So did you down vote me?

I don't remember which actually. You've been around a while and perhaps are 'trustworthy', yet I disagree with a lot of your posts philosophically (your discussions with bitcoin2cash come to mind, where I consistently agree with him, not you).

That probably means I up-voted you.

Lol  That's hilarious.  I guess it pays to play the devil's advocate.

I'm pretty sure I'm not on anything right now, but reading this thread makes me think otherwise...
483  Other / Meta / Re: [applaud]/[smite] system? on: May 09, 2011, 12:03:39 AM
Why do you all take this so seriously?

It's a rating.  On the internet.  Given by random people.

So you get a -1?  So what?  Get over it.

Before the rating system was implemented, I heard lots of people asking for it.  It was implemented.  I think to myself that it can be a good tool if people take it seriously.  Now people are complaining about it, and even the members who should know better are using it like a game.  So whatever, I'm not going to lose any sleep about it.  But don't fault me for trying to understand what's going on.
484  Economy / Economics / Re: "Bitcoins are not good for anything besides trading." on: May 08, 2011, 11:29:04 PM
Besides papercraft, what can you make that is useful to humans with a 100 USD bill?

Prophecy, apparently.   Tongue  http://youtu.be/HpskvfE06yw
485  Other / Meta / Re: [applaud]/[smite] system? on: May 08, 2011, 11:05:25 PM
I registered a new account and will not post with my normal account until this ridiculous rating system is abolished. It is sad to see that some people would go around and give everybody a -1 for no good reason.
What is even more sad is that they would have to be established forum members with more than 250 posts, so they should really know better. Angry

I decided after reading this thread to do just that, but I have a good reason: To help show how out of alignment with reality it is.

I smited all the most trustworthy people I could think of, and applauded all the jerks and newbies.

That's a pretty jerk thing to do.  How does that show how out of alignment it is?  The only way the system will work is if people actually take it seriously.  If even the established members like you act this way, then yes there really is no point.  But the only thing you are doing is creating a self-fulfilling prophecy...

So did you down vote me?
486  Other / Meta / Re: [applaud]/[smite] system? on: May 08, 2011, 09:51:03 PM
I don't see anything positive coming from this either. I think it'll just reinforce the circle-jerk that goes on in some threads.  I frequently clash with bitcoin2cash, caveden and that-golden-apple-guy-whos-name-i-forgot on various issues, among others. I enjoy the discussions, but I'm pretty sure I'll be moderated to oblivion by those who would prefer not to see different opinions. Not saying that the guys mentioned would do so, but I do feel that I'm in a minority with my opinion here, and that might not be a good thing for my karma.  Sad

To be fair I don't think those guys will vote you down for disagreeing with them, they don't seem to be that type.  The rating system could be useful if people gave feedback on why they rate people, but they don't.  I've been trying to inform people why I rate them as I would want others to do the same.  But I just got a -1 and am not sure why.  Tongue  Oh well.
487  Other / Off-topic / Re: Political compass! (who believes what?) on: May 08, 2011, 09:42:55 PM

I wasn't attempting to be incendiary, so if I came across as insulting to BCEmporium, I apologize.  Sometimes I take things too seriously?  Tongue
488  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Are there any "communist" pools? on: May 08, 2011, 11:45:28 AM
This went way off-topic.
It did! Back on topic, Slush's pool is advertised as (well, it's forum thread advertises it as...) "cooperative mining". I realise that there are different models of cooperative enterprise, but pools seem to be fairly good examples of "workers and consumers cooperatives": profits are shared between members and employees. That seems fairly close to the original ideals of communism (and fairly distant from the Marxist-Leninist reality...) to me.

Except that it is more in line with the corporate model: the amount of shares (hash power) you have determine your profit.  A communist pool would reward you according to your need, not your ability, right?  Smiley
I don't need any bitcoins :-) And isn't "from each according to their ability, to each according to their need" specifically Marxist, not necessarily communist per se. This is the trap I'm trying to highlight: "we" identify communism with Karl Marx's ideas and with Marxist-Leninist states, states which claimed to be only socialist, and claimed to want - one day in a happy future (!) - to be communist.

