4602  Economy / Goods / Help me build reputation on coingig in exchange for VERY cheap silver. on: November 13, 2013, 07:29:24 PM
On bitmit i have a very strong reputation with the handle MarketAnarchist but now that bitmit is going out of business I'm having to move over to coingig where i have no reputation at all. If there is anyone out there who would like to help me rebuild that reputation in exchange i will sell you silver for cheaper than anywhere else on the Internet. (as far as i know)

4603  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Who to carry bitmit's mantle? on: November 13, 2013, 05:33:11 PM
I hope that someone will buy BitMit (I would if I had the money for it) and keep the website up and running. Losing BitMit would be a shame.

i suspect it was bought out by someone who wants to eliminate competition. i cant imagine any other reason why toaski wouldn't be advertising a sale and trying to squeeze every last drop of value out of it. i too hope that bitmit gets bought up, but i think we should go ahead and start work on a contingency plan.
4604  Economy / Service Discussion / Who to carry bitmit's mantle? on: November 13, 2013, 05:17:35 PM
As most of you are probably aware bitmit is closing down. The service that bitmit provided is pretty important to the heath of this community so this begs the question, where do we go now? I know there are alternatives so first lets make a comprehensive list and then weigh the positives and negatives of each choice.

4605  Economy / Speculation / Re: please tell me i've done good? on: November 13, 2013, 02:37:28 AM
so, i'm not that old, about 13, i don't have a job and i don't have a lot of savings to invest.......

after a huge amount of research, and in a moment of madness i withdraw from my college fund, which is technically mine although its my parents who pay into into it.

i've managed to buy 12 bitcoins. i'll be holding these indefinitely, even if the btc price drops 90%. no trading, although i may sell x amount to cover my expenses if things go well.

please reassure me i've done good?

and is 12 btc a good position?

and no lectures.

thanks

Honestly, I think it wasn't a smart thing to use your future college money for that without the consent of your parents. I am superbullish on bitcoin and I believe it holds a bright future, but many things can happen and there is always a real possibility your bitcoins will become worthless. What will you do if suddenly your college fund becomes worthless? There's a reason why many people advise others not to invest more than you can afford to lose. Can you afford to lose this? I'm not sure how rich your parents are, but I'm sure they won't be too pleased when they find out. Oh well either way it will be a good life lesson for you to learn, I have to admit that if I was 13 and learned about bitcoin I would probably try to scramble for money everywhere to buy some. Tongue I wouldn't have gone all in at the current price though, I would have bought my bitcoins slowly over the course of several months to make sure I didn't go all in at the top of this huge rally.

thanks

i don't want to go to college. if the shtf, i'll get a job at 16. and maybe travel.

i think this is a wise choice if done property however you are choosing the non conventional path as such it will be the harder path. consequently you do not have the option of waiting around for your future to come to you. If you chose this path you MUST become an adult now, today, not tomorrow, you have to start building real skills with real value granting yourself real human capital. If you aren't ready to crack down and start building real human capital today, if you just want to joke around and play yu-gi-oh with your friends and wait for the future to come to you, than you should probably not be trying to break the mold, you should probably just go to college. That is the cost, but the benefit is that when you are grown and your friends are all miserable cogs in the machine you will be ruling the world (in a metaphorical sense of course libertarians don't rule things other than themselves).

also another thing i think is important and i don't think you will ever hear it from another adult anywhere. if this is really the life you want than good grades offer you literally no utility. as such every single point above 70 is energy and effort wasted, energy and effort that could have been used to build real human capital. if this is the path you want, than all things being equal, you shouldn't be putting any effort into making good grades. however THIS ONLY APPLIES IF you are 100% dedicated to this path. if there is any hesitation, any laziness, any lack of discipline, any yu-gi-oh playing (other than maybe an hour a day or something, every human needs SOME brakes), than you better not ruin your future by flunking out of high school for no reason.

