The story is that he lost 700000 XMR worth about 20500 XBT on his Apple laptop. I am not a fan of Apple and its EULA's but this has to be a record for a click on "I agree".

wtf has apple to do with it?

Probably nothing. As I recall, he had a bunch of people over and overlooked the most basic aspects of physical security. Then again, I may be misrememberating.

Not good to make fun of the misfortunes of others; however, I recall that Risto had some other drama a few years earlier, too... something about leaving his laptop in a conference room of a hotel and then the laptop went missing with thousands of bitcoins.  Isn't this a repeating theme with Risto, and if it were to happen once, then wouldn't additional security measures be taken in order to not have a similar scenario unfold a second time?

I think that is the incident to which I was referring. Though I think it was in the sauna at his place during an event with many invitees. I may be befuddled on the deets.

Actually, do you know how rumors can be evolve their own legs when they get batted around long enough, and it is like the game "telephone" where the last message is no where close to the first message.

It is certainly true that Risto has had a lot of drama including losing bitcoins, buying a castle, getting involved in monero, getting a divorce, being supposedly chased by the government.. and some kind of online gaming, too, so yeah, it is not very clear regarding the extent to which some of these stories might overlap, and he has been a bit of a drama queen, too, including some photos that he circulated on the internet of his personal circumstances, and even personal details that may or may not be completely true.

He has also had some incidents of health problems including psychiatric treatment, and I recall one time trying to suggest that he take better care of his health, because I saw a picture of him with a cigar and he looked really pale and unhealthy and lacking in athleticism - for a fairly young guy.

Anyhow, the laptop losing incident in the conference/hotel/sauna predated his getting involved in Monero, so if he really did lose a bunch of Monero, then that may have been a separate incident?

I believe that the hotel/sauna/conference loss, even though substantial, did not leave him in any kind of state of poverty, because, I think that he bought the castle after that with bitcoins... and maybe in the end, he tries to be a big baller and we know the expression that a fool and his money are soon parted... and if you are engaging in a lot of this kind of drama, then you are likely going to have trouble hanging onto wealth, unless you have someone managing your money for you, such as a trust.

Well, Risto indirectly brought me into crypto, so i am thankful for that. I liked Ristos math's and points he brought up, but as you say, the value of money also gains a certain amount of loss in your brain and personality. I feel with Risto that he likely never will see his kids again, has a wife who forces him to take medics like hell and that he is living alone in fucked up castle...

1124  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: September 02, 2017, 06:26:18 AM
is it still worth to buy monero?

I buy a small amount every week no matter where the price is and haven't regretted it yet. Only wish I had been doing it sooner (as in before alphabay). Smiley

The next Alphabay will have a much, much larger impact on the fundamental value of XMR.  For one thing, it won't allow BTC or ZEC (insert image of Cazes hanging by his belt in a Bankok jail cell).  For another, it will grow faster and to a much larger size:. The pent-up demand will be enormous, and the fear factor involved in using BTC or ZEC won't be there to inhibit transactions.

But bootstrapping trust requires magic.  How long that will take, I do not know.  If it takes too long, a technical solution will emerge.

Question is will Multisig be available before then?

Well, we shall see Grin

Shh go away with your predictions you were already right last year  Tongue  I personally expect atleast one last cycle upwards with the correction after that.

I concur, the problem is figuring out  where that is going to happen!

Does anyone have the date and time the event is ended?

I think on Monday we will have a price below 0,026

Here is the Cryptopia response to me, regarding BCN. Maybe I misunderstood. Please advise if it makes any sense. If not, I can ask for clarification. It's a bit raw. It seems to be important to me, if it can cause problems for XMR's (and Aeon) down the road.

"You've basically got the right idea. Polo sends about 90% of their cryptonote transactions to us just fine, but they encrypt the payment IDs of the other 10% with some password we've not yet figured out. We tried to contact their support to explain what they were doing but much like their users, we've been waiting for months with no reply. We have a working theory that like us, Polo has issues with Cryptonote wallets timing out calls, and thus it's probably only the manually reprocessed transactions that are going badly - when you google it, in many examples of how to send transactions for Cryptonote, the user is instructed to use a password to encrypt the paymentid - we assume that whoever is redoing their transactions doesn't know what they're doing.

"There is 2 major problems with this for us. The first being that many smarter users starting watching the blockchain for encrypted payment IDs arriving at our addresses, multiple users would then log support tickets claiming that the transaction was theirs and that they should be credited. A single transaction with an encrypted paymentid doesn't create a single support ticket, it creates many.
And so we just sent all the encrypted transactions back to Polo, we even paid the fees to do that, with the same encrypted payloadid hoping that Polo would figure out what we were doing and why, but, alas, nope. We then started getting user complaints that people were trying to move funds from Polo to Cryptopia, and that we were essentially rejecting their money and sending them to Polo's support to wait 3 months for shits and giggles.

"On one hand we get called thieves, and on the other we have users trying to leave Polo to come to us and having a very nasty first user experience which is out of our control. Either way, the support overhead makes us run at a massive loss to support Cryptonote coins, and the negative reputation we get for Polo's mistake made it a pretty clear cut "sorry, but this is why we can't have nice things", and is the reason that we don't accept new Cryptonote coins and are actively delisting the ones we do have. It's nothing to do with any KYC/AML requirements; it's nothing to do with the anonymity components of the coins/protocol; it's simply a bullshit sandwich being served up by Polo that we don't wanna eat anymore.
Worth noting is that for whatever reason, this issue doesn't happen nearly as much with XMR (like 0.5% of the transactions vs 10%), I dunno why."

Well, it certainly beats my stash!  Cheesy That's what I get for being a dabbler. However, I do make slightly more per year than 9 BTC. But with the way things have been looking lately, 9 BTC will surpass my yearly job income very soon. Yeah, I know, I'm languishing in near poverty.

I didn't mean to imply I'm any better off. But it's important to keep your composure around rich folks.

Most of the Bitcoin whales are Lower Upper class right now.( The nouveau riche.) No need to treat them like royalty.  Cheesy

Aha okay, thanks... RangeDriver, you there bro?  Paging RangeDriver Paging RangeDriver Cheesy

~0.026 marks the 38.2% retraction and coincides with previous resistance.

That should be a pretty reliable floor if you're able to get in there.

I think we will dip below 0,026  Wink

If so, I shall be very, very happy to buy them.
If Monero can drop down under that price, I will comeback margin trade and putting all my money, lol Grin!
I do not think Monero can dip below 0,02 BTC again like earlier of this year.
I remember someone sayng here that it would be impossible to see monero bellow 0.015 again. and it did for several weeks. At that time it seemed very reallistic to see monero hold above 0.015 as it seems reallistic to see it hold 0.02 now...

I think it's oversold right now, so i speculate on a drop down to 0,024xxx in the next days  Cheesy

I dont think we will see much of a drop before Sunday, unless BTC goes $7000+ .  But after Sunday you never know what will happen, things move fast in crypto. In one week everything can change.  In September we will have new GUI and hard fork.  Possibly more things that i cant even think right now could attract people to Monero.
Well, we shall see Grin
