481  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Fast and Private Transactions with QuadrigaCX Online Exchange on: January 08, 2014, 12:04:42 PM
The beta version of QuadrigaCX's online trading platform is live and ready to use! The directors are Co-op members and extremely committed to your privacy, requiring verification only for high-risk deposit/withdrawal methods to prevent fraud. QuadrigaCX is an international exchange, but Canadian through and through, and uses $CAD as its base fiat unit. Other cryptocurrencies should be added later--check it out at https://quadrigacx.com/. All withdrawals are initiated within 24 hours, for those of you still reeling from Gox.

See here.
Why

Why is what I quoted. Did I miss a post fully and thoroughly outlining who these nameless "directors" are, what qualifies them to be running a trading platform, how said platform has been planned, what measures towards security have been taken, and so forth, which you also failed to link to in this announcement? 'Cause if so, kindly point me there. Otherwise, this is yet another empty plea for trust and money, and if you'd like to bridge the gap between that and what you thought you were doing, reading is in order.
482  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: BitBet Stole ~$7,000 from me (10 BTC) on: January 08, 2014, 10:00:41 AM
Is this still dragging on ? I cannot see how this benefits BitBet in anyway, even if for some reason Bitbet thinks the guy does not deserve to be refunded, surely you must have some business sense, reach a compromise with the guy and move on.

You obviously have no idea about business. Part one is in the published statement for November:

Quote
II. This month is interesting in a very general perspective because it offers a solid data point.

The substance of the matter is that one user sent a late bet, of the sort that ends up in the feared “generous donations” rubric. This is a recurring problem, albeit in general users are more inclined to take responsibility. This particular user had a lot of trouble coming to terms with reality however, and instead spent his time creating multiple bitcointalk threads, plus lots of reddit and twitter spam. To quote a relevant tidbit,

Quote
i’ve spent a lot of time spamming reddit and the forums telling people about bitbet scammers so i’ve already done damage to their brand, which they deserve for being theives

While the forum voting function collecting the anonymous opinions of uninvolved third parties came out 70 - 29 (out of 99 votes cast) in favour of his nonsensical demands, expectations and misrepresentations of fact and while the various other social media venues showed very similar consensus, BitBet nevertheless saw significant BTC inflows : more than triple the volume of last month, making November the best month in its history.

There are two possible constructions that may perhaps explain this seemingly anomalous result. One is that the aggitation exposed BitBet to people who having never afore heard of it, took the time to consider its workings, found them sensible and began using it. The other is that the aggitation proved to users already more or less familiar with BitBet that the management is firmly and unwaveringly decided to apply contracts exactly, which in turn encouraged them to take larger positions than they would have otherwise entered. It may be said this latter theory is weak, seeing how BitBet quite famously broke the Josh Zerlan betting con and so if anything would assure people that, rather than this, would have been it. Further it may be said that the two considerations are purely coincidental, and the evolution of BitBet incoming bets has exactly nothing to do with the aggitation of forums and other social media sites.

In either event, the moral I see in this adventure is that entrepreneurs are well advised to disregard the “wisdom” of crowds - they seem to go a lot on gut feeling and apparently guts are mostly full of shit. At the very most “public opinion” as represented on the Internet is completely unrelated to reality, and clearly there exists a distance - perhaps a quite large distance - between what a brand actually is and what Interneteers think, or claim to think on the topic. Perhaps all the money spent to “influence” social media users, and to “measure” web engagement and so on and so forth could be better applied elsewhere. Just a thought.

Part two is in this bet. Find any one Las Vegas bookie that took the equivalent of 460 BTC in a single bet this year and we may talk business. As things are so far however, BitBet is the king of the hill, in no small part because it did the right thing when confronted with you derps.

I'm fairly certain that is exactly what they are lacking, and thus why they must resort to scamming to make any profits.

Yes, but then again you're an idiot.

O, it's very important that under the guise of doing something you guise prop my shitty venue nobody cares about, please do so!11

Yeah yeah, glwt.

Reputation thread:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=391085.0;topicseen

Basically, either you'd like to jump on the weaseling noobs out of their coins wagon and figure this particular vehicle hasn't been as done to death as the other detritus out there, or else you're too noobish and idiotic yourself to understand how very much this doesn't work (yet also brazen enough to posture as though you're a trustworthy "expert" or the other).

In either case, the prescription is pretty much to see here and gtfo until such time as you've resolved 1 or 2 above. Completely.

As an aside for other new readers: the solution to not losing your stuff is to know what you're doing with it. Time, research, effort, intelligence, all of these are required in order to actually invest and to avoid getting fleeced. Read, hedge, think, understand. Delegating to some other dude in the unsubstantiated hope he'll make everything alright is in no way a solution.
490  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: PSA: coinbase.com defrauds with different schemes on: January 07, 2014, 03:48:01 PM
Your complaint can be simplified as this: you are new.

Having dealt with exchanges and clearing houses from the inside for a decade, I can assure you that you would have similar problems if you were trying to trade in major exchanges (CME,NYMEX,etc). Except it would take a lot longer to clear your documents and they would not let you trade until they knew you more than you would like to be known.