anyway this is an off topic rant i know, but i think its important because you Aren't going to find very many adults who support a decision like that, so since you happened to stumble across one i thought i should speak up.
4606  Economy / Speculation / Re: please tell me i've done good? on: November 12, 2013, 11:59:41 PM
if the price were still 100 dollars i would say heck yes. at 400 dollars I'm worried for you. though this newest price increase does feel more natural than the rallies that preceded it, the way it has leveled off and is holding steady is a good sign that this rally is the product of fundamentals more so than greed.

when you start to feel scared just remember that (basically) every single person who ever bought at an all time high before today has made money.
4607  Other / Off-topic / Re: Turning my life around on: November 12, 2013, 06:09:06 PM
sure, im actually really good at saving so maybe i can help. here is what i would do.

for 1 month carry around a little notepad with you everywhere you go and take note of everything you spend money on. at the end of the month go through the list and separate essentials from non essentials. add up all of the essentials and that is your budget for next month.

when you get your paycheck set aside enough to cover those necessary expenses that you calculated from the essentials on that list, and immediately go to the silver shop and invest all of the money that you believe that you should have available to save before you have the opportunity to spend it.

next you just have to learn to recoil in horror at the prospect of taking a hit from premiums at converting your silver back into cash. that way your repulsion will outweigh the benefits of consuming unnecessarily.

using this method my wife and i were able to dedicate more than 70% of our income to savings and according to the government we are poor. the trick is setting up the situation where you only have a certain amount of money to spend. it will cause you to think critically about the most efficient ways to allocate resources. so for example while shopping for food for the week at the grocery store you will literally be faced with the prospect of not eating anything on friday if you don't make wise choices, which then of course you will just make wise choices and eat on friday.

also not all woman are that way, my wife is a very good saver, we police each others spending habits. perhaps you should look at what sort of image you are projecting if these are the sorts of woman you are attracting. are you baiting your hook with promises of wealth? are you enticing them with nice cars and sharp cloths? well what sort of woman do you think that is going to attract? suppose instead you have on totally normal cloths and you are driving a 10 year old car, providing no information or clues that would indicate to that woman that you have wealth and instead you use your wits to attract her. what sort of woman do you think that is going to attract?
4608  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin at the US Senate on: November 12, 2013, 05:48:37 PM
Let me add a caveat - If you want to make sure Bitcoin never becomes successful keep standing by and watching while people like TradeFortress and Theymos screw everything up.  If I was trying to set up a legitimate exchange I would be absolutely out of my mind furious after what those 2 have done.

what has theymos done?
4609  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin at the US Senate on: November 12, 2013, 01:42:41 AM
Senate don't give a damn, they just wanna destroy BTC Grin

there are five items on the senates agenda which make the above a ridiculous statement.

1- how can we get revenue from this
2- how can we get revenue from this
3- how can we get revenue from this
4- how can we get revenue from this
5- how can we get revenue from this

we can only pray that they will be so shortsighted. let them try to benefit on net by taxing bitcoin while they are simultaneously losing their monopoly control over the issuance of currency, lets see who wins out on that exchange  Grin
4610  Other / Off-topic / Re: World Of Warcraft is it worth playing? on: November 12, 2013, 01:28:25 AM
it used to be but not so much anymore. it used to be challenging and fun, you would have to collaborate with group members, make a strategy, mark targets, talk about your plan. now you can almost literally roll your face on the keyboard and have all the epics. so sad what it has become. what you might consider is playing vanilla or burning crusade on a private server if you can find one with good scripting.

oh also it looks like ever-quest next is shaping up to be the first true third generation mmo. you might want to wait for that.
4611  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Found old Bitcoin wallet on: November 11, 2013, 07:10:13 AM
a wallet is just a collection of private keys. you just print out the private keys. try the export function in your bitcoind or qt client, or check out bitaddress.org
4612  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitmit - Bitcoin shopping mall - Bitcoin market place - Bitcoin auction house on: November 11, 2013, 07:07:55 AM
wtf. They had other people trying to buy it from them and didnt even bauther asking them....  Shocked
Bitmit probably got bought out by ebay.

