and His Dream.

same thing happened to MySpace, MilliVanilli, and Boone's Farm.  All great brands unfairly hounded off their pedestal in history.

MilliVanilli,  Grin My friend threw away their albums when he found out that it wasn't the guys in the videos--I asked him, "Why? It's not like the music changed."  Sad Not sure if he was still mad at them or the fact that he was buying the brand and not the product.

Can we disprove that with 100% certainty?

No we can not disprove the existence of something. We see no suspicious activity. Beyond that we aren't going to comment on rumors and speculation.

I say aliens are trying to steal Monero through a wormhole timewarp loop, can you disprove that smooth? Cheesy

so I sleep better.

This is how I imagine BCX's Timewarp:

Would anyone place a premium on first access to the GUI?

--Devs would get funding and valuable insight from the most invested/interested parties.

--Investors would get an early look and be able to give feedback.

--win?/win?
