One thing you can't do is order from oldest to newest, can you? This could be very useful. See tmp.loyce.club/imagebackup/sorted_by_date.txt. I don't see how this helps though: images could be posted/quoted years after they were uploaded. Instead of "expand on click", could you make this a profile option? Something like: "Tick to enable all imgur images without proxy". What about users who aren't logged in? Maybe they can still get the "click to expand" feature. Imho this is a non-problem. An image-website owner would notice in less than a month he can optimize his space by checking the images (maybe their checksums at first) and not store the duplicates while providing same or different (by his choice) links to them. And before the question arises, where deletion is possible, the actual file will be removed only when reference count goes to 0. Doing this is not exactly easy. It would take a system that compares the image posted with the image on the server. This would require constant scraping to see if the image link is the one in today's post or not. A checksum makes this quick: create a checksum for each file, and add it to a long list (or database). For each new upload, see if the checksum already exists. If it does, hard link the new file to the old file instead of creating a new one. Out of curiosity, I'm now checking how many duplicates there are in the 800k imgur images I have. Results are surprising: there's one image uploaded 32752 times, which turns out to be a removed image: "The image you are requesting does not exist or is no longer available". In total, 10124 images are uploaded once or more, and in total 55932 times. Hard linking those files could save a few GB of data. |

I would like to know if you think there would be any way to confirm if the image is still in use in the forum or not? That would perhaps force a new scraping.  Scraping everything again would be the only way to know for sure, but I'm not going to do that again. At one page per second, it took me months to download all old posts. Can you display the images by topic ID or is it a little difficult? I could, but I don't think it's worth the effort. It would mean creating another set of .zip files (~150 GB) and takes quite a while to sort it out. So, I delete a 20Mb gif from a post of mine (quoted from someone else) and that is then deleted from the ZIP file? No, I can't update the .zip files. That would require rescraping all posts. |

I don't know how it's going to help me. The main goal was to avoid this: In addition to explicit images, Imgur is also removing old and unused photos that are not tied to an account. As a Twitter user noted, Imgur has been used for years to upload photos without an account and post links to different kinds of sites. Removing those images might result in a lot of dead links all over the internet. The changes are going to take effect this Month on the 15th. |

I'm missing option 5: 5. Someone creates a website with all most of the imgur images, and you forward the image proxy to that site for any imgur picture. It's probably a good idea to combine it with option 4: 4: ~prevent using imgur embedded images in any future posts, to sort of phase it out. Would this be an option for you (@theymos)? If so, I have 801,550 images waiting  @LoyceV also launched an interesting idea, how do you think it's viable? yehey another imgur topic As you've probably noticed, images from imgur.com no longer work on Bitcointalk. That's why I've downloaded 801,550 images from imgur, which were embedded on the forum. Downloading took 3 days using 4 different servers, and another 3 days to process the data. I used the links from my unedited posts archive, which means I'm missing all images that were edited in later. After some cleaning, I'm left with 5 directories: 4.1M ./img.imgur.com
35M ./i.stack.imgur.com < this one is still working
1.8M ./www.imgur.com
132M ./imgur.com
146G ./i.imgur.com
146G 99.9% of the images come from i.imgur.com. I made a .zip for each user. It includes all images related to that account (including quoted images). After extracting the .zip file, " list_of_posts.html" shows links to all images, posts (some of which have been deleted) and archived posts. Example:tmp.loyce.club/imagebackup/459836.html (note that the image links don't work without downloading the .zip). Replace my userID by your own: tmp.loyce.club/imagebackup/USERID.html On top of that page, you'll find a link to a .zip file. Or replace " html" by " zip" to go there directly. If there's no file with your userID, that means I found no embedded imgur-images for your account. 9999999999 is for posts without userID. Update: if someone wants the full data, just ask. No need to download all separate .zip files.

I have a Raspberry Pi 4 with 8gb ram which could do this, using a fresh Ubuntu install. Can I copy the blockchain files (not wallet!) from my offline installation of Bitcoin core to save me some time? That way it would only have a few days worth of blockhain to update. This should work, but why use a full Bitcoin Core installation just to broadcast your transaction? You can get a Tor browser (for privacy) and use https://coinb.in/#broadcast (or many other websites) to broadcast the raw transaction. Is there any point in doing an upgradewallet with my original wallet in the offline Bitcoin Core? I can't answer this. If it's working, I wouldn't touch it, but it might be worth it if you currently don't have spare addresses in the keypool (which means you need to make new backups). Finally, once Ledger set up, is there any risk/implications in transferring a test amount (like 1 to 10 mBTC) so I can get the hang of things? Read this: Five Ways to Lose Money with Bitcoin Change Addresses, especially the part under "1. Backup Failure". Modern wallets prevent this, your old wallet may still have this risk. |

