theymos says only 2 weeks after the scam happened can you then ask for scammer tag
I usually say "a week or two" of discussion for cases that aren't straightforward.

|
I don't have time to read 50 pages of topics to figure this stuff out. Post a topic in this section with all of the relevant info summarized for me and I'll look into.
When someone gets a scammer tag quickly, it means that their case was straightforward and I knew about it or it was brought to my attention.

I scammer-tagged retropcdos because he's very close to BTC Guy in IP space and I found his posts to be suspicious. It's possible he's just unlucky IP-wise and I misjudged his posts, though. I'll look into it more tomorrow.

Oops! Of course I meant to say September 6-7 (not October 7-8). Right. September 7, 2012 @ 5 am UTC.

I agree with BadBear. When scammers first started appearing on the forum, many people asked me to ban them. I was unwilling to do so, since the scammers were on-topic, not trolling, etc. But users were unprepared for this hands-off policy and kept get scammed, so I felt obligated to do something. I did the absolute minimum possible: I added a little warning under the names of proven scammers so they weren't able to continue scamming clueless users. That's all I'm going to do. I don't want to ban scammers from the community. I don't want to tag suspicious people. I don't want to set up "courts" or complex rules. Someone else should deal with that. no excuse for it not being applied to those who operated Bitcoinica and who continue to operate Intersango. This is a very complex case. Much more so than the cases of MNW or Pirate. Pirate for example (he didn't have one) during the grace period he was given.
Actually, Pirate was VIP. It would have been good to remove that status during the grace period, but I didn't think of doing that. The forum only supports showing one membergroup title, so scammers automatically lose VIP/staff/etc. status.

Согласен. 5+ сообщений и 4+ часов онлайн могут легко накрутить, просто переписываясь с со своими же клонами в течение 4 часов. Да и дата регистрации должна быть не позже хотя бы августа. Yeah, but I set the registration date requirement to before I announced I was creating a voting page, so I feel like it'd be kind of difficult to acquire fake accounts. Да, но я установил требование о регистрации дату, прежде чем я объявил я создавал страницу голосования, поэтому я чувствую, что это был бы вид трудно приобрести поддельные счета.

So the scammer tag is speculative, not clearly defined and assigned on a case by case basis.
Right.

Theymos,
Can we get a clarification on the Scammer tag. Mathew N Wright may have welched on his bet but did he actually scam any one. Is Mathew N Wright actually in possession of any of the funds from the bets? If not I would think he can be labeled a welcher, but not a scammer. A little clarification would be appreciated.
Thanks.
He clearly reneged on his contract, which caused several people to suffer losses. If he had won the bet, he would have received BTC even though he had no intention of paying if he lost. He's a scammer.

Dust wins. Both Matthew and pirateat40 conceded defeat in their respective bets. Where shall I send the 200 BTC, dust? -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----

Speaking of which, Matthew still appears to be showing up as Hero Member as well as a Scammer. theymos, is it possible to fix that or is it baked into the forum software somehow?
I can't easily remove that without modifying his post count.
|
|
|
Please REMOVE him permanently from the staff of this forum.
I did.

Matthew committed fraud, plain and simple. While I'm personally only disappointed that I'm not getting 400 BTC, others used this bet as their main method of hedging against Pirate or made other investment decisions based on this bet because they trusted Matthew. Matthew has demonstrated that he is unworthy of anyone's trust. I guess I was right the first time. I have no confidence in [Matthew]'s sense of morality, and I will never trade with him.

In another thread you said that database dumps can be downloaded by other admins, but only you, Gavin, Satoshi and Sirius can decrypt them. What does "direct database access" refer to? Any admin can query the db directly and e.g. dump it and/or read PMs?
It's not about ST being an admin now; it's just a general question which popped up in my mind when I read this announcement.
Global moderators can download the encrypted database backups. Admins and past admins (Gavin, Satoshi, Sirius, me, and now justmoon) can decrypt them -- they therefore have complete access to the database and can read PMs, etc. Justmoon and I can also query the live database. How many admins do we have on bitcointalk now?
Two. Gavin recently decided to stop being an admin.

You're going to imply that the Don Shrents who owns multiple bitcoin based websites is different than the Don Shrents here on the BitcoinTalk forums...?
https://i.imgur.com/KRt2h.jpgI know for certain that DonShrents is not Don Shrents.

Here are the names I have seen so far (and I THINK they are all actually the same person):
Bruce Wagner DonShrents Trendon Shavers Pirateat40 Atlas
Trendon Shavers is pirateat40, but the others are different. DonShrents and Atlas are just trolls -- they haven't scammed anyone.

According to popular opinion, that guy with the HungerCoin thing is more trustworthy than PatrickHarnett.
I kinda feel like iamtheone just has a bad business plan and isn't intentionally setting up a Ponzi. Though I could be wrong. (I don't think PatrickHarnett is running a Ponzi, either.)

Stefan Thomas (justmoon) is now a forum administrator. He can therefore access the database directly and see IP addresses, etc. Operator of We Use Coins and BitcoinJS.org, Stefan Thomas is a long-time Bitcoin user who is highly trusted by the community.
Thanks for helping out!
