I heard a rumor a few weeks back (Jan 19th) regarding ASICs on the network - supposedly there was a batch of 5000 miners manufactured for a private Chinese farm that went online just recently. It seems to be pretty feasible after comparing against some analytics done on the nonce ranges of historic blocks: https://github.com/noncesense-research-lab/nonce_distribution/blob/master/nonce_distribution.ipynbConveniently enough, this analysis concludes the miners came online around Jan 9th. <sech1> So after a thorough analysis of the winning nonces for blocks 1760000-1765000 I can say this about ASICs that are on the network now:
<sech1> 320 cores (10 chips x 32 cores?)
<sech1> each core processes nonces with 2^22 step - from 0 to ~1.34e9
<sech1> Single core speed is 400 h/s - calculated from the area of spikes (which come with 2^22 step) on winning nonce graph
<sech1> Overall ASIC device speed = 128 kh/s (400*320)
<sech1> Around 4000-4500 ASICs online now
<sech1> M5M400 they do mine on public pools: f2pool, viabtc, poolin - they all submit blocks with winning nonces strictly in ASIC nonce ranges
<sech1> all 3 are Chinese pools ironically
<sech1> so we can just count them in "unknown hashrate" part
<sech1> which leaves only 230 MH/s known
<sech1> and 641 MH/s = almost exactly 5000 * 128 kh/s solar
At the time of this post, network hashrate is 850 MH/s (640 MH/s being 75% unknown), putting us squarely in the danger zone for network-level attacks. This is also a major drain on public pools - with only 230MH/s of "legitimate" miners popular pools are operating at a significant loss, having only 60-70 MH/s on average (e.g. SupportXMR at 0.6% is just below $1300/mo, while their server expenses are approximately $5000/mo). With the next hard fork still a few months out this is a completely unsustainable scenario and will eventually lead to the closure and consolidation of the public pools, not to mention a mass exodus of "legitimate" miners. the current network hashrate likely consists of 85.2% ASICs (5400 ASIC machines) and some die-hard GPU miners and botnets. This is why hard forks purely for banning ASIC miners are dangerous in my opinion, they lower your network strength (making it vulnerable to 51% attacks) while ASIC manufacturers will find ways to circumvent it. Best is to just allow ASIC miners and have them spread their hashrate evenly across pools (difficult to arrange, but not impossible). Yes and no |

You don't see any negative impact over a single miner controlling 75% of the network? They could attack the chain at any time until the hard fork (2 months away) with ease.

What do you guys think of the slow accumulation of gold by non-US central banks? It seems that they believe (as do many of us) that the dollar’s reserve currency role is unsustainable and that gold will return to its former role as sound high-powered money. I’ve thought that in light of Bitcoin and Monero the central bankers were betting on the wrong horse. Is it possible that it is we not them who are out of touch? What is most likely, a return to the gold standard, adoption of a cryptocurrency standard, or coexistence of both standards?
It's not just gold that's being accumulated by non US banks, crypto is also starting to get accumulated. You're right on the money when you say that the dollar is on its way out as the reserve currency. The countries moving away from the dollar are all trying to lessen the blow for when that happens. It will be a a big hit for everyone seeing how much of the world is tied to the dollar. Gold seems like the best bet, but no one really knows what will take its place, which is why you're seeing many investments outside of just gold. I like to think that this would be an excellent opportunity for crypto to try to step up to the plate but as of right now, I dont think there is any project that is ready. That said i'm still a big fan of monero and believe in the project. No country is buying any crypto right now. Best chances is the crypto they get from some busted illegal operations. Specially in countries where court system is slow and takes years and years and years until trials gets finished. Some such countries will get rich not even knowing they did. ich möchte mich an dieser Stelle ganz ganz herzlich bei dir bedanken, daß du persönlich in diese Aktion so viel Herzblut, Engagement und Ideenreichtum investiert hast!!!
Ich habe kein Interesse an den Kontoauszügen, nicht weil sie mich nicht interessieren, vielmehr empfinde ich es persönlich dir gegenüber als Hohn auch noch zu kontorllieren, ob da woll alles richtig gelaufen ist. Ich von meiner Seite ziehe den Hut vor dir, da du mit der gewonnen Kohle nicht zufrieden am Whiskey genippt hast, sondern dich für das Glück anderer Menschen in den Dienst gestellt hast, von mir großer Applaus!!!!!!!!!
Ich bin da gleicher Meinung, ich denke wir sollten die 3BTC auf der hohen Kante lassen, wieder einmal eine Spendenaktion Wette laufen lassen und uns dann überlegen, wie wir Menschen eine Freude machen können, muss ja nicht zwingend zu Weihnachten sein, kann auch eine bedürftige Familie sein wo die Tochter einen Rollstuhl JETZT braucht und die Kohle im Haushalt einfach nicht da ist, ich denke den Sinn hat jeder verstanden.
Ich würde vorschlagen, wir bleiben einfach in Kontakt und suchen uns eine schöne Spende Wette und dann sehen wir weiter, was meint ihr?

Die Sexismusdebatte weil es gerade in ist nervt mich. als Frau. Bitte Annerl, ich bin jetzt seit 2013 hier, mal mehr, in den letzten Monaten sehr viel weniger aktiv- ich habe mich auch nie "versteckt", sondern war immer offensichtlich als weibliches Mitglied dieses Forum unterwegs und wurde nicht einmal sexistisch angegangen. Es ist aber auf Grund der Sache ein öffentliches Forum, in dem in erster Linie volljährige Männer unterwegs sind und ja mei, dann kommt da mal ein Bildchen, über dass ich persönlich die Augen rolle und von dem ich auch mal genervt bin. Aber solange es sich im legalen Bereich bewegt ist das dann doch ok. Das hier ist kein Forum, was man über FragFynn und mit Alterssperre findet. Ich habe Kinder, die sind auch im ähnlichen Alter... die sehen dann auch mal so ein Bild, genauso wie sie die Wackelmobile am Strassenrand sehen oder Sexszenen im Nachmittagsprogramm. Sie können das sehr genau und sachlich einordnen, weil wir im Gesprächsbedarf drüber reden- und sie wissen, die Damen auf den Bildern machen einen Job, mehr nicht. Manche finden es gut, manche nicht. Es kommt keiner zu Schaden. Endegelände.
Und bitte- diese ganze Sexismusdebatte... Frauen sind kein Stück besser, man nennt es nur anders... und seltsamerweise ist das im Gegensatz zu männlichem Sexismus mittlerweile gesellschaftlich anerkannter... einfach mal ein wenig leben und leben lassen und souveräner damit umgehen- solange es im legalen Rahmen ist.
