4541  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitcoin-cli dumpprivkey Only legacy wallets are supported by this command on: April 21, 2023, 08:53:39 AM
I strongly advise you not to use paper wallets.
Paper wallets are fine, as long as you know what you're doing. That includes knowing that almost all websites that offer paper wallets will scam you. Even when you use them offline, they can produce a compromised private key if the source is compromised.
4542  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Can't Import Bitcoin Address to Electrum on: April 21, 2023, 08:48:05 AM
Electrum doesn't support importation of Uncompressed WIF Private key with P2WPKH-P2SH script flag because it's non-standard.
I never caught that part, while I've quoted Xynerise's post many times.
4543  Other / Meta / Re: 57 posts merited (by me) in just under 1 minute–What’s got over me? (v 33.0) on: April 21, 2023, 08:13:31 AM
Saying about LoyceV being the nicest person to hand out merits
He didn't say it like that Wink

Quote
could have been doubtful to me but I remembered way back when I needed about 14 merits to rank up to full member. LoyceV located me randomly and handed the 14 merits to me and that was the first and last time I go such a surprise if I am not mistaking.
It's my interpretation of theymos' post:
But undoubtedly some people got screwed by this, and if they have decent posts, by all means, give them the 250 or 500 merit that they need to rank-up.

Quote
I have never visited LoyceV report unmerited posts thread.
What I understand about merits is that you will work for it and chase it.
Even if you keep making quality posts without calling the attention of the merits sources to your quality posts, they will go unmerited.
Part of the reason I created that thread was to prove not many good posts don't get the Merit they deserve, but another part of the reason was to actually find those users who deserve it.
4544  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Apr 2023] Fees quite low! Use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs on: April 21, 2023, 07:59:17 AM
If there ever is an inevitable uptake by the wider community, they are going to switch off very quickly if they can't confirm their morning coffee purchase (notwithstanding LN).
On-chain morning coffee is a thing of the past, unfortunately. But you can still pay on-chain when you order an espresso machine Wink It's all about making the payment worth the fee, and $0.50 fee per coffee adds up quickly. I'm much more worried that opening a LN-channel will be too expensive too at some point. Even though I'm not against custodial LN, I wouldn't want that to be the only viable option. If it costs 0.001 BTC to open a LN channel (that's how expensive a transaction was at the peak in 2017), you need to open a very large channel to be worth it.

I think bitcoin might end up as a niche crypto being used for interbank style transfers of larger sums - which can be a good thing.
In a way, Bitcoin has always been a niche payment system Wink
4545  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Can't Import Bitcoin Address to Electrum on: April 21, 2023, 07:51:37 AM
my private key contains
Code:
p2wpkh-p2sh:5H.......
That looks okay. See this post for the differences:
For P2SH-P2WPKH addresses (Addresses starting with "3")
Just add p2wpkh-p2sh: directly in front of your  private key.
For example
Code:
p2wpkh-p2sh:5BitcoinPrivateKey
This should generate the corresponding p2wpkh-p2sh bitcoin address.

For P2WPKH addresses (Bech32, starting with 'bc1')
This time we'll add p2wpkh: in front of the private key.
For example
Code:
p2wpkh:5PrivateKey
This should generate the corresponding Bech32 address

Did you try to create a New Wallet in Electrum? File > New > Next > Import Bitcoin addresses or private keys > "your private key"?
4546  Economy / Reputation / Re: Dabs for to offer escrow service? on: April 21, 2023, 07:39:31 AM
Dabs has never given me a reason not to trust him in our eight years of doing business.
Good point. As far as I know, there haven't been any valid accusations so far.

He just did an escrow for me where he held $4000 for over a week because the terms of a contract needed hashing out: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5448307.0
At least this confirms his escrow service is still active.

hitting them in the wallet is the best way to get them to stop posting rubbish. (Which will make the forum better for everyone.)
From what I've seen over the years, getting rid of obvious spam makes some of the spammers switch to something that's much harder to detect.
When plagiarism got busted, they switched to a homograph attack. When that was made impossible (by theymos), they switched to word spinners. Now it's AI-spam. The main problem is: it becomes less and less obvious what's spam, and more time consuming to detect.
4548  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Securing Your Seed Phrase with Washers on: April 20, 2023, 10:49:31 AM
It's funny, isn't it? It is one thing when it is a hammer for the most ordinary driving of nails and quite another when a hammer is used to engrave the seed-phrase. This is some kind of magic: the hammer instantly becomes "golden" for the buyer. Do their marketers have the philosopher's stone that the alchemists were looking for to turn lead hammer into gold. Cheesy
Marketing has always worked like that. Many specialized shops sell items at several times the price of other shops, but people still buy them. I'm not judging them, it's totally fine. Supply and demand is a free market, and people love to buy "the idea".
4549  Other / Meta / Re: The J.A.R.V.I.S AutoReply Protocol Initiative (JARPI) - Powered by ChatGPT on: April 20, 2023, 10:33:12 AM
If it takes 10 or more "hits" to hide a post, I'm not going to waste my time tagging them.
I had the same thought. I think it might work best if the post immediately (or maybe with a second, user-specified threshold) disappears from your own view
Why waste time clicking individual posts, if you can Ignore everything from that user with one click?
If you want to share responsibility of hiding posts, it may be better to bring back the glowing Ignore button. It was removed before I joined, and I guess it was abused, but it might work in combination with custom Trust lists.

If it's redundant, why not report it to be deleted?
Because we can't rely on moderators deleting all low-quality posts.

