I cant help but know some Linode employee wont be at work tomorrow.
This all is way way way to convenient, seems like an inside job planned overtime with the knowledge of who runs worthwhile bitcoin services and on which VPS accounts.
This is alot of money, please for all of us make its your top priority to get compensation out of Linode otherwise any future losses less than this would be seen acceptable by these crappy hosting companies or other services.
Indeed. It seems rather odd that a random hacker would systematically probe linode for security flaws, and then magically find 8 customers related to bitcoin, and methodically empty their wallets. This is clearly somebody from the inside. I don't know, I hacked VizVideo's phone banks and the St. Joseph county library network both using the method you just described --stumbling upon it.

IMHO, it would be tough to get the losses directly from the courts. Settlement is much more likely. Linode had revenue of $10 million in 2010 and looked to be growing rapidly. Bad press (servers hacked, assets lost) can cost them dearly.
Finally, someone who understand US legal precedings.

The only individuals responsible for this are the criminals themselves, be they Linode employees or not. Linode has no moral responsibility to refund the victims. However, if they do not they risk gaining a seriously bad reputation forcing others to look for a VPS that assumes responsibility for loss or theft of a client's assets. Like all things, competition will allow for a diversity in quality of services. Some VPS's will be insured against theft, others will not. Some will refund victims, others will not. If Linode chooses not to refund the victims, so be it. If you don't like that about Linode, find a VPS provider that will.
I would be very surprised if any hosting company (VPS or otherwise) will assume responsibility in the form of economical compensation for incidents like this. Every Terms and Conditions I have read from virtually every hosting company I have worked with is very clear about no compensation for damages of any kind, for any reason. That has its limitations. You can't have employees working at your company willfully stealing things from customers and saying "woops! You agreed! haha". There needs to be an investigation and it's something Zhou, Slush, and the proposed attorney will be discussing over the next few days.

I don't get it, is it just a couple links or did you forget something?
I was more focused on the " All Linode hosted bitcoind wallets emptied" line that is an outright lie and something Bruce could not possibly know anyway unless he knew the hacker or was the hacker.

I'm sorry, are you a circuit court judge? Why don't you let people who understand the laws better make such statements? I'm not talking about a government law. I'm talking about principle. You're talking to an anarchist, somebody who has zero respect for the government and its definitions of right and wrong. Oh, okay. Please carry on then. ^_^

Uninteresting scammer douchebag lies more because his reputation hasn't been ruined enough yethttps://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=67044This fuckstart who already publicly stated that bitcoin is fake monopoly money, bought a bitcoin service just to make himself look better and sold it once he found out it wasn't working, used the account "Maria" to try to scam people out of money, and then started a chess game on his exchange (wtf?) is now telling everyone that his exchange (which has no customers) just got deposited 30,000BTC in the wake of the hack today from Linode for 50,000BTC. If he's not lying, it means the dumbass hacker didn't realize what a douche nozzle he is and he's facilitating the hacker. If he is lying, then he's typical CoinExchanger!

Police people, not the money they use.
+1 Money is money. The people who think money has an agenda or intention in itself are the ones against Bitcoin.

We just received another 12K BTC. It looks like the guy is dumping his collection on www.coinexchanger.comIf thats the case, you do know you are in clear violation of AML right? He claims that Bitcoins are valueless (he terms it "monopoly money") and says because it has no value, it isn't regulated. If I wasn't such an upstanding guy, I'd write a letter to FinCEN myself on this prick/coward.

So far there haven't been indications that negligence occurred.
From...? Did you expect Linode to announce it openly or for anyone in the community to know that without a formal investigation? That forces the majority of Linode customers, who don't host large-value websites, to subsidize those who do.
I was referring to the off-chance that Linode knew about their hacker and he works there at Linode, and they're just covering it up. They mentioned something about a policy change due to this incident. Covering their asses through insurance or profits doesn't change anything for existing customers. I guess you misunderstood. Anyway, it doesn't matter what I think, what matters is if a court of law sees Linode as being responsible. If you put leave your $50,000 Rolex watch in the pocket of a coat you put in the coat check of your local restaurant, you can't expect them to be responsible for it.
Really? And when it's the coat checker that steals the watch, you can't expect the police to come? When the coat checker isn't caught, you can't sue the restaurant? You must not live in the USA....

We just received another 12K BTC. It looks like the guy is dumping his collection on www.coinexchanger.comProof or GTFO. Advice for Zhoutong from bitcoinica.com
You are under age and the law does not apply to you the same way it applies to an adult.
Oh, so if he's 17 then the universal "takesies backsies" rule can be used? Declare bankrupt and the system will protect you.
You don't even know what country he is in apparently. Also, your insurance company should handle the loss, dont worry.
You're stupid to think that an insurance company would pay for bitcoin losses. There is no insurance company in the world that would ever insure bitcoins for spot value for any quantity or any amount. We're waiting on the proof scammer.