Ha, ha, ha, I probably don't know what I'm talking about then.  I thought Marx was the dude who invented communism?  So what is the main tenet of communism? It seems like you can't have communism without the state because someone has to distribute the resources to the appropriate people and make sure the greedy capitalist pigs aren't owning property.   Undecided

Edit:  You also don't need a computer, or more than one or two pairs of clothes, or more than 1400 calories a day.  Smiley  The difference between needs and wants can be rather arbitrary; at least when it comes to specific amounts.  We need food, but how much?

Dood, that refund was incredibly generous and great customer service.  I'm giving you a +1 rating because I want to support good businessmen like you.

Thanks TS, it's appreciated.

Also, I played your game twice.  Spent 0.5 BTC each time and won the second time.  Tongue  I think I'll stop there....

I'm willing to discuss this if you are still interested, but I would like a little more information.  Let me know if you are still in the market for a loan.  Smiley

495  Economy / Marketplace / Re: The Bitcoin Sun - Looking for Subeditors [10 BTC / week] on: May 08, 2011, 10:25:29 AM

Which two positions are uncontested?  Also, are you requiring the editors to contract for a certain period of time, or is it on a month by month basis?  I enjoy writing, and I enjoy bitcoins so I am interested in being involved.  If not as an editor, perhaps as a freelance writer, and at the very least as a dedicated reader.    Cheesy
496  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Are there any "communist" pools? on: May 08, 2011, 10:15:05 AM
This thread makes me lol though.  I love it when communists/socialists try to make things work in a real economic model.

Yeah, like the current economic model is perfect (US government having to take socialist measures to prevent their economy from collapsing).
Better than communism.  Wink

Better for Freeriders (read: bankers) Wink

Ha ha, the bankers certainly are doing very well.  The current system is horrible, but I think the Soviet Union showed that it (the current system) is still better than a State-run communist system.  Perhaps not for much longer.  End the Fed.  Smiley

People from the Americas always refer to the USSR as THE model for communism, which was horrible in its implementation as a communist system. They also don't consider what happened before the red revolutions that led to the development of communist system. You see the same patterns coming back these days (just like the return of fascism in Europe). History is repeating itself.

Can you give an example of a State-run communist system that did better?  China was an apalling disaster as well, and only started to grow strong when they allowed some economic reforms in.
497  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: May 08, 2011, 10:12:19 AM
Wow, I am so jealous.  I've missed the bitcoin mining movement and shall regret it all my life.  Sad

Anyway, awesome rigs, guys, I enjoyed seeing pictures and the video too.  You guys are keeping our bitcoin system strong!

499  Economy / Economics / Re: Job creation and stimulus on: May 08, 2011, 09:40:26 AM

Whether waste outweighs the benefit of extra circulation is entirely up for debate.  Government does ensure more jobs for more people, but at what cost to the public who was already working?

That, I believe, is the right question.  Here is an article from the Mises site that talks about government spending and its affects on the economy.  It's rather long so I've included a couple paragraphs of what I feel summarizes his main points:

"Government, in fact, is a large disequilibrating force on the market. It forcibly redistributes economic goods, removing them from a process of economization and instead investing them toward the realization of less important, or less preferred, ends. In other words, it distorts the continuous process of coordination."

He goes on to say:

"Whether some degree of government is necessary to allow the market to operate, while being outside the scope of this essay, deserves commentary. The belief that government is necessary to at least guarantee individuals's property rights is not uncommon. However, knowing that property rights are absolutely essential for a working coordination process, it seems difficult to think that individuals themselves would consider the allotment of resources toward the end of securing their property rights as having secondary importance to something else — especially since the attainment of "something else" may require secure property rights."

And finally:

"Overall, we can safely conclude that government spending causes more harm than good; it redistributes the means of production toward the attainment of ends considered inferior by the individuals who make up the society that government is allegedly acting to improve."

I think that last sentence pretty well describes my opinion.  In the question of "more bottom up or more top down" I am definitely supporting the "bottom up" philosophy.
500  Economy / Economics / Re: Taxes are theft....are they? on: May 08, 2011, 09:23:21 AM

In keeping with my ratings policy of informing those I rate (plus OR minus):

I'm giving trentzb a +1, because he's been articulate, polite and engaging in our conversation about taxes.  Also, no one can accuse me of trying to get a reciprocal vote from him, because he doesn't have enough posts and is a long way from having enough.   Cheesy
