4841  Other / Off-topic / Screenshots are worthless as proof on: August 25, 2012, 04:27:32 AM
I sometimes see screenshots used as proof of things, but it's trivial to create perfect doctored screenshots of sites. For example...

4842  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Do miners broadcast their transaction fees? on: August 25, 2012, 02:04:08 AM
No, and they probably never will. Miners would be greatly incentivized to tell people that they charge higher fees than they actually do.

4844  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 48 on: August 24, 2012, 09:40:59 PM
I might lower the minimum increment and minimum bid next time. I just realized that 0.5 BTC is fairly high-value now.
4845  Economy / Auctions / Re: Advertise on this forum - Round 48 on: August 24, 2012, 09:39:40 PM
CoinLab will bid :

2BTC for 3 slots (0.66 BTC per)

If outbid, we'll bid 1.5 BTC for 2 slots (0.75 BTC per)

If still outbid, we'll bid 1 BTC for 1 slot.

We'll be adverting the CoinLab Protected Pool for GPU miners.

I addition to the problem dree12 mentioned, you can't set up future bids like this.
4846  Economy / Auctions / Advertise on this forum - Round 48 on: August 24, 2012, 08:22:25 PM
In order to collect more money for the creation of good forum software, the forum is selling ad space in the area beneath the first post of every topic page.

Ads this week will be allowed to contain any non-annoying HTML/CSS style. No images, JavaScript, or animation (no marquee or blinking). Ads must appear 3 or fewer lines tall in my browser. Ads will be prefixed with "Advertisement:". Ad text may not contain lies, misrepresentation, or inappropriate language. Ads may not link directly to any NSFW page. Ads may be rejected for other reasons.

There are 10 total ad slots which are randomly rotated. So one ad slot has a one in ten chance of appearing. Eight of the slots are for sale here. Ads appear only on topic pages with more than one post, and only for people using the default theme.

The ad lasts 7 days starting from when I put it up.

Stats

Exact historical impression counts per slot:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adstats

Efficacy stats:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=54182.0

Info about the current ad slots:
https://bitcointalk.org/adrotate.php?adinfo

Auction rules

Post your bids in this thread. Prices must be stated in BTC per slot. You must state the max number of slots you want. When the auction ends, the highest bidders will have their slots filled until all eight slots are filled.

So if someone bids for 8 slots @ 5 BTC and this is the highest bid, then he'll get all 8 slots. If the two highest bids are 8 slots @ 4 BTC and 1 slot @ 5 BTC, then the first person will get 7 slots and the second person will get 1 slot.

- When you post a bid, the bids in your previous posts are considered to be automatically canceled. You can put multiple bids in one post, however.
- All bid prices must be evenly divisible by 0.5.
- The bidding starts at 0.5.
- The auction end time is 3:30:00 on August 27, UTC. Countdown. (The end time may be extended -- see below.)
- If two people bid at the same price, the person who bid first will have his slots filled first.
- Bids are considered invalid and will be ignored if they do not specify both a price and a max quantity, or if they could not possibly win any slots

If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the auction end time, then the auction will be extended by 30 minutes. If any valid bids occur less than 30 minutes before the new end time, then the auction will be extended again, etc. The time will not extend beyond 6 hours total.

You must pay for your slots within 24 hours of receiving the payment address. Otherwise your slots may be sold to someone else.

1 @ 2.5

These bids are too late.

Final results:
5 3 cablepair
2 2 TangibleCryptography
1 2 jga
4848  Other / Meta / Topic title style guide on: August 24, 2012, 07:31:55 AM
Moderators here typically don't require you to use good titles for topics, but I thought I'd post some guidelines for anyone wondering how best to write a title.

Include enough info in the title so that readers can mostly guess what your topic is about. Try to condense your topic's main idea into a few sentences. Ideally, people should be able to write useful, on-topic replies by just reading the title (though this sometimes isn't possible).

Terrible titles include:
- "A question"
- "I was wondering..."
- "Someone help me"
These titles are better, though still not great:
- "A question about Bitcoin-Qt"
- "Survey of the community"
- "I have a problem with the forum"
These titles are good:
- "Bitcoin-Qt takes too long to start. How can I speed it up?"
- "Poll: What is your gender?"
- "Whenever I try to send a PM, the forum gives me an error"

When asking a question, never use a title like "How to send BTC"; it makes the topic look like a guide on how to do something instead of a question about how to do it.

Some people like to put "tags" in the title within brackets. Like "[GLBSE] [ANNOUNCE] ASDF: Generic asset". I personally don't like this style. I prefer to include the tag info within the sentence, like "Announcing ASDF, a generic asset on GLBSE". When tags are really necessary, it may indicate that a new subforum should be created.

Use normal capitalization, not "newspaper capitalization". "Thread title style guide" instead of "Thread Title Style Guide". Capitalize the first letter of the title unless it a trademark like "eMachines".

Omit unimportant leading words. "Selling $100" instead of "I'm selling $100". Other than that, it's best to write a grammatically correct sentence if doing so does not make the title annoyingly long.

If the title is composed of only one sentence, don't include a period at the end. If it contains two or more sentences, put a period after each sentence, including the last. Questions must end with a question mark.

I'll proxy bets for 4% of your bet amount if you've already bet 250 BTC directly, or 6% otherwise. You'll need to send me the bet amount + fee in advance.

4855  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Obama or Romney ? on: August 21, 2012, 06:54:06 PM
There's no significant difference between them. I'm not going to vote.

I think Obama will win. Romney isn't very likeable, and a lot of people still like Obama.

Anyone considering not voting, should simply vote for someone other than establishment candidates.

This is a waste of time.
4856  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Hey Pirate, it's Monday....WHERE ARE MY BITCOINS ? on: August 21, 2012, 05:07:48 AM
Somehow people think that the quoted PM that I posted from Pirate to me is faked or bullshit.

Could a Forum Admin or MOD please go into my PM Inbox and retrieve the last 2 PMs from Pirate to myself and the last 2 replies that I made to those 2 PMs, back top Pirate, please ?

Here are the accurate PMs. I haven't checked whether they equal the ones you posted. Some formatting may be off.

What if, hypothetically, a BTC becomes worth 5000 US$?

I'll create new statuses. I might rename the current ones.

Also, I'll buy an island. Smiley

Luke Muehlhauser, CEO of the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence:

The Singularity Institute is meant to create AI that will work for humanity's benefit.

Also sounds much like a Zeitgeist/Venus Project planned and automated economy that I thought most of you guys are against.

If there is no scarcity, anarcho-communism and anarcho-capitalism end up being mostly the same thing.

Not self-consistent?

This forum is the bitcoin.org forum, just at a different name. The SourceForge forum was different.