We have ~20 staff versus 20 thousand shitposts per day.
It's more like 5000 posts per day, and not all of them are shitposts. But, instead of automatically hiding them, why not hook up with MindlessElectron to remove them Smiley
4550  Other / Meta / Re: The J.A.R.V.I.S AutoReply Protocol Initiative (JARPI) - Powered by ChatGPT on: April 20, 2023, 07:20:05 AM
On the topic of fighting shitposts, what I would love to see is a button that lets humans (with >= 500 earned merits) mark a post as "redundant":

If it's redundant, why not report it to be deleted?

If 10 unique members is a threshold that's too easy to game, then make it 15...
If it takes 10 or more "hits" to hide a post, I'm not going to waste my time tagging them. It would be much better if it's linked to the Trust list, so based on the user's who's judgement you trust already.
Barely any user has more than 10 negative tags, it's very unlikely a single post will reach that much. Plus, it means at least 10 people have to actually read a redundant post, which is a massive waste of time.

Some human interaction was replaced by electronic communication in the areas where it was most productive and useful.
In my experience, human interaction is replaced by a cheaper system. Some companies now have a computerized phone menu when you call them, and many of the options lead to a dead end where you don't get to talk to a human. It's cheaper, but not helpful.
4551  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: 0.01 BTC loan defaulted by (MakeMoneyBtc) on: April 20, 2023, 07:13:06 AM
When a person is not interested in his account, why would be he interested in paying back the loan.
To clear his conscience?
4552  Bitcoin / Wallet software / Re: Securing Your Seed Phrase with Washers on: April 20, 2023, 07:11:35 AM
the starter kit shown below is available for €149
That's a lot of money just to make it look nice. It's not as if you can use it to show off, so I'd rather go for a much cheaper hammer and letters.
Worse than the price is that the seller knows exactly what you need it for, unlike when you buy tools at a hardware store.
4553  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: [Apr 2023] Fees quite low! Use this opportunity to Consolidate your small inputs on: April 20, 2023, 07:01:46 AM
Hopefully the few remaining lightning channels I had that I've now closed with be cashed out soon.
They should be confirmed by now, mempool is empty for the first time in almost 2 months (ignore the drop on April 10, I think Johoe's mempool got reset).
My transaction that I created on March 4 just got confirmed! I guess this means the ordinal spammers gave up their little ponzi.
4554  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Is it possible to recover private keys? on: April 19, 2023, 06:31:47 PM
I loss the private keys on binance
You're not making any sense. And a quick look at your post history just convinced me it's a waste of time trying to help you.

I don't know if Newbie nani culi is banned already, but he should be:

Original:
It also appeared on The Blacklist, I think it was episode 22 of last season. When a transaction/trade was made using bitcoin. I think at that moment I thought of joining bitcoin and I did afterwards.

4557  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin in movies on: April 19, 2023, 04:21:35 PM
So please go ahead and post any kind of movie or series that uses crypto or Bitcoin as an important part for their storyline.
As much as I like Bitcoin, I think just using it in a movie fits better than making the entire movie revolve around it. I remember watching The Blacklist, where the bad guys were demanding ransom in Bitcoin, but the goodies turned the tables and made their own demand in Bitcoin. It's just a short gimmick, but enough to remind a large audience that Bitcoin exists.
4558  Other / Meta / Re: Request for Additional Sub-forums to be Added to the Site on: April 19, 2023, 11:19:33 AM
It's kind of funny how the first post a chronic bounty hunter will make is how to request the forum adding more boards
OP has discovered how to create New topics this month, and I bet he's hoping to earn Merit. So far, the only Merit he got was for advertising someone else's topic where it doesn't belong. It got him a spot on my ignore list.

On-topic: New boards are usually only created when there's a lot of posts on other boards that can be moved there.
4559  Other / Meta / Re: The J.A.R.V.I.S AutoReply Protocol Initiative (JARPI) - Powered by ChatGPT on: April 19, 2023, 10:19:30 AM
The target audience that is supposed to be reading these kind of posts are not so much Legendaries like you and I as it is for new members who've just arrived here <3 months ago.
How many of those members have a genuine question, and how many of them are just posting to either get Merit or at least Activity? The user you took as an example in your OP (cafter) is opening topics at least 10 times faster than me, and I doubt he's really interested in the answer. If he was, he would have just Googled it. It's not as if the answers are hard to find.

Well, with the mentality I see around the forum, I'm not surprised that the thread hasn't had a single merit so far and that most of the comments are negative.
Think of it this way: first, personal human interaction was replaced by electronic communication, and now we risk ending up only talking to electronics. Call me old-fashioned, but I don't like it. If I want to interact with a computer, I'll use a Search Engine or spambot myself.
4560  Other / Meta / Re: The J.A.R.V.I.S AutoReply Protocol Initiative (JARPI) - Powered by ChatGPT on: April 18, 2023, 05:46:07 PM
- It can alert users when they are multi-posting (most likely 3+) and tell them to place all replies in one post, linking to the relevant Bitcointalk rule.
That would be against one of these forum rules:
2. No off-topic posts.
~
29. Sending unsolicited PMs, including but not limited to advertising and flood, is not allowed.
Depending on how you're planning to do it, those rules cover it. It's better to report those posts.

I've whitelisted it, because you (NotATether) don't need those limitations. But that doesn't mean I like it Tongue

ChatGPT's reply:
J.A.R.V.I.S is on my ignore list already. I can't get myself to read this generic AI crap. It uses far too many words to tell nothing I didn't know yet.