That would explain the no-answer-policy.

Absolutely the most plausible explanation. Yeah, makes sense Grin

It doesnt? Lets hear your take.

Not good for consumer choice, but it is a very effective way of staying as the top dog for ebay...

idk the seen is obvious but economics is all about the unseen. if ebay goes around buying up competition this creates incentive for entrepreneurs to make new businesses, in the hopes of being bought out, thus adding to consumer choice. on net the effect could be positive, negative or it could be a wash, i dont know really, just something to think about.  Smiley
4613  Economy / Speculation / Re: Whats happening to BTC ? on: November 11, 2013, 02:45:15 AM
There were a lot of coins out there that wanted to move on to these exchanges, but they wernt moving as fast as the chinese were buying. This caused liquidity problems which sent the price higher than would otherwise have been achieved if all of the coins that wanted to move onto the exchanges could have moved onto the exchanges more quickly. after a period of time balance between buyers and sellers was restored and that is where we are now. a more realistic price that reflects real supply and demand rather than an inblance in the time that it takes to buy off an exchange vs get coins onto an exchange.

of course this is just speculation, but i think its a pretty good guess since at one point btc china was as low as 2000 btc in liquidity.
4614  Other / Politics & Society / Re: China's adoption of BTC on: November 09, 2013, 03:50:19 PM
Good point, maybe the word "scare" was the wrong word to use, but nevertheless - I've always been told that we're fortunate to be growing up in a democratic society as opposed to a communist state such as China. I still believe that to be true, but when you see China going for bitcoins like there's no tomorrow, whilst the west would rather be indebted to the banking cartels and actually fund action to regulate something like bitcoin - it instills a little bit of fear, fear that if the western governments really want to get rid of bitcoin - they will. They'll create some bullshit regulations and bills. I don't live in the US, but over here in the UK, we're the monkeys playing monkey-see monkey-do. We're quick to follow US policy.

Communism and democracy are not a dichotomy. Democracy is a political system and communism is an economic system. autocracy is the opposite of democracy and capitalism is the opposite of communism.

So i think you either mean to say: "I've always been told that we're fortunate to be growing up in a democratic society as opposed to an autocratic state such as China" or; "I've always been told that we're fortunate to be growing up in a capitalist society as opposed to a communist state such as China".
4615  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Silk Road 2.0 bad news for Bitcoin? on: November 09, 2013, 06:58:18 AM
Silkroad 2.0, yeah nice FBI honeypot. Good luck with using that.  Cheesy

thats my thinking. i read somewhere that some of the core developers from silk road 1 would be building it. wouldn't dpr be able to finger those people? it seems like it wouldnt be very smart of them to get back into the business unless of course they were returning as double agents.
4616  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: If you used Brainwallet.org - MUST READ! - Security Breach! on: November 09, 2013, 03:37:28 AM
Is your passphrase just too simple?
Any passphrase you can memorize is almost too simple by definition.

na not really. you just combine a long low entropy password with a short high entropy password plus something in the public record. you can remember the former because it uses real words and sentences and the latter because it isn't too long and the public record element adds security for almost no cost (in terms of effort to memorize remember it since all you have to remember is its location). combined you get the best of both worlds. they arnt going to crack it with a dictionary attack or a brute force and some sort of hybrid technique would not be very effective.
4617  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Found old Bitcoin wallet on: November 08, 2013, 09:45:10 PM
i dont think you can import a wallet.dat file on blockchain.info.

  • back up your existing wallet.dat
  • navigate to your bitcoin-qt app data directory and then delete the wallet in there
  • copy the old wallet into your bitcoin app data directory
  • open your client and send the funds to your normal wallet
  • delete the old wallet and past back in your normal one from where ever you backed it up
4618  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitmit - Bitcoin shopping mall - Bitcoin market place - Bitcoin auction house on: November 08, 2013, 05:12:15 PM
Bitalo is working hard to replace bitmit.

