3901  Other / Meta / Re: Any way to get rid of threads from my "new replies to your posts" area? on: March 28, 2013, 06:53:47 PM
Instead of clicking "show new replies to your posts", click "watchlist".

DrG sent me some contact info, but I have not verified it at all.
3904  Other / Meta / Re: Abuse of power by Moderator? "Mods Gone Wild" on: March 27, 2013, 04:27:20 PM
The French moderators are in charge of the French section. If they don't want auto-translated stuff there, that's fine with me.
3905  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: [To Theymos and Mods] An honest concern (all trolling aside) on: March 27, 2013, 12:25:15 PM
I don't really follow this stuff, but I've been hearing a lot of positive news about BFL recently, so I tend to think that it's probably not a scam. I'll reevaluate this if they haven't produced anything concrete by their current deadline.

While I might refuse their advertising, giving them a scammer tag is more complicated. I'm not sure what obligations and deadlines preordering implies. They'd probably have to stop all contact for several months for me to give them a scammer tag. I recommend against preordering anything from anyone in the Bitcoin community.
3906  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: PSA about Butterfly Labs what to say? on: March 27, 2013, 05:25:39 AM
BTW Theymos:  Could you look into who renamed mumu GalaxyASIC and why?  Something stinks.

I did. I almost always change names on request.
3907  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: PSA about Butterfly Labs what to say? on: March 27, 2013, 04:46:35 AM
I suggest you build a eye catching text that [supposedly] leads people to a great deal for BFL hardware

Ads can't be deceptive like this.

Before anyone suggests it: For legal reasons and to avoid too much drama, you can't make assertions of fact that are potentially damaging and possibly false. For example, you can't say, "BFL is a scam," or, "BFL will never deliver." You can say, "BFL is probably a scam," or, "BFL is unlikely to deliver." OP's text is acceptable.
3908  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 76 on: March 27, 2013, 03:54:50 AM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads are allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Seven of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 7 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 7 slots. If the two highest bids are 7 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 6 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

The notation "2 @ 5" means 2 slots for 5 BTC each. Not 2 slots for 5 BTC total.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.25.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- I will end the auction at an arbitrary time no more than 12 days from now. (I will probably end the auction 1-3 days before the ads are scheduled to go up.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If these rules are confusing, look at some of the past forum ad auctions to see how it's done. I also post periodic status updates which should help make things clear.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.

Auction ended.
3910  Other / Off-topic / Re: 4chan.org taken offline by authorities on: March 27, 2013, 03:11:02 AM
This sort of thing has happened before when a country tries to ban a site via BGP, but their ban propagates to other countries. It's a terrible system. That may be what happened here.
3911  Other / Off-topic / Re: 4chan.org taken offline by authorities on: March 27, 2013, 02:48:45 AM
Are you anywhere near Turkey?
3912  Other / Meta / Re: Why do some people have highlighted 'Ignore' buttons? on: March 27, 2013, 02:26:35 AM
It is hopefully possible to speak your mind and still avoid ignore highlighting. I intend for people to only be highlighted if they are often overly aggressive, rude, trollish, or off-topic. None of which have anything to do with the ideas themselves, but the way that they are presented.

3915  Other / Meta / Re: Get Donator status by donating 10 BTC on: March 26, 2013, 03:49:17 PM
I said a long time ago that the prices would remain the same, so I can't change this policy now in any case.

Quote
Are the new ranks' price going to be variable or adjusted every x days or months depending on BTC price?

Maybe. I haven't thought about it much yet. The forum doesn't need donations, so I'm not going to create another donator level soon.
3916  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: is sha256 for a private key really secure? on: March 25, 2013, 06:21:50 PM
Huh

Is this statement based on the possibility that the output SHA-256 may not be evenly distributed?

The output of SHA-256 is less random than random data. Also, there are almost certainly fewer than 232 distinct possible outputs given 32-bit input.
3917  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: is sha256 for a private key really secure? on: March 25, 2013, 05:07:46 PM
It's probably fine, though it'd be a little more secure to just use the random data as a private key directly.
3918  Other / Meta / Re: Get Donator status by donating 10 BTC on: March 25, 2013, 02:42:02 PM
I intend to add new, cheaper donator ranks. I won't decrease the price of the old ranks, though I may rename them (to "Donator+" and "VIP+" or something like that).

I have seen someone else do it

You may have seen images (which aren't allowed anymore for new signatures), but certainly not an iframe.
