We could be looking at the end of the IBM dominance for big finance machines if this model for massively distributed/networked capacity takes off.

I never really thought about it like that. Interesting.

Quote from: reeses

Left on "auto", it swings from 65-94% and maintains 78-91 degrees C, with the internally-venting GPU hotter than the one that exhausts out the slot.

Hmm, carefull there. 91C is a IMHO too high a temp. If you can keep it within the 68 to 80 range it would extend the life span of the card. Once again your future water cooling kit would take care of that without any problems. You'll see the GPU (at full load) run below 60C for sure.

Here are some of my rigs.  1 rig is in a data center and thus I can't exactly take pictures of it from here Tongue  Another is my roommates 5770, nothing special to see there.

The shelf computers has actually very good air flow, because there is about 8 feet of open space above them that opens into a hole in the floor of a closet in the 2nd floor.  I leave the closet door cracked and the heat escapes up the stairs to the 3rd floor where it escapes through a roof window.  Yes my house is really weird.

Not shown:
a 4U rackmount somewhere in San Jose with 2x5870s
another small machine with a 5770.

I'm at about 4.1Ghash/s right now.

Thanks  Grin The case is an "Eve Scythe" cheap Japanese case I picked up in Akiba. Took a dremel to it and maximized airflow for the stock components. Then just did a bare minimum build to get the cards mining.

Here's the fun part: I live in a small place so noise is a big issue. I found a nice little crawlspace that is exposed to a bit of outside air and has a built in air duct. Here is the result: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9rELnaTk_g0

Don't try this at home, haha. Temps are below 90 for now, we'll see what happens in the summer. I found the key is not so much pumping in cold air as it is pumping out the hot air, so the air duct is a godsend. But now my roommate complains the bathroom has become warmer and smells a bit shittier...  Kiss

Me 2. My miners are air purification devices. Once the crazy summer temps roll around they'll be air incineration devices. No air borne particle or germ stands a chance! muahaha Tongue

Well aren't you clever bitcoin 2 cash. The amount of know it all on this forum is amazing. What I mean is I do not pay by the kwh so power doesn't have to factor into my mining costs.

I apologize if I sounded presumptuous. I was just pointing out that very few things in this world are free.

OVerLoRDI, what speccs is there for the 3x5870 rig?

Some MSI board that had 2x pci-e 16 slots, an XFX 650 PSU, sempron, 1gb DDR3.  I'm waiting on another motherboard, I don't think the video card on top of the binder is going to be a permanent.. it might be if I buy another 5870.... but then I'd need another PSU.  I'm using a Corsair 500 watt to supplement the 650 watt.  I might be able to get away with running the whole system on the 650 watt.. but that is dangerously close... so I might buy a bigger PSU, make the 3x setup permanent, then recycle the 650 into another dual 5870 machine.

What goes into that modification to run the 5870 through the PCIEx1 slot? From what I understand you..
Buy a PCIEx1 extension.
Cut the end of the extension so the card fits (making sure not to sever any connections).
Insert card and plug in PCIE 6pin power cables.
Then run it?

No extra power needed for a 5870? Does this have to be done in linux or can windows pick up on it too?

I went for a water-cooled setup in a rackmount case.  Next step is to throw it in the rack and connect it to the hot tub. Smiley
