441  Economy / Economics / Bitcoin demand in economically volatile countries surges on: November 02, 2019, 09:51:30 AM

Demand for #Bitcoin in economically volatile regions reached record highs in 2019.

Since 2013, volumes on Argentine peso, Hong Kong dollar, and Venezuelan bolivar bitcoin pairs have exceeded $600 billion in total value.

I wonder whether the surge in the bitcoin price that started in March/April is correlated with the Hong Kong riots which started on 31st March 2019 and are still ongoing.
442  Economy / Exchanges / Re: [Warning] BitMex just leaked thousands of email addresses on: November 01, 2019, 11:24:14 PM
I am one of the users of bitmex but luckily i never received any Update mail from them Today which implies my email was not among those visible. I do use a separate email for crypto related activities but still the unsolicited spam can be annoying as a fuck. The Spam messages can make you even miss out on important updates.

Change your email address anyway. And if you have used this email address on other exchanges, change the email addresses on them too.

In order to hack your account they need a) your email address and b) brute force to work out your password.

If they have a) they'll be hammering on b) - so change everything.
443  Economy / Economics / Re: China’s President Xi Urges Accelerated Blockchain Technology Adoption on: November 01, 2019, 08:56:48 PM
I don't know what mean by China president with adoption blockchain bitcoin or altcoin as legal transaction payment, we want to play with bitcoin price for get profit or just playing drama with bitcoin and altcoin price, if they are serious want to adopt bitcoin maybe China president have asking for their institution for prepare needed to adopt bitcoin and altcoin transaction, but now still not have seriously how to adopt bitcoin in China.

Maybe the Chinese president thinks talking about blockchain makes him seem hip and happening. We saw a lot of Wall Street types talking about blockchain for that very reason!
444  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: dormant addresses are waking up? on: November 01, 2019, 07:28:22 PM
It seems as though someone immediately remembered that they have bitcoins and started sending them out somewhere else, or it could have been that some early adopters are now transferring their coins hence the movement by now. It could be a lot of things and this is not something new but apparently the timing is somewhat perfect and in-line with the recent pump that we've seen for bitcoin. Usually it goes the other way around but yeah, the movement has been a month or so ago that we don't know exactly what happened to those coins that were sent out.

This. It's likely to be an early miner that remembered they had coins in a wallet on their old computer in their attic. It's not a huge amount of coins, so unlikely to have affected either the dump or the subsequent pump.

Currently on this platform you can earn 3 tokens (3rd added recently), all are listed on CoinMarketCap, on numerous exchanges and have value. These tokens are:-

1 - Bounty0x tokens (BNTY) - Ranked 804th on CMC - MarketCap - $1,176,781
2 - HYDRO tokens (HYDRO) - Ranked 421st on CMC - MarketCap - $6,673,774
3. DAI (DAI) - Ranked 83rd on CMC - MarketCap - $82,922,013

Interesting, I notice DAI is listed on Kraken, which is a top tier exchange.
446  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: South Korea discuss the possibility to give crypto a legal status on: November 01, 2019, 04:13:53 PM
Currently, crypto is NOT taxed in korea. If they do this, it most likely WILL be taxed in korea.

Please everyone, for the sake of me, let’s all sign a petition to stop the Korean government from doing this to ME and everyone like me. This will not raise trading volumes on korean exchanges and will only hurt those invested in crypto in korea.

Damn you Korean government! Damn you all to hell....!    Source: http://www.thebchain.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=5981

Think of it like this: once something is legalised and taxed, it stays that way forever. Especially if there is good tax revenue from it. Tax is the thing that keeps it from being banned.
447  Economy / Economics / Re: Economic Incentives for Inflating Cryptocurrency on: November 01, 2019, 03:56:53 PM
There are lots of existing coins that have inflation built in - dogecoin, steem and so on. All the reasons you give for your coin are already taken care off with existing inflationary coins.

Why do you feel that the crypto world needs a new coin? New coins struggle to get traction especially if they bring nothing new to the table.
448  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Swirge.com - The best alternative to Steemit? on: November 01, 2019, 01:54:03 PM
I was just going through the ANN Threads and found this ANN on Swirge Project:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5187495.0
Haven't done much research on it. But it looks like the team are adopting the same format as Steemit.com. And the rewards in posting on steemit right now is very down as steem price is down too. So is Swirge.com a new upcoming better alternative? Or just another crappy project  Cheesy
The new crypto Facebook?

