While Intel has the best reputation for reliability, I can highly recommend the Mushkin Chronos drives, and get the more expensive Deluxe version since they have unlocked max IOPS firmware. If you need a good price point, decent reliability, and great speed, go for the Crucial M4. For the ultimate in balls-to-the-wall performance in a standard 2.5" drive, get the Vertex 3 Max IOPS Edition.

If you really need more than the usual speed, you should also give consideration to a PCIe based SSD, or even a ramdisk if you don't need too much space.
4322  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Why no asics through smaller fabless manufacturers? on: March 18, 2012, 12:15:57 PM
180 is massive, and my understanding is that ArtForz's farm was built on 130nm and is mostly obsolete now. (No faster than current FPGAs).
It was rather 320 nm, but anyway 180 may be too big.
Oops, my bad sorry.
4323  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Why no asics through smaller fabless manufacturers? on: March 18, 2012, 12:09:52 PM
A realistic low cost asic would be something like 180nm and at least 9 wafers. (Much of those machines process 3x3 wafers)
This would result in something like couple of hundred to a few thousand chips.

Add to this packaging and testing.
That would be a custom asic, so it would still have tremendous benefit over fpgas and sasics, even with a large feature size.
None of those "compromises" will yield anything more cost effective for mining imo.

There is a reason why there is no fabless processor company utilizing sasics (or any of those things in between)
As you can see there isn't really a "low volume" segment once you realize that chips are made out of wafers, you add huge costs once placing different chips on a single wafer since the masks have to be changed and aligned each time.
180 is massive, and my understanding is that ArtForz's farm was built on 130nm and is mostly obsolete now. (No faster than current FPGAs). Sorry, incorrect info.
4324  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: The best selling FPGA board on: March 18, 2012, 12:03:23 PM
Look people, I can't even find the sites that sell the units your talking about, how can they possibly win? If Google can't find it then it's a fail.

Our website is fpgamining.com.

Okay where in the heck of your website is the price per unit? And why does your only supplier not have a unit available, I don't understand....
Must we hand you everything on a silver platter? If you did some research, you would find out that fizzisist is currently in a production run of another batch, and that's why none are in stock at the moment. Other boutique developers may only accept orders on the forum, and so forth. Ztex mainly sells FPGAs for purposes other than mining, and just happens to also sell a mining board. The Icarus developer is also burning in a production run, since he sold out of his last batches.

TL;DR: It is a fledgling business for most, and you need to do a lot of independent research. Expecting to just go plunk down some money somewhere and get an instant result is disingenuous, because of the number of variables in the equation.
4325  Economy / Services / Re: Know HVAC?? Need your help on: March 18, 2012, 11:53:47 AM
Yeah fishbone was what I was thinking of, and your in-row fans are also good. It's somewhat difficult to measure the pressure without decent tools, but the balancing doesn't have to be extremely precise. If we assume your exhaust fan is 2300CFM, then the 2 intake fans could be 1500CFM each, they don't have to be exactly 1150 or 1200.

If you use a fishbone pattern, it might be necessary to have the racks closer to the exhaust spread out farther in a V pattern, if you have problems with heating up. A little experimentation is in order, I think, so you might want to get some movers' dollies and stick the racks on them. Wink
4326  Economy / Services / Re: Know HVAC?? Need your help on: March 18, 2012, 05:15:08 AM
One thing I do know is that you are going to need a slight positive pressure with your airflow. Right now, you have only an exhaust fan, which creates negative airflow, which can result in hot spots.

You must balance the intake and exhaust so that the intake CFM is slightly higher than the exhaust CFM (but not by too much). This allows for airflow to be better distributed around the room. A small-scale example of this is a standard computer case.

Another thing to consider is possibly to put the racks at a slight angle, maybe 30 degrees and offset so that the exhaust from the rigs closest to the intakes don't cook the adjacent rigs on the same shelf.

Must...reclaim...hashes!
We're dying on this one.  Sad
I know. its been 14 days since our last block.

rjk - maybe your Mining rig extraordinaire could point to simplecoin for a while  Wink
Heh, if it worked... I need to spend some time on it (and some money)

Jesus! you guys again with the BFL singles, sure they are pretty efficient but let's face it they are LAME, insipid. I like RJK's spirit he not only has the money to burn on this things but he also is doing it for fun (and space efficiency).
Hehe, I wish I was rich, but I'm having to manage this a little bit tighter (I.E., not buying any more major components for a while Sad) But yes it is lots of fun playing with this hardware, and I just wish I had more time for it.

And money of course.

I can't find the datasheet of the PSU i use (DPS-2000 BB) but i found it for a higher wattage model (DPS-2500 BB) and it scores platinum with 91% efficiency so i think mine must be somewhere around that hopefully, when i have the time i will calculate it amperimeter in hand.
Holy crap the efficiency curve on that PSU is insane! I'll have to see about getting one to mess with.

oh and they are a lot cheaper too, you're welcome Wink
Hehe, yeah  - thanks. From a quick search, I couldn't find a BB version of the 2500, only an AB version which is 48V. However, the 2000 will be fine and it is cheap, so I can fit several together. Looks like the necessary connections are discussed here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1005309&page=41#post18117345

I have a fairly large server farm running in an warehouse.  I'm looking for someone to help me design a good air flow solution.

If you're an HVAC specialist, drop me a PM.  I could use your help!

Not an expert by any means, but I would love to see pics of your setup. And, if you are near by me (probably not), I could sell some used datacenter A/C units. (4 stage dual compressor 10 ton Liebert CRACs)

I'm in the Seattle area.  Where are you located?  I'll try to get some pics tomorrow.  Right now I have about five racks, each of which could easily be moved for optimal airflow.
Heh, Ohio, like I said "probably not" Grin
If it is all miners, that is more heat than an average server rack, but if it has "normal" servers as well, then it is easier to cool (in general). It sounds like you already have it running, and you just want to optimize it a bit, is that right?

Finally, I have a PSU that I lack the knowledge to fix, but I am 99% certain a person with more experience will have no problem fixing up:
What are its symptoms?

So they finish this sometime in 2013... Should be plenty of time to scramble together a few nuclear bombs to wipe the place off the fucking map just as they put the finishing touches on it. Anyone in for some fun?

Fabulous work, rjk. You just got every person in this thread on a domestic terrorist watchlist.

See you in indefinite detention.
Pretty sure every single one of us has been on the list since 2009 when bitcoin was invented. Cheers.
4336  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [320GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: March 18, 2012, 01:42:01 AM
I just upgraded to 6.0 rc4 and the most recent version of p2pool as shown on the first post, and am having issues. The error log is here: http://pastebin.com/3nga0nSB
Log was expanding rapidly, so I shut the node down.

Running on Server 2008 R2.

Seems your p2pool version is not current, so perhaps the first posting links to an obsolete build. Try to look a few pages back to get the link to a current p2pool build.

It's the latest tagged version from 16 days ago, and I went back several pages to no avail, because there do not seem to be any newer windows versions on previous pages.

The error messages you see are coming from bitcoin, not from p2pool.  Go make sure you actually have the latest version of bitcoin.  Based on what others have reported, it seems that the bitcoin installer often does not actually update old versions.  Maybe try the .zip file instead, or try uninstalling the old version first.
I used the zip, and I verified that I had downloaded rc4.

i'll assume "beating around the bush" was an unintended pun?

Wireless Adapter*Needed to play online*

Now that's not correct. Good luck on your sale though Smiley
it doesnt have built in wifi without the adapter.
But it has ethernet, if your home is wired.