No. There's a difference between planning a course of action and following it to industry standard, and deciding it's alright to selectively scam under the guise of extenuating and unforeseen circumstances.

Coinbase's adherence to the latter has been thoroughly laid bare by now. No amount of vague allusion to how you personally might justify your own experience with them matters.
491  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Any exchanges for an US Resident That Actually Pay Out? on: January 07, 2014, 03:39:07 PM
we'll there's one I found which pays and I'm reluctant to mention it because it's not the best but I worry maybe they'll get inundated and begin having lesser service.

That sort of suspicion is grounds for vehemently not recommending a service.

That being said, OP, the landscape is fairly grim right now. For occasional selling, your best bet may well be getting in the WoT and trading OTC.
492  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Bter.com cannot withdraw currency/funds on: January 07, 2014, 03:24:50 PM
Nasty stuff. Still no statement/verifiable mail/notice from them? If the likelihood of losing your stuff wasn't enough, pull out for the sake of not supporting the notion that zero communication is fine and dandy.
493  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: USA still on the cutting edge, at least by world standards on: January 07, 2014, 03:06:36 PM
And more!

Billy Mays, is that you?

Really though, that you prefer one country's bs over another's doesn't put the former on the cutting edge. That title is reserved for those who do the right thing, all the way, first. Not for the lesser of two weevils.
494  Other / Off-topic / Re: Thinking about naming my baby girl Bitcoin.. (due in 3 weeks) on: January 07, 2014, 01:56:11 PM
Lol @ all the shaming in here. Name your kid what you're gonna name 'er, but you'd better be ready for the backlash if you pick something retarded. Like pretty much any other parenting choice, eh.
495  Other / Off-topic / Re: To the Moon on: January 07, 2014, 01:48:25 PM
Is anyone else sick of people saying "xxxcoin to the moon"?

Well I'm just back from vacation and can't really be assed to be sick of anything, but sure, it's tipped the repetition radar. Try assuming everyone using it is being sarcastic (especially if it contradicts what they've otherwise said). Either that, or start stocking up on duct tape....
496  Local / Anfänger und Hilfe / Re: Invest in the new TOR underground BTC & LTC market - beta testing now on: December 22, 2013, 04:42:24 PM
So I need about tree fiddy.

I lolled.

Seriously though OP, it's not just that you'd rather be anonymous. It's that you haven't established your competence, credibility, or any actual planning. People who announce themselves as Joe and post a picture of their kids have the same problem.

See here.
497  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: is anything bitcoin not a scam? on: December 22, 2013, 04:34:04 PM
Bitcoin is made to be used by people, so if it fails to account for basic human characteristics, it fails as a popular currency.
"It works for the knowledgeable and those willing to constantly be on guard" pretty much excludes the majority of people.  If I have to consult WOT before buying a stick of gum, I simply won't buy it.  Ease of use is pretty important for a currency.

Bitcoin isn't for the masses. Things that've been dumbed down to ensure nobody will have to adapt include child-proof pill caps and cleaning products plastered with warnings. Such things don't belong in the world of finance.

Inasmuch as "basic human characteristics" consist of blindly groping at everything without taking a moment to read or think, that which is good will fail to account for them, yes. Those who insist on keeping such characteristics intact so as to not have to change and grow will just add to bitcoin's fossil record.

If the "expert user" defense works, it works much too well.  It would show, for instance, that coding in assembler should obsolete every other language, since a knowledgeable coder, given sufficient time and motivation, would produce the tightest code.

Taking responsibility for yourself and understanding what bitcoin is before doing anything with it aren't exactly insurmountable tasks. Sure, there are brokers, data aggregators, and so forth out there to put some distance between people and the heart of the machine. That doesn't mean it's alright to stop paying attention and flagellate wildly, throwing coins wherever everyone else seems to be doing it. There's no getting around the fact that in order to act in finance, at some point people will have to learn shit. If they can't be bothered, they'll simply stay poor.
498  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Interest in "Free World Bitcoin Foundation"? on: December 21, 2013, 03:08:38 PM
So your idea is to take the already bad idea that is being applied to a country and replace it with the same idea only applied to the entire world?

no.

+1

You "don't want to write too much"? Why are you bothering to post, even? If you have something to say, say it so it can be evaluated. If you don't feel like writing, don't. And,

499  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Merchant Account on: December 21, 2013, 12:48:54 AM

Is there a place like coinbase but who does not require my share my personal info?

I just want to put some paymet processor for my website thats all. I don't want to share my bank info and so on just to accept bitcoin.

You might have a look at Mr. P's open source solution, no processor required.
500  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: An Open Letter to Bitfinex & Raphael... on: December 21, 2013, 12:44:58 AM
We appreciate the service you offer & you've always been upstanding, transparent, & fair in the past.  But there are some unanswered questions regarding this recent glitch.

Lol. Taking this "we" nonsense to even greater heights.

You're using a service that's been repeatedly criticized for its shady practices and the general incompetence of its operators. If you're too lazy to do your own due diligence before you use a service, that's your loss, but it's another thing entirely to represent yourself as "we" in doing so.