There are loads of alternatives to Steemit - for example https://trybe.one/ - but none of them have gained the critical mass that Steemit has managed.

If you have a lot of spare time on your hands, no harm trying some of these out. But just be aware that they all tend to fizzle out, Golos style.
449  Economy / Economics / Re: Binance to Open Beijing Office Amid China’s Renewed Blockchain Push on: November 01, 2019, 12:10:49 PM

Quote
Malta-based cryptocurrency exchange Binance is opening an office in Beijing, two sources with knowledge of the matter told CoinDesk. The new outpost will join Binance’s current mainland China office in Shanghai.

It’s not clear what exactly the office will do or when it will open, but the move follows a slew of announcements from Chinese authorities, including President Xi Jinping outlining China’s new blockchain ambitions.

If the office is being opened in Beijing - the seat of the Chinese government - then the purpose of the office is LOBBYING. They want someone on the spot to open back channels to officials with power.
450  Economy / Economics / Re: Can a Stock Market Crash affect Bitcoin? on: November 01, 2019, 11:25:21 AM
It all depends on the institutional investors - many of whom borrow to invest in stocks.

Say you have a hedge fund that owns some bitcoins and has also borrowed to invest in stocks. The stock market tanks and the hedge fund experiences margin calls. They then sell anything liquid to meet those margin calls - and bitcoin is pretty liquid in that you can find a buyer in seconds. Of course that in turn tanks the bitcoin price.

Most correlations that you see between stocks, bonds, gold and bitcoin is down to forced selling due to margin calls in one sector impacting other sectors.
451  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Will DEX's ever get the liquidity and volume of Centralized Exchanges today? on: October 31, 2019, 09:58:55 PM
It's a chicken and egg thing. People will only join DEX's if there is already existing liquidity, but because nobody will take the first step and everyone is waiting for everyone else, there isn't any liquidity.

Whereas centralised exchanges try to inject liquidity themselves in order to attract members to their exchanges.

Also: there are too many DEX's. People need to settle on just one or two and make them work.
452  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Will BCH even be worth mining after the halving? on: October 31, 2019, 07:58:12 PM
https://www.coingecko.com/pl/explain/bch_halving

Bitcoin is gaining more as it recovers than BCH. Even if BCH follows Bitcoin in the next bull market it still is going to be worth significantly less when compared to the last bull market when it was coming out as the next bitcoin and BTC itself was suffering from 100 dollar transaction fees.

Why would anyone want to mine BCH after the halving if its value doesn't jump enough to make it worth it?

Well - if lots of miners leave because they decide BCH isn't worth mining, the hash rate will fall, the few miners left will mine more blocks and it will be worthwhile for them...
453  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: China can easily launch a coin while Facebook is having a hard time on: October 31, 2019, 03:50:25 PM
This is one area where I think China has an edge over USA, while we have to admit that Libra is not owned by the USA Government and one of the reasons why they are kicking against it is that it puts too much power in the hands of an individual who isn't part of th Government, I also have to admit that if it were the USA trying to launch their own cryptocurrency, it would take them a while lot of time to think and execute it cos it has to has through many books and go through a bunch of approvals from different arms of Government before it's eventually implemented.

I don't think they have an edge at all.

How many people will trust the new Chinese coin enough to buy it and hold it? It's just another attempt for the Chinese govt to control their population - this time with a crypto that has a public ledge and identities tied to addresses so they can track all money.
454  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin becoming a safehaven currency in Argentina on: October 31, 2019, 03:41:49 PM

Is this even feasible and how many will be taking a trip like these to take advantage of the situation make a few thousand dollars, there might be i do not know but these situation arises because of the limitations by the banking sector amid the financial crisis they are facing and it is really difficult to see these situations creeping up globally and worried when we will be hitting by these.

It's not about making a few thousand dollars. It's simply about preserving your money. How many crises has Argentina gone through now? It's happening practically every decade now.

It makes sense to buy bitcoin simply to make sure your savings don't lose value. Even if you can save $500, it's worth it compared to seeing your money become worthless AGAIN.
455  Economy / Economics / Bitcoin becoming a safehaven currency in Argentina on: October 31, 2019, 12:44:39 PM
https://www.newsbtc.com/2019/10/30/bitcoin-trades-at-large-premium-in-argentina-as-dollar-purchase-restrictions-set-in/

Quote
Bitcoin is trading at a large premium on cryptocurrency exchanges in Argentina. Demand remains high after the nation’s central bank announced a further tightening of a limit on the number of dollars an individual can purchase from it each month.

