Much of the worries about mining problem seems unwarranted, the degree of the decentralization of the network is limited by mostly two factors only: the Bitcoin price and its adoption rate.

Had miners been able to receive a yearly revenue as much as that of Paypal, at 10 times the hashrate of current network a USB ASIC miner is still able to remain significantly profitable.

Also, USB miner consumes negligible amount of power, why not just consider your power cost to be spent on buying some lottery tickets? Billions of people bought them each year, what's different when it comes to Bitcoin mining?

You can't beat technology with politics.

Grin

上会砸盘时Gox也实名制了吧?

今年6、7月美国才动手整治mtgox

我怎么记得那回是李笑来砸滴盘...而且即便没整治,实名提现额度也有限。

bears will stop at nothing these days

and they rely on third party site to make their theories.

I was able to connect to btcchina the whole time.

Also, there is not just BTCChina in China, there are several sites with similar volume.

Why aren't they on bitcoincharts?

Maybe because, they don't care enough to provide data to a site that their customers never used?

this stuff wants one to puke... sick!

it could be a fake made by bitcoin antagonists
to create a reason why btc should be banned

That's what I was thinking as well.  Trying to get as much bad press out there as possible!

The effect may just be the opposite:" Woo, BTC can be used to hire assassins anonymously! And all the cool kids are doing it, it must be really badass."...

It ain't like you can just spend some bitcoins, and ask for the killing of someone and get away with it. If you want to kill a person completely unrelated to you, heavy security usually is around him, if you want to kill someone related to you, the law enforcement can find out about you through the victim's social network.

There's no way the FBI gives them up.
They won't give them up, but the NSA might deploy Stuxnet to steal them.

Seriously. I much prefer the FBI have them than some bankers.

At least they can use them to fight crime. I know that will piss off some anarchists around here.

At least if they try to sell these coins we can manipulate the hell out of them Wink

If you don't want to be defrauded, why not use escrowing?

Better still, with Bitcoin you can do a no third party two-signature escrow, which means no one can withdraw the money without the consent of both parties, or a 2 of 3 one with a trusted party, which is in itself a revolutionary technology.  Have you looked into that?
436  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: November 18, 2013, 03:57:10 AM
Currently, the Bitcoin network consumes about 5M-6M joules per second, which means that each Bitcoin will take about 5.5MW*600s/25=1.28*10^8 J to create, using the mass-energy equation, 1 gram of gold/silver, or any matter can be converted to about 9*10^13 J of energy, but gold/silver ceases to be different from any other matter at elementary particles stage, so the energy ratio could be much smaller, and likely to go to 1 should the Bitcoin price increases another thousand fold. The fiat money en

SHA256 used in mining is like the Horcrux of Bitcoin, should it not be broken(the one used in address hashing can be replaced), Bitcoin remains very real like matter despite being virtual.
437  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Zerocoin proofs reduced by 98%, will be released as an alternative coin. on: November 17, 2013, 01:05:02 PM
If I understand it correctly, we can immediately take advantage of what they offer.

Create some cryptocoin exchanges on Tor, which trades both Bitcoins and zerocoins, people can then start laundering their money through the zerocoin blockchain.
438  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: CoinJoin: Bitcoin privacy for the real world on: November 17, 2013, 08:46:53 AM
Send from the Bitcoin Qt client, I think it's the only client that supports these P2SH address types. (beginning with a 3)
Pretty embarrassing that the Bitcoin ecosystem can't keep up with a couple year old feature. It's not the only thing, some websites will, electrum will, the SX tools will. But armory, nothing bitcoinj based, or blockchain.info will.

It's a real bummer because I think that using a multi-signature escrow is the right and proper thing to do here. I don't think I should personally be holding money set aside for this— my computer security is good, but I think no single person should be entrusted with holding non-trivial amounts of other folks money.  How many bitcoins have been stolen that could have been avoided if the norm was to use in blockchain escrows for things, but people didn't because of silly wallet compatibility?  Sad  (And perhaps people will understand that I'm really not being a rabid bitcoin-qt advocate when I say that I'm not super eager to see lots of alternative implementations, they really do complicate the ecosystem and make new features harder for people to use)  [/OT]

Besides, I haven't seen a Coinjoin implementation supporting it! So instead of sending donations to the fund address I send to your personal donation address.

440  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Verifiable bank transfer using SCIP? on: November 17, 2013, 07:05:15 AM
I'm not sure it's a strategic decision not to implement that. I think it's just that digital signatures are complicated and normally unnecessary, so 99.9% of users wouldn't find that feature valuable and are not requesting it. I mean, did you care or have any use case for it before this project? I doubt it. I've never needed digitally signed statements from my bank because normally I don't share them with anyone.

If it was brainless and on by default, I don't see why a bank would explicitly disable a TLS extension to let you sign a session hash. It's not like banks routinely say, "We didn't send that" about paper statements even when they did.

But it's something that would take years to become widespread, at best. So the oracle approach is not a bad way to start.

I have some experiences about that, in many countries when you need to apply for a student visa to another for education, the visa officers routinely request you to submit proof of you financial ability, like something they call a certification of deposit, which is only produced in paper form and needs to be stamped, as electronic version can always be forged, so you will need to get to a bank branch and queue for several hours just to get it done, an annoyance especially consider they only work Monday to Friday, nine to four, had they digitally signed their statements you could have one printed out in minutes, I guess it's just the non-profitability and fear of any change that is stopping them from making digital signed bank statements available, as my use case is quite common.