In our marketplace we are trying to combine multiple bitcoin services including a marketplace for physical goods and services such as bitmit did.

The speciality is and major difference to all other sites is, that we also offer extremely secure multi signature wallets where users do not give up control over their bitcoins and neither the admins nor any hackers would have access to coins. Even buyer and seller can transfer the coins without our consent, as 2 out of 3 parties need to approve a transaction. We are only needed in case of a scam.

We are still facing some trouble with implementation and regulatory issues, but we are about to solve them as soon as possible.

You can take a look on Bitalo.com or at our beta page: beta.bitalo.com

PS: Bitalo is proud sponsor of london expo bitcoin conference and will introduce their innovative concept to the world:
http://bitcoinexpo.co.uk/

you have some great ideas here so its all going to come down to implementation. can you make it polished, well organized, and (mostly) bug free?

also instead of just having you guys do escrow, have you thought about allowing users to sell arbitration services on the website its self just like other goods? with a strong reputation system and multisig functionality i think it could definitely work and it would allow you guys to spend more time developing the website rather than playing judge judy all day.
4619  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Bitmit - Bitcoin shopping mall - Bitcoin market place - Bitcoin auction house on: November 08, 2013, 05:02:38 AM
we have been here before. just auction bitmit on the front page of bitmit. the person who pays the most will be the person who believes he can get the most value out of it so it will then be relocated to its highest value application. this is how a market economy works. someone who believes they can pay $50,000 for bitmit and still make a profit is someone who has big plans, someone who has great ideas for how to take bitmit to great places. if that person is wrong than it will be sold again and again until someone buys it who isn't wrong.

please tosaki. do this right, it doesn't matter who runs it so long as the person who runs it proves that he believes that it is as valuable as we believe it is. please please please auction it off to the highest bidder.

to anyone else who is reading this, do what you can to communicate this message to tosaki.

I basically agree with you except for the part where bitmit holds more than the auction value in users' funds that the winner might just grab and run.

As much as I always bitched Tosaki about his secretive change of ownership of both the site and the "tosaki" account here on the forum I must admit my worries were unfounded if bitmit comes to a good end now. I hope that skeptical persons like me were not a big contributing factor to stop work on this great project.

I hope that some reputable player (coinbase, bitpay, …) publicly buys bitmit and not some shady "for obvious reasons we try to be anonymous" entity.

it is HIGHLY unlikely that an auction would not raise more than bitmit was holding in user funds. basically it would just be factored into the bids. so if the market valued bitmit at 100 bitcoins without reserves of user funds than if it had 200 bitcoins in reserves of user funds than the market would pay ~ 300 bitcoins because who ever bought it would just get 200 of his bitcons back right away.

of course since it is technically possible it would probably be wise to put a reserve on the auction of atleast more than it was holding in reserves at the time.
4620  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Silk Road 2.0 bad news for Bitcoin? on: November 07, 2013, 10:21:01 PM
So how many of you have written your representative about bitcoin? I would suggest that your efforts writing them will yield more fruit than posting here. The regulations that evolve around bitcoin will reflect your inaction, not the tyranny of government.

quoting this for its obvious importance.

The time for silence has ended. Please contact your legislators now. This is nothing short of a shot across Bitcoin's bow.

yea and by not dressing up in spandex and fighting crime im practically raping woman in dark allies myself Roll Eyes

yea no thanks, instead of getting on my knees and "pleading" with the tyrants to not violate my rights, i think ill dedicate my effort towards learning to program better so maybe i can help to make this sort of technology more resistant to attacks. or you know one of 1000 other things that might actually be useful instead of deluding yourself into believing "congressman" gives 1/10,000th of shit about your preferences.

"call your congressmen", so pathetic. oh lawdie please dont beat me so hard massa. grow some balls, asking someone for permission to have some of your rights is just another way of giving your rights away.