The policy essentially forces the people of Argentina to either sink of swim in an economy with a less than perfect track record. Well, it would, were it not for Bitcoin.

According to data taken from local cryptocurrency exchange Ripio, Bitcoin is trading at a large premium in Argentina. Whereas Coinmarketcap has the price of the leading digital asset at around $9,150 at the time of writing, Bitcoin is currently selling at the South American trading venue for ARS$633,862 ($10,578).

The nation has been in the grips of successive economic crises which have seen the value of the peso plummet. In an attempt to stabilise the currency, the central bank first limited the amount of dollars an individual could purchase each month to $10,000 in September. Just days ago, it drastically increased this restriction to just $100 in physical bank notes per month.

I guess the workaround is buying bitcoin and then taking a trip to another country where you can cash out in dollars using local bitcoins.
456  Economy / Economics / Re: Africa - Hidden Treasure for the world and bitcoin on: October 31, 2019, 12:28:30 PM

The condition of the African continent is really pitiful. More than just Bitcoin or even blockchain, the Africans should try to revisit their very basic personal values and cultures. I don't think Bitcoin or blockchain can address the most pressing issues of the land. There is widespread poverty, corruption, wars, illiteracy, lack of basic needs, warlordism, and many more social, political, and economic problems. Africa is blessed in terms of natural resources but look at how they fare in their daily lives. They should learn to unite and move forward as one blood. Right now, the foreign companies and governments are exploiting their resources indiscriminately without even improving the lives of those people around.

Africa is a giant continent, and some parts of Africa are doing extremely well.

Kenya is growing extremely fast - 5.6% per annum:

https://tradingeconomics.com/kenya/gdp-growth-annual

It's only the countries around the Sahara that are doing badly for obvious reasons (no water, extreme heat).
457  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Stable coin - a threat to the international monetary system and bitcoin on: October 30, 2019, 10:02:51 PM
Stable coins are like a closed book. I especially wait for Libra to be listed on the market. I wonder how much effect it will create in the sector. Libra can be the biggest enemy of fiat currencies about replacing them in the future.

I don't think Libra is going to lauch. Too much hostility to Zukerberg in both the US and EU. And even Switzerland raised it's eyebrows about Libra being based there (Facebook just announced it without clearing it with the Swiss). This thing is deadder than a dead donkey.

Some more info on the Bitmain battles:

https://www.coindesk.com/leaked-transcript-details-power-struggle-inside-bitcoin-mining-giant-bitmain

They were arguing about layoffs

Quote
2019 hasn’t been great for Bitmain, Wu said in Tueday’s internal meeting.

Even with bitcoin’s price rebound, Wu said the company didn’t fully seize the moment.

“Our mining equipment’s market share is declining,” he said. “Our mining pools’ dominance is also declining.”

Indeed, Bitmain’s major rival miner makers including Canaan, WhatsMiner and InnoSilicon have all been able to increase sales following the market boom this year.

Meanwhile, BTC.com and Antpool, Bitmain’s flagship mining pools, lost their long-time dominant positions to Poolin – founded by former BTC.com creators – and F2Pool. Poolin and F2pool are currently the top two mining pools in the world, based on the real-time hash rate distribution.

Wu wanted to cut costs and lay people off, Zhan didn't.
459  Economy / Economics / Re: So much for cashless society: cash is gaining in popularity on: October 30, 2019, 06:00:15 PM
I think this is linked to negative interest rates in certain parts of the world (the eurozone, Denmark, Japan). Why would you deposit money in a bank if the bank is going to charge YOU for depositing it?

Also - in 2017 the eurozone passed bank bail-in rules. That means that if you bank in the eurozone, and your bank fails, they will confiscate money from the depositors before there is a bail out by the govt. The idea is to reduce what the taxpayer has to pay.

If you are worried about the stability of the local banks, it makes sense to keep your cash at home in a safe deposit box, and beef up the security on your doors, windows and home in general.
460  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin Whales Are Selling BTC Before Market Crash: Peter Schiff on: October 30, 2019, 05:35:36 PM
This reminds me of December 2017 and January 2018 - loads of "important people" like Jamie Dimon of JP Morgan popped up to say bitcoin was a bubble and it was about to crash and so on.

Turns out they all had shorts in place and were talking their book.

When the crash finally happened, they popped up again to say they were making bitcoin investing available to their clients.

Bottom line: these types of people are always talking their book. Always ask what their agenda is. They're not making these statements because they care about the little people.