Hey, I can compete with this! For only $8.99 per month I'll keep a backup of all your seed phrases, and I guarantee you that if your funds ever gets lost, I'll blame you and you won't get €50,000 from me! Still not convinced? Unlike Ledger, I've never leaked full address data of millions of my customers. How's that? This is so bad that i might give them negative feedback if they have account on this forum. I've actually done that to "services" that ask users to send their seed phrase. This is no different. And considering this "feature" require ID verification where Ledger already leak user data in past, it feels like disaster waiting to happen. By disaster, i mean your legal document will be leaked and misused by criminal to perform identity theft. Don't be so pessimistic, they don't need to misuse your identity if they can use it to recover your seed phrase from Ledger directly. Sorry, I can't stop being sarcastic about this It's genius though: first telling people never to share their seed phrase with anyone, then telling them it's okay to share it as long as they pay a monthly subscription fee. So the very fact that this exists, even if you don't sign up for it, means that the next firmware update for Ledger devices will create a process by which your seed phrase is extracted from your hardware device, downloaded on to your computer, and then sent across the internet. That is a massive attack vector. It negates literally the entire point of a hardware wallet to keep your seed phrase and private keys isolated from computers and the internet. Not to mention this gives governments a very easy path to seizing all your assets, if they want, and allows all your coins to be stolen with some very basic social engineering. If you have completed KYC anywhere ever, then you've given away all an attacker needs to recover your seed phrase and empty your wallets.
Remember when Trezor and Ledger were the two best hardware wallets out there, and every thread had people (me included!) recommending either/both of them. How the mighty have fallen! Both are complete and utter trash now, completely ruined by awful decisions such as this one. Seriously, do the management teams behind both wallets understand nothing about bitcoin?
More and more I am glad that I have moved pretty much exclusively to airgapped, encrypted, cold storage for the bulk of my bitcoin. I know that my wallets will never suddenly pose a massive security and/or privacy risk out of the blue because of some absolutely moronic decision by a third party trying to squeeze more and more profits out of their customers. I've never trusted hardware wallets with any substantial amount. Being paranoid has it's perks. I haven't even updated the firmware in a long time, and I don't regret it. And some people say paper wallets are outdated! To become part of their revolutionary seed sharing solution, you have to subscribe to it somewhere, give your consent, and agree to pay those $9.99 per month. So, you don't have to use it. But can you ever be sure? I wouldn't want my seed phrases to be 1 tick box away from being send to them, and risk they take it anyway. Given that a simple software update means the secret element can now export private keys, then a simple software update could make this feature mandatory, or could remove the need for any physical button presses, or could take everyone's private keys without their knowledge or consent. The whole point of the secure element is moot. The entire security of the device hinges on non malicious software. How long would it take before there's malware that replaces the firmware and steals your funds?
Just a thought: did yogg get a new job at Ledger or something? They're both from France and planning the biggest exit scam ever would be the only thing that makes sense.
Serious question: can you upgrade the firmware without unlocking the device? |

When using bitcoin core, I can just close it. However here, it seems like it's running multiple processes and that's why I am worried. I do this: ps aux | grep bitcoind

I didn't look into this deeply, but my understanding is that it's opt-in. Do we know that people using Ledger are being put at significant additional risk just by upgrading their firmware, if they don't opt into any backup stuff? I hadn't seen this before, and it makes me wondering: if Bob would get their hands on Alice's Ledger, would it be possible to upgrade the firmware and upload it online? I always thought the whole point of a hardware wallet is to make it impossible for private keys to touch the internet, but now it's starting to look like an expensive hot wallet. |

2: Make it so that all past imgur embedded images show up as a clickable link instead of as an embedded image, as if the poster had just posted the imgur link instead of using the [img] tag. I could also maybe make it so that if you click the link, it will JavaScript-expand into an embedded image (using the specified width etc.) without going through the image proxy. Instead of "expand on click", could you make this a profile option? Something like: "Tick to enable all imgur images without proxy". 3: Exempt imgur links from the image proxy so they all just work. But this has privacy implications, since imgur will see forum users' IPs. Also, imgur has apparently banned a lot of Tor exit nodes etc. as well, so imgur images won't work for everyone. This isn't a long-term solution once imgur starts deleting anonymous uploads: In addition to explicit images, Imgur is also removing old and unused photos that are not tied to an account. As a Twitter user noted, Imgur has been used for years to upload photos without an account and post links to different kinds of sites. Removing those images might result in a lot of dead links all over the internet. The changes are going to take effect this Month on the 15th. I'm missing option 5: 5. Someone creates a website with all most of the imgur images, and you forward the image proxy to that site for any imgur picture. It's probably a good idea to combine it with option 4: 4: ~prevent using imgur embedded images in any future posts, to sort of phase it out. Would this be an option for you (@theymos)? If so, I have 801,550 images waiting It’s the author/poster main responsibility to update all his post if he really values all his content. I always considered Bitcointalk to be an archive, and long-term, everyone will abandon their accounts. IMO I'm not sure it should matter as much on what the user can do themselves, some of the users may not even be here anymore.
The forum itself should want the images as they were in the thread, to preserve the historical nature. My thoughts exactly! I certainly will not be mass-editing my prior posts, with or without a script, so hopefully there will be something that can be done here with one of the options in the OP, even if it doesn't end up the most optimal option for the forum and future readers. I don't think I've ever used imgur, but I have quoted hundreds (link doesn't work yet) of imgur images. I wasn't planning on editing those posts, but it would be nice if the images still work. |
